"mdkarl seems to be confusing Alexis Smirnoff with Boris Zhukov. He did the Russian gimmick in the AWA around the same time Zukhov did (1986), but the two never tagged together. Smirnoff tagged with Yuri Gordienko, and Zhukov tagged with Nicolai Volkoff after shaving his head. To make things more confusing, just as Volkoff tagged with the Iron Sheik, so did Smirnoff, when he was wrestling as Cecil DuBois in the 1970s. Most of Smirnoff's career isn't on CAGEMATCH because he wrestled so much in Quebec and Asia. His most important run was with IWE, the "third" Japanese promotion in the 1970s. He and Billy Graham were stablemates and top contenders to the main title, which Smirnoff won from Rusher Kimura in 1979. As a wrestler, he was BIG. He didn't have a Billy Graham body or anything. If anything, he was built like Killer Kowalski. His wrestling style fit with what IWE was doing, and yeah. He was great. I don't want to rate wrestlers, but he's one of the guys that shouldn't be forgotten. IWE was a lot more modern than AJPW and NJPW, with top foreign stars, cage matches, and brawlers like Smirnoff. For me as a fan, it's a lot more exciting. Billy Graham, Verne Gagne, Mad Dog Vachon, Mighty Inoue, and Strong Kobayashi are some of the stars that made it stand out. There's a lot of IWE footage available, too. I like the stuff from 1979 until it closed in 1981."

[3.0] "did the Russian gimmick whenever I saw him... but didn't do it very convincing. Being Russian was pretty much an instant heat magnet in the days of Koloff and Volkoff. I think Smirnoff probably got his biggest chance to shine in AWA but AWA was a dying promotion by that time. Almost no one was looking impressive on their limp tv show. When Smirnoff moved onto WWE he was basically cheap enhancement talent for some of their house shows. I cant remember him being on tv. The only time I ever found him to be watchable was his tag team with Boris Zurchov. As a jobber team... I thought they were ok. Never heard anyone ever mention this guy in any shoot interview... seems he was pretty much just one of those guys that filled a spot early in the card and had a shaved head so they figured he could pass as Russian."
