611.01.2026Mizzle Assault Ant7.0I generally like Cody. I really like Gunther/WALTER. Any match in this particular venue is gonna have lousy vibes unfortunately. The match is still good, these guys know their stuff, but feels like less than their full capability together.
708.01.2026Wrestlingfan08089.0One of my dream matches ever since the 2023 Royal rumble and boy did it blow away my expectations. Big fight feel. With both Cody and Gunther as champions of their respective brands at the time, the fact that triple nose found a way to make this match happen via the crown jewel title that was introduced is pretty beast. Definitely understand the negative feelings regarding the concept but Cody and Gunther did their thing making this feel like a big deal to determine the best of the best. The story heading into this match with Gunther calling Cody a secondary champion and putting it out there that he was gonna put him to sleep, his overconfidence and arrogance ended up being his undoing once again, just like what happened at wrestlemania 40 with Sami. Gunther usually has a variety of ways to put away his opponent but when it came to this match, he was dead set on wanting to win via the chokehold since he called his shot and it cost him. What makes the callback of the finish even better is that Gunther disrespected Bret Hart when he mockingly told him that Goldberg was his favourite wrestler when they were face to face in Calgary. Bret is also on record for not liking Gunther's style of wrestling. Look it up if you didn't know about that story already. So the fact that Gunther lost because of a Bret Hart callback makes the finish of the match even more satisfying that adds more fuel to the fire of when they eventually fued again in the future for something more meaningful. Let's go back to the beginning tho, the crowd was electric before Gunther and Cody even locked up with one another. Loved how this one started during the feeling out process, the matwork was sublime. Arm drags, headlock takedowns, classical main event wrestling elements sprinkled in the early going, with an early stalemate after a cross rhodes and sleeper hold attempt were reversed by each other. Then Cody looks to pick up the pace after blocking a chop attempt by going for his patented bionic elbow until Gunther responds with his patented chop. For a slight second it looked like Gunther was about to take control of the match, until Cody responds with a flurry of moves on the moves looking to bring the big man down. Forearm, closeline attempt, drop-down uppercut, then he finally brings the big man down to the outside, then proceeds to hit Gunther with his signature disaster kick on the apron. Looking to continue to pick up the pace, Cody then attempts to hit Gunther with a tope before Gunther gets back in the ring in time with another sleeper hold attempt but Cody manages to reverse it. He then attempts to go for the tope again, but Gunther cuts it off perfectly, catching him in mid air, slamming his back against the apron, and hitting Cody with a vicious chop, and a body slam onto to the floor. Just like that, Gunther takes control of the match for the first time. Gunthers control segment was very arrogant and deliberate, going after the back, taking his time punishing Cody. Cody then attempts several hope/comeback spots in the process but his back was in too much pain and Gunther was able to cut him off perfectly whenever he was attempting to get back in the match. But then was able to find some daylight like he always does when Gunther was attempting to continue to chop him down by countering into a body slam. The sense of urgency picks up even more after this. Just when Cody thought he created some separation, Gunther responded with another body slam before Cody's cut him off when he was attempting to go for the splash. Cody then hits Gunther with a super plex after both men were struggling jockeying for position in which Cody was able to win. Now Codys getting in his big comeback after both men take a second to sell the impact from the move and what both men have been through in the match thus far. Both men sprinkle in their signature offence along the way, with a beatiful example of what struggle in wrestle is supposed to look like. During the closing stretch after both men have seemingly emptied out their best offence in order to win the match, Gunther attempted to go for the sleeperhold again after reversing the super Cody cutter, but Cody was much more prepared for it this time around after the previous attempts from Gunther, and because of that, Cody was able to win the match the way he did. Gunther's reaction after the match said it all for me. Cody eliminated Gunther in b2b rumbles and beat him him for the Crown Jewel title. Just like what he mentioned during the lead up to the show, Gunther has the tendency of breaking the way he did. So when Gunther gets his win back in the future, it's gonna be bittersweet. The scary part is that they have a much better match in them. Match of the fuckin night and one of the best matches of the year. Two of the very best in the world. This wasn't your typical modern day epic with a bunch of near falls/false false finishes. They saved those the deeper the match went to make the moves that happened on those near falls more meaningful. This was a match where two guys where going at it until the other made a mistake where they were able to capitalize. This had such an old school feel, a throwback match if you will. Just another reason why I appreciate this match so much. It didn't drag. They could of kept wrestling for like another 15 minutes which was the best part about this match. Brilliant, just brilliant. This match won't get the love it deserves either because of where it took place and the circumstances involving this match, and some of the other reasons I mentioned regarding it not being being your typical modern day "epic". this was a masterclass in what simple wrestling looks like and how it can be done in high fashion. Cody winning here also established him as the top champion of the two, and considering the fact that he dethroned Roman's 1316 day title run, that had to be the case. With even more added context with who Cody lost the title to. ****1/2

1522.10.2025tsh208.0I couldn't care less about the Crown Jewel Championship, but these two did as much as they could to give this a big match feel. Gunther insisting on winning via submission and it costing him was very on brand. Never really felt bored, and the finish was done very well. (8.5/10)

3006.07.2025SlowUnsteady10.0This was a great idc. As someone who's been consuming a lot of old school wrestling recently, this shit satisfied me to the core. Slow and methodical. Didn't feel choreographed. Felt more close to a physical competition. Glad there's some wrestlers left who still atleast try. Others just don't care no more cuz they know that the audience is aware of it being scripted. So they don't even try. These two however, are levels above everyone else in terms of in-ring psychology. Edit: I originally gave it a 10. Then realized I might be overrating it so changed it to 8. But you know what? Fuck it. Imma give it 10 again idc.

6227.01.2025Gilensky6.0Why the hell this match is so much overrated? It was so fucking boring, without any story, without any pathos, without any useful meaning and also with a stupid ending. Why the fuck a match between Gunther and Cody Rhodes has to end with a roll-up? Porco de Dio, like we usually say in Italy? (6/10)

8714.12.2024Vinny Santos7.0That was a good match, probably the best in the PPV. I just wished that Gunther had won this one, he needed it more than Cody; his WWE World Heavyweight Championship really feels like a B Championship, and every chance WWE have to elevate the belt, they blow it. And it's a shame because, considering the whole 2024, Gunther is the best wrestler in WWE (way better than Cody, considering they in-ring work). (***3/4).
8811.12.2024celticinvader7.0I feel bad rating this match lower than the Reed/Rollins and triple threat matches on this card because, from a story/psychology perspective, it's much better worked than the entire card. Gunther changing his finisher completely to try to beat the champ and Cody only winning through a fluke roll up is clever and manages to make both people look strong. Unfortunately it's a stakeless exhibition match for a meaningless title.

9010.12.2024Screaming Enigma8.0Definitely the best match on the show, in my opinion. I was hoping for a little more here, considering how good they both are, the time they were given, and their previous encounters in the Royal Rumble, but this was still really good. I don't really know that I like Rhodes beating GUNTHER, though, even if it was a "lucky" finish. I feel like GUNTHER needed this win more, personally.

10001.12.2024Frank Shooter7.0I think this match suffers from its own nature, an unnecessary concept of having a Super Champion, sacrificing the credibility of the losing champion, thus making that championship feel like a secondary prize instead of a main one. Clearly WWE didn't care enough to make this match truly stand out and both wrestlers had to do whatever they could with what they had to make this as good as possible. I liked how Gunther and Cody built the feud in a very traditional and chivalrous way (despite the go-home SmackDown and the nonsensical Cody attack in their SmackDown face-off), and how they clearly differentiated their opposite roles as World Champions (Gunther only caring about money, being the best wrestler, fame and power, rejecting other responsabilities as the top guy of RAW and World Champion that Cody fully embraces, which makes him the Ace of the company). Trying to sell this as a "What-if" naming dream World Champion vs World Champion matches of the past between interpromotional wrestlers when this is just interbrand just looks more of a desperate way of selling this match as bigger than it really is. That kind of Champion vs Champion match today would've been WWE vs AEW or NJPW, Gunther vs Sabre, Cody vs Moxley. If you really want to make this match truly big you'll have to treat it like it was a boxing match, have some big press conferences, have the champions promote the match on prime-time / late-night shows, make it truly look like it's a one of a kind event. With what they barely did this is the best you were going to get, as there is no more deepness to make you feel invested in it. I think the crowd also kinda took the attention of the match away with their chants, having Gunther and Cody stop way too many times so the fans could have their moments, thus killing the pace of it. Cody focusing so hard on working on the arm of Gunther since the beginning was the best way he could start the match, trying to hurt the most used weapon of the World Champion so he struggles with the chops, lariats and submission attempts later on. On the other hand, Gunther began working on Cody's neck and head, so he gets tired faster to facilitate the submission victory he aimed for, then transitioning to a lower-back torture with (way too many) multiple body slams and a Boston Crab that, in a very Minoru Suzuki style that I never liked, quickly transitioned into another move, this being the Gojira Clutch, which obviously as the dynamic of the match suggested, Cody would fight against. At the end of the day, Gunther's defeat here wasn't just a loss where he clearly was the worst of the two champions, as he lost more because he made a little but fatal mistake than because Cody was truly better than him, but in a business and in a company where perception is one of the most important things, this doesn't make Gunther look really good as World Champion. I'll always love Gunther being a gentleman against those who prove to be worthy opponents, that's the character Gunther should really be, not the coward heel he is being portrayed on weekly shows. They did the best they could with what they had, but this Crown Jewel Titles idea is not it at all (*** 1/2)
