| 1 | 11.05.2025 | bherbert1980 | 8.0 | This was the first time WWE tried to give the Hardy Boyz a distinct identity outside of "those guys who bump like crash dummies." Under Gangrel's dark tutelage, they traded in neon gear for mesh tops, eyeliner, and blood baths. It was part gothic theater, part coming-of-age arc for Matt and Jeff, and while the gimmick didn't last long, it gave the Hardys the edge and mystique that helped them stand out. The most significant moment of their New Brood run came with the Terri Invitational Tournament against Edge and Christian. That best-of-five series culminated in the legendary ladder match at No Mercy 1999, a match that didn't just steal the show--it rewrote the playbook for tag team wrestling. That ladder match launched both teams into superstardom and proved that the future of the business belonged to high-risk innovators. The New Brood may have dissolved quickly, and Gangrel eventually faded from the picture, but the run served its purpose. It gave the Hardy Boyz their first real character arc, helped them stand toe-to-toe with Edge and Christian, and placed them directly on the path toward becoming Team Extreme. A transitional gimmick that gave the Hardys their first taste of character-driven storytelling. The New Brood didn't last, but it lit the fuse for one of the most iconic tag teams in wrestling history. |
