Having to watch matches on mute isn't a sign of a great heel, it's a sign of someone who doesn't know how to actually work as a manager. His promos suck too. If he never ended every sentence with daddy no one would remember it as anything positive. As a heel manager he can get heat without being a distraction from the match. Plenty of managers in the history of wrestling were good enough to not need props. Not even Jimmy Hart's megaphone was ever close to being as bad as the whistle. I don't think he contributed anything positive as a heel. I liked him better when he was a referee and I didn't know or care who he was."

[8.0] "There's an argument to be made that Bill Alfonso getting so much hate over that fucking whistle means he's an extremely effective heel manager. OK, sure, anyone can blow a whistle, but how many can cut a promo like Alfonso? How many other managers can bring as much energy to a match as him? How many of them are willing to get physical in the ring and ragdolled and bleed buckets? Yeah, he's an annoying screeching marmot with a whistle. That's the point. Like, I've been to an indie show where a manager did the whistle gimmick. It didn't work because he just fucking walked around the ring with an angry look on his face blowing the whistle continually regardless of what was happening in the match. It's weird to say, but there's nuance to it. Wrestling is just weird in general, I dunno. I'm not sure if there really is anyone who could make it work except Bill Alfonso. He was also a pretty good referee back in the day, and it's interesting to see him pop up in some really important and/or unique matches through the years. This man is pushing 70 and he's still bringing the same amount of energy today as he was 30 years ago. That's pretty cool."

Annoying in a "my ears are going to bleed" kind of way and "my sanity is seriously being tested" kind of way. Made nearly all of RVD's matches in ECW unwatchable with the audio on. So not only was he completely useless, he actively detracted from the product by his very presence with the STUPID WHISTLE."

[3.0] "His dedication to the role was undeniable, and his willingness to bleed buckets earned him unexpected respect. That match with Beulah was raw, shocking, and unforgettable, showcasing just how far he was willing to go to sell a story. Alfonso's greatest strength was his full-throttle commitment to the ECW aesthetic: loud, chaotic, and unapologetically intense. Still, there's no ignoring that the "annoying manager" gimmick, as effective as it was in spurts, could wear thin quickly. His shrieking presence often drew heat, but sometimes it bordered on distracting rather than compelling."

ZephsPancakes wrote on 03.05.2025:

Ruined almost every match he was ringside for because of that damn whistle, actively taking away and retracting from the action constantly. There's a reason he was never really seen again after ECW shut down, because he was just incredibly annoying and not good in the slightest whatsoever. His voice was grating, his promos weren't good, he just sounded like he was rambling about whatever come to mind and he didn't add anything to the people he managed."
TripleCrown wrote on 27.12.2024:

You would've thought a genius like Paul Heyman would see how stupid and awful this whole shtick was. There's a reason why WWE never brought him in when RVD jumped in the early 2000s and literally just made him stand there during ONS 05 & 06. Hasn't done anything relevant in wrestling since ECW, because again, his shtick was absolutely awful and there is literally no place for it in professional wrestling."

But he could change his behaviours which were the real kickers, the fucking whistle.... I won't watch any RVD matches from that era... you, Bill (and even more so Heyman) have robbed me of prime RVD. And his promo's were awful shouty, attention stealing bollocks. Also, he was a terrible ref, just watched a match were a wrestler has to yell at him too count because he shoot forgot....clown."

[8.0] "He made his name as referee, being the 3rd man in the ring, and calling it right down the middle for some historic bouts across CWF, WCW, and WWF/E. Some of the matches that come to mind are the infamous Bruiser Brody vs Lex Luger steel cage match from Florida, The Undertaker vs Giant Gonzalez at WrestleMania IX, and the Ric Flair/ Fujinami match from the WCW/NJPW crossover show at the tokyo dome. However, I honestly believe his staying power as far as the wrestling business goes came from his ECW work where he was the annoying, pipsqueak manager that everyone wanted to strangle every time he'd blow that whistle, or cut promos in that overly raspy voice that he had talking a mile a minute. I mean he's still out there now taking bookings because of that character work, you gotta hand it to the guy, or at least I do."

He had a lot of funny moments and managed a lot of the best guys in ecw. I think its funny that people still like to hate on fonzie because i think hes one of the funniest parts of ecw history"

I get the idea for it was probably to get heat, but making me not want to watch any match he's at ringside for is not heat it's just annoying. As a referee he wasnt too bad he was just there, which is exactly what you want from a referee but that doesn't make up for ruining most of RVDs ECW matches. Kind of ironic how Paul Heyman, one of the best managers in wrestling history, had the most annoying manager gimmick ever on his show."

Also, those teeth, Meth mouth full tilt. I'm glad he got those fixed! Seriously, have the mute button handy, you're going to want to cram that whistle through his face and you might break your tv, or pc. or phone or whatever."

For Paul Heyman being the creative genius he is, why did he ever think that would be a good gimmick? Annoying whistle aside, I did like how Alfonso would help RVD set-up his spots, always offering him a chair at the right moment."

Also what did he mean that he was gonna call it in the ring? ! He always said this as a manager, and I don't remember him ever being a guest referee."

I know they thought the whistle would be like Jimmy Hart's megaphone, but it was a thousand times more obnoxious. If I could go back in time & remove Bill Alfonso from every ECW match he was involved with, I would."

He did a very good job managing Sabu and Rob Van Dam and I really liked it when Sabu and RVD were opponents and Bill would be a manager for both of them. Overall I am going to rate him 7/10."
DanTalksRasslin wrote on 08.02.2016:
[7.0] "Alright daddy, the Man Who Calls It Right Down the Middle was a successful referee with stints in all three of the top promotions going back to 1979, then made the unlikely transition to manager in ECW when he was "stripped" of his refereeing duties and became best known for managing the "odd-couple" tag team of Rob Van Dam and Sabu, who were often as much at odds with each other as their opponents. With his semi-coherent promos and constant whistling, Fonzie may not have been a traditionally-great mic worker compared to other classic managers, but he was certainly a memorable and colorful part of ECW's motley band of characters in the mid-to-late '90s. Also was involved in an infamous and bloody match against Beulah McGillicutty in 1997."
