Earl Hebner

[7.0] "Does an amazing job doing what a referee should do, which is be virtually undetectable in-ring. He's had a few various scuffles with heels over the years, but they tend to be subtle and never distract from the larger scenario of what surrounds. His character work is subtle & good."

[4.0] "I'm good on Earl. Mediocre referee was made to be involved in storylines and matches despite a complete inability to act (which isn't his fault, mind you). Always gave away what finishes were based on his posturing, which becomes too obvious to ignore once you've watched him referee enough matches. It seemed at times like he was actively trying to make himself the star of the show. I won't go lower than 4 as clearly fans were responsive and generally reacted strongly whenever he'd get comeuppance. But he's a referee, not a featured talent."

[4.0] "Nostalgia is keeping this rating from being lower. I agree with so many others here that he was terrible. The goofy selling of his ankle, the bad posture during a near fall or my most hated, the ultra slow 3 count. He was also a huckster selling bootleg merch from the trunk of his car. I'm sympathetic to him probably not getting paid enough but ask for a raise or go somewhere else or something."

[5.0] ""KNOCK IT AWFFFFF! " Iconic referee who in reality is an irritating presence in many of the matches he officiated, mostly because his inconsistent calls and lumbering around the ring distracted from the wrestling"

[3.0] "Awful. Terrible referee that actively detracts from matches, being with his inadequacy to sell moments or his inconsistent yet giving-away-the-finish counts. Adding to that his outside the ring antics. The only reason my rating of him isn't lower is because this is the lower I can go wihout having to write more characters than he deserves just to say 'Earl Hebner sucks'."

[3.0] "The most overrated ref of all time, if he wasn't ref during WWF's peak years people wouldn't rate him as high as they do. He was average at best, but I think he could be bad at times, and he's extremely inconsistent and thats why I'm giving him A 3."

[8.0] "Dave and Earl were THE best referee's of the late 80's-the early 2000's era. Bret Hart might disagree on Earl but eh.""

[4.0] "A bad "character referee". He was fine and forgettable whenever he wasn't trying to desperately get himself over by getting the better of all the heels by standing up to them and even physically pushing them around and cornering them. This would severely undercut the threat of the heels when such a scrawny and old non-athlete could bully and intimidate them like that. He also looked ridiculously goofy whenever he had to take bumps or be "distracted", though that was equally an issue with WWF/E booking as much as it was an issue specifically with Hebner himself. Definitely not a fan of this guy, though I won't go as far as to say he's the worst ref ever."

[0.0] "You could tell a ref bump was coming 30 seconds ahead of time by the way he moved or positioned himself, and he messed up a million near falls by doing this weird twitching movement he always did. Totally overrated and a dumbass to boot. People give him 10 points because he was the main ref during the WWF golden years. That's all."

[10.0] "A legendary referee ! How can you put a 0 ? Whether we like, we dislike, he's good ay. So that's a ten."

[0.0] "He might actually be the worst referee of all time. Ignoring Montreal, What he did only got himself over. He would always argue with the heels (as a refs do obviously) but whenever Triple H, or Test, or whoever blocked a sunset flip, instead of counting the dude going for the pin for a DQ, he'd kick the person blocking the pins arms for a big pop! Duspend that dude, A referee putting his hands on another competitor should be punished in some way but he always got away with it! Just to get himself over."

[10.0] "Earl Hebner is an absolute legend! He took so many bumps it? s crazy. I remember when he drank beer with Steve Austin or the shoving matches he got in with hhh or Vince chewing him out backstage. Wwe never over played it so when earl would do something it always made for good comedy."

[10.0] "Excellent referee. One of the best in WWE. Appeared in many main event matches. The Montreal Screwjob was a big one for him."

[7.0] "A bit overrated because of his notoriety (mostly gained from being involved in the Montreal Screwjob). That said, he still did other things to stand out during his run, which is not easy for a ref to lay claim to. His angle in TNA years later was atrocious & he seems too old to still do it. I'm interested to see how much AEW tries to use him going forward."

[10.0] "Earl is a once in a lifetime referee. Main event referee during the hottest period of wrestling ever. His willingness to fight back and signature spots with guys like Triple H pushing him back countless times or kicking Undertaker's arm off and opponent before receiving a stare down and quick sliding out of the ring live on forever as some of my favorite referee interactions ever."

[10.0] "Perhaps being part of the infamous Montre Screwjob I think Earl is definitely one of the best referees of al time."
