Jay Lethal

[5.0] "Jay Lethal shouldn't even be in the company, honestly. He wasn't bad at his peak during 10s ROH era, but he clearly had a huge downgrade due for so many injuries. And now, not only he came into a point that he is washed, he is also so fucking useless for like, the entire roster. No one gets anything having a match with him."

[7.0] "He can be a serious, arrogant heel or a funny comedy act. In either case he's a very talented in ring performer and pretty decent on promos. He always seemed to be missing that one "it" factor that kept him out of big main events for bigger companies."

[3.0] "I was just watching some random old ROH stuff & this dude trotted out; my "meh" was pretty decisive, like wow, what a "meh" I emitted. He was always outclassed by people like Sonjay Dutt & Petey Williams in the in-ring department, easily outclassed by Shark Boy in the physique department, & his character as a kind of RC Cola to Macho Man's Coca-Cola (some 3 years after Macho's retirement) was all that was needed to get the attention of Ric Flair to the chagrin of what I'm sure were tons and tons of talented upcoming workers who would find themselves assigned to Xplosions & never given the opportunity to florish in TNA simply by looking good, connecting shit well, & cutting promos in ways that made sense. Even when Lethal was used, it was tradition for him to be used in tags & multi-man matches, and it's easy to see why; he had a terrible physique, never laid his shit in (again, we're talking barely connecting at times), & just had a way of cartoonishly tumbling around & not really even wrestling. He epitomizes the kind of person that I would say something like "he's fine in tags" about, even though I can't be arsed to remember a single tag match (or match, period) that he's ever had, just to begrudgingly legitimize an obvious core competence & move on to the next topic. For what little he brings to the table he really is the like the most overrated main scene player in the history of the known universe. I can think of like 5 people off the top of my head rated piss-poor on here I'd rather watch than Jay Lethal."

[8.0] "Jay Lethal is the total package! A solid in-ring worker who can go the extra mile and has shown it! Personality & Promo work is there even back to his Black Machismo and can do well as a heel if needs to be. He's a ROH Legend & notable Impact star who's catalog elsewhere give him that boost! Recently, he's fallen into the shuffle and can easily be brought up in a solid upper mid carder and can work any style & put on some classic matches! Definitely an underrated talent who's on a whole other level!"

[8.0] "He's had entertaining promos, is very very underrated in the ring seeing as he's a genuinely great worker, but been on TV for such a long time and been so over-exposed that he's not likely to ever be taken seriously as a main eventer again. But Jay Lethal has had some awesome matches and done some great work over such a long time, he's gone from underrated to overrated and back to underrated. He's had a super solid career in a variety of companies and in a variety of countries, and has some pretty great natural charisma as well."

[6.0] "Jay Lethal has a very solid career, he managed to be an important guy in very important companies and it's a reliable worker. The guy is very technical and work matches pretty well."

[8.0] "Ranking someone low because they haven't held the most prestigious titles or haven't been pushed recently doesn't strike me as fair as these are booking/political decisions. Jay elevates talent in AEW by continuing to put on great matches, showing character and charisma. His current role isn't glorious, but along with some of his peers in AEW around the same age, taking a backseat to elevate other talent after shining in ROH, TNA. Guys like this are keeping AEW from being WCW where the talented, but older vets never did business, aging everyone including their shrinking audience. This guy can be supremely entertaining on his own or a wonderful compliment further down the card. Jay and his peers make the product better without putting their egos first, making AEW a stronger (though still very flawed) company."

[7.0] "This rating is because of how he has been booked on aew. He was one of the best wrestlers in roh history and the world years ago. don't fully understand what happened. He is a non factor atm hope things change"

[6.0] "Satisfactory sounds about right. I haven't seen a lot of him outside aew. Seen some old black machismo TNA stuff which is real fun. But I'm a big macho man fan so maybe biased? Find him amusing on the odd bte appearance. But his in ring work at the moment doesn't seem to click that much. It's fine. Looking back over this review it seems I like his impressions of macho man"

[7.0] "I have always been pretty consistently entertained by Jay Lethal although I did not watch huge amounts of his later run in ROH which seems to have soured people. He was fun in TNA . I like his stuff in TNA and he is at his best on the lower mid card."

[4.0] "I genuinely used to be a fan of Jay Lethal; however, now, it seems as though that I am in the middle end of curiosity as to *what* Jay Lethal even is. In his current run (as of writing) in All Elite Wrestling, he has shown to be a workhorse but never the unicorn; he has consistently proven to be a very lackluster worker in his age in contrast to his abilities in yesteryears. His backstage reception isn't exactly that clean; he has proven to be a jerk and a thorn in the ass of many that do come to work with Jay Lethal. Maybe if he didn't allegedly do what he did to Taeler Hendrix and Kelly Klein, maybe I'd still have him in good regards to today; however, it just seems to be that he is very much a come-and-go shining star that will fade to time. Do better, pervert."

[7.0] "Lethal is a talented wrestler who know how to do everything well. He can go in the ring, and he can play a gimmick and get it over on the mic. He has been around forever with good runs in AEW, ROH, NJPW and TNA. His matches are usually very good because he is good technically and mentally."

[0.0] "So obviously my thoughts on him might be skewed by his actions outside the ring cause he's an awful bastard but also in ring he's so boring. Like he is functional he does no moves unsafely but what an utterly uninteresting worker. No vibe, no intensity, so little to make him worth anything just a dumb little dork who also happens to suck as a person"

[6.0] "A very good worker, understands how to structure and pace a proper wrestling match. Not a great look but has talent on the mic. Solid output for many years now, a valuable asset."

[8.0] "GREAT worker, average wrestler. It's your typical mid-card guy who can make all the basic moves, but that is not an impediment to show that he knows how to put on a good show."

[8.0] "One of the better in ring workers to debut in the 21st century. He's got the charisma under the right gimmick, he can hold his own in bouts against Gresham and Orange Cassidy, and he even made Jeff Jarrett and Ric Flair look presentable in a fifty year career for them. And its hard to go without mentioning Black Machismo in TNA, that was great, a rip off Macho Man who could live up to the hype of the real one. Thanks Jay, your still great."

[8.0] "In his AEW run, he is basically "the guy who can wrestle" in Jeff Jarrett's merry band of misfits, basically the straight man of the bunch. His overall personality is fairly bland, but it works in his role."

[6.0] "I think Jay Lethal is a guy that I respect more than I enjoy watching. He's good, but he's not so good that he leaves me wanting more. And his charisma is pretty much restricted to a bang-on imitation of the Macho Man. He's a good hand, but I can't help but think that he worked better as a big fish in a small pond that was ROH than he does in a larger promotion."

[10.0] "Very few people possess the talent that this man has. A great in ring performer. Can get an acceptable match out of anyone they put him in there with. Very charismatic. Extremely entertaining -- his imitations of Flair and Savage was some of the best stuff on any programming there for a while. Tremendous promo as well, with a wide range in promo style. He can be serious, he can be comedic, he can be sympathetic, etc. He is/was a great speaker for media outside of the company. I remember watching some of his media appearances outside of ROH/TNA and he delivered there too."

[8.0] "A lot of charisma, a ton of talent and very underrated. From his time in TNA, ROH or AEW, Lethal has always made it a mission in life to have great matches."

[7.0] "Good ole' Jay Lethal! One of the first wrestlers I've seen on live TV back in 2009 and 2010 on IMPACT! when it was Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Solid on the mic and also as a high flyer that I'm still so excited to watch today. Excited to see some of his more recent NJPW matches."

[9.0] "Lethal has way too low of a rating on here, and I think that it is because his defining run came at a time when ROH had lost steam and wasn't being watched by as many of people. His year-plus long run as Double ROH Champ is one of the best title reigns in all of ROH history, he was consistently putting out amazing matches with everyone, and his only weakness, which is on the mic, was completely negated with his manager Truth Martini by his side. Everywhere else Lethal has gone, he has always put on great matches, but has been underused (like in TNA or currently AEW). Even the few times TNA gave Lethal a chance, like in the X Division, Tag Division, or the only thing most people seem to know him for, against Ric Flair, he knocked it out of the park. It's unfortunate that other than ROH, no other company can see that Lethal is pure gold. Honestly, his only drawback is on the mic when he's serious, he's great when he's parodying Macho Man or Flair, but when he is serious he does need a manager."

[7.0] "Jay Lethal held down ROH for quite a while. He was a good champ for them. He's a well rounded performer. He has been serious and comedic in his career and remained effective. He cuts good promos and is very good in the ring. I really enjoy his moveset. The Ric Flair impersonation segment is historic for wrestling."

[7.0] "Solid workhorse and has consistently improved on the mic and in the ring since his very early TNA years. Lethal would have been perfect in today's NXT in his prime, sadly that was wasted spending years in comedy gimmicks and low card matches. His ROH work is a lot better, but it's a bit too little, too late at this point. He puts on solid matches as a big fish in a small pond, but hasn't had a truly career defining feud outside of fighting a 50+ Ric Flair in a comedy match. (update 2021) now that Lethal has been put in a far bigger pond, he thus far has done nothing of note, only appearing for a middling title challenge that wasn't bad, but wasn't anything to stand out either, being swallowed up by Guevara's own injury storyline in his big breakout match yet still losing. Time will tell if he goes anywhere beyond the occasional big match, but given his pretty bare-bones nature, it's hard to tell."

[9.0] "Jay Lethal is a star. He has so much charisma and can put on a great match with just about anybody. One of the most consistently solid workers ROH has had since 2015."

[5.0] "Ugh, I never liked this guy. Always tried way too hard with his Macho Man character and it cringy as hell, and then he went to having no character and that was somehow still worse. His in-ring skills are overrated and he's usually the most boring performer in a match. I just don't find anything interesting about him and AEW is just picking up someone even TNA didn't want anything to do with."

[4.0] "Dreadfully boring, there's a reason he's never ventured far from the ROH bubble. His best work came when he was mocking Macho Man and Flair on TNA, he could never do anything on his own character wise."

[9.0] "Entertaining wrestler. Former multi time Ring of Honor Champion and maybe the biggest star in their history. His "Lethal Injection" finisher is great and I liked when he was paired with Truth Martini as his manager. He us a great technical wrestler. He was also a star in TNA for a while. Did a spoof of "Macho Man" Randy Savage as "Black Machismo" and had some hilarious exchanges with Ric Flair, Whooping back and forth as he did a great imitation of Flair."

[10.0] "Lethal is the real deal and I can? t remember a time he had a bad match. His 60 minute match with Matt Taven is one of my favorite match of all time."

[8.0] "Jay Lethal is a very consistent wrestler, he has been the MVP of ROH for years, even though he is not so flashy, his matches hardly reached the MOTYC standard, but they are almost always very good."

[5.0] "Ever since his early days in TNA, I've never been all too into Jay Lethal. I know he has seen a lot of praise, especially since he's been the man in ROH, but every time I go out of my way to check out one of his ROH matches I'm just not overly impressed. I hated the Black Machismo gimmick & to this day I'll never understand why people were so fond of it. I'm also not sold on the Lethal Injection finisher & I don't think it seems convincing."

[8.0] "Jay Lethal has been the low-key MVP of Ring of Honor for the past three years. While the fans gravitated more towards The Elite/Bullet Club, it was Lethal who typically had the best matches on each show. He doesn't do anything too flashy, but everything he does is fundamentally sound, and he has the remarkable ability of making his opponents look good (see his matches with Lio Rush and Jonathan Gresham where both guys came out of it looking like top-level stars. ) In some ways, he reminds me of Roderick Strong in the sense that he often goes unappreciated, but he's so consistently good that you can't even remember the last time he had a bad match."

I'm a huge fan, and his name will go down as among the best in Ring of Honor history"

Hes one of those guys that WWE marks love to hate until he signs with "their" company. Idiots. Hes starting to have big matches in NJPW like his recent against Naito and really carving a name for himself in wrestling history, hopefully if he does end up in WWE they dont misuse him like they do most of the guys in the company."
