Infact most of his best matches were before his weight loss. Let me be completely honest here I am not s big fan of Gunther while Walter was rated 10 at many points beforehand"

[10.0] "Gunther is the best pro wrestler of modern times. I've followed him for years, and the thing I admire most about him is his ability to have a good match with virtually anyone. Especially during his WALTER run, he dominated the independent scene for years and consistently stayed at the top of his performance level with one great match and performance after another. His WWE career, meanwhile, has provided some of the most watchable things in the rather dull modern pro-wrestling landscape of recent years. His Intercontinental Championship reign was not only the longest in history, but also arguably the best in terms of match quality. The style Gunther brought to WWE is completely unique - it's neither NJPW's strong style nor exactly the Kobashi-style approach. It's entirely his own - brutal and unforgiving. Some people criticize him for having a limited move set, but what truly makes him terrifying is the viciousness of his offense - the attacks that seem to rip the lungs out of his opponents, especially his devastating chops. Gunther is a true master at creating an underdog story or presenting himself as an unstoppable beast. He can work with any type of psychology, and creating and telling stories in the ring comes naturally to him. His recent "Career-Killer" run has given him so much momentum that he has already written his name among the greats. He's the man who made John Cena submit, retired AJ Styles, and destroyed Goldberg in his final match - and now he's waiting for new prey to eliminate. He's also incredible as a heel. His ability to generate heat and make the audience genuinely hate him is something very rare today - moments like shouting "Hala Madrid! " in Barcelona are perfect examples. Amazingly brutal offense, longevity, great selling, strong storytelling, and true Goliath-level performances. Gunther is already one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time."

He doesn't light the world on fire with promos, but he's good enough and as a character he feels like a final boss to overcome. He has a presence that give his matches that big fight feel that alot of guys and girls don't and will never have. All in all I love watching him work and feel he would've worked in any era."

[7.0] "Ok I was a little harsh on Gunther in my initial review. He definitely doesn't deserve the 9.61 rating he has but he's still good. His match quality is great overall. He's one dude who has high quality matches consistently. His move set isn't really anything special over all as most of his matches just consist of chops and powerbombs. However he somehow always has great matches and he deserves credit for that. He has had bad matches. Like I thought his match with Jey was pretty awful but it's Jey uso you need to be a god to carry that nepobaby to a good match. I also thought his match with CM Punk at Summerslam was atrocious but again no one is perfect and we have slip ups. However Gunther really isn't the best in the other categories. He's not the best on the mic, he's not a great character, he has little charisma, he can't tell engaging stories and he has zero aura. I was in attendance for Summerslam 2025 for both days and there were over 100k different people I saw. I'm not joking when I say this but I saw ZERO people wearing Gunther merch and I heard ZERO people even bring up Gunther. That's REALLY BAD considering you are the night one main event of the second biggest show of the year. He also retired two of the best ever and he has zero heel heat on him. He has zero aura and no one in the real life crowd cares about this guy. In my opinion you need more than consistent great matches for me to rank you high. Unfortunately Gunther just doesn't have those other things."

His work speaks for itself. The man isn't an entertainer. He's a wrestler. Yet he makes sure that his wrestling is always entertaining. Everything he does makes sense. There's a reason for it. Perfect in ring psychology. There is no weakness to his game. He'll be an all time great by the time it's all said and done."

His matches are great, and I loved it when he had no definite finisher. Powerbomb, Lariat, Sleeper, Splash, even a chop? He can make any finisher look credible. He also makes it look like he's genuinely killing his opponents! His promos are also great to listen to as well!"

He already stands out with his classic, old-school wrestling style, but since adopting his "Career Killer" character, he's been fantastic, he has an great aura and comes across like WWE's hitman. His only flaw is that some of his promos can be repetitive, but other than that, he's flawless."

[10.0] "The very definition of a pro wrestler. Everything Gunther does is so well calculated for a wrestling and story telling that it's almost scary how well everything is executed (except maybe his Splash). His promos aren't the greatest, but they're still pretty well done and he's able to generate emotions from the crowd and he still has some entertaining charisma to him (mock AJ styles entrance). This guy can get a good match of just about anyone, even a 50+ year old Goldberg suffering from multiple ligament injuries. His moves aren't flashy but he plays the role of a powerful and world class wrestling heel. The only wrestler to ever get me to cry (John cenas final match). 10/10"
thefool wrote on 17.02.2026:
[10.0] "Professional wrestling has always had a place for the enforcer, the mountain of a man who serves as an immovable object in the ring. Over the years characters like Bruiser Brody, Vader, and Stan Hansen carved out legacies built on legitimate toughness and an aura of danger that transcended the worked nature of the business. These were men who didn't need elaborate gimmicks because their presence alone was enough to make audiences believe someone was about to get hurt. In an era where wrestling has become increasingly reliant on scripted promos, overproduced entrances, and performers who look more like fitness models than fighters, the question becomes whether there's still room for that kind of old school brutality. Gunther answered that question by chopping people so hard that audiences wince. The Austrian (formerly WALTER on the independent scene and NXT UK) has built his persona around a simple concept: he is a wrestler who wrestles, and if you step into the ring with him, you're going to suffer for it. There's no elaborate backstory about childhood trauma or supernatural powers. He's a 6'4" mountain who treats professional wrestling like a legitimate sport, and his matches reflect that mentality with an intensity that's become increasingly rare in modern WWE. The character work is rooted entirely in his in-ring performance rather than backstage segments or lengthy promos. He doesn't need to tell you he's dominant because every match demonstrates it. His moveset is built around strikes that look and sound devastating, holds that appear genuinely painful, and a methodical pace that suggests he's not just winning matches but punishing opponents for daring to challenge him. The approach is refreshingly straightforward in an industry obsessed with "sports entertainment" over actual wrestling. When it comes to presentation, Gunther has clearly been influenced by old school European wrestling, particularly the hard-hitting style that defined his work in wXw before WWE. The gear is simple, almost utilitarian. The entrance is no-nonsense. There are no pyrotechnics or elaborate light shows, just a man walking to the ring with the confidence of someone who knows he's going to hurt you. One thing worth noting is that Gunther's physique has changed since his WALTER days on the independents. The leaner look suits WWE's presentation standards, but there's something to be said for the more imposing presence he had when he carried more weight. That version felt even more like an immovable force, a throwback to when wrestlers didn't need to be shredded to be threatening. The in-ring work is where Gunther truly excels. His chops have become legendary not because they're worked differently, but because he delivers them with such force that the sound echoes through arenas and leaves welts on opponents' chests. Watch any Gunther match and you'll see wrestlers legitimately bracing themselves before taking his strikes. The selling isn't exaggerated for dramatic effect, it's a natural response to actually being hit that hard. Beyond the strikes, Gunther works with a deliberate pace that harks back to territory era wrestling. He doesn't rush through sequences or rely on constant high spots. Instead he builds matches methodically, breaking down opponents systematically while maintaining complete control. This old school approach does come with limitations. Viewers who prefer faster paced matches may find Gunther's style too slow. The lack of elaborate character work beyond "I'm better than you" can seem one-dimensional. That said, these aren't flaws so much as conscious choices. Gunther isn't trying to be everything to everyone. He's presenting a specific style of wrestling that's been largely abandoned by mainstream promotions, and committing to it completely. What truly sets Gunther apart is his commitment to being a pure heel. In an era where every villain seems desperate for cheers or cool points, Gunther has never once pandered to the audience. He's not looking for respect, he's not winking at fans who appreciate his work, and he's certainly not interested in being anyone's favorite. His entire purpose is to be the final boss that the right babyface overcomes at the right time. His Intercontinental Championship reign demonstrated this perfectly. Rather than the typical WWE approach of having champions appear vulnerable, Gunther dominated his division for over 600 days. He made the championship feel important again simply by treating it as important. Challengers weren't presented as equals who happened to lose, they were presented as people who weren't good enough to take the title from him. When he finally lost the Heavyweight title, it should have been to someone who had earned that moment. The decision to have Jey Uso end the reign was one of those creative missteps that occasionally plague even the best characters. Gunther's reign deserved a conclusion that meant something, that elevated the right person at the right time. Instead we got a feel-good moment that served the wrong story. For fans who remember when wrestling felt more legitimate, Gunther is a breath of fresh air. For fans who appreciate strong style or European wrestling, his work is a masterclass. The commitment to old school heel work, the legitimately stiff striking, and the complete refusal to seek audience approval all combine to create something authentic in an increasingly artificial product. Gunther isn't trying to reinvent wrestling or push boundaries in terms of character work. He's simply executing a time-tested formula with such conviction that it feels fresh again. In an industry that constantly chases trends, there's something refreshing about a performer who knows exactly what he is and refuses to compromise. He exists to put over the right babyface at the right time, and when that actually happens, it's wrestling storytelling at its finest."

I absolutely love his heel work and how he transforms hatred into positive energy. His facial expressions, his flawless basic wrestling--thanks to which he delivers one masterwork after another. I'm so ashamed that I didn't like him earlier. And it's such a paradox that I liked him right after the match with John Cena, and it changed my whole perspective on wrestling in general. And because of that, I get to enjoy it even more. Thank you, Gunther or WALTER, whoever you are, but your matches with Sheamus, Ilya Dragunov, Sami Zayn, Drew McIntyre, John Cena, AJ Styles, LA Knight, Je'Von Evans--those are true works of art, deserving of a detailed analysis."

Super enjoyable on mic, plays his dickish heel role to perfection, & always, always makes the rare person that defeats him look like a million bucks in defeat (with the exception of Uso, but Uso is Uso). I struggle to picture anybody in the past numerous years that serves as a better " final boss" -type figure for his co-workers to have excellent matches with. His match with Je'von was a freakin' barnburner. Among the best wrestlers of the modern age, that sleeper submission is the shit!"

He's not a guy who is compelling enough to be a top heel and making him a "legend killer" doesn't up his ante, it just sours the casual fanbase on him more. He'd have a lot more stock as a gatekeeper type, like he was with the Intercontinental championship, especially when a guy like Oba Femi comes along who is much more intense than Gunther as a character, looks much more imposing, and has a far higher ceiling than Gunther could reasonably achieve. As I said, phenomenal wrestler, top five in the world, but the overpushing is quickly approaching Roman Reigns levels."
[10.0] "The fact that he doesn't care about his merch sales and whatever other "entertainment" stuff you need to be good in WWE is what makes him so good. He's not your typical WWE wrestler. He doesn't care about entertaining the fans. He's there to whoop everyone's ass and that will always work if you're one of the best bell to bell wrestlers in the world which is what Gunther is."

The way he is able to instantly have chemistry and get a 3-star minimum out of anyone is not talked about enough as I genuinly think he can have a good match with a piece of paper. The best knife-edge chop in the business is just one of his signatures, as one of the key things with Gunther is he doesn't have a finisher, and the match simply ends when his opponent has had enough as he is one of the hardest hitters in the game. He has finished opponents with the powerbomb, frog splash, big boot, lariat, sleeper, and Last Symphony, and I could go on as the guy is a powerhouse, striker and technician. Gunther generally has more finishers in his arsenal than the other wrestlers' total moveset. His character is a serious, no-shit German who simply thinks the mat is sacred and all this fancy sports entertainment is just bullshit. From Imperium up until now, he has made so many accomplishments. Being the longest-reigning NXT UK Champion and the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion and former World Heavyweight Champion are just some of the milestones he has achieved so far, and more is yet to come for sure."

[8.0] "8/10. From 2024 to 2025, Gunther's performances have been somewhat disappointing to me. I believe he is an excellent brawler--his strikes are visually impactful and memorable, often pulling me into his matches with their raw intensity. His chops, lariats, big boots, German suplexes, splashes... none are overly flashy, yet every move screams, "I'm here to destroy you, " making his style feel brutally authentic. Simple yet effective, he doesn't need elaborate maneuvers to make a match compelling. He excels at playing that dominant force, weaving gripping narratives through physicality alone. However, since losing the Intercontinental Championship, the quality of Gunther's in-ring work has noticeably dipped. Perhaps due to facing high-profile opponents, his strikes seem restrained--toned down in a way that dulls his edge. Even so, he's delivered countless standout matches. Before this dip, I'd have rated him a solid 9/10, maybe even a perfect 10. 8.5/10.From 2025.11 to 2025.12, Gunther delivered consistently high-quality matches at an exceptionally stable level. While his opponents' outstanding performances certainly contributed, his own work remains nothing short of astonishing. So far, in The Last Time Is Now Tournament, he has produced three consecutive matches rated 8.19, with WON awarding them three straight 4.25-star ratings--that's absolutely insane.Based purely on match quality alone, there's no question that Gunther is more than worthy of being John Cena's final opponent."

He brings a hard-hitting, no-nonsense style that feels like a throwback to old-school bruisers but with the technical precision of a modern-day maestro. His matches are clinics in physical storytelling--brutal, methodical, and impactful. Whether in NXT UK or on the main roster, he's elevated every opponent and made the Intercontinental Championship feel prestigious again. The "Ring General" nickname isn't just a gimmick--it's earned."

He looks like a monster that could destroy everyone, his promo skills improved so much throughout the years, he's a perfect heel, the Ring General character works super well, He's charismatic and his matches feel REAL. They don't look choreographed, and they have a perfect psychology. He has three matches in my top 5 of the last ten years, his Classic with Bate and his phenomenal matches against Dragunov. He's the guy for me right now."

[10.0] "It's rare to evaluate a wrestler mid-career and already feel confident calling them one of the greatest, but with GUNTHER, that's exactly the case. Despite some questionable booking choices in recent WWE storylines, his body of work speaks volumes, and his legacy continues to build. GUNTHER's character work is impeccable. He's one of the most believable heels in modern wrestling--an imposing, disciplined force who feels like a legitimate threat every time he steps into the ring. His long title reigns never feel forced or manufactured; they're earned through the aura he brings, the credibility he's established, and the consistency he's maintained since his early days on the independent scene. In-ring, he's nearly flawless. A technically sound powerhouse, GUNTHER has that rare ability to dominate opponents while still elevating them. He controls the pace, makes every move count, and tells intricate stories through physicality alone. His ring psychology is elite--his matches feel cinematic, layered with emotion, intensity, and meaning. You could skip the promos entirely and still grasp the full narrative just by watching him wrestle. Whether he's main-eventing or elevating midcard titles, GUNTHER embodies what professional wrestling can be at its highest level. If his career continues along this path, he's not just on track to be a great--he's on track to be one of the greatest of all time."

Loved is IC title run and I liked his World Championship run. I hoping to see him dominate more after his loss to Jey in his WrestleMania 41 match (10/10)"

Looking foward to watching him get back to being dominant after the Jey Uso loss."
