A definite top 10 all time guy who is often forgotten these days when it comes to GOAT discussions."

While he wasn't a great wrestler in the traditional sense, he was a good brawler and worked for his character. Now that the dust has settled he comes off as more of an element of American pop culture than an in ring competitor, even down to his territory work. Often infectiously entertaining; but at his worst, the casual racism is too casual and some of his stuff is tragically BAD and difficult to watch (a massive heaping helping of his promos make NO SENSE). The good Hot Rod is legendary, the bad is very verrrry poor. After debating a point rating for some time, I decided to go the math route: A potential 10, with enough casual racism and "off the rails" stuff that makes me fast forward, scramble for mute or just get pissed off to the point where it's a 5.75 rounded up. HOWEVER! While "They Live" is not wrestling, it IS enough to boost his rating a whole point. Proceed with caution. 6.75 rounded up."

This guy was an over achiever and the fact that he might've got some consideration for being the top guy in a promotion is a testament to his skill on the mic and his politics backstage. It's surprising that he's rated ahead of Hogan on this site. Probably he was more influential on the next generation of wrestlers than Hogan. He can't be a 10 because while he made the most of his talent, he was just a little too small and lacked the athletic skill of a Micheals or a Bret Hart, smaller guys who did take that next step."
[10.0] "The man without whom there would be no rock'n'wrestling era and who was the best heel of the 80s and a pretty good face in the 90s when he was going to left the company. Roddy had a lot of really bad matches in his career both in his best years and an endless bunch of thrash in WCW and upon his return to the WWE, when he was already worn out by injuries, but still his memorable character, skills on the microphone and charisma outshine all bad. However he's had quite a few good matches nonetheless, like the match with Bret Hart when he passed the torch, as well as the legendary feuds with Hulk Hogan, Jimmy Snuka and the Guerrero dynasty. A very talented person who was able to connect with an audience. In his early years, he could cause the heat and put his life in danger more than once when fans literally rioted. At the same time, at WrestleMania 3, fans supported him almost more than the main star of the show, Hulk Hogan. Roddy made an invaluable contribution to the development of the industry, becoming an example for many future generations of wrestlers."

People who criticize him as a worker are the kind who expect to see 30 different flips, super-kicks and false finishes while no-selling everything to move from one contrived planned spot to another. Roddy told stories in his matches, and he told them well. He was a brawler, a scrappy, half-insane, loud-mouthed fighter who could talk a mile a minute. He possessed the innate skill that any pro wrestler or entertainer in general wants and that is the ability to connect with an audience."

Very charismatic, good look - very different from everyone else, mic skills - 10, but his in ring skills weren t all that great. His selling was comical at times, which I am not a fan of, his thumb to the eye, back rake, working punches, etc - his moveset was lacking. But he compensated for it by being the personality he was. What I ve always found strange was, that he was supposed to be Scottish (Glasgow, if I remember correctly ) and he never even tried to sound even remotely Scottish. It probably would have been hard to pull off, since he talked so much and so fast, plus most people probably didn? t even know what Scottish accent sounded like, so it didn? t matter to anyone."
[5.0] "The nostalgia is strong with this one. A punch kick guy and not much of a worker. Was on the juice but not a great physique. Famous for promos but basically spoke nonsense. Decent seller. Charismatic. Knew how to work crowd and more importantly protect character. Felt taking the leg drop would kill his mystique so he never got a signature run. Left a lot of money on table. Had very few televised matches of any quality until he returned after Hell Comes to Frog Town and his TV pilot. Associated with early Hogan Era due to war to settle the score but rarely appeared on TV outside Piper? s Pit. Orndorf did all the working in his Wrestlemania main event. Villian on Hulk Hogan? s Rock n Wrestling cartoon. Sang? For Everybody? on first wrestling album. Heenan and brother love probably took more bumps than Piper after WM1 on TV. Innovative announcer and personality in Portland. Even without personality quirks and departures would never have been able to compete with the far more compelling and talented Randy Savage or even Ted DiBase. Was wise to make himself scarce, because his hackneyed and boring matches exposed his huge limitations in ring. Should get a 4 for ring skill and clownish selling. 8 for personality. 6 for actual content of what he said."
[10.0] "My god was it fun to watch anything the Hot Rod was involved in in the 80s, even in the early 90s. I wish I had a way to easily watch more of his NWA action. Might not have been the most technical or most intriguing in the ring, but he was a wildman and hella over."
[9.0] "A sensational draw in his heyday, probably one of the biggest stars then in terms of crowd investment: Piper was a master in getting your attention if it was him either being in the actual match or just operating around it, and could at ease play with their emotions just fine from blinding rage to heavy cheers. Sure, he was never that well put together in the ring and wasn't a technical masterclass but he DREW so much in every generation of wrestling he was in (well apart from the New Gen but that wasn't quite his fault) and knew how to adapt to who he was playing up to and who he was facing. He's more of a entertainer than a pure wrestler if that makes sense, focusing less on workrate and more on intense storytelling and a more scrappy style. Make no mistake about it, he's definitely got a whole barrel of pretty solid matches under his belt. His rapid fall in terms of wrestling quality in the mid 90's due to a mix of age and wear and tear was rough, even if he was still over. Less said about his bizarre WWE 2003 run, the better. He's a legend of the ring and a hallmark of character wrestlers in a age where nearly everyone had a colourful gimmick: the difference between them and him was that he lived his gimmick to the full, to the point where I'd argue there wasn't a difference at all between the two."

In Mid Atlantic became so hated that it got to the point where fans couldn't boo him anymore and started cheering. The same happened in WWF, he was a big reason for the WWFs success in 1984-85 and he was one the best heels of all time. Later work in WCW was not so great but was already cemented as a Legend by then."

Als ich dann aber auch Kommentare von ihm gelesen habe (zu den vielen Todesfällen von Wrestlern der vergangenen Jahre) war ich nicht mehr überrascht. Piper ist zwar älter geworden als die meißten von ihnen, aber er scheint es zumindest vorhergesehen zu haben. Mir wird er jedenfalls nicht nur als ein genialer Entertainer im Wrestling in Erinnerung bleiben, sondern auch als Schauspieler (John Carpenter, sie leben, 1988). War zwar technisch betrachtet ebenfalls keine Offenbarung, aber ein toller Brawler. Im Ring hat er coole Matches geliefert und in Fehden immer begeistert durch seinen Unterhaltungswert, konnte also auch aus schlechtesten Geschichten zumindest noch etwas gutes heraus holen. Seine anderen, wahren Talente waren klar ersichtlich, als Moderator / Kommentator brachte er Fans oftmals nicht nur zum lachen, sondern löste wahre Beifallsstürme aus. Man fieberte ständig mit ihm mit, gönnte ihm jeden Erfolg oder bedauerte jeden Verlust von ihm. Er hatte einfach viel Charisma (gepaart mit seinem Legendenbonus), war sehr sympathisch und er wußte das natürlich auch optimal zu nutzen. Selbst als absoluter Heel konnte man nicht anders, man mußte ihn einfach mögen ... R. I. P."

Für mich ist Roddy Piper sogar der beste Mic Worker aller Zeiten und er hatte meiner Meinung nach, die beste Mimik der Wrestlinggeschichte. Den Höhepunkt seiner Karriere, hatte er wohl als er zusamen mit Paul Orndorff und Bob Orton gegen Hogan fehdete. Zu der Zeit hat er mir auch am besten gefallen. Sonst hatte er noch echt gute Fehden gegen Wrestler wie Rick Rude , Jimmy Snuka und Adrian Adonis. Für das was Piper im Ring zeigte, gebe ich ihm 4 Punkte und für die Mic Fähigkeiten 10 Punkte. Das macht 7 Punkte für Piper."

I suggest that for wrestlers past a certain age, or no. of years wrestling, or no. of years since they have been fully active, or maybe when they are eligible for WON HOF they have three different rating scores: The score they have gathered all along can be closed, and finalized. A score representing their prime (which voters could vote on henceforth). And a score representing the voters' opinion of their career as a whole (to be voted on henceforth). One of the few misses in the WWE's legacy, just like not doing Flair vs. Hogan at Wrestlemania VIII, was not having the inaugural Wrestlemania (at the peak of Piper's feud with Hogan) main evented by a singles match between the two. Better still, if Piper would have taken the title at The War To Settle The Score, but thats just fantasy booking, I guess."

Die Pitepisoden waren immer wieder überraschend und ziemlich derb. Er hatte einen großen Anteil daran die WWF in den amerikanischen Mainstream zu etablieren. Seine Wrestlingfähigkeiten waren schlecht, etwas Brawlen und ein paar Basicmoves. In der WCW dann nur noch Witzfigur und NWO-Opfer."

[6.0] "Piper's Pit wird uns immer als legendäres Segment verkauft, dennoch finde ich Piper insgesamt nicht mehr zeitgemäß und überholt. Der Sleeper Hold war vielleicht noch in den Neuzigern ein probates Mittel, aber in jüngerer Zeit kaum noch gesehen. Zwar ist er recht charismatisch, dennoch fand ich den Tag Titel Gewinn mit Flair, sowie das Survivor Series Match mit den anderen alten S+#*en völlig daneben... aber so ist die WWE manchmal einfach :-/"

Honestly, he's one of the legends in this business who I still love and respect so much today! Whenever he makes a rare WWE TV appearance and I hear his music, I still smile and pop to this day and rightfully so! Thank god that he never fell into the category of legends who have disappointed me or made me hate them or get bored of them! That was never the case with Roddy Piper and I believe part of the reason why is not just because of his legendary status in wrestling and him being one of the most colorful characters ever in wrestling like I said before, but because of the person he is in real life! He's very respectful and humorous and I love that about him!"

[3.0] "Am Mikrofon eine absolute Sensation, aber leider im Ring eine Zumutung. Wenn er einen guten Gegner hatte, konnten Pipers Schwächen schnell kaschiert werden, aber gegen Leute, die selber keine Genies zwischen den Seilen sind, war ein Schnarch-Festival garantiert."

Pipers Promos sind durchweg authentisch und glaubwürdig und selbst im hohen Alter bei seinen seltenen Auftritten bei RAW steht die Halle Kopf wenn er sich ein Mikrofon schnappt (zB in der Fehde gegen Jericho, bei der RAW Old School Episode, etc... ). Wrestlerisch war er zwar nicht das Maß aller Dinge aber durchaus solide. Ich sehe ihn immer wieder gerne, ist ein guter Kerl!"
[8.0] "Verdammt guter Entertainer seiner Zeit(Natürlich heute auch noch). Im Ring leider nicht so versiert, was dem Gesamtpack eines perfekten Wrestlers fehlt. Piper's Pit ist jdoch absoluter Kult, jeder Wrestlingfan musst diese Show kennen. Für seine Mithilfe des Wrestling Entertaiments 8 Punkte."
[10.0] "Need to love him! Piper ist eine Legende whatsorever! Vom Unterhaltungswert wäre er heute noch top! Ich persönlich würde gern mehr Gastauftritte von ihm sehen!"
[9.0] "Zu jedem Superheld oder Nationalhelden gab es einen Rivalen. Hogans Gegenspieler Piper war einfach Klasse. Seine Aggressivität und Wutreden am Mic sind nicht zu vergessen."
[7.0] "Roddy Piper war in der WWE Gold wert, in der WCW eher der übertriebene Freak, klar es war sein Gimmick, aber trotzdem zu krass. Insgesamt bekommt er von mir 7 Punkte."
[8.0] "Sehr symphatischer Wrestler mit dem wahrscheinlich besten Mic Work der gesamten WWF. Umsonst hatte er nicht seine eigene legendäre Talkshow. Im Ring zwar etwas schwächelnd, doch das ändert nichts an der Tatsache, dass Piper einer der ganz großen Persöhnlichkeiten in diesem Sport ist."
[8.0] "Wild, ungestüm und unberchenbar. Seine Promos und sein exzellent ausgearbeiteter Charakter sind noch heute ein Highlight, wenn er sich mal wieder für einen Auftritt zur WWE verirrt. Für mich der furchtlose Schotte, mental unbezwingbar. Sein In Ring Leistungen liesen dafür oft zu wünschen übrig."
[10.0] "He was rowdy befor rowdy was cool! Ein Pillman oder ain Austin haben sich mehr als ein zwei dinge von ihm abgeschaut. Enorm einflussreich im wrestling bis heute, vergleichbar mit den stones in der rockmusik!"
[7.0] "Der Mann ist charismatisch und hat auch spannende Matches geliefert, aber für seine WCW-Comebacks in erschreckender Form gibts einen Punkt Abzug. Man sollte manchmal wirklich im Ruhestand bleiben."
[9.0] "Ein unvergleichlich charismatischer Mann! Und auch (leider) einer, der besser sein ganzes Leben Heel geblieben wäre - als Face hatte er sehr schnell an Biss verloren. Nichts desto trotz ein begnadeter Mic-Akrobat - sein Ausrasten incl. Kokusnuss gegen Snuka & der Business-prägende Satz "Just when they think... " sind legendär. Wollte man eine Halle angepisst sehen, musste man nur Piper samt Mic für ein paar Minuten in den Ring stellen... ABER: er war & ist nunmal leider "nur" ein Brawler (eigentlich eher Kneipenschläger! ), dessen wohl bestes Match gegen Bret Hart bei WM 8 statt fand. Ansonsten vor allem in den 80's ein Paradebeispiel des "harten Hundes"."
[4.0] "Micwork und Charisma ganz klar Note 1. Aber im Ring? Da sahen seine oft gezeigten Schlagsalven wirklich nach Kindergarten aus. Da hilft auch der Charakter nichts."
[8.0] "Roddy Roddy ... schwierig zu bewerten. Am Mic genial, vielleicht einer der Besten aller Zeiten. Zudem auch im Ring unheimlich hoher Unterhaltungswert; was ich über ihn schon lachen konnte. Seine Inring-Skills dagegen waren eigentlich den Platz nicht wert um sie zu beschreiben. Seine besten Fights hatte er gegen Gegner wie Hennig oder Hart - also Wrestler, die jeden gut aussehen lassen konnten. Trotzdem - ohne Piper würde dem Business etwas fehlen. 8 Punkte - aber mit Müh und Not."
[7.0] "Irgendwie ist es mit ihm, wie mit Kevin Nash: Es ist erstaunlich, wie viel er erreicht hat, obwohl er im Ring eigentlich ziemlich unterirdisch war. Dafür hatte er es umso besser drauf, sich selber stark zu reden, was ihm als Heel viel brachte und sicherlich dafür sorgte, dass Piper doch eine wesentliche Rolle spielen konnte. Allerdings hätte er spätestens ab 2000 dem Ring fern bleiben sollen...."

[7.0] "Er war ein guter Entertainer der 80iger/90iger, er war auch ein solider Wrestler und hatte genug Zuspruch vom Publikum. Aber er sollte aufhören, sein heutiges Programm nervt mich gewaltig."
[9.0] "Unterdurchschnittlich begabter Brawler, der immer von seiner Intensität und dem schier unendlichen Charisma gelebt hat. Einer der unterhaltsamsten Männer, die je in einem Ring standen und für mich der beste Micworker der 80er und frühen 90er Jahre."
[8.0] "Eine 1 gebe ich dem Hotrod nur nicht, weil sein Wrestling-Stil arg limitiert war. Technisch versiert war er absolut nicht - käme das hinzu wäre Piper eigentlich einer der besten Wrestler aller Zeiten. So bleibt ihm zu Gute, dass er über enorme Brawl-Skills verfügt wie kaum ein anderer, sehr starke Promos halten kann und mit seiner Ausstrahlung immer sehr das Publikum auf sich zog, egal ob als Heel oder als Face."
[8.0] "Im Ring unter-, am Mic überirdisch. Sympathisch war er auch immer und sein Gimmick passte einfach wie die Faust aufs Auge. Eigentlich ein 3, bekommt aber Zusatzpunkte für seine grandiosen Promos und dafür, dass er auch sehr gute Matches abgeliefert hat und maßgeblich daran beteiligt war, Hulk Hogan in den 80ern so aufzubauen und damit mitgeholfen hat, dass die WWE das geworden ist, was sie heute ist."
[2.0] "Einen Unterhaltungswert hat er ja. Aber er war und wird nie mein Fall. Im Ring war er einfach zu unspektakulär um in Erinnerung zu bleiben. Sein Micwork war aber ziemlich klasse."
[6.0] "Am MIC ist er der absolute Gott. Pipers Pit ist heute Legende. Ohne Piper kein Hogan, denn wie sagte Piper schon: Jeder Held braucht einen Schurken. Und im Falle von Hogan war das Piper. Seine In Ring Skills sind jedoch arg limitiert und dementsprechend ist er nie groß rausgekommen. Eigentlich schade."
[6.0] "Wrestlerisch nicht auffällig, den Brawler hat man ihm abgenommen. Am Mikro noch immer einer der besten und auch ein Beweis dafür dass Wrestler auch auf der Leinwand gute Schauspieler sein können. Unvergesslich für mich seine Catchphrase die auch im Film "Sie leben" genannt wurde. "I came here to kick ass and chew bubblegum. But I'm all out of bubblegum. ""
[8.0] "Einer der besten Entertainer im Business. Leute mit seiner Ausstrahlung und seinem Micwork tauchen alle 5 Jahre mal auf, in dieser Kombination leider noch viel seltener. Im Ring dafür leider ein ziemlicher Blindgänger, auf Brawls beschränkt (hier sein bestes gegen Valentine bei SC83), technisch gute Matches kann man an einer Hand abzählen (gegen Hart bei WM8), nicht mal ein wirklich guter Worker, wie es ein Hulk Hogan wenigstens noch ist."
[8.0] "Eine der kontroverstesten Persönlichkeiten des Business; im Ring maximal durchschnittlich, am Mikro ein Gott. Erwähnenswert sein Match mit Bret Hart um den IC-Titel!"
[8.0] "Ohne jede Frage ist Piper einer der besten am Mikrofon die es je gab. Die Fähigkeiten im Ring kommen nicht an sein Talent/Können am Mikro heran, aber das wäre auch kaum im Bereich des Möglichen gewesen."
[8.0] "Geniales MicWork, aber ist mir im Ring zu langweilig. Evtl. wirklich legendär, aber ich denke Mann wird im Wrestling zur Legende, wenn den Fans bei der Abwesenheit des Wrestlers etwas fehlt und ist das der Fall?"
[10.0] "Am Mic ein Gott und im Ring noch besser. Er hat eoN Charisma das mich einfach einnimt. Er weiss wie er zu handeln hat. Er würde sogar ausgebuht werden wenner es will und zwar jetzt. [8.0] "Früher gut und auch sehr erfrischend mit seiner lockeren, ausgeflippten, furchtlosen Art. Aber sorry, in den letzten Jahren nur noch nervig, zudem im Ring langsam und hüftsteif (wen wunderts! ). Immerhin reichte es in der WCW noch, um eine gut durchdachte Storyline anzufangen (Mit Flair gegen die Jungen, und die Betonung liegt auf "anzufangen")."
[8.0] "Am Mic brillant, im Ring kein überragender Worker. Jetzt könnte man eine 3 geben, aber er ist einfach zu witzig, zu authentisch und wenn er muss ein zu guter Heel, so dass es eine 2 wird."
[4.0] "Im Ring ist er eine Niete. Aufgrund seines guten Mic Works hätte er besser die Richtung Hollywood einschlagen sollen. Warum er in der HoF ist, versteh ich sowieso nicht? ! ?"
[10.0] "Im Ring muss man ihn gar nicht so ernst nehmen, denn Piper ist einfach Piper und lebte schon immer davon, einfach nur Kult zu sein! Am Mic absolut einmalig mit der besten Talkshow in der Geschichte des Wrestlings: dem Pipers Pit!"
[8.0] "Am Mic gab es IMO keinen Besseren als Hot Rod. Wenn er heute nochmal irgendwo auftritt, steht die Halle immer noch Kopf. Er ist eine sehr auffällige Persönlichkeit - im positiven Sinne. Wrestlerisch sicherlich kein Musterbeispiel, aber im Gesamtpaket eine wichtige und gerngesehene Figur der Wrestlinggeschichte."
