[8.0] "Medico Asesino was almost singlehandedly responsible for the resurrection of heavyweight wrestlers in Mexico: a huge man with an imposing physique, a very good in-ring wrestler (Rito Romero didn't complain about wrestling him so you know he must have been good) and incredible charisma, he was a huge hit just when pro-wrestling was starting to be heavily promoted on television in Mexico. When DF authorities cracked down hard on lucha libre in 1955 (sending dozens of promising stars into an early retirement), Medico moved north and became a huge star in Texas territories, especially Houston. He was always in the main or semi-main event there and usually billed ahead of other big draws like Gory Guerrero and Pepper Gomez: he was that huge and, much more critically, he was good. Unfortunately in 1958 he was diagnosed with cancer and, albeit he always expressed his firm belief he'd beat the disease, he lost that final match. His death was announced by media across Mexico like that of a huge movie star or famous politician and since Medico was universally well liked by all those who had worked with him, there was universal mourning in the lucha libre world. Even Santo, not known to be the sensitive type, was absolutely devastated. Another great one whose memory is disappearing as the old tapes disintegrate."
