[5.0] "Royal Rumble 1998, the level of roster I see was adapting to this mew era, something I would say is that nowadays people and the veteran fans of WWF attitude era, say today they prioritize the Match Quality than the characters, but like here if you have pure character build and not prioritize Match quality where like in these events you have to wait for the Main Event to see something really good, that doesn't make your era the best ever, like here some matches were good, but the Rumble was okay, and the rest like the dwarfs match okay, but the worst was that match of the LOD, and the opener, in moments it saves it, like the 3 faces of Mick Foley in the rumble and the ending of Kane burning the casket. 5/10"

The undercard is completely unremarkable. If you watch this as a complete show, it is fine enough to keep you entertained until the heavy hitters, but none of these matches are worth watching on their own. The Rumble itself is better than it looks on paper, but not an all time classic. Shawn/Taker put on the match of the night, but even as good as the casket match is, you have better options between these two. This was a fine event, and a good way to keep off 1998. It is worth throwing on for the last two matches, but it isn't an overall amazing show."

The real bright spots are Rock against Shamrock and the wild intensity of Shawn against Undertaker. The Rumble itself is enjoyable but nowhere near an all time top ten for me. Still a solid watch that reminds me why this era clicked even when it stumbled. Also had one of the coolest PPV poster of all time."

And there's 4 matches before it, the IC title match is like alright. The tag title match is bad, the opener is bad, and the mini match.. man. But that main event, so good, heel Shawn will always stand the test of time for me."

Another good start to an year for undertaker, and the royal rumble telling the fans, the rock and stone cold are gonna become significant as ever."

After the hints last year, this would be the year where Austin became the guy so its a significant event"

[8.0] "Pretty good PPV overall for me. The Rumble Match itself was a decent one, with Austin winning back-to-back. It was a predictable match because all the focus on the build up was on him, but this was the start of the rise for Austin where this time he would be main eventing Wrestlemania. You can't really go wrong with a Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker main event, which was probably the best Casket Match ever done and had a legendary ending with Kane setting the Casket ablaze after betraying his brother in the match. Shawns performance was great considering his near career ending injury early in the match. I also enjoyed The Rock v Shamrock on the undercard which had a very creative dusty finish at the end. Some of the undercard matches wasn't great, but I didn't think any of the matches stood out as awful either."

[5.0] "A mid level PPV at best with a few solid moments. Vader/Goldust is nothing much as an opener the finish with Vader doing a splash with Luna on his back is pretty cool (5/10) The Minis match had some nice athletic moves but not much psychology and some poor comedy spots with Sunny. Skippable but not awful (5/10) Rock/shamrock was a solid fight boosted by the crowd being hot for the whole thing. The finish is well executed but slightly dissapointing (6/10) LOD and NAO have a nothing tag match that's pretty clunky and ends in DQ, but its not super long at least (4/10) The rumble has good moments with Foley and Funk trading chairshots, all three faces of Foley coming down to the ring and the final four leading to Austin/Rock. The rest of the match was very slow plodding and filled with a bunch of uninteresting jobbers staying way longer than they should. Not a fun rumble to watch (4/10) Shawn/Taker is the match of the night. Good back and fort in the begining, a lot of high risk spots involving the casket and an overbooked but entertaining finish involving Kane wrecking people. Its a shame HBK got injured in it but still a good match to close the show (7/10)"

The Rock vs Ken Shamrock was a good match i really enjoyed that. The tag team match wasnt really good and the ending was kinda lame. The Royal Rumble match was good but there werent many big names in it but it had a some nice moments. The main event is definitely the best match of the night, it wasnt as good as their previous one in Badd Blood but it was still good, those two can never have a bad match together the chemistry between them is just great. Id recommend only the last two matches and probably The Rock vs Ken the rest is skippable."

And with the first 4 matches being so short, we dont need to wait long for the Rumble Match which wasnt great but certainly enjoyable. Then to boot, we have a great main event to end the show along with the sweet visual of Kane kneeling in front of the burning casket, to set up the long anticipated match between him and Undertaker at WrestleMania"

I also thought Rock vs Shamrock was really fun too. The main even was decent enough too. But overall a fun show to kick off a legendary year for the fed."

[7.0] "Really nice start of the year for the WWF not only in terms of the pure wrestling, but the production quality as well - it really felt like a start of a new era. The opener was a pleasant little bout with Vader being over as hell and an impressive Vader Bomb at the end. The minis' 6-Man Tag wasn't bad and in terms of the moves execution it was phenomenal, but lacked a psychology that El Torito and Max Mini used to achieve in their Singles Match last year. Rock vs Shamrock was the first big highlight of the show with Rocky being phenomenal as a heel and Ken feeding of the crowd's energy, plus it had one of the more original screwy finishes. Then the Tag Team Match was the only miss on this show and even though I'm enjoying Dogg & Gunn as coward heels their match structures suck at times. Royal Rumble Match was all about Austin and him feuding with basically everybody and they knocked it out of the park. Great presentation of Stone Cold and impressive performances from the whole Nation of Domination with The Rock specifically. And then the main event was the best Casket Match up to date, as it didn't consist of two huge guys slowly moving around the ring, but Taker was able to throw smaller Michaels around making the whole thing much more enjoyable. Nice finish to the whole thing with a great visual of Kane setting The Undertaker on fire. Once again - great production quality and good wrestling, a really easy watch."

[6.0] "Best WWF PPV since one night only, although that isn't really saying much here tho. Undercard matches are fine although I like the Rock vs Shamrock matches the most out of all of them. Rumble shows how shallow the roster was, thankfully they incorporate enough entertaining stories into it and Stone Cold looks like the biggest star on the roster in the match. Main event was a good match with a really strong.close ending of Kane setting the casket that Taker was in on fire. Matches best to worst: Taker/Miichaels ****, Rock/Shamrock ***1/4, Rumble Match ***1/4, Vader/Goldust **1/2, six man tag **1/4 LOD/Outlaws **"

[5.0] "OMG! Austin is arriving! OMG! It's Mike Tyson! Austin/Tyson/Austin/Tyson all the way through the show. Obviously I know this is building to the huge payoff at WM but it's just relentless, you even forget about the rest of the action as even the commentators can't stop talking about Austin (and the Cameras cut to Mike's personal box numerous times). [1st match] Despite being in a bad place at the time (and looking in bad shape also) TAFKA Goldust had quite a good match with Vader and sold well for him, crowd didn't seem into this match however. **1/4 [2nd match] This was just a show - botches and miscommunications littered it and the short jokes were non-stop and childish. Bad *1/2 [3rd match] So weird seeing Rock actually wear a championship around his waist. And... I'm struggling to say much more about this match? not bad but not especially good either, liked the finish though. *** [4th match] Dull; at least Hawk sold those handcuffs, which is more than he usually does. ** [Rumble] Well I guess this had a lot of things happening in it? - Hardcore opening with some scary chair spots, continuing feuds of Rock/Shamrock, Hart/Jarrett/Hart/HHH, 3 faces of Foley & everyone tagging Stone Cold. But the star power was really weak and all the focus was on Austin and the rest were simply in the way. At least the final 4 weren't drawn out needlessly. **3/4 [Main] Credit to HBK to continue to perform and put on an awesome display with UT despite fucking up his back early on from the Casket (and continuing to take punishment on it throughout). The spots inside the Casket were a little too comedic and the finish was awkward as per usual for Casket matches, aftermath was stupid but otherwise a fine match. ***3/4 Definitely a one match show; the Rumble itself was one of the worst for me, despite this time being on the up for the WWF."

[6.0] "Feels like the main thing that the Royal Rumble in 1998 revealed was how shallow the talent pool at WWF was at the time. The Intercontinental Title and the World Heavyweight Title matches were worth a watch, in particular the latter which had a pretty damn intense ending and progressed a really good storyline with Kane and Undertaker, while building HBK up even more. The Rumble itself wasn't all that interesting, and was a clear indicator of the lack of talent in the middle and lower cards. Foley had three entries, all of which were great, and Terry Funk (aka Chainsaw Charlie) was fun to watch with how he constantly managed to avoid elimination."

[7.0] "I watched it right now on WWE Network. What can we say about that historic PPV? well, my vote is about the importance in Wrestling History more than the show quality itself. I personally don't like the Attitude Era as a period in time, and we have to say that it aged really badly because with the passage of time though his storyline quality its still great and its incredible how everything squared off perfectly over the months, but the "workrate" of its own PPVS result as really really bad. The Undercard is not good at all, we have a bad opener between Vader and Goldust, we have a non sense match between the New Age Outlaws and the LOD ending in a disqualification and we have a decent match between The Rock and Shamrock for the IC title that ends up with a good booking decision in my opinion, with The Rock retaining the title after a reverse decision by the referee over Shamrock, a fact that will led to their WrestleMania encounter and another similar ending exalting the raw brutality showed by Shamrock. I give a more than satisfactory rating for the Rumble and for the Main Event. Even if it was not one of the best Royal Rumble ever, that year rumble had great build up and it was well booked in its entirety with all the feuds and all the storyline being well narrated and inserted into the Thirty men Rumble match itself. I really loved the fact that Mick Foley entered with all three of his characters and I think Dude love being the last of the three to remain in the match was perfect for make him meet with Austin in the end (I was wondering myself why just Dude Love and not for example Mankind that its the most famous and succesful of the Three faces of Foley and then watching the end I understood why), also The Rock and Shamrock storyline, Owen vs Jarrett and Triple H or the Cactus Jack vs Chainsaw Charlie were really fun and well done during the match, compared to many others Rumble where there is only brawling and no storytelling. I loved the fact that Rock and Austin were the final 2 of the match, even if the ending was really fast and not so epic as many others Royal Rumble ending in history. It is one of the best Royal Rumble of all times? off course not, its not one of my favorite but Austin winning and the whole script was good. The Main Event was great, not of course the best match ever between Michaels and Undertaker and not one of their most memorable, but as usual when we are talking about Michaels and Taker, we have a great match, quite possibly the best Casket Match I have ever seen a match not easy to manage and in which they have done their best to tell a good story and put on a good show. I loved the Crossbody by HBK in the casket and I really went nuts watching Taker doing a fantastic Tombstone in the Casket itself. About Kane run in, for the second time he cost Taker the match after the epic HIAC, making it the best storyline of the period, a real shame that Kane's in ring fires failed before attacking The Phenom"

Six man tag is for me the best light division match. Other undercard is meh. As for the Royal Rumble. It is still good because of great moments like the start, three faces of Foley and The Rocks performance. Howewer I didn't like that until the end there are almost no eliminations so the match was boring in some moments. It also has very predictable ending. Main event is great. Another awesome chapter in Shawn and Takers rivalry. But even more than I liked match itself I liked the ending and postmatch segment."

Only good thing was Shamrock's comeback but other things like Rock's overselling or bullshit ending were tragicomedical, *1/2. Legion of Doom vs New Age Outlaws had feeling of a good match but it was ruined by the horrible finish, *. Rumble had some good moments like Three faces of Foley, Owen Hart/Jarrett rivalry or the fantastic ending however better part of the match was dull. Predictable winner didn't helped at all, **. Michaels/Undertaker casket match - Nearly everything about this match was very good. Undertaker dominated at beginning then Michaels started his offensive part of the match by heelish practices, which led to the sick Piledriver on the stairs. Selling in this match was pretty impressive. Michaels almost won but he didn't because of his arrogance. That Tombstone Piledriver to the casket from Undertaker looked awesome but it took three years of Shawn Michaels in-ring career which sucks. The finish was what it was, ***3/4. +1 for the end of the show."

The HBK vs. Taker main event was fun, albeit not the best match they would have against each other, and the undercard was decent if not spectacular (Rock vs. Shamrock being the best of it)."

Also, The Rock vs Ken Shamrock is another good match, with a cheap ending that I appreciated. The rest wasn't interesting."
