[0.0] "Shawn is an incredible wrestler but I find it very difficult to get over how much of a total piece of work he was in the 90s. Just a loathsome sounding man whose worst traits bled into his work. Asides from the screw job itself, this and the Vader match at SummerSlam represented the apex of his ugliness, throwing away a WrestleMania main event out of spite and pettiness. It's honestly unbelievable to me that Vince let him main event the year afterwards. Shawn losing his smile, delivered in the smugly insincere manner it was, is one of my least favourite wrestling lines ever."

[2.0] "A great treatise on how full of crap one man can be. Michaels was going for the Oscar here but it was just ridiculous, especially in retrospect. Shawn cries his way out of putting Bret Hart over at Wrestlemania and the crowd mostly just chants for Sid while the camera tries to find the few fans taking is seriously. "I lost my smile" has got to be one of the most eye rolling lines anybody ever came up with, and Michaels with the cheesy Hollywood tears as Vince talks like Shawn is about to go off and never come back. Silly."

[7.0] "This is a hard promo to rate because what was really going on was Shawn Michaels going on a big ego trip surrendering the title instead of putting Bret over at Wrestlemania as he should have done. With that said this did show that whatever kind of character Shawn was playing, he always had the audience at the palm of his hands as you had people going from booing him to people (especially the women) crying in the audience. It's an iconic moment in Raw history for better or worse."

[9.0] "one of my favourite promos / interviews of all time as Michaels takes time away from the ring to heal and battle his demons and surrenders the WWF title. This works in both shoot and kayfabe - shoot in that his words could refer to his ongoing personal and addiction issues, kayfabe in that his injuries are forcing him to step back. The lost my smile comment perfectly captures this. McMahon plays the face interviewer really well also, filling in all the necessary details . The emotion is palpable, he genuinely gets choked up and you can tell he means every word he says. As powerful now as when I first saw it in 1997. Also spawned about 100 memes about losing my smile!"

[8.0] "Diese Promo war wirklich mehr Schauspiel als alles andere aber glaubwürdig und für die Crowd richtig bewegend. Ich fand es gut"

[3.0] "In retrospect, this was shit, Shawns ego was on full display here too, he did show off how good of an actor he is though."

[2.0] "An solchen Umständen erkennt man klar den Ego-Michaels der 90er im Vergleich zur geläuterten Ikone zu seinen späteren Schaffenszeiten. Hier gibt er sich lieber diesem schwermütigen Schmierentheater hin, statt sich professionell im Ring bei Hart für den Sieg im Iron-Man Match zu revanchieren. Da er zwei Jahre zuvor beim Syracuse-Vorfall bereits einen ähnlichen Auftritt hatte, kann man ihm das hier schon per se nicht abnehmen, seine tatsächliche Intention ist einfach zu offensichtlich. Gut geschauspielert, aber charakterlich ist das alles im Grenzbereich. Zudem schadet er mit diesem Gehabe auch dem Titel, dem Titelpicture und dem gesamten Aufbau für Wrestlemania. Unnötige Krokodilstränen mit schädlicher Konsequenz."

[9.0] "At the beginning of the promo, fans were booing HBK and cheering when he mentioned the names of Bret Hart and Psycho Syd. But as he was closing out the promo, he brought many of them to tears. Any time you can impact a crowd that greatly, going from feeling hatred to sympathy in about seven minutes, is good mic work in my book."

[4.0] "This is not a good retirement promo, fans were not on Michaels side at that time and it did not seem real for many people."

[3.0] "Inhaltlich richtig gut vorgetragen und das passt auch von den Emotionen her, aber wenn man die wahren Hintergründe kennt, dann ist das einfach nur traurig. Michaels will sich nicht für Bret bei Wrestlemania hinlegen und dann kommt so eine Schmierenkomödie dabei raus. Traurig."

[9.0] "Mal den wahren Hintergrund außen vor gelassen, hat HBK hier eine wirklich tolle Leistung abgeliefert. Da kann ich nur 9 Punkte für geben. Wenn man die wahren Gründe für die Titelabgabe berücksichtigt dürfte diese Promo bloß 2 Punkte - wenn überhaupt bekommen -, ja."

[9.0] "Die erste Promo, die ich jahrelang auf Video mit mir mitgeschleift hab und so oft gesehen hab, dass das Video irgendwann starb. Muss also gut gewesen sein, sonst haette ich es mir nicht so oft reingezogen. Grossartig gemacht und egal, was fuer ein realer Hintergrund da war, mich hat es in jungen Jahren sehr beeindruckt und ich hab geheult, wie ein Schlosshund."

[2.0] "Billige Schauspielerei von HBK, um für Bret Hart nicht das zu tun, was der vor einem Jahr für ihn getan hat. Ihm den Titel übergeben! Einfach charakterlos und egoistisch. Michaels war damals echt unausstehlich!"

[10.0] "Ich bewerte einfach mal nur die Promo und nicht den realen Hintergrund. HBK hat hier ein Meisterwerk auf die Beine gestellt!"

[8.0] "Der wirkliche Grund für diese Promo ist schon "ganz großes Kino" von HBK! Die Promo an sich war bewegend und emotional, zog sich aber auch etwas sehr lange hin."

[6.0] "Sehr bewegende und historisch bedeutsame Promo die auch ein bisschen traurig macht. Leider nicht ohne Längen und auch rhethorisch nicht so der Knüller. Außerdem ist der wirkliche Grund für die Pause erbärmlich."
