"If Andre's got any guts he'll agree to wrestle my man next week!"
Date:

YouTube:
Vince McMahon: "You know sooner or later someone is going to come along, and it's going to be a bad night for Andre The Giant. One of these days, unless you retire undefeated, one of these days someone will defeat you."

Andre The Giant: "I know. Just before I was 'Andre The Giant', there was another guy before me, he was Don Leo Jonathan, he was the biggest one [see Note 1]. Now I am the biggest one and even Don Leo Jonathan told me, he says 'Someday you're going to find a guy who gonna do what you did to me.' And uh, I know that will happen someday, maybe now, but I'm ready for that. Don Leo said that."

Vince McMahon: "That's the thing, you have to ready for it, you have to be ready for it all. The different type person they're going to give ya. Some are really really big men, some are strong. Some, uh, would be more rotund. Some would have more speed. Some would have more agility and things of that nature. You've got to take--" [Freddie Blassie and Hulk Hogan walk on camera, interrupting the interview.]

Freddie Blassie: "We're back there and we're listening to what this big monstrosity's talking about. He's this and he's that. So he's seven foot five? So he's undefeated? So he's tough? But I've got a man right here that is equal, in fact he's superior, to this big giant here! Look at him glaring at my man! My man will stuff him up one nostril and blow him out the other! Undefeated? Undefeated for what?! Every guy that this guy has wrestled, my man has gone right in behind him and defeated the man that you defeated in less time than you defeated him. You think you're so tough and everything!"

Vince McMahon: "Alright, wait a minute, let me take that to Andre. Andre, Fred Blassie claims that- that Hulk Hogan has defeated every man that you have defeated, but it took him less time to do that. Your reaction to that?"

Andre The Giant: "I know we have to come at one point, we have to go into the ring together. [Freddie Blassie, off-mic: 'Why don't we do it next week?'] Because he says he's ready for it, but I know I'm ready for it already too, ok?"

Vince McMahon: [to Freddie Blassie] "Wait a minute, wait a minute, what did you say?"

Freddie Blassie: "I said if Andre's got any guts he'll agree to wrestle my man next week!" [see Note 2]

Andre The Giant: "Anytime you want! [Freddie Blassie: 'Well I want it!'] I accept that challenge!"

Freddie Blassie: "I want it! [Andre The Giant: 'I accept this challenge!'] I want it! I want it for uh, for next week!"

Andre The Giant: "And I accept the challenge!"

Freddie Blassie: "Well, alright!"

Vince McMahon: "Alright wait just a minute. Alright wait, please? Please? Alright? [to Freddie Blassie] Do you know what this means? Andre has proven himself world-wide. If Hulk Hogan is up to this, if Hulk Hogan can, as he apparently thinks he can, defeat Andre The Giant, he will become the biggest man, literally as well as figuratively, in pro-wrestling today!"

Freddie Blassie: "That's right, 'The Eighth Wonder of the World' will be demolished! He's going to demolish 'The Eighth Wonder of the World'."

Vince McMahon: "And a--"

Andre The Giant: "You better be here next week, because I'll be here and I'm ready for that match!"

Vince McMahon: "Alright--"

Freddie Blassie: "If you think we're not gonna be here you're crazy as a hoot-owl!"

[Andre The Giant walks off camera, waving his hand dismissively towards Blassie and Hogan.]

Vince McMahon: "Alright Hulk Hogan [Hogan has turned to watch Andre walk off], let me have you if we may please. Mr. Hogan? [Andre has walked back on camera. He and Hogan exchange words off-mic.] Wait just a minute. If we could... Now wait gentlemen, please, this is not the time, and this is not the place, please. A challenge has been made for next week, Andre has accepted that challenge but please, let's not have anything here, Thank you very much. Now Hulk Hogan, this is a shining moment of glory Hulk Hogan, I can tell you that--"

Andre The Giant: [to Vince McMahon] "You do me lots of favour all the time, can I ask you one favour?"

Vince McMahon: "Yes?"

Andre The Giant: "Why we not go in the ring right now?"
- Note 1: Don Leo Jonathan, nicknamed 'The Mormon Giant', engaged in many high profile matches with Andre The Giant throughout the 1970s, but it's their initial rivalry (when Andre was billed as 'Le Géant Jean Ferré') that is most well known, culminating in an event billed as "The Match of the Century" on the 28th January 1974. Dave Meltzer described this feud as "...with the exception of Hulk Hogan or maybe John Studd or Killer Khan, the biggest of Andre’s career"

- Note 2: It's difficult to verify exactly when this confrontation took place: The official WWE YouTube video states it is in 1979, but this seems implausible as Andre and Hogan's first televised match was not until the 26th July 1980. This date makes it likely this promo was taped on the 9th July 1980 in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, USA, for an episode of WWF All Star Wrestling that was broadcast on the 19th July.

[7.0] "A fascinating promo to watch, especially considering that WWE's "official" history that they push starts in 1984. Andre as the babyface, Hogan as the heel who doesn't say a single word into the mic, it's all really unlike what you get exposed to without properly digging into the history of wrestling. Blassie does a really solid job on the mic here."
