Team Canada vs Team America is a fun for what it is. I thought Kane vs Mankind was great aside from the lighting. Foley steals the show a lot of the time on shows from this era. The last survivor series match is still good enough despite LoD and Ahmed not being the best (Ahmed no selling D-lo bugged me a lot.) I really enjoyed Stone Cold vs Owen despite the four minute runtime. The infamous screwjob is an insane stain on the main event but I think the match Bret and Shawn put on before it was pretty solid even if it doesn't get the proper ending. Overall not an amazing show by any means but I still enjoyed it. |

All the survivor series tags felt way too long and no one won me over with their work in the ring nor whatever video packages and promos that were had beforehand. While this card holds some historical significance it certainly has not convinced me to watch more of this era of WWF. Austin vs. Owen ending up as a DQ really hampers things as the three singles matches are really the only draw and none of them are must see matches by any stretch. Mankind vs. Kane was fine, It was mostly just Kane tossing around Mankind until the finish as you are meant to root for Mankind to see if he can beat this seemingly unconquerable foe 4/10. Michaels vs. Hart starts with a brawl helping to sell it as a blood feud. Eventually we get back to the ring and have some actual wrestling before it ending in the screwjob. In general I'm not a huge fan of Michael's over selling everything and felt that the fatigue from the rest of the show really weighed it down 5/10. The rest of the matches aren't worth mentioning and are all some combination of bad, boring, or awful. |

Survivor Series 1997 is infamous for the "Montreal Screwjob" and even though the Bret vs HBK match was really good, the finish far overshadows everything that happened in that match. For better or worse this was a historically important moment that changed wrestling as we know it forever. Elsewhere I thought Kane's in ring debut was really strong in the match against Mankind. Austin vs Owen was exactly what it needed to be under the circumstances. The third and fourth Survivor Series matches was decent because of the strong storytelling in my opinion where in the US vs Canada match, the disjointed US team left Vader carrying the load for his team, which lead to a really strong performance. The Shamrock vs Nation match ended with a fun Shamrock vs Rock singles match and even more importantly Faarooq's early elimination left The Rock leading the Nation for most of the match. Unfortunately things got off to a really bad start with the first two Survivor Series matches being rubbish! This was far from a perfect show, but it's a memorable one to say the least! |

The opener wasn't bad with The Outlaws getting huge heat from the fans. Then DoA made sure that once I again I couldn't enjoy every match on the card, but fortunately the next bout got the things back on track with Team Canada and Bulldog finally waking up the crowd. Kane and Mankind had a nice little match that achieved what it wanted, which is presenting Jacobs as an absolute monster. Then Nation of Domination carried the Elimination Match with their incredible charisma and chemistry between each other with Rocky and D-Lo impressing me the most. Austin vs Owen was alright for what it was, but obviously I would have preferred an actual rematch here instead of a squash. And then the main event was an infamous Montreal Screwjob, but it should also be remembered for a fantastic brawl beforehand. In terms of the in ring work it was also great and Shawn working the crowd was just a thing of beauty. Another decent canadian show. |

Aus heutiger Sicht schwebt über dem gesamten PPV eine dunkle Wolke, da man weiß was passiert ist. Ich kann mir nicht ausmalen, wie das alles damals gewirkt haben muss. Die aufgeheizte Stimmung mit verkehrten Vorzeichen in Kanada, ein lustlos aussehender Davey Boy Smith, ein gesquashter Own Hart und ein betrogener Bret Hart - das alles hat man vor der Kamera gesehen ohne all das, was Backstage abgegangen sein muss. Ich weiß gar nicht, ob es heutzutage leichter oder schwieriger ist, diese Show zu bewerten mit all den Hintergründen. Menschlich und geschäftlich gesehen ist der Screwjob auch heute definitiv noch eine der dunkelsten Stunden des Wrestlings. Dass sich Bret geweigert hat gegen Michaels zu verlieren ist auf den ersten Blick auch schwach. Wenn man jedoch bedenkt, dass auch Michaels sich früher im Jahr anscheinend nicht für Bret hinlegen wollte, sieht das schon wieder anders aus. Nichtsdestotrotz fand ich den Main Event als Match erstmal ganz gut. Der Brawl war sehr intensiv, man könnte sagen glaubhaft, was sicherlich auch daran liegt, dass beide sich wirklich nicht ausstehen konnten. Die Stimmung war auch super mit dem klaren Face Bret Hart. Wilde Szenen nach dem Match als die Kamera sogar einfängt, wie Hart Vince ins Gesicht spuckt und Earl Hebner sofort den Ring verlässt, gefolgt von HBK, der sich ebenfalls schnell aus dem Staub macht. Abgesehen davon war der PPV durchschnittlich. Kane vs. Mankind war noch ein sehr ordentlicher Brawl aber auch im Jahr 97 nervte das rote Licht schon, was man ja viele Jahre später beim Fiend wieder auspackte. Ich würde zwar sagen, dass ich das hier nicht so schlimm fand, wie beim Fiend, jedoch könnte das auch an der Nostalgie liegen und daran, dass Kane generell gut aufgebaut wurde. Stone Cold vs. Own Hart war leider sehr kurz und daher irgendwie enttäuschend, weil beide einfach zu wenig Zeit bekommen haben. Von den Elimination Matches fand ich NOD vs. Ahmed, Shamrock & LOD noch am besten, da man The Rock und Ken Shamrock etwas aufgebaut hat. Generell muss man aber sagen, dass die Matches unkoordiniert wirkten und es mehrere billige Eliminierungen gab. Team Canada vs. Team USA war okay, der Opener in erster Linie langweilig und Truth Commision vs. DOA einfach schlecht. Was soll man aber auch bei diesen 8 Wrestlern erwarten. Immerhin hätte ich damit auch Don Callis einziges WWF PPV Match gesehen. Insgesamt eine doch sehr durchwachsene Show, wenn man den Screwjob ausklammert mit 2 netten Matches und vielem, was halt da war. |

Owen/Austin war wirklich kurz, aber trotzdem lustig für die kurze Zeit und sehr erfrischend(**1/4). Michaels/Hart war das MotN und das Finish ist wohl jedem Wrestlingfan bekannt(***3/4). |

Das zweite Match ist zumindest einen Ticken kurzweiliger und der Entrance der Truth Comission macht was her. Team Canada besteht aus einem Kanadier? Ok. Das Match war ein wenig overbooked, aber zumindest besser als die beiden vorangegangenen, was aber auch nicht schwer war. Mankind bumpt ordentlich für den noch grünen Kane, sodass ein ordentliches Match dabei herauskommt. Darauf folgt ein lange durchschnittliches Match mit einer ansehnlichen Schlussphase zwischen Rocky und Shamrock. Austin kann zu dieser Zeit quasi keinen Bump nehmen, wird trotzdem in ein High-Profile Match gebooked und so kann nur eine Enttäuschung das Resultat sein. Der Main Event ist natürlich schwierig zu bewerten, ist vom Brawling geprägt und ich kenne kein weiteres Match der beiden, dass vergelichba abläuft. Das Screwjob-Finish sorgt für ein abruptes Ende des Matches und der ganzen Show. Insgesamt ist das nicht ausreichend in meinen Augen, man hat den Main Event, den jeder aus nicht qualitativen Gründen mal gesehen haben sollte und das erste Match des Kane Charakters. Der Rest ist überwiegend schlecht. |

Den vielen Elimination-Matches fehlt es an Starpower, die Einzelbegegnungen sind oft redundant und erstaunlich verbotcht. Die vielversprechende Begegnung Owen Hart vs. Steve Austin ist viel zu kurz und deshalb eine einzige Enttäuschung. Die Rezeptionsgeschichte dieses PPVs wird natürlich einzig vom legendären Mainevent bestimmt. Der Montreal Screwjob ist der Grund, warum dieser maue PPV im ewigen Wrestling-Gedächtnis eingebrannt ist. Die in diesem Fall wahre Story dominiert die Auseinandersetzung und die Stimmung um das Match herum. Das Match selbst ist bis zum unrühmlichen Ende allerdings eher enttäuschend, denn HBK und Hart können gegeneinander im Ring viel mehr. Einzig das Storytelling bzgl. des Beins funktioniert. Der Screwjob an sich ist Wrestlinggeschichte. Er zerstört das Ansehen McMahons (und vorübergehend HBKs). Und er vergeht sich an einem der größten Stars und großartigsten Wrestler der Geschichte. |

Team Canada gegen Team USA ist da schon besser vor Allen Dingen dank Vader und der Story rund um Goldust. Kane gegen Mankind ist halt ein intensiver Brawl, ohne jedoch hochklassig zu sein. Letzteres Attribut gilt zwar auch für das folgende Match, es ist aber von den Elimination Matches noch eines der beiden besseren. hier passiert auf jeden Fall was mit der schnellen Eliminierung von Hawk durch The Rock und ein paar Leute (D-lo Brown, The Rock, Farooq) können sich schon in den Mittelpunkt stellen. Danach kommt dann aber leider wieder eine Enttäuschung, da Austin gegen Hart zwar nicht schlecht beginnt aber dann auch schnell zu Ende ist. Das hätte so viel mehr sein können. Dann kommen wir zum berühmten ME, das eine bis dahin wirklich durchhängende Veranstaltung für mich noch auf die 4 und somit in den ausreichenden Bereich hieft. Es war sicherlich kein technisches Meisterwerk, aber ganz klar MOTN. Man merkt beim Brawl vor der Ringglocke schon den Hass der beiden und im Match setzt sich das fort und es kommt vor Allem zu Submissionseqenzen, wovon eine im legendären Screwjob endet. Alles in Allem ist diese Veranstaltung aber alles andere als legendär in Sachen Qualität sondern gerade eben so noch okay. |

On the other hand, Team Canada vs USA is a very good mix of in ring styles and entertainment with some clunky wrestling here and there (***), NOD vs LOD and others was entertaining too and helped to further get Shamrock over as a legit badass (***), Austin vs Owen is overall just a little mini brawl with some good spots and a great story in Austin coming back and winning the title he never lost (*1/2), and my personal MOTN in Kane vs Mankind, Kane looked like a monster, Mankind makes a great sympathetic babyface which is a perfect opponent for Kane, and there are awesome spots like the chokeslam from the ring to the announce table, the steel steps onto Mankind and the Cactus elbow on the outside. Very good fast paced match and a brilliant debut for Kane (***1/2). Overall, a mixed bag but what I think is more hit than miss. |

It was first Austin's match after return from an injury but it is still very disappointing. Main event for me is a great match. It is not as good as Michaels vs Hart at Mania XII but it was very different match. You can really feel the hate and aggression fro those two. It is awesome for last Shawn vs Bret match. Overall a mediocre show that is well known only because of Montreal Screwjob. |

Aber auch wenn man diesen ausklammert, ist das eine ziemlich launige Show. Die Crowd schwankt von himmelhoch jauchzend bis zu Tode betrübt. Die Leistungen im Ringen machen es dem Publikum aber auch nicht einfach, besonders die ersten beiden Elimination-Tags sind stellenweise stinklangweilig. Beim Match 'USA vs. Canada' wird Blackman kaum erklärt, während gerade in seinem Team die Leute offensichtlich sehr viel mit sich selbst zu tun haben. Auch das letzte klassische Survivor Series Match ist kein Kracher per se - immerhin spürt man, dass man mit Shamrock und Rocky zwei Talente auch für offensichtlich höhere Cardregionen formen kann. Dann ist da noch das viel zu kurze weil vorsichtig durchgeführte Match um Owen Harts IC-Gold - das spuckt den Geschehnissen seit dem Summerslam rund um diesen Gürtel ja fast ins Gesicht. Bleibt noch der heimliche Showstealer im Rotlicht - Foley macht es dem Roten Monster alles andere als einfach, kommt aber natürlich auch nicht zum Erfolg. In Summe sind das dann für mich maximal vier Zähler, da die Orientierungslosigkeit aller Beteiligten quasi über die komplette Länge der Veranstaltung greifbar erscheint. |
| 79 | 25.07.2017 | HudE | 3.0 | Rückblickend wird immer an den Screwjob gedacht, wenn man an die Survivor Series 1997 denkt, was zum einen natürlich an der rießigen Kontroverse liegt, zum anderen aber auch daran, dass bei dieser Veranstaltung auch nichts geboten wurde, was auch nur annähernd in Erinnerung bleiben konnte abgesehen davon. Alle Survivor Series Matches waren ausnahmslos langweilig und komplett uninspiriert geworkt, weswegen die Zuschauer auch zu keinem Zeitpunkt in diese Veranstaltung hereinfanden. Austin vs. Owen war ebenfalls eine große Enttäuschung, weil man Austin noch extrem schonen musste, aber aufgrund der momentanen Situation nicht auf ihn verzichten konnte. Mankind vs. Kane war abgesehen von Main Event noch das beste Match und ein netter Brawl, aber auch das war am Ende nicht genug, um die Veranstaltung in ein besseres Licht zu rücken. Der Main Event war dann an sich ein gutes Match und die 2 erzählten eine tolle Geschichte im Ring, aber das abrupte Finish sorgt dann für einen bitteren Nachgeschmack und man war sichtlich bemüht diesen PPV so schnell es ging zu beenden. Definitiv weder von der Qualität noch aus historischen Gründen zu empfehlen, da würde ich am ehesten Wrestling with Shadows empfehlen, falls man mehr über den Screwjob erfahren will. |

Die traditionellen Elimination Matches sind alle bis auf das Match der Nation komplett belanglos und größtenteils auch langweilig. Nur bei dem Nation-Match kommt so etwas wie Spannung auf, da nicht klar war ob Rocky oder Shamrock gepusht werden sollte. Kane vs Mankind war ein langgezogener Squash. Das Match war noch erträglich, aber nichts was ich mir ein zweites Mal anschauen würde. Bei Owen Hart vs Stone Cold hat man ein potenziell gutes Match einfach so weggeschmissen. Allein das Einführungsvideo war fast länger als das Match. Eine echte Schande. Auch der Main Event ist lediglich unter historischen Gesichtspunkten sehenswert. Im Match selber passiert nichts aussergewöhnliches wenn man einmal vom Finish absieht. Das Brawling ist halt da, aber das können andere besser. Auch hier war deutlich mehr drin. Insgesamt eine extrem enttäuschende Show. |

Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart was a mess from the beginning, if it wasn't for the screwjob it wouldn't be remembered, just a brawl between wrestlers who don't like each others. The Survivor Series matches weren't good. Not really an event to remember except for the ending. |

Crush hatte schon wesentlich bessere Zeiten. Team Canada vs Team USA ist interessant(doch warum lässt Goldust, Vader im Stich? )Schnelles unsauberes Finish. Dann kommt Kane vs Mankind(der Ringannouncer nervt! ). Aber neben der tatsache das der genervt hat, hat mich auch das Licht abgenervt. Warum Kane seine Interviews in Rotem Licht gibt, ohne Frage verständlich, das er eingriff bei Bad Blood auch in diesem Roten Licht auch noch okay. Aber Matches in Rot *würg*. Ken Shamrock wird genau wie The Rock gut gepusht. Was mir nur leider gar nicht gefiel im Jahr 1997 war Ahmed Johnon und die NOA. Erst gegeneinander dann miteinander dann wieder dagegen. Austin vs Owen Hart hat bei mir in keinem Match der Fehde ein Feel Good Feeling gebracht. Es war also da mehr auch nicht und zu schnell vorbei. Im Main Event erkennt man den Arroganten HBK bereits vom Einzug weg. Bret Hart erlebt dagegen ein Herzlichen Einmarsch. Im Blick von Bret Hart erkennt man die Unsicherheit des Abends. Brawl, Hass, Rivalität alles prägt dieses Match(für mich war es keins). Man erlebt zwar Wrestling aber es hätte locker ein No Holds Barred sein können. Das Ende vom Match ist Geschichte. Fazit:Viel störendes bis zum Mainer wäre ich geneigt 2Punkte zu vergeben, da der Mainer aber mehr als nur das Finish zu bieten hat vergebe ich 4Punkte. |

The rest of the card was very hit-and-miss: Kane and Mankind had a good match that helped establish Kane's character in its early going, and the "Team Canada vs. Team USA" and NOD vs. Shamrock, Ahmed & LOD elimination matches were rather entertaining. Austin-Owen was kept very short as Austin was still coming off his major injury, and the rest was simply filler. A very significant and controversial show, but when it comes down to it not necessarily a very good one. |

Team Canada gegen Team USA ging so. Interessant fand ich die Schlussphase zw. dem Bulldog und Vader. Auch Furnas & LaFon durften ein wenig von ihrem Können zeigen. (2 3/4*) 4. Kane gegen Mankind war ein Squash. Spektakulär für die damaligen WWE Verhältnisse, war Mankinds Sturz durch den Tisch. (1 1/2*) 5. NoD gegen Team Johnson war okay. Vor allem Rock & Shamrock durften in dem Match glänzen. (2 3/4*) 6. Stone Cold gegen Hart war einfach zu kurz. Hier hätte ich mir ein längeres Match erhofft. (2 1/4*) 7. Der ME ist legendär, aber in negativer Sicht. Dieses Match hätte das Potential für einen Klassiker gehabt. Doch leider kam alles anders. (o. W. ) Ein PPV den man eigentlich vergessen kann, wäre da nicht der Screwjob. Hier wurde Legende des HitMans komplett begraben. Auch der Rest war eigentlich zum Vergessen. |

Ging schon okay, die Show, finde ich, auch wenn der Main Event quasi mittendrin endet. Die klassischen Survivor Series-Matches waren alle in Ordnung, auch wenn nichts dabei war was wirklich herausstach. Kane vs. Mankind konnte man angucken, Owen Hart gegen Austin wurde leider sehr knapp gehalten. Der Main Event wäre sicherlich ein Top-Match geworden, aber hier kam es eben ganz anders und es lässt sich nicht ändern. Zwei Schilder von Fans bringen es ganz gut auf den Punkt: "Good Luck in WCW Bret" und "Thanks for the Memories Bret". Ein trauriger Abgang für den Hitman, aber Teufel, Verdammter das waren 13 Jahre verdammt starke Jahre und hier war dann halt Schluss. |

Conspiracy theories aside, the ACTUAL wrestling portion of the show is quite good with a lot of characters allowed to morph themselves into whatever character they are most comfortable with as the characters and storylines would propel pushes into the oncoming Attitude Era. |

Dazu gefiel mir das Finish nicht sonderlich (**1/4) Kane vs Mankind war ein tatsächlich gelungener Brawl , der sein Ziel erfüllte. Foley bumpte mal wieder wie ein irrer um Kane beeindruckend aussehen zu lassen (**3/4) Das letzte Elimination Match war auch über weite Strecken öde und zu Beginn eindeutig zu viel Ahmed Johnson. Zum Ende hin wurde das Match allerdings etwas flotter (**) I-C Title leider zu kurz, aber das Finish gefiel mir hier doch sehr (*) Main Event siehe Matchguide (***). Ein historisches Event, aber eindeutig kein gutes. Kein Elimination Match würde ich als gut bezeichnen, 2 sogar als wirklich schlecht. Das ME hätte soviel besser sein können, aber immerhin konnten Kane und Mankind überraschen. Die Crowd war wie für Kanada üblich den ganzen Abend ziemlich aktiv. Das Event wird immer seinen traurigen Platz in der Geschichte behalten, aber das auch nur durch den historischen Wert des Main Events. |
