I think there is too many great matches from this title that I don't have the time to name them all so i won't but i will say it's a very prestigious title and it deserves respect and recognition."

[10.0] "I'd say AJPW's Triple Crown absolutely demolishes this belt through the nineties, meaning absolutely no disrespect, but the IWGP heavyweight title would in later decades come to represent the 'best wrestler alive' status that some belts could only ever dream of. It became a marker of the best guy in the world when it was held by Tanahashi, Styles, Okada and Omega in quick succession. Those reigns elevated what was a good past and history into something legitimate and concrete, a belt that stretched back to Inoki finally given the legitimacy a figure like him deserved. The belt was never 'less-than' or poorly booked, but it had now become the stuff of legends. To this day, it remains one of the finest prizes in the sport and its recent wearers, Takeshita, Newman, and the insanely talented ZSJ, are all worthy of such an honor and will, in time, make that belt shine all the brighter on the backs of their own stardom."

[10.0] "You would find it reasonably hard to find a bad match contested for this title(can't say about before 2012) because the Wrestlers themselves can't help but give their all in these matches. The IWGP Heavyweight Title is the symbol of excellence, and sits on the top as the most prestigious belt in all of Pro Wrestling in my opinion. When Wrestlers like Minoru Suzuki, Tomohiro Ishii have failed to win a title, it means that it is more than just a title. Every match feels big, atmosphere is unrivalled and the performances are nothing short of amazing. And if that wasn't enough, it just had to have the most beautiful title design since the Big Gold. Great Belt with Great Lineage and History(with a few outliers as well, ofcourse)."

[10.0] "[9.7] Oh, IWGP Heavyweight Championship, you're as beautiful as the day we lost you. This is genuinely just the best main belt in wrestling. Gorgeous design across every era, feels like the biggest deal in wrestling, has a lineage of tons and tons of the best to ever do it (and Brock Lesnar.) I genuinely have no clue why they ever got rid of it. Very excited to see it back."
joniii wrote on 07.01.2026:
[10.0] "Now that the IWGP Heavyweight title is back, it's going to be interesting to see the continuation of this lineage and where it goes after the 5 year break. What's for certain though is that this is one of the most prestigious titles in pro wrestling of all time. If not the most prestigious, considering the WWE title, its biggest competitor for that spot, has had some absolute stinkers in the mid 2010s. Regardless of that though. The IWGP Heavyweight title's lineage stands out as tremendous. And I'm personally excited to see what Tsuji will do with it from now. Even if I don't currently believe his potential to be an ace."

[10.0] "The Belt. Even the slow start, lackluster years, and dreadful champions like Lesnar and Sapp, it remained they prize. All the aura and beauty of the big gold belt, all the prestige and pomp of the wwe belt, and all endless great matches that defined the belt. No belt had such an invincible aura around it like this one. It really felt like nothing could diminish it and that every great match and rivalry only added to it."
user302 wrote on 14.03.2025:
[10.0] "For my money, the greatest champion in the history of wrestling. Perhaps there have been some "bad" champions over the years, but none of them ever felt like a champion that wasn't believable. Every champion felt believable. The belt just had that aura around it. The design was perfect. Some of the greatest matches of all time were contested by people fighting for this belt. I wish they hadn't retired it, but at the same time it does feel kinda cool that this belt has such an amazing legacy and it can never be tarnished. I loved how they would play a slide show of all the previous champions before each title defense. It felt like every defense you were witnessing history, there was no such thing as a throwaway title match. Every opportunity a wrestler had at this title was to be taken seriously. Chef's kiss, this is how you get a belt over."

Not only it's one of the most beautiful belts ever but the matches it has provided and the lineage of champions render it the single most prestigious championship in wrestling. I get that at the time the title was inactivated NJPW was having hard times with everything but at least now they have to either bring it back alongside its legacy or just make the WHC look like this."
Willie 19200 wrote on 15.01.2025:

Every design of this belt was beautiful and should've never been changed, the new belt design is still cool, however the lineage shouldn't have stopped, they should've continued the same lineage, and just change the belt design if they really wanted to, even though the fourth version of the belt design is my favorite belt designs in history. Overall the greatest championship in wrestling history."

With a lineage only rivaled by the WWE title and the Triple Crown, New Japan really f'ed the dog on this one, as the power ranger title just couldn't have the history of this one."

Personally, I think it's the most prestigious and beautiful title in history, along with the WHC at the time, but I still put it above it because it really evokes excellence and talent. Not least because of the legends who have held the title, such as Hiroshi Tanahashi, Inoki, Keiji Mutoh, AJ Styles, Kenny Omega and the greatest title-holder of all: Kazuchika Okada! These and many other wrestlers delivered the classics that made this belt so prestigious, and even today, 3 years after its removal, I still miss this championship."

For me this was the single most prestigious belt in wrestling at the time of its death. New Japan lost something when they put an end to this title. Something they have never gotten back, something I fear they never will. 5 stars."

The only positive of its retirement is that you can look at its history, and say without any doubt or any future fuckery that this is absolutely one of the best belts in the history of professional wrestling, and it's not even close. I think the fact some of the best matches to have ever happened have been fought for this belt, that alone cements it as such. And it was beautiful. So classic yet modern in it's design, and truly one of a kind. Such a shame it's no longer active, but at least it ended with an amazing legacy."

Definitely a cornerstone of professional wrestling history, was a little sad they got rid of this lineage in favour of a new one - and I suppose Okada was with me.. but the new belt is becoming a worthy successor. Still, this lineage is untouchable. Matches constantly had a big fight feel, especially under legendary champions such as Yuji Nagata, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, etc. I would actually go as far as to say that Okada's incredible 720-day reign from 2016-2018 is perhaps the greatest title reign in wrestling history purely based on match quality, and forever raised the bar even higher for the few successors after him. Loved this title, it was always relevant and always respected. [10/10]"

Ibushi is legitimately one of my favourite wrestlers, but the merger with the Intercontinental and the production of the power rangers belt definitely ended the life of this title on a down note."

This is a belt that goes all the way back to Antonio Inoki and has been held by some of the all time greatest wrestlers. A history that can be traced through some of the most iconic matches of all time, some of the best fights ever seen. Personally I still consider it a continuous title despite the name/design change, but no matter what it's undeniably the greatest prize in professional wrestling."

Not many wrestlers felt like they had what it takes to be the IWGP Heavyweight Champion which made people like Tana or Okada stand out even more. It's incredibly sad that the legacy is gone and that beautiful design isn't seen in the current world of wrestling anymore."

Kazuchika Okada's fourth and record 700+ days is imo the greatest Championship reign in any professional wrestling promotion."

From becoming the first champion in the person of Antonio Inoki, to the historically important title dates of Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi. A huge number of matches of the year and 5 star battles. Stories going on for decades ending in fights for this title. 6 and 7 star matches of Kenny Omega and Okada, which have already gone down in history and are described in textbooks. The heritage of all Japanese wrestling is definitely the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. Watch Any match for this title of any year, and you will understand that the culture of this sport is limitless."

Not unfair to say, IMO. every single match for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship felt like the most important in the entire industry. Compounded by how difficult it was to win, and how exclusive the list of champions generally was, it's an easy 10/10."

If you ever think about going into the business, having this title around your waist at one point in your career should be an ultimate goal. So many legends have held this, Inoki, Fujinami, Vader, Choshu, Muta, Chono, along with many future legends, like Tanahashi, Okada, AJ, Omega, Naito, and recently Ibushi. Just. Fucking. Perfection."

Similar to the Triple Crown during the 90s, this belt has been defended in some of the greatest matches of this current era and has also been held by some of the best wrestlers in the business today. Barring a strange reign from Evil, this title has been booked super well ever since I started watching the promotion."

Some of the greatest matches have happened for this title and it's had some of the greatest championship reigns in wrestling history. Kazuchika Okada's 4th IWGP Heavyweight title reign is the greatest title I've ever seen and his reign alone makes this title an easy 10/10. Since Okada's 4th title reign the title hasn't been booked nearly as strong with the exception of Okada's 5th title reign which was also great. Omega, Tanahashi, Jay White, Naito and EVIL have also been champion over recent years, Yet no reign has been as epic as an Okada reign. They've all had great matches, but Okada is the man who elevated this title to even greater heights. Despite a few poor booking choices, this tite has remained very prestigious with countless classics such as it's most recent classic from Wrestle Kingdom 15. Let's hope Kota Ibushi has a successful reign."
