The Berlyn character wasn't my thing and I can't hardly watch anything WCW at that point so, points docked there. (ok so, he reteamed with Disco during the Russo era as "The Boogie Knights" and I like that name but I admit - I never saw those matches/that era of the team). Otherwise - damn he was solid! |

Wright wasn't really much of a talker through due to the language barrier and his rather infamous gimmick didn't do him any favours. I think the main issue was that he was basically always showcased as a rookie and never got that big breakaway match that showed he could go with the heavyweights, always being shown as being incapable of doing so unless he was a heel who had outside interference. He'll always be a "What If? " because he seemingly had a ton of potential and the youth to keep improving but we'll never know where he could have went, especially considering he retired very young, arguably before his wrestling prime (usually mid 30's). He's done well for himself as a trainer and promoter through, so fair play to him. |

Hochgewachsen, gutaussehend, anständiger Techniker, nur ein wenig zu dürr. 10 Jahre blieb er in der WCW, und als er nach dem Ende Ted Turner's Wrestling Liga einfach verschwand, vermisste ihn niemand. Heute ist er ein "Running Gag". Der komische deutsche Techno-Typ. Was ist passiert? Erst einmal bleibt es für mich ein Rätsel, warum Wright nicht einfach Muskelmasse zu genommen hat. Mit über 1, 90m Körpergröße war er zu groß, um ein Cruiserweight zu sein. Mit seinen geschätzten 90 Kilo (wenn überhaupt) aber auch zu dünn, um als Schwergewicht zu gelten. Er war ein Wrestler, der eigentlich zu niemandem passte. Warum er nicht einfach zu einem Schwergewicht wurde - man weiß es nicht. Heute ist er komischerweise muskulöser, als zu seiner aktiven Wrestler-Karriere. Dann war und ist sein englisch - obwohl er Halb-Engländer ist und 10 Jahre in den USA lebte - wirklich schwach. Seine Matches waren nichts besonderes. Nein, er war kein sehr guter Worker. Seine besten Matches hatte er eigentlich in seinen ersten zwei Jahren, danach wirkte alles irgendwie austauschbar. Ja, und wieso hat Alex Wright weder an seinem Körper, noch an seinem Englisch, noch an seiner Workrate gearbeitet? Kein mir bekannter Interviewer hat ihn bisher gefragt. Am Ende war er mit dem unerträglichen Disco Inferno in einem Comedy-Tag Team. Einfach grauenhaft. Dann beendete er seine Karriere auch noch im Alter von 30 Jahren. Dieses Karriereende kommentierte er nicht einmal. Er tauchte einfach sang- und klanglos ab. Das ist möglicherweise ein Hinweis darauf, dass bei ihm die Luft schon lange raus war. Damit hat er selbst zu seine Karriere das beste Statement abgegeben: sie war einfach nicht der Rede wert. Schade. Alex Wright und Brakkus - zwei deutsche Wrestler in den USA, zwei Anekdoten. |

Gegen einige der besten Juniors ihres Fachs war Wright in den 90ern in zwei oder drei Handvoll ordentlichen Matches - die Qualität kam in dem Fall aber nie über ihn. Ansonsten bleibt vor allen Dingen das Berlyn-Gimmick in Erinnerung, das ihm zwar Profil verliehen hat, meiner Meinung nach aber - wie so viel WCW-Zeug aus der Zeit - klischeebehafteter Stuss war, zu dem die amerikanischen Fans keinen Zugang gefunden haben. Ich komme bei so einem Wrestler nicht über ein ausreichend, einfach weil es soviele deutlich Bessere in seiner Gewichtsklasse gab. |
