NJPW had hundreds of thousands new subscriptions to NJPWWorld thanks to the build to this show and Omega vs Jericho, and they knocked everything out of the park. One of the best Tokyo Domes of all time. This show was as New Japan was about to hit its peak that summer, and was so much fun to watch live. Awesome awesome stuff"

[10.0] "One of the most important events in wrestling history. Included what's probably Chris Jericho's best match of all time, a good main event with Okada/Naito, an excellent four way, and then one of my favorite matches of all time with Goto vs. Suzuki in a hair vs. hair match. Really good card up and down, and just extremely important in the story of professional wrestling."

[7.0] "Wrestle Kingdom 2018 is a supremely overrated event. It's bloated and overly features a lot of gaijin who are getting ready to jump ship to AEW (and one who basically got blacklisted from the mainstream wrestling industry). Yet again, as typical of this era of NJPW, we get another bloated main event with all the requisite stalling until the last five minutes or so. Perhaps the nadir of this event is the English commentary speculating about how many Meltzer stars Okada and Naito are gonna get before the match starts. There aren't any matches that are truly abysmal but everything feels hollow."

The Junior Heavyweight Fatal 4 Way was the match I enjoyed the most, but Ibushi/Cody and Omega's match also deserve their praise."

The main event was great but I expected more. The US TiTle match was pretty fun with Jericho wrestling in one of the best matches of his life ar 45+ years of age. MOTN : Fatal 4 way match for the Iwgp Jr. Title ( Highly entertaining stuff )."

The Okada/Naito was a solid classic. Jericho/Omega lived up to the hype and I loved seeing Jericho outside of WWE for a change. Suzuki/Goto is classic no one ever talks about. I loved it. The whole show in general was very solid. A great show all round."

[10.0] "This is just about the best Wrestle Kingdom ever. There was only one bad match among seven amazing matches. Everything from the tag team matches to the special singles match to the main titles were excellent. The Young Bucks and Roppongi 3k had a great tag team match to open the show. The match showed a new side to the Bucks and proved they could have a psychological match like their match at the G1 finals in 2017. Ibushi vs Cody didn't have a ton of moves but was great and had a big feel. Cody impressed me in the match. LIJ vs KES was awesome and this was the match that got me into KES. They were awesome as big men and properly dominated LIJ for most of the match. Goto vs Suzuki was awesome even compared to other NEVER openweight matches. The fatal four way for the IWGP JR heavyweight title is my pick for the best match on the show and my favorite. All four men were great but Scurll and especially Ospreay stood out in the match. I consider this the best fatal four way of all time. The IWGP IC title match was slow considering the match before but I really liked it. It was Jay White's first match back in NJPW and he didn't disappoint. I thought he was really awesome as a heel and controlled the match for a good amount. Tanahashi was great too and they put on a match worthy of the other ones. I originally didn't feel Jericho vs Omega was as great as it was touted but after a rewatch it was excellent. It really held up as an all time classic and was my second favorite on the show. The main event was the same way as the US title match but after a second watch was amazing too. It was quite worthy of being the main event and I loved it. it was the third best but that is not a slight compared to the others. The worst match was the NEVER openweight six man gauntlet."

I thought the Rumble was entertaining. ** Young Bucks vs 3K was a really good tag team match. **** The Gaunlet match was below average - *1/2 Kota Ibushi vs Cody was a great match - ****1/4 LIJ vs KES was a good match ***1/2 Suzuki vs Goto in my opinion was a great match - ****1/4 The Fatal 4-Way for the Junior Hevyweight Championship was excellent - ****1/2 Tanahahi vs White was for me the biggest disappointment of the event but it was solid - ***1/4 Omega vs Jericho was the MOTN for me, really an amazing match with an amazing story and I loved everything about the match - ****3/4 Okada vs Naito was an excellent main event match but it could've been better even though the story of Naito was great - ****1/2."
DanTalksRasslin wrote on 27.01.2018:
[9.0] "Not quite as strong as the last three Wrestle Kingdoms, but a very good show in its own right. Omega and Jericho turned in the match of the night and an early MOTY contender with a match that felt a lot like an Attitude Era main event brawl, but did still feature lots of good technical wrestling, and had a tremendous build behind it. Okada and Naito had a very good main event, though it did drag a bit toward the end and I would've preferred Naito to go over this time. Elsewhere, the Goto-Suzuki hair match and the four-way spotfest for the Jr. Heavyweight Title served as particular highlights, and the requisite tag and multi-man matches were fun as expected. It did seem like Jay White was rushed into his spot against Tanahashi at such a high-profile event. Overall, lots of great stuff to recommend seeking out here."

[9.0] "Tetsuya Naito vs Kazuchika Okada-I originally rated it 5 stars but I ultimately decided that ****3/4 was the correct rating. It told a tremendous story, had fantastic selling from Okada (which is normally his weak point), the crowd was super hot for both men, but Naito mostly. The sequences were perfectly done, almost everytime besides a noticeable botch here and there. It was a fantastic match. MOTN for sure, only probably is that the Corbra Clutch that they built up in the weeks before, felt like a non factor. Never did it once feel like Naito would tap to it. Sad, only flaw. (****¾ ). Hirooki Goto vs Minoru Suzuki- Felt like a fight, Goto's selling as fantastic, Suzki's facials were great. Fantastic match (****¾). Chris Jericho vs Kenny Omega-5 stars is way too much for this match. It was a bit sloppy in places, Omega called out spots, it was awkward and clunky in parts. But the match was way above my expectations. They made good use of the DQ stip. Omega bumped really well in the match, Jericho's yelling at the fans and heelish antics were a joy to watch. (****¼). Chris Jericho vs Kenny Omega (****¼). Young Bucks vs Roppongi 3K (***¾). Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Jay White (***¾ ). K. E. S vs EVIL and Sanda (***½). Jr 4-Way-The match was fine, it told the stories that New Japan were telling over the past year. But it went way too long and felt bloated. Whilst, it told the story of Himoru being overshadowed, the lack of Himoru Takahahsi really made the match disappointing. Scurll's antics were entertaining but they didnt help the match quality. Fine match (***½). Kota Ibushi vs Cody (***¼). 6 Man Gauntlet (***). Wrestler of the Night: HirookI Goto. MOTN: Naito vs Okada."

Okada VS Naito I feel like I had my expectations too high for it but I will survive. The show as a whole was just so above what I expected it to be but the funny thing is that I was most excited for Okada VS Naito and Tanahashi VS White and those were the only two that fell below my expectations."

[8.0] "Not the best WK in years. The fatal-4 way match was easily the match of the night, and the main event was indeed very good. Also, Omega and Jericho gave us a good fight, a little different from the usual standards of New Japan. Ibushi was also able to finally win a match and making Cody look good. However, the rest was pretty forgettable or badly booked (especially the Tanahashi vs White bout), and it's a surprise to me that I haven't given a single match a 5-star rating. In all these years, after WK, I was saying "well, we already have the best show of the year", but this time I'm not."
JT Grizzle wrote on 07.01.2018:
[7.0] "Very good show, presented well by New Japan. Bucks vs. R3K was solid but nothing special (** 1/2) and the NEVER gauntlet was a lot of fun (***). Kota/Cody was a great match and saw some excellent character work from both men and Brandi Rhodes at ringside (****). KES vs. LIJ was a slobberknocker of a match and all four guys worked hard to produce something good (*** 1/2). Goto/Suzuki was stiff af and really showed what both men are capable of when their not just in multi-man matches filled with intereference (***). The four way was a tad spotty and a bit of a cluster but it was still a lot of fun and Marty and Hiromu got some good character work in there (*** 1/2). The intercontinental title match was disappointing given it's potential but was still good (***). The double main event's were both spectacular and very different matches; Jericho/Omega was an excellent No DQ brawl that over-delivered on the potential quality it had going in (**** 1/2) and Okada/Naito started out slowly, pulling the crowd back down after the excitement of the previous match and then brought them right back up again (**** 1/2). Great stuff and I would certainly suggest that the majority of matches here are well worth watching. If you're not up for the full 5+ hour card start with Rhodes vs. Ibushi and just watch everything from there."

On a Different show this would have gotten more time and they would have been able to do more. We haven't seen the last of this match. NEVER 6 Man Gauntlet: **3/4. Not bad at all. Did go a bit too long. Cody/Ibushi: ***1/3. Cody sucks. Nevertheless, Ibushi is incredible. So we got a good match. Heavyweight Tag Title Match: ***3/4. This could have used more time. Really really good. Good reaction to it too. NEVER title match: ***7/8. Can't pull the trigger on 4 stars for this. Almost great though. Just needed a little more time. Jr title match: ****1/3. Amazing match. Balls to the wall from the start. Didn't have high expectations for this and this just blew me away. IC Title Match: ***3/4. This... should have been better. Very slow, maybe if it had more time it would have developed into a better match. The result is also puzzling. Jericho/Omega: ****1/2. Excellent story told throughout this match. I;m not very high on jericho but this was an excellent match. Main Event: ****3/4. Excellent match. I disagree with the result, but it is what it is. Fantastic match. Fantastic show."

[9.0] "Amazing show but not as good as WK11 which im sure a lot can agree with. Young Bucks vs Roppongi 3K was a good showing by both sides, didn't care for the NEVER 6 man tag match, Cody vs Ibushi was better than expected, the HW tag match was okay but didn't really care for it. Goto vs Suzuki was decent and the 4 way was an incredible match but I was kind of upset with Ospreay winning. Tanahashi vs Jay White was a weird, not very good match but still acceptable, I want to like Jay White, he has the look, good thing he is young and has time to grow. Omega vs Jericho was a great match, Probably Jerichos best match in a while. Y2J kept up with Omega for the entire 34 minutes which was pretty impressive, hope to see more of him in NJPW. the Main Event, albeit the questionable finish, was a fantastic match by 2 of the greatest in New Japan right now. Overall a really good card."

[10.0] "While not on the level of wk9, 10, 11, it is still a phenomenal show. I may be bias because i watched the show live, but i don't think anything on the show was less than good even the ic title match was disappointing, it was still good. One thing i liked this show more than wk 10, 11 because of the strong undercard. Some matches over delivered. Opener was great with great storytelling, selling from both teams. Gauntlet was fine for what it was. Cody/ibushi was way better than i expected. Cody was really good here and ibushi was great as usual. Particular performances with invested crowd. Heavyweight tag match was another strong match, KES looked great. Goto/suzuki finally delivered a great match here. Both were stiff as usual. 4 way was excellent as expected. It was movefest but really fun and entertaining. I didn't complain much. Ic title match was only downside . White looked uncomfortable and seemed not to be ready yet. Jericho/omega exceeded my expections. MOTN easily. Jericho worked hard and omega bumped his ass off here. ME was another excellent match. However, i don't think it was as good as the last 3 wk main events. The booking may be questionable, but time will answer all. Overall, i enjoyed the show a lot. This definitely had a lot of fun. While not everything was perfect, putting a show like this deserved more credit."

[8.0] "A fantastic show, but relatively disappointing by NJPW standards. Roppongi 3K vs Young Bucks was very impressive. I loved the dual back work and how the Young Bucks didn't go spot heavy. Sho and Yoh were passionate but fell to the Bucks' experience. ***3/4. The 6-man NEVER title match was trash as usual. No reason to care about it and some very random pinfalls. **. Ibushi vs Cody was alright. I liked Cody's heel work with Brandi, but he really couldn't keep up with Ibushi in the ring. Ibushi wasn't super interesting himself. He hit his usual signature moves but it didn't feel like there was much story. ***1/4. Killer Elite Squad vs Evil & Sanada was another pretty bland match. KES have never really impressed me, nor have Evil and Sanada as a team. Some fine moments but nothing too exciting. ***. Suzuki vs Goto was very good. I enjoyed how successful Suzuki was early on and how Goto had to really rally himself to pull out the victory. Some very nice strike exchanges. ***3/4. The 4-way junior match was awesome. A spotfest if ever there was one but with some callbacks to Scurll and Ospreay's great history and some very convincing near falls. Lots of creativity involving all 4 wrestlers. ****1/4. Tanahashi vs White was the biggest disappointment. White looked fine, but certainly not like a star, and he lost after all his build up as well (though I'm glad, since he didn't look ready for such a big push anyways). Some fine wrestling and character work but nothing great. ***1/4. Omega vs Jericho was very good, a nice change from the usual NJPW style. Lots of cool spots, though Jericho looked very awkward at times. ***3/4. Okada vs Naito had a nice slow build-up before some great stand-offs, some typical world class exchanges, and then the upset of the century. I loved the interactions these two had, as you saw Naito's desperate frustration and Okada's stoic determination. A very questionable booking decision, but with exciting possibilities. ****1/2"

[8.0] "A show with a troubling card that managed to deliver somewhat. RPG3K vs Bucks was a very nice tag, but it built too slowly for an opener and the crowd was dead, not to mention the odd decision to have the Bucks win; some really nice moments like the kicking standoff (***1/4 to ***1/2). The NEVER Gauntlet was a mixed bag as usual; SZKG vs hosses was decent Yano rolling up Taichi was good stuff; CHAOS vs Taguchi Japan was a very nice little sprint; CHAOS vs BC was carried by Ishii's strength and Beretta's amazing bumping/selling (***+). Cody vs Kota over-delivered by a LOT and was the best match that wasn't for a singles title; Cody played the heel very well (Brandi added a lot to that aspect of the match) while Kota the madman was just trying his best to win; great back-and-forth action with an insane spot to the floor and a strong finishing sequence (****). KES vs LIJ was an extended heat and comeback segment, but it worked; SANADA worked FIP well, as did EVIL as the hot tag (who was quite over) while KES were the monsters that were toppled for a pop (***1/2). Goto had an uphill battle with Suzuki that culminated a full year of SZKG vs CHAOS shenanigans with a near-clean match that had a lot of great struggles and hard-hitting strikes; the post-match ruled (****+). The 4-Way was disappointing; the only moments that I found good involved Hiromu and he was barely in 30% of it (***). Tanahashi worked hurt against a young lion with a bad gimmick and no build (**3/4). Omega & Jericho destroyed expectations; heel Lionheart vs face Kenny in a dirty hardcore brawl that actually felt pretty brisk in pace; there was almost always something interesting being done and some really wild spots kept the crowd hot (****1/4). Okada vs Naito was SLOW, with the usual Okada filler; they got to a point where they got across that they wore each other out, but it didn't fully click with the crowd or me; the finishing sequence was just good and the result was deflating (***1/2)."

Omega vs Jericho stole the show (****3/4), Goto vs Suzuki was GREAT (****), Cody vs Ibushi and Okada vs Naito were both really good (***3/4), and I was glad to see Trent get some gold too but I don't really care for the Junior Tag titles changing hands for the 1000 time as they usually change hands at the big NJPW shows so that really didn't surprise me a whole lot. A story half-a-decade in the making, with a rabid crowd hoping for the fairy tale conclusion, ended instead in heartbreak and a sequel hook. Naito wasn't the only missed opportunity for big moments of catharsis, but it was certainly the most notable one, with many reportedly leaving immediately at the conclusion of the match. All in all, watch it for the amazing matches, and the frankly stunning reaction from the crowd after the main event."

Yano eliminated SZK was a bad joke but I love that Robinson was the winner for his team, **. Ibushi vs Rhodes was surprisingly really good, that spot with Crossrhodes was sick, ***3/4. Heavyweight tag was dominated by KES. The Sanada's comeback in this match was strong, ***. Goto/Suzuki this I was expected from this match, just showcase of Strong Style and it was awesome, ****. Jr heavyweight championship was ultimate spotfest and there was no room for selling in this match. But it was exactly what I needed after the previous match, ***3/4. Tanahashi vs White wasn't good which is disappointing for a match in this spot, **3/4. Omega vs Jericho... I don't think this was a match that I will remember in twenty years for what happened in the ring. This match had ups and downs but overall it was very good. One of the best match in this part of Y2J's career. From quality side of the match this was Omega's average match, ***3/4. Okada vs Naito was MOTN, great storytelling, great drama and the finish sequence was amazing but not an all time classic or best match between these two, ****1/2... Wrestle Kingdom 12 was a disappointing for me. For any other company in the world this would be the best show they had but for New Japan (and mainly WK) standard this was below average."

And while I don't think it had anything the quite the level of Nakamura-Ibushi (WK9), Okada-Tanahashi (WK10), or Okada-Omega (WK11), it may be the show that was most consistently high-level. The gauntlet (***) and Tanahashi-White (***1/4) matches were the low points, but they were still better than stuff like Cole-O'Reilly and Cody-Juice. And this time around, we get 6 arguably ****+ matches as opposed to 4, with Bucks-Roppongi 3K (****), Cody-Ibushi (****1/4), Goto-Suzuki (****1/2), the Jr. 4-way (****1/2), Omega-Jericho (****3/4), and Okada-Naito (****3/4). Once again, NJPW cranks an all-time classic show that shames their competition."

The 3 tag was a little boring (**). Then came Kes vs lij. I can't stand Archer he is really bad imo and doesn't deserve the title so the match was great when the referee count 3 (**1/2). Then Ibushi vs cody. Fun match great spots, the crossrhodes was really dangerous for the iron neck of Kora. (***3/4). The never match was good, I like both wrestler but the result was predictable because of Suzuki haircut ... (***3/4) The fatal four way the second best match of the night, great spotfest, really fun to watch. I regret the fact that hiromu wasn't as implicated as the other men. Marty entrance was beautiful ! (****1/2) Then came tana vs switchblade, I didn't really like this match, I was really boring. White didn't deserve a huge spot like that and we saw that, he didn't really know how to manage the situation. (***1/2). Alpha vs omega was fantastic. Great connection with the public, Jericho gave all he had for one of his best perf of the last decade in a pretty hardcore match. (*****) Finally the main event : Okada and Naito gave a good match but far from being great. It wasn't memorable, the storytelling was basic and the finish too much predictable. (****)"

[10.0] "I thought that on paper this looked like the weakest Dome card in YEARS. Well, I was certainly wrong. This was yet another classic Tokyo Dome show by New Japan. RPG 3K vs. The Bucks was the best Jr. Heavyweight Tag Dome Match quite possibly EVER - amazing performances from everyone involved, in particular YOH (****), the NEVER gauntlet started off in super fun fashion w/ ZSJ killing it against War Machine, but once Yano got involved, it was all downhill from there - happy to see Trent with a title tho (**), Cody/Ibushi was very solid; both guys worked hard & delivered a very smooth & nice back & forth match (***1/4), KES/LIJ started off in very dull fashion, but once I got the storytelling of it, it became very enjoyable - it was all about SANADA's survival of the Squad's brutal onslaught on him - a pretty good match (**3/4), Suzuki/Goto was AMAZING; very different from your usual NEVER title match formula & I loved it - the post-match was really great, too (****1/4), the Jr. Heavyweight 4-Way was trash, absolute trash - worst of the night easily (*), Tanahashi/White was a very basic match, but it had some enjoyable stuff in it - wasn't very impressed w/ Jay tho & Tana dropping the leg selling hurt the match quite a bit (**), Omega/Jericho.... WOW! Was MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than I had ever expected it to be - my favorite Jericho match & performance ever, a Tokyo Dome classic & an early MOTYC (****3/4), then the main event, while the result is quite controversial, I still enjoyed it a ton - some selling & length issues took away from it a bit, but overall a really damn good main event epic (***3/4)."

NEVER gauntlet (**, DUD, ***, ***1/4) as a whole really fun, I'd say overall ***. Cody vs Ibushi was awesome. Cody showed again how great he is and Ibushi bumped his ass off. Great match ****. LIJ vs KES was good ***1/2. Suzuki vs Goto was great and definitely took me by surprise ****. Jr 4 Way was an absolutely insane match. Crazy spotfest, these guys have incredible chemistry. Nice surprise win for Ospreay ****1/2. Tanahashi vs White was really good but felt off. Jay still needs some work ***3/4. Omega vs Jericho was absolutely epic. Incredible in every way and lived up and passed every expectation. One of Jericho's best ****3/4. Okada vs Naito was incredible. Crowd atmosphere made it epic. It was an entertaining match throughout with an insane end sequence, but at the same time I'm not sure about 5*. It took a long time before I was captured by the match and then Okada won which deflated the mood. Wouldn't argue 5* but I think I have to go 4. 75*. Amazing show, one of the best ever. Unlike previous WKs this didn't have any all time classics, but the card was very consistent with two incredible matches to end"
