[4.0] "A team that was over for about a year entirely on the back of Road Dogg's opening schtick. It was fun stuff but it's also why they didn't last and didn't make much of a dent in the history of tag team wrestling. They were good characters but when your entire run is less than 2 years at your peak, you haven't accomplished much."

[1.0] "Road Dogg gives his standard "Ladies and gentlemen" patter to start out. A very boring match follows. Dogg proves why he's considered the worst mat wrestler in the James family and Mr. Ass does Mr. Ass things. Dogg might further run his mouth afterward. Somehow, that incredibly boring and repetitive formula kept this team made up of two mediocre clods going for well over a decade off and on. The only positive thing I can say about Dogg Ass is that at least they weren't as bad as BG James' other team The 3 Live Kru."

Back in '97, they were not just my favorite tag team of the time, but they were my favorite overall act, including going up against singles' stars. They were fresh & edgy. I liked them most when they were on their own before joining with DX. But they were also great as a part of DX. They were an act that helped to create the Attitude Era."

[7.0] "Others have said it already but if ever there was an example of 2+2=5 it was these guys. They were over like rover in the Attitude era, so much so that the WWE tried splitting them a few times because they were convinced that one (or both) of them could make it as a singles. But nope. Road Dogg was only a star in this team, and Billy Gunn was only a star as part of this team and other teams. Were either of them great workers? Ehhh... Not really. But at that time you only got a couple of minutes for a match anyway and they were usually a schmoz finish or something, so in a way they were the perfect team for the time. I always hated their name though - "New Age" like crystals and stuff? Incense?"

[10.0] "They are not the most polished team ever, but they had great chemistry with the crowd and great chemistry with each other. They were the right fit in Degeneration-X at the right time. There could have a compelling feud with almost in team because they could draw heat. Fans loved them and loved to hate them."

[8.0] "They was an impactful team that came together at just the right time where they was both entirely new characters that came along right when DX was pushing the envelope with the beginning of the Attitude Era and they fit in to that perfectly with them soon joining DX in the second run with Triple H as the leader, whilst they would try to outdo the DX antics when Shawn Michaels was the leader. I've said many times that one of the reasons NAO got over so quickly was because very early on Mick Foley and Terry Funk took some insane bumps for them. They was very early in their run when they did the famous spot with the dumpster. They was a hot new act when they first got together where Road Dogg had the charisma and Billy Gunn carried the team with the wrestling. Unfortunately one thing that hasn't aged well with them for me is that when they dominated the tag team division mostly in 1998, it became a total wasteland where none of the other teams was ever close to them in terms of star power and because of that the act got really stale for me because they was lacking strong rivals and they only had a handful of good matches in that run! They had a good rivalry with Rock n' Sock when they got together and there was a bit of a civil war when they had matches with Kane and X-Pac, but by the time Edge & Christian, The Hardys and The Dudleys rose to the top they fell aside. Another thing that hurt the Outlaws for me was when they split the team for the failed singles pushes with Road Dogg surprisingly having the better run with the Hardcore Title while Billy Gunn had a big singles heel push that flopped badly. They had an entertaining run as a Tag Team for sure, but I don't think they are one of the greatest of all time."

I'd only watch them if the nwo was on for example (I HATED the nwo, greatest go away heat ever imagined, I still go away heat hate it & pardon the digression, it has a purpose). When Jim Ross would say they were the greatest or best or blah blah blah I would laugh like Edna Krabappel then change the channel. About 5 or 7 years ago I saw them again and enjoyed it. One is the mouth, who is also the bump taking face in peril. The other is the Dumb Blonde Beefcake who got the hot tag and GETS THINGS DONE. I like it. I had to discredit it and totally bypass it in youth, to appreciate it in my deeper age. If I live long enough to watch them all over again I am sure to have recommended watches or might even shift my tune a bit. But as it stands - they won me over, it just took almost decades. Also, my word! Have you ever seen such crowd control? Remarkable. 7.25"

I swear this is the most overrated tag team of all time, and it is not even close to me. They never deliver, they just have the most boring middle of the pack matches of all time. The Mandela effect was made off the backs of these guys, and the effect is believing that they are a hall of fame level tag team. Just absolute nothing has come from them inside the ring for me, just meh after meh after meh"

Together they did good business, I honestly prefer The Smoking Gunns to be honest but I'm rating New Age Outlaws higher because unlike Smoking Gunns New Age Outlaws were draws and extremely over."

Plus i got to see Billy Gunn hit Road Dogg with a lightsaber when i met them in person, so they were funnier then too :)"

Please tell me what tag team is more over with the crowd than THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD! Seriously wrestling is about entertainment and nobody entertained more than the road dogg Jesse James and the bad ass billy Gunn. These guys, and those of you who actually watched them know this, got as loud if not louder crowd reactions then stone cold and the rock. I remember back in 98 or 99 i was like 10 or 11 and I told my mom I wanted a wrestling shirt for Christmas and at the time most of them were suggestive or vulgar so she bought me a road dogg shirt because on the front it just said, OH YOU DIDNT KNOW. What my mother didn? t know was that on the back it said, YOUR ASS BETTER CALL SOMEBODY. Lol still the best Christmas present and gets talked about regularly to this day. Take your work rate and shove it up your ass you nerds, try enjoying wrestling for once."

[8.0] "The New Age Outlaws are such a weird anomaly in wrestling. Both members have been around forever – even when they first got together they were both relative veterans – and neither of them has really EVER been successful outside of their run together. Both have obvious flaws – Gunn is a nothing-special midcarder who doesn't really stand out in any way, Road Dogg is great on the mic but an awful worker. When they first joined forces, I don't think anyone expected them to be anything but awful. But put them together and somehow you have one of the most successful and entertaining tag teams of all time. There's just something about the two of them together."
DanTalksRasslin wrote on 23.03.2016:

They did, however, have a great dynamic between them, with Gunn as the one to handle the heavy lifting in the ring and Road Dogg as the mouthpiece who could verbally draw either support or animosity from the crowd. They also took part in many memorable angles and entertaining antics, and were one of the more memorable acts in Attitude Era WWF."

But when you look at their whole body of work I can't help but love this team, a thrown together duo who should have never worked but who played off each other perfectly and not only had good matches but also frequently had the crowd in the palm of their hand. Love these two together, probably the best thing either of them either did and just a great tag team to go back and watch!"

They didn't belong in the ring with the LOD, much less beat them down. The rating is ALL attiributed to Gunn's efforts and dedication."

Leone wrote on 14.12.2012:
[8.0] "individually, these 2 guys were quite ordinary. Road Dogg is fantastic on the mic, but his wrestling, while full of theatrics, at its core was very basic and his finisher looked more like a wear-down move than a way to end a match. Billy Gunn is an excellent athlete with a great demonstration of power mixed with agility, but his mic skills weren't up to much. Together, they were 1 of the most fun tag teams in the attitude era, and they had great chemistry in their matches. Their entrance was also a highlight of the show that got the fans heavily involved. As the first team who held the tag belts 5 times, they had victories over a number great teams, from The Rock & Sock Connection to The Road Warriors. But outside of their success in the WWF attitude era, it is questionable that the team would have had the same impact anywhere else and at any time. Overall, 8, for their time together in the attitude era."
