After being released from his WWE contract in late 2017, many were surprised by the news that New Japan Pro Wrestling would be bringing in the wrestler formerly known as Darren Young, Fred Rosser, in August 2020. Rosser earned himself a shot at the NJPW STRONG Openweight Title against champion "Filthy" Tom Lawlor in late 2021. Despite an impressive and memorable performance in which he proved that he did indeed belong in New Japan, Rosser came up short against Lawlor. Rosser worked his way up the ranks, and once again, challenged Lawlor for the STRONG Openweight Title in a match that aired on 25.06.2022. This time, Fred Rosser was victorious and he became the new NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion, ending Lawlor's one-year title reign in the process.
