619.10.2024Ruthless Attitude7.0I'm not used to seeing Jushin Thunder Liger wrestle heel, but he's really good with that in this match. He still gets the big high risk spots in there, but the arrogance in his cover when he lands a brainbuster was a nice touch. Given the talent here, it's not surprising everything looked so crisp and technically sound match with a good mix of techincal wrestling and high flying. Benoit had the match won, but the finish wasn't great as Sullivan distracted Benoit at ringside which lead to Liger landing a hurricanrane, which didn't look as good as everything else in the match.

814.10.2024JacquesRougeauCanHaveMyWife7.0A very good match to open the show with a really hot crowd. The dynamic was interesting, because heel Benoit was getting cheered, so they adapted to that scenario pretty well in the middle of the match with Jushin becoming more arrogant with every minute. The work was obviously very good as both guys' stuff looked as flawless as it could possibly get and they paced it very well. A really fun and fast opener.

1926.05.2024Mizzle Assault Ant9.0Can't fathom the low rating here, I thought this was fantastic. Is is just because of the finish? Wasn't that bad, the old distraction trope is a bit tired but holy hell, most of this match is awesome. Crisp, phenomenal bombs these two throw at each other, and they even inject a bit of personality as Liger heels it up a bit and Benoit takes bigger risks to try to take him down. This was a great one in my book.

3128.08.2023MattEdererSNMERadio It's reviews like arrancar's on this site that remind me just how massively arrogant and out of touch wrestling fans can be. The amount of vitriolic hate that pro westlers, these human beings who are risking their lives for our entertainment, incurr is not just shocking, but truly disgusting. A very good professional wrestling match between two excellent wrestlers. They had much better ones though, so this match falls through the cracks. General note to wrestling fans: hey not sure if you remember how Benoit's life ended, but let's hate him for that. Leaving a SCATHING REVIEW on a Chris Benoit match about Benoit's opponent is legitimately one of the funniest things a human being can do lol. Hay zeus friends what are we doing here. Let's maybe hate the murderer? Let's not hate Jyushin Liger because you personally disliked his ouevre

4226.05.2022Giantfan19806.0The first match in the world cup tournament. Great opening match. Both guys countering whatever they can throw at each other. Liger goes up top and gets caught by Benoit in a superplex. Benoit misses the diving headbutt and Liger hits a sit down power bomb for 2. Liger hits a brain buster but an arrogant cover lets Benoit escape. Benoit catches Liger with a double german suplex. Kevin Sullivan comes to ringside to start shit with Benoit because of the recent trouble Pillman caused by mouthing off to the DOD. Sullivan distracts Benoit and Liger gets the pin.
4314.04.2022arrancar6.0It's performances like this that remind me just how massively underwhelming and overrated Liger was. Benoit looked like an absolute pro here, whereas Liger often looked pretty amateurish and was easily overshadowed in every single department. Liger's movements were pretty unflashy, with his form resembling a flying bag of potatoes every time he took to the air or attempted any sort of 'agile' movement. He hit a few decent traditional lucha spots, but then he'd also do some junior that absolutely didn't suit his body type (like that lame feint-dive handstand into the ropes), resulting in him looking pretty dorky. His heel work was pretty forced as well, though that could just be because WCW told him to ham up his performance here as the 'evil' invader. His best moments really were bumping for all of Benoit's massive power moves. Benoit was good all around, with strong technical work, really good impact in all his attacks (especially his blasting power moves), and great natural aggression that made him come off like a total fighter. They showed solid chemistry as they began quickly trading and countering moves back and forth, but none of their exchanges or spots were too creative or especially spectacular. So what does WCW do to end this good match? Why, it's an outside interference distraction of course! Taskmaster diverted Benoit's attention, setting Benout up to eat Liger's really janky hurricanrana (another example of the "great" Liger's offence lmao). Tell any WCW fans here that Liger was, or would become, considered one of the greatest wrestlers ever and they'd have a laughing fit. Benoit made this match as good as it was, but he didn't get anything near an equal effort from Liger to raise this it higher. ***1/4
4424.12.2021Derek Joists8.0Benoit had plenty of experience wresttling in Japan prior to this, and Liger is a legitimate contender for greatest wrestler in history. Unfortunately this is a short match with a screwy finish, but despite that it's a great match. There's a mix of hard hitting offence, technical skill, and a variety of well executed suplexes, and it's just a shame they didn't get longer.

4928.07.2021Iceq6.0Solider Start in die Show.

5220.05.2021AmarantCoral7.0Decent match, technically sound as advertised, for the most part anyway. A shaky superplex and a sloppy hurricanrana for the finish were the only notable weak points form a move execution perspective. However it never hit that next gear you would have expected from these two and the finish was awful, with Dungeon of Doom continuing to be the worst thing about WCW.

6624.11.2018RatingsMachine6.0This was a good match with a bad finish. These two are capable of so much better. The commentary really hurt this match, something that would be a running theme for the rest of the night. Tony Schiavone tried his best on commentary; it seemed like he really wanted to get the wrestlers and the match over. But Bobby Heenan was intent on doing his routine, and Dusty Rhodes, like always, was intent on getting himself at the expense of everything else.
6703.11.2018Makai Club 7.0Pretty good back and forth match, it had potential to be much better higher up on the card but as an opener, this was good as it could've been. Didn't mind the ending either. ***1/2

7916.01.2017jackleone7.0Really good match until the final minute, where the run-in of Taskmaster/Sullivan causes an ending out of nowhere with Liger cheating his way to win. Anyway it's not at the top of their skills, just a good 10 minutes fight. ***1/2

8426.07.2016TAWPTierJustin8.0I'm really surprised that this match with Chris Benoit and Jushin Thunder Liger at Starrcade 1995 was ranked lower than I expected. Sure the finish wasn't good cause Kevin Sullivan came out, Benoit had Liger right where he wanted him but Benoit let himself get distracted by Sullivan on the apron and by the time Benoit turned back around, he lost via hurricanrana pin from Liger which was pretty miscommunicated and didn't look very good, but before that, we had real good back and forth action for the most part by both Liger and Benoit. Overall it was a really good way to start off Starrcade 95.
