Hell, I would've bought a fucking Yujiro Takahashi shirt if I stumbled upon one at a Goodwill. Hopefully that's a good indicator of how much I despise Marty Scurll. Just another in a long list of celebrities and athletes who ruined their careers because they apparently can't just find a person to fuck that is both sober and of a similar (or at least LEGAL) age. Several years ago this dude wound up with the book for ROH (such as it was in early 2020) and also had essentially a free ticket onto the AEW main event scene whenever he pleased, but I guess a drunk 16-year-old girl was enough for Marty to throw it all away. What a waste of such a remarkably talented performer. Oh well. I'm still bummed about that fuckin' shirt though..."

But all of his "great" matches are him getting carried by significantly better wrestlers than him. Other than that? He sucked. Poor excuse for a technician with some of the most boring mat wrestling you'll see, and a moveset that can't even pop a kid's birthday party. Not a good wrestler by any means, definitely the worst in The Elite (which says a lot considering The Good Brothers & Nakazawa are in that stable), & just an absolutely horrible human being. Any person who likes Marty to this day is either a massive piece of shit or blinded by nostalgia of 2010s NJPW and watching him be the only alright wrestler on an otherwise shit late-2010's ROH roster."

An actual pedophile who never had a match better than about 3 stars and relied on better more talented wrestlers to get to where he was. No one should book this trash pedo. His matches with Ospreay are pure moves and sequence fests with zero actual psychology or selling and this is the theme with Marty's career regardless if it was his early work or his stuff in New Japan he was devoid of any positive qualities in a wrestler aside from athleticism"

For whatever reason, people were under the impression that he was something "special." I never saw it, you could look at the indie scene then when he was somewhat popular and now and you'd find every other male & female wrestler on the same level in-terms of in-ring ability. In my opinion, there was nothing extraordinary about him and I feel that he only gained notoriety because he was friends with some of the top indie guys around mid the 2010s. Giving him a zero because IRL he's a POS and I never saw anything in him when he had a very small following in the 2010s."

He's been blacklisted like he murdered his family while sexting children and using the n word on a hidden camera. The punishment for Marty has not fit the crime."

Emperor Caracalla would be proud of the "Damnatio Memoriae" that was so effectively applied to Marty Scurll. And I don't mean to ignore his crimes, in some way it is part of his legacy too... but, as a pro wrestling fan, I can't forget his time on the British independent scene either, how great his debut at Bullet Club was in 2017, his fight against Okada at the first "All In", the ladder match at MSG in 2019 and the excellent fight he gave us against Nick Aldis for the NWA title. To be fair, just because we are wrestling historians we can't pretend this great wrestler didn't exist. I don't rate him with a 10 because we never got to see if he could stand out on a big stage... but what I did get to see of him made it clear to me that he is an excellent worker."

You had everything, talent, a cool gimmick, mic skills, the position of booker in ROH, being part of the biggest and most popular faction in the world, probably future on AEW or WWE. He could have been the next big thing and he blew it. While I can never deny his talent, He will never be over like he once was even if he has spots where JBL attacks him or working for AAA Mexico."

Having watched some of his work back over the last few years, I've realized I'm just not that into his brand of technical wrestling as I used to be and find his constant comedic schtick to be obnoxious. It's clear looking back that he only really reached his mega stardom due to his friendship with the Elite. The only real positive thing I can say for the guy now is that he did a fine job as booker for Ring of Honor in a pretty dire time for the company. Oh yeah and he's a pedo. I hope to god his recent attempts to form a comeback fail as people like him should have no business still having a successful career."

Terrible person and there is no space in wrestling for him. I wish him nothing but the worst in life because he had the world at his fingertips, he was part of the elite (something which I don't think is mentioned nearly enough) and was one of the head bookers of Ring of Honor, making the best out of their worst roster since their inception. He really could have been so much more but he only has himself to blame. While yes, in ring he was great, his comedy making him a better version of Orange Cassady in my opinion that doesn't really matter does it? I hope his comeback falls flat on it's face."

[6.0] "Marty Scurll, known for his "Villain" persona, has long been hailed as one of the best in the business at working a character and playing a heel. His ability to connect with the audience, whether through his menacing demeanor or his signature umbrella, has set him apart in the world of professional wrestling. Scurlls in-ring psychology and storytelling are top-notch, making each of his matches a compelling narrative. His use of old-school heel tactics, combined with a modern flair, creates an engaging and believable villain that fans love to hate. Technically, Scurll is a very skilled wrestler. His repertoire of moves is diverse and he executes them with precision and flair. The Chickenwing submission, in particular, has become synonymous with his character, often teased and built up throughout his matches to great effect. His ability to adapt his style to fit various opponents, while still maintaining his character, showcases his versatility and understanding of the art of wrestling. Martys work in promotions like Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling has earned him respect and admiration from peers and fans alike. However, Scurll's career took a significant hit due to serious allegations and misconduct outside the ring. These issues have undeniably damaged his reputation and stalled his momentum in the wrestling world. Major promotions distanced themselves from him, and he found himself on the outside looking in. While these off-the-ring issues cannot be ignored, its also worth noting that they have overshadowed his in-ring talents and contributions to the sport. The Villains actions outside the squared circle have become a dark cloud over what was once a promising career. Despite these setbacks, there remains a possibility for redemption and a career resurgence for Scurll. Wrestling fans are known for their capacity to forgive if they believe someone has genuinely changed and taken responsibility for their actions. If Marty can address his past mistakes and show a commitment to personal growth, there's a chance he could reclaim some of his former glory. His talent and understanding of wrestling psychology are undeniable, and with the right opportunities and a reformed image, he could still make a significant impact in the wrestling world."

His in-ring work was average at best but nothing special, and his mic skills and character was kinda fun but nothing crazy special. However the main reason he got so popular was because of his friendship with The Elite, I am glad that he got cancelled for what he did before AEW started because there is a chance he would've stopped the awesome future AEW would have in store. He's now trying to make a comeback but it probably won't last to long because anybody who knows Marty knows that he has been accused of sexually assaulted a drunk/intoxicated 16 year old girl in 2015 and did not deny. I honestly don't understand how people try to save his image when he's done some terrible things but at least he's not welcome in any major companies now. So good riddance to that creep."

Then he got called out for some terrible stuff with an underage girl and rightfully never got a real chance again. Unfortunately some idiots like Santino Marella want to save his image, and now he seems to be wrestling in some terrible canadian indy promotions where nobody seems to care about him. Not the biggest fall from grace I've seen but it honestly sucks people still trying to use him to get themselves noticed. Even as an active wrestler he was okay, I think the only thing I really liked was the weird bird sounds. The UK indy boom helped him get noticed but he always seemed the week link in the bullet club or the elite so its not a suprise AEW didn't pick him up."

[4.0] "If you asked me in 2016, I'd say Marty Scurll was one of the best talents on the indie scene surpassed only by Chris Hero. His work during the heyday of PROGRESS and the rising years of RevPro alongside the obligatory PWG appearances and scattered Euro indie matches was just great stuff across the board. But then the moment ROH signed him he regressed heavily, relying much more on the Villain gimmick and/or being in Bullet Club than his actual in-ring ability; in PROGRESS playing it up big-time was a good call but in ROH & NJPW it felt wrong, almost a precursor to House of Torture. I truly hated seeing him work for a number of years. Then he got called out for some unsavory shit and it was all downhill from there; apparently he passed on being part of AEW and it seems like AEW dodged a bullet on that one. Ultimately he had more mediocre or bad years of his career than good and his personal life (and gall to keep trying to get bookings) sour me on even his best work. There was a stretch of maybe 2 years where he was one of the top prospects of the UK Indie Boom, but the fact that he didn't quite make it like Ospreay & ZSJ did both makes sense and is for the best."

His matches against Ospreay were great and are worth watching. Sadly, he made poor life and career choices and now he's wrestling for small shows. A really downgrade for a guy who wrestled Okada in one of the most important shows of all time."

Then, he made some poor career choices not to go to AEW, and then poor life choices which cost him any credibility he still had at that point. At this point, he's lucky he can wrestle anywhere. He was a true villain, at least that can be said."

Now to see this sack slowly easing his way back into the United States independent scene is just depressing really. He had his shot and blew it, stay out of the business and let others who deserve a spot on the cards he is on have a chance. No difference between this fool and Velveteen Dream only Dreams platform and audience was much larger so he will never come back. Same cannot be said for a true villian scumbag Scurll, any promotion and promoter that choses to book him should be ashamed."

Dude was a workrate monster and a damn good promo for years and then decided to coast hard off the BC fame before he was even out of his prime. Now the dude can't find work anywhere with actual eyes on it and honestly it's deserved. Going from one of the bright spots in britwres to coasting and being awful in BC to being outed as a fucking predator. Absolute waste of talent"

But even before they were made publicly available, I found him to be putrid in the ring, on the microphone and even aesthetically. Never liked a match he was in, never enjoyed an angle involved with him, he made wrestlers like Okada have bad matches when he got involved with them. Should be eradicated from the business entirely."

And then I saw his entrance in ICW where he had a new gimmick of basically being The Penguin from the Batman comics, so I was alot more into that persona. Unfortunately I just never liked Marty in-ring wise as I find him really boring and shtick heavy, once you've seen one Marty Scurll match you've seen them all. I also find his series with Ospreay highly overrated as once again they just repeat the same spots with the same beats, there's nothing different about any of those matches."

Work-rate was comparable to Ospreay, ZSJ etc and would probably be around an 8 rating. Since he started getting involved with the Elite his work-rate plummeted and started working half speed. His reputation (forged in the years prior) preceded him so I assume he thought he didn't need to work as hard."

The only major flaw in Scurll's in-ring game was his penchant for occasionally getting too swept up in his schtick and having it distract from the flow of the match or making the match become a bit self-indulgent in length. Scurll was at one time arguably Ring of Honor's most valuable player; arguably the rightful winner of their World Title at the ROH/NJPW show at MSG in April 2019, and the performer they threw virtually everything - including a Head Booker position - at to avoid losing him to the nascent AEW. Unfortunately, it was all for naught, as a sex scandal soon rendered Scurll persona non grata in the major promotions, and seems to have permanently stalled his career in at least the reputable wrestling scene at large."

That's just if you don't acknowledge the fact that he sexually assaulted a 16 year old girl. If you do you can see how he was a predator that abused his status in the cesspool that was the UK wrestling scene, and that pretty much wipes out anything to do with whether or not he was good in the ring."

[7.0] "Scurll is a strange case: usually most wrestlers will (most of the time) get better with age up until their mid to late 30's, while Scurll seems to get worse with time. His early career on the UK indies and such was amazing. Solid in the ring, a unique heel gimmick that got him noticed, and the pacing to make great matches, I'd definitely say he was one of the high prospects going into his eventual big shot in a major company. His NJPW stuff started well but went way down after a while, and it was clear he was phoning it in a lot of the time or doing stupid comedy crap with the Elite, which reduced his stock massively and kinda showed bad habits that consistently were being shown, namely not being very clean in the ring when it really matters and having a lot of padding and "signature" moves that he'd spam in every match regardless of context. If you can't even have a good match with Okada of all people, there's a big problem. Scurll post Elite is just sorta around, his ROH work is mostly tag matches, which he does fine in, but nothing outstanding. He CAN have really good matches once in a blue moon, but until his consistency gets better, I can't say he's anything better than decent, which is a problem considering he's capable of so much more."

He is an amazing wrestler, probably the best of the present crop of British wrestlers because he's just so well rounded, being great in the ring and outside of it. His Progress run was simply amazing, especially considering how young he was back then: most wrestlers don't become so good until well into their 30's. In a way he resembled Okada for being such a precocious talent. But over last two/three years he has really gone downhill and honestly I don't understand why. He still occasionally shows flashes of the amazing talent he once was but he most of the time he seems content with his cartoonish Villain act. If he's done this because his body just cannot take it anymore and he wants to lengthen his in-ring career, God bless him, but still it doesn't explain why his character work has suffered so much."

[8.0] "Back in January 2016, when Marty was really breaking out, I gave him a 10/10 and called him a blossoming talent, a total package, and the best in the UK. Here we are in May 2018, and I'm sad to say that none of those are true anymore. Now, by "anymore" I mean that I still think they were true at one point. Scurll's run at the top of PROGRESS coincided with that company's best run of shows, and I don't think that was a complete coincidence; his title reigns in PROGRESS, barring some booking foibles towards the end, were masterful heel reigns with some great-to-phenomenal matches. His matches back in January 2016 with Ospreay (fresh in my mind during my first comment) were exciting and showed a ton of chemistry (I still contend that the Chapter 25 main event is one of PROGRESS's best ever, overshadowed only just recently by WALTER vs Thatcher). However, I feel that as time went on, "The Villain" morphed from a gaudy prick persona that was caught up in his own misdeeds into a caricature and a semi-comedy act, compounded even more once he joined Bullet Club. NJPW has been a great step for his career in terms of success, but Ospreay and Sabre have both done bigger things there and honestly had better matches than he's had, and I say that as somebody that outright thought ZSJ sucked in 2016. It's like Marty's career kept rising at the pace it did in 2016, but his output plateaued and even faltered after he dropped the PROGRESS World Title to Haskins. He can still have a great match from time to time, but he's never reached the quality of that early breakout Villain run where his character work was a lot more consistent and he had modern indie classics against the likes of Ospreay, Hero, Haskins, and End. I think the talent's there, but the presentation isn't, so I'm dropping my rating to an 8, which I think is fair."

However, at times he focuses too much on playing character and crowd instead of the in ring performances. His matches are always quite good, but feel unspectacular. His selling can be meh. That's my problem with him, but when he is ON, serious, his matches can be very exciting to watch. Still a good wrestler to me."

" Might be a bit harsh, but in his outfit he comes across as a glorified cosplayer desperate to get pops as a "Cool heel", rather than get booed. Which is a shame because he's clearly a great technician who can put stuff together in the ring. His most recent display at the BOSJ 2017 left a lot to be desired, it'll be interesting to see wether he'll be booked again on NJPW shows down the line, or will he left high and dry."
