[8.0] "Dick Vrij was perhaps the pioneer of Dutch kickboxing in the Puroresu/MMA/NHB scene. He looked like a cyborg out of a Terminator movie with his physique and ice-cold approach in the ring. He first made his appearance in UWF Newborn, arriving with fellow Dutchman Chris Dolman in the later years of the promotion. He didn't have blow-away matches, but his presence and hard kicks quickly won over fans. After the collapse of UWF, Dolman and Vrij followed Akira Maeda to his new RINGS promotion where they helped establish a barebones roster and led the way for more European foreigners to join the promotion, including several from Holland. If it wasn't for Dick Vrij, we may have never seen the likes of the Overeem brothers, GIlbert Yvel, Hans Nijman, etc in Japan. Dick Vrij had some great matches in RINGS, including a heated rivalry with Volk Han, and often meshed well with other highly skilled grapplers like Kohsaka, Yamamoto, and Tamura. Certainly, one of the best foreigners to ever grace Japan and someone who had an underrated influence on the Dutch presence in the golden years of Kakutogi."
