[5.0] "An extremely average Summerslam. Benoit and Orton have the match of the night by a mile, but even that isn't so good that it is worth going out of your way to see. On the other side of the coin nothing was so bad as to detract from the show either. I'd say this card probably underperformed by a little bit, but nothing bad. The real blow is the crowd. They only have two settings. The first is quiet. It takes a lot of effort for them to make some noise unless they are on setting number two. And setting number two is hijacking the matches. They seem to cheer for the heel just for the sake of it, honestly. I'm always happy to hear fans cheer for their favorites, but this show really feels like they are just trying to be contrarians. You even get the wave at one point to take attention off the match. Just a bad crowd on this night to cap off an alright Summerslam."

Everything else was very underwhelming and I really wasn't vibing with the crowd much. 2004 has been a horrendous year for WWE PPVs."

Chris Benoit Vs Randy Orton was also a good match and a historic moment for Randy Orton being the youngest world champion. The opening 6 man tag match was a good match and I always enjoy Billy Kidman matches. A pretty good PPV all around and very enjoyable."

[5.0] "It wasn't a bad SummerSlam, but I've seen better ones. The opener was alright, but mostly due to Mysterio's fun offense, Kane vs Hardy once again suffered from a horrible angle surrounding it and Cena vs Booker could have been longer. The IC Title Triple Threat wasn't anything special, but it was still a decent watch and Eddie vs Angle was another great match between them and it only made me wish that they got more time to deliver something even better. Then Triple H vs Eugene was an excellent match from a pure wrestling standpoint, but it completely ruined any suspension of disbelief with a disabled guy going toe to toe with a former world champion. After that the crowd seemed out of the show as they didn't care at all for JBL vs Undertaker, even though this match was also pretty good and the main event seemed like it was going in the same direction, but the fantastic work from both Benoit and Orton eventually got the fans invested. A very nice moment to end the show with Chris congratulating Randy and it was probably the best thing on this PPV."

[6.0] "This was a very weird Summerslam where the atmosphere sucked because of the bad crowd reactions. Benoit vs Orton was fantastic though and absolutely is worth checking out as it's an awesome intense and technical match and a fantastic landmark momemt for Orton's career. Also really good was the excellent Angle vs Eddie match, although it does suffer a little bit because of the terrible crowd. They deserved so much better. I had a lot of fun with the 6-man tag as well as the decent Intercontinental Title Triple threat although that match did feel cut short for me. While nothing on the card was flat out bad minus the Diva dodgeball, I just found a lot of it rushed personally. It's not a bad show by any means, but it's a bit disappointing overall."

[5.0] "The atmosphere for this SummerSlam was pretty weak and the crowd seemed more interested in pleasing themselves than actually enjoying any of the matches on the show. It was a decent show overall with the highlight of the night easily being Benoit vs Orton. JBL/Taker was a good match but the crowd didn't care about the match at all, and I also thought that Eddie/Angle was a good match. The 6-man was a solid opener, and everything else on the show is pretty forgettable, but there's nothing on this show I actually hated. The only real lame thing on the show was probably the Diva dodgeball stuff."

[7.0] "Overall I think it was a pretty good show, one of the better PPVs of 2004. Best matches for me were the opening 6-man tag team (***1/4), Eddie vs Kurt (***1/4), and especially the main event showdown between Benoit and Orton (****). Definitely some week spots like the god-forsaken Diva Dodgeball, but overall pretty good stuff."

[7.0] "It's funny, I do think there was an opportunity for this show to be better but it also ended up being more fun to rewatch than I expected. The big highlights for me were the opening six man and the two title matches, the first of which I think is especially underrated. Angle/Eddie was a bit of a letdown but I never thought they had chemistry like some people do, despite the talent involved. Weird crowd all night, that's for sure. Some lousy booking stuff going on, Diva Dodgeball, Lita pregnant, lame duck Edge champion, the whole Eugene thing (though at least that was somewhat over). More good than bad but I do think WWE struggled after Wrestlemania XX for a while."

[7.0] "I think it was a good show especially considering the standard of 2004 that in my opinion was a shitty year. The Main Event passed in History because Randy Orton won the title becoming the youngest World Heavyweight Champion ever in the tragic research of the new face of the company by WWE, in a period in which The Rock, Austin were gone, Brock and Goldberg quitted WWE leaving a big empty space and Taker HHH HBK were the standard but they could no longer be considered the basis for the future of the Business. WWE tried with Randy. Nowdays Orton is one of the greatest ever if not the greatest but at the time was not ready and his first title victory was a fail even if the match with Benoit is good. I loved the match beetween Undertaker and JBL with this new version of the Deadman that was searching for his new place in the new WWE of the new millenium with his old gimmick that made him a legend in the 90s. Good Angle and Eddie, I think they never respected the expectation that were given to them in their matches, neither WrestleMania XX or SummerSlam 2004 were matches that respected the expectations that fans had put in them to Steal the show. Good the match between Kane and Matt Hardy and the stipulation itself. Not bad the rest of the card: the triple threat match beetween edge, jericho and Batista, the match between Cena (that will become the true beacon for the company the next year) and Booker T for the US Championship etc. In My opinion the two bad things about this card were first the match between Eugene and Triple H, that was really bad, with a bad Gimmick (Eugene) and the chief cornerstone of raw at that time that almost got beaten by a comedy character and second the Toronto Crowd that was or absent for most of the show or disinterested in what was going on in the ring , ruining the matches and not creating the right atmosphere for a show of the caliber of Summerslam. The show could be an "8" but the enviroment, the fans etc made it a 7"

[6.0] "Located in the middle of a big difference in quality between Raw and Smackdown, in this event both roster had similar standards. The 3 vs 3 match is an okay opener, I was not too interested because they could have done a match for the tag team Championships. Kane vs Matt Hardy was uninspired. Booker T vs John Cena was the first of their series, so the US Championship was not on the line. Good but nothing more. Edge vs Jericho vs Batista was probably my favorite match in the event. Guerrero vs Angle could have been better. Eugene vs Triple H the worst match of the show. JBL vs Undertaker was a great round 1 for their feud. Benoit vs Orton iconic but not great as a Wrestling match. The ending of the event was strong but I expected more from Summerslam."

[7.0] "Really weird show. Not a bad card, a bit of a letdown considering what recent Summerslams had been like. The fact this was in Toronto ended up being influential on this event, with commentary often referring to the crowd as "bizarro world" because they refused to cheer babyface hometown Edge (Matt Hardy, say no more), booed Eugene against Triple H, mexican-waved through the WWE Title match. For me, it was kind of irritating as though some material wasn't the greatest and deserved criticism, in the Eddie v Kurt match, annoying contrarians are chanting "let's go Angle". I love Kurt and would support him as a heel if he was wrestling someone terrible, but no he's against Eddie, that definitely falls into "play the game or shut up" territory for the fans as it hindered what could've been an amazing rematch. As for the quality of the matches, nice opener featuring the much underused Paul London in a fun match, Kane v Matt Hardy was quite boring and had a cringeworthy stipulation, Booker T/Cena was low key and over fairly quick but fine, the IC title match was again fine but the result kind of killed the crowd, Eddie/Kurt was very good but not touching WM20 cos of the crowd, Eugene/Triple H really depends on what you think of Eugene, the crowd hated him mostly and I wasn't fond either, match was what it was and had a decent ending. The WWE title match was dull but the visual afterwards helped salvage it. The WHC match was great and I loved the handshake at the end and Orton's push."
