Todd Pettengill: "I'm here with Bob Backlund and he did exactly what he said he would do. Agree or disagree with his tactics, he is now two-time WWF Champi-"

Bob Backlund: "Wait, wait a minute. First of all, young man, it's MISTER Bob Backlund. And you're incorrect: I've been the champion since 1978. I never lost the Championship. Tonight, I just regained the belt. [see Note below] And I beat the man that represents your society. I beat him so I could SAVE you! I'm gonna scrutinise you, to the fullest! Pasteurise you! Homogenise you! And synchronise you! Back into MORAL-ity!

You understand, ladies and gentlemen? It's sports education. I'm YOUR champion! And I'll take on aaaanybody.

[Dropping his voice to a whisper]
Anybody at all ladies and gentlemen. And your generation, cos I'm fighting for something that's more important than anything in this world, it's putting morality back into your lives and now your children have somebody that they can emulate after and try to catch up to [shouting] COS I FEEL LIKE GODDDDD!!"

- Note: There was some deliberate irony in the way this match was booked as Backlund's first reign (which lasted from 20 February 1978 to 26 December 1983) came to an end against The Iron Sheik after Backlund's manager Arnold Skaaland threw in the towel. Because of this, Backlund claimed to have never really "lost" the championship.
