This was, as Matt said in the end, too much and too far. If I got a nickel for every plot hole here, I would have enough money to start my own promotion. Why was Bowens the one to go through the tables if he had already escaped from the tables? Why did it take so long for Swerve to be freed? etc. Speaking of Swerve, some spots with him were very tasteless (not going into details there, but if such spot happened anywhere else, there would be a lot of cancellations).On the other note, his moments with Page were the highlights of this match, great intensity there. There was a lot of phony, over the top violence, this could be just an average critic of hardcore wrestling. It's worth watching only for Page/Swerve interactions, but that's it. * |

Whether its big multi mans, anarchy in the arenas, stadium stampedes, blood & gutses, deaths door, etc, they rarely fail to deliver. This was a big blind spot for me. The lackluster build to this felt like a mandatory box check annual match with the heel Elite manufacturing this match just because it was "about that time." Plus, the Acclaimed were up in here. In the year of our lord 2024. Little did I know that they were barely involved to the match's benefit. Bowens had a good showing with that big table bump and his entrance functioning as a fiery hot tag which he always rocks. Caster...goes after Okada in the finishing stretch which is laughable lol. That's about it. It's the best use of the Acclaimed they could've gone with. He didn't even rap lol. Hanger and Swerve of course have their iconic moment in No Man's Land and Swerve when he takes out all of the Elite with staples and aura farm maxxed so unbelievably hard. It was very silly when they took themselves out off the stage before the finish though lol. Come on guys you coulda stayed. I like that it focused on Darby and Perry though (the MVPs). It created intrigue and natural hype for the Wembley Coffin match (which I completely forgot about two years later) and made Perry look awesome with all the crazy bumps he took. They had a lot of chemistry here its a wonder why the coffin match didnt work as well. I'll revisit that one soon. But yeah man this was a well-produced machine with perfect escalation and lots of fun crazy spots and freaking blooodd dude what more could you want. We have to get Darby back in B&G this year. And Briscoe he was great too in his supporting role! Mostly well known for that chair he launched right into Perry's head god damn! Great stuff. Maybe weirdly the best B&G before 2025? I'd have to rewatch but I think my ranking of all the mens B&G are: 5-4-2-3-1. ****1/2 |

| 9 | 19.06.2026 | arrancar | 4.0 | Hardcore-type matches, in not just AEW but all the world over, are so tired and played out because everything possible has already been done many times before, so now we only get very slight changes that ultimately amount to nothing of note aside from the cosmetic. This was definitely the case with this bog-standard cage-and-associated-props match here. Even ignoring the generic formula, there was also just too much stupidity in how the match was set up and executed. Right from the start we got a ridiculous moment as the Bucks played the ref and thus the company with a double-sided coin trick which gave them the numbers lead in the match. I get that these matches supposedly need the heels to always have that advantage, but at least don't set it up in such an obviously stupid way that makes the company and its refs look stupid. The match ended up following a very predictable formula, where The Elite would dominate whenever they had the numbers advantage but then Team AEW would dominate whenever the numbers were even. The action itself consisted of either a bunch of bland brawling or a heavy reliance on big spots, which became more and more the case as more men entered the match. As in most matches with so many wrestlers fight at once, it was often difficult to get invested in any one wrestler's struggle or any one pairing of wrestler's interactions, since the other 9 guys or other 4 pairings would always be doing something else that was either distracting in the background or directly cut into focus by the cameras. As a result, I can barely think of any actual through-lines in the match despite it's massive length, aside from Darby being endearing as always as the suffering but fiery underdog at the mercy of The Elite's numbers advantage (which never got focussed on enough because screen time had to be split with the others), or Swerve and Page reigniting their rivalry as they faced off (which I had definite issues there, as I'll get to). Other than that, it was mostly just the various wrestlers all getting time to hit their signature spots, use some of the weapons/props, or otherwise just messy-brawl around the cage as usual. The appeal of the match, therefore, was always the mindless and generic action instead of the struggles of any of the wrestlers. Because of the stipulation that the match couldn't be won until all wrestlers had entered, you also knew to not bother buying much into the action before that point, since none of the supposed damage and danger would have any effect. That was exacerbated further by how none of the wrestlers seemed to appropriately sell their mounting pain and exhaustion despite all the carnage they were putting each other through. The previously mentioned issues with Swerve and Page's interactions were numerous. Firstly, Page still has no ability to moderate his character, with his bug-eyed 'angry' expressions being difficult to take seriously (it feels like he's a sketch-comedy actor parodying an 80s wrestler). Even worse was that, after Swerve was finally freed from the handcuffs, he cut his way into the cage, leaving a massive escape hole which totally diminished the double cage's aura as essentially this punishment chamber from which no wrestler could escape until they'd destroyed each other. Half the wrestlers even spilled to the outside through that hole eventually for more brawling and spots, further diminishing the stipulation. I also hated the illogical bending of rules by The Bucks, who used their role as EVPs to not only order Page to enter the cage/match at the threat of being fired, but who somehow also ordered the refs to officially start the match despite Swerve being handcuffed outside? At that point, you may as well have had The Bucks declare the match could start back when it was 2-vs-1 against Darby, or heck, they could just decree "Team AEW is all fired -- they forfeit this match and The Elite wins". This is the issue with having authority figures in your wrestling company: the logic is never consistent and it makes a mockery of what wrestling is meant to be. It was difficult to buy into the drama of the match after those moments. The stupidity of the storytelling didn't stop there, as we also got Swerve effortlessly firing up from a 5-on-1 stapler attack to take everyone out himself (which he at least executed well) plus Darby threatening to literally SET JACK PERRY ON FIRE. Surely the absurd kayfabe consequences, and thus the major storytelling holes, for such an action do not need to be expanded upon here. And at the end of the match, what was even the point? There were no stakes in play for either team, so there was no underlying reason to care who won here. It seems even AEW realised this limitation, hence forcing in a story at the end of The Bucks offering Darby a TNT title shot in return for sparing Perry (from being... set on fire...). That was another issue in this match: guys constantly grabbing mics to cut promos (or having the camera mics pick up their LOUD dialogue) as their form of 'storytelling' instead of telling stories in the ring with their action. But yeah, why would Darby trust the Bucks' promise of a title shot when he knows they're deceitful EVPs who apparently have the authority to just take that offer back as soon as the match ended? There was still some base-level charm and entertainment in some of the spots in this match, and I can't act like a match being very generic automatically makes it awful, plus there were pockets of time where some actually decent wrestling would break out, but the vast majority of this super long match featured spots that were far too similar to stuff I'd seen many, many times before, and essentially all the bits of 'storytelling' came across as very stupid and heavyhanded. ** |

Of course it had some things I dislike, such as the Bucks using a mic to do melodrama with Hanger at the middle of the match, this is a thing from the modern wrestling that I just do not get, I do not think it is good storytelling or anything like that, but even with that, I can understand. It made sense with the story (but it was bad). Bowens was my MVP, he went all in on the hardcore stipulation and took some ridiculous bumps such as the slam on the barbed wire table and the big bump off the cage. Darby was awesome too as always and very creative, as much as I thought the ending was fucking weak. Okada and Caster were clearly the worst ones on the match but while Okada looks beast doing it, Caster looks like the idiot that he is. Swerve had a godly presentation and his hot comeback sequence with the stapler was divine, one of the best moments of the match. Overall I liked it a lot, this was the B&G Match with the most things that I love but also the one with most things that I hate. On balance, there were a lot more things to cheer than to boo and it builded a ton of stories for All In. Successful match. |

AEW fell into the same trap that WWE did with hell in a cell where this match type has to happen at a specific time period instead of rivalries developing naturally and reaching their conclusion as expected in this type of match. However now every year we have to do this match between June-July even though we totally don't have to and it could happen at any time. Lame as hell. Aside from a couple of cool hardcore spots which have blended so much with the rest of the cool hardcore spots that happen almost weekly on AEW, the only thing that was cool was the sequence between Swerve and Hangman which played into their heated feud. |

Although it has a number of memorable moments and almost all of the competitors shone through, my favourite part is by far Swerve's comeback after being attacked by the Elite with the staple guns; Such a cool moment and it made him look like a superhero as someone else said. Other than that, the ending with Perry almost looking like Jesus on the Cross, with Darby threatening to set him on fire and his remaining unfazed was quite nuts too. It's a match worth the time imo and even if you don't know the stories going into it, you can still enjoy the action. |
