Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart

[7.0] "I like this match but not as much as it's reputation. It doesn't drag at all and there's excitement in the constant escape attempts. I feel like there should be more hatred (or at least anger) in the match given the build up. The ending should be more definitive. It's a very well done escape-the-cage match, but it doesn't fit with their feud. I don't mean to be overly critical, it's just hard to articulate."

[10.0] "Holy cow, that hair on Davey is something else. An out and out fight with a million little genius spots. Uses the cage to perfect effect, a great piece of dramatic storytelling in a match with no near-falls. I can't pick between this and Wrestlemania X, they're both perfect."

[7.0] "Not the legendary encounter that the status of being one of the only WWE main roster Meltzer 5 star matches nor one of the best matches of Bret's career. However, Owen and Bret have a lot of chemistry obviously and it's still a good match but it doesn't sell the brutality of the cage or their hatred for each other."

[7.0] "Look it's GOOD, but by no means is it some legendary encounter. The best story from the early 90's and the big climax is a match where they are neither allowed to pin nor submit eachother, they must... run away, not doesn't make the most sense imo. Still a good one just not on the level it's rating or WON rating would suggest."

[4.0] "I'm using a translation tool, so this might be a bit hard to follow. I really struggle to understand why this match is rated so highly. You had a fantastic storyline involving the Hart family--Owen jealous of his brother's success, and Bret torn between not wanting to fight his family and accepting his younger brother's resolve--so why did they choose a cage match format where the *only* way to win was by escaping? If pinfalls and submissions had been valid ways to win, it could have been a great match! The match also dragged on far too long. Spare a thought for the viewer--we had to sit through over 30 minutes of the same cycle: attacks using the height of the cage followed by attempts to climb out, repeated dozens of times. I love and respect both of these guys (Bret's entrance for this match was amazing), so I hate giving such a low rating, but this match was just plain boring and terrible."

[10.0] "People have been telling us for years that it's impossible for WWE to have good cage matches due to the lack of blood. This match tells me that theory is complete nonsense. Bret & Owen had a classic steel cage match here without blood, pinfalls or submissions. Basically, all the things that most of my writing peers grew up on due to non-WWF cage matches. The fans were totally into the climbing and door spots throughout the match, and even if there wasn't any blood, Bret & Owen still had a physical match that lived up to what one would expect from a bitter rivalry. Now that things are swinging back in the other direction and we're back to seeing blood on television every couple of weeks or so, it seems to me that it'd behoove today's younger wrestlers to watch matches like this one and learn how to tell a story without bleeding all over the place."

[4.0] "Structure & Story Progression is very repetitive & just adequate, just surface-level psychology, average athletic peaks missile dropkick & superplex, the crowd reaction was great, the pacing curve was flat & the creativity was bad because there was no cage usage beyond climbing, no innovation spots, no unique sequences or transitions & no storytelling beats. Average match just & nothing more how this got 5 stars is beyond me it is an average match only. **. 4/10"

[8.0] "These guys can have a great match no matter the circumstance. Case in point, being forced to blowoff their family blood feud by being the best at running away. Awful stipulation that could've been fantastic had it not been for WWF's stupid ahh "escape the cage" rule. Still a great match though."

[6.0] "I absolutely love these guys, and if you love the stipulation, you're in for a treat. That said, I fucking hate this dumbass stipulation, and it's like watching the same thing over and over for 45 minutes. Take a shot every time either man gets cut off from escaping."

[10.0] "One of the best matches in WWE history. The main complaint about the match is the excessive number of escape attempts, however, in my opinion, this is the best thing the match has - in a match where winning via pin & submission is not possible, nothing could be more rational than the sides trying to leave the cage at every opportunity. The feeling of an endless struggle makes the WWF Championship look more important than the World Cup. Tug of war dynamic, the family thing, golden storytelling, and as a result, one of the best gimmick match examples. The greatest steel cage match in WWE history. ****3/4"

[7.0] "I didn't really like this one. Not much really stood out to me; it all felt very repetitive. Most of the work was good in an immediate sense. I liked Owen biting Bret's fingers in the chinlock, the Sharpshooter reversal, and the superplex. Both men also did a great job at selling exhaustion, althought I think it might have been a teensy bit overdone. The characters of the two were really clear. Owen was this whiny little sibling trying to make his own star at the expense of his brother. Bret was cool as a cucumber as always; he had a quiet confidence about him that served as a great contrast to Owen's hotheadedness. The crowd really seemed to be into this one too for some reason. What I didn't really like so much were the attempted cage escapes. None of them stand out from each other because they do so many. Worst of all, they almost all look very unconvincing. It's hard to explain, but there is a real sense that when one guy tries to escape the cage, they are waiting for the other one to cut them off. They'd randomly slow down at the top of the cage, get 'stuck' climbing, and dangle a leg or their head over the top in an unnatural way. The worst spots are the ones where the are entirely out of the cage and get pulled back in. Jerry Lawler kept yelling 'Just drop! ' and I have to agree. The finish was maybe the worst spot of them all. The two brothers standing on the outside of the cage, nothing stopping them from dropping to the ground and yet they just don't. They just stay there for like 30 seconds punching each other and ramming their head into the cage. Owen sticks his leg through for no reason other than to get stuck, and then Bret wins. Might be the fakest looking stuff I've ever seen from the Harts. The post match angle is actually pretty great though (although Anvil really seemed to struggle with that padlock lol). Overall, it's worth watching but only the once probably [***3/4]"

[6.0] "Pinfalls were desperately needed to break up the repetitive nature of the match. How many times do we need to see them climb the cage only to be cut off over and over again? Or simply reduce the length by 10-15 minutes to make it less repetitive."

[8.0] "The match was good and I enjoyed it but it had it's problems, like how they overused the fake finals with each one almost going out of the cage, that makes me think It was done to fill the match, but yeah the work of Bret and Owen was amazing here, the storytelling, the reactions of their family even with Stu Hart watching his sons giving the match of their lifes (to that point talking about Bret) and for climbing to come out of the cage and falling back really drained their energy if you can say it that way, because even when they were trying to do some moves on the ring, It was hard for them to get up, so yeah they were giving it all, but still I don't think it's a 5 stars, because It had moments where it was hard for me to keep the rhythm, It started building in a low fire all the way up to the end with Bret coming out, that was amazing, for me it's a 8/10 [****1/2]"

[9.0] "With the fact that the rules were escape the cage only, I think Bret and Owen made this match as compelling and dramatic as possible. The Chicago crowd was really into this also, which helped the match."

[6.0] "The match was boring. It wasn't even as good as an average Steel Cage match. Honestly, even the Steel Cage matches that happen on weekly shows these days are much better than this one. For me, the match is overrated and gets more attention than it deserves. I personally don't think it's that great, and my rating for it would be 6 out of 10."

[10.0] "A REALLY good Steel Cage Match that played into the story with Bret & Owen. It was seriously, an incredible match between two phenomenal workers."

[10.0] "I guess I am in the minority that loves escape only cage matches. And this is the greatest one in that genre. As wrestling fans, we have SO many match types that end in pinfall and submission. I am a sucker for matches that have alternative finishes. These older cage matches, ladder matches, casket matches, table matches, last man standing matches. Give me a match without pins and submissions and I am instantly more interested. Adding pins and submissions to cage took away a layer of uniqueness to me. People often say you are "running away" with the stipulation. I really see it as you are beating your opponent down so badly that you can exit a cage without them being able to stop you. It takes suspension of disbelief, but if you are a wrestling fan in general, you are already doing that! for this match specifically, unlike many other cage matches, they take the stipulation and build drama using it. The whole match's story is around them trying to escape. The close calls are so well done. Owen's lunges in particular really make you feel Bret has it won before he comes diving to stop him. They use exhaustion as a story telling mechanic. You can tell they are spent and have given everything. The bumps here are tame now, but some of these moves were VERY big spots for 1994. The crowd is dancing to the music they are playing and eating the whole thing up. I will agree that it isn't perfect, and that 5 minutes shaved off would have made it very close to perfect, but it is still enough of a gem to get 10 points from me. I think I take this match ever so slightly to their Wrestlemania 10 classic. One of the all time greatest matches in company history, and for my money, the greatest cage match of all time."

[9.0] "one of my fave steel cage matches of all time. the run time is a bit long yes but for the story these two told in the ring, it was well worth it imo. I understand the criticism with the amount of times both men tried to escape the cage since it got repetitive, but considering the story they were telling with Bret and Owen, it makes a lot of sense they are brothers after all, they know each other like the back of their hands. during this time Owen was still in Brett's shadow as the younger brother and no matter how hard he tried, he still wasn't able to escape it. just like at wm 10. just like here at summerslam, but this time he lost. members of the Hart family being ringside added a lot of drama to this match too. the crowd was red hot for this one from beginning to end with one of the most creative finishes you will ever see in regards to a cage match that results in Brett just barely escaping with victory here after both him and Owen were escaping the cage but Owens leg got stuck in between the cage. then the angle after the match that took place with the members of the family was sick too. this rocked. ****1/2"

[7.0] "One of the most hated stipulations for me when Steel Cage is about running away. Also didnt make sense for the story they were telling. Its only for Bret and Owen that they still made it watchable even if it dragged at the end."

[4.0] "*sigh* Bear with me on this one. First of all, I should get out of the way that my absolute least favorite match in pro wrestling is the escape-only cage match. Cage matches are meant to settle blood feuds (literally in this case). You should never be able to win by RUNNING AWAY from your opponent. And that's basically this entire match. Both dudes make their first escape attempt within the first three minutes of the match. Imagine if one of them succeeded. "Yeah I beat my brother for the world title on pay per view by running away from him as soon as I could". Bruh. And that's the entire match. They taking turns trying to escape, usually slowly, until the other one grabs his ankle or hand or something and he immediately becomes TOTALLY PARALYZED at the top of the cage like it's a video game. Bro, just pull your foot away from him. Then there's a (singular) spot, they both have a rest, and repeat the entire thing. That's the formula for at least 95% of this match's THIRTY TWO MINUTE runtime. Just for grins I decided to make a tally mark every time someone tried to escape. Final tally: THIRTY TWO LMAO. This is a cage match. Give me violence. Maybe have a bunch of attempts in the first third of the match and then they start to realize "Hey, maybe I should actually try to wear down my opponent a bit before I try to escape"? And then in the final third have fewer, more interesting, more compelling escape attempts? To be fair, it's all done very well, which it should be considering these are two of the best wrestlers WWE has ever seen. The storytelling is very good given the stipulation and absolutely rigid format of the match they imposed upon themselves. While both men do a good job of building up the impact of the (singular) spots between escape attempts as the match, the finish is the most egregious thing. Both guys are hanging from the cage like in Super Mario World outside the ring, and decide THAT is when they're going to have a fist-fight. Jerry Lawler even shouts it, JUST JUMP DOWN! Hey dummy, what happens when you hit him so hard he loses his grip and falls to the floor and you lose? But then we can't get the cinematic (and admittedly great) visual of Owen getting his leg stuck in his leg upside down from the cage. Great cast with a bad script. I did love (love love) Bret reversing the Sharpshooter into a Sharpshooter though. I also understand that Bret was physically ill and for him to put in such a performance in that condition is amazing. Also the crowd is really hot for the entire thing. I dunno, maybe I'm just weird? Good is good, repetitive is not good. I don't want a four-course dinner consisting entirely of birthday cake flavored Kit Kat bars. 4.5 rounded down."

[6.0] "As has been already spoken about - the stipulation made no sense in the context of the build up - Owen beat Bret cleanly at Mania, Bret needed to prove that he was the best in the family, the Anvil wasn't that big a factor to consider a cage being necessary. The only escaping the cage stipulation detracted from it, as well as the tiny cage that was barely held together. What hasn't really been talked about is how bad the commentary is - neither of them really sound enthusiastic or sell the big escape spots particularly well. There's plenty of spots where Bret just allows himself to look like an idiot by feeding Owen spots to escape the cage. Also - Davey Boy on his first night back as a returning hero babyface looks like an idiot where Neidhart hits his wife, and then can't get into the cage while allowing him to escape."

[8.0] "The word repetitive is used in regards to this match because it is repetitive. I know escaping is the point but when it's 90% of the match for over 30 minutes, it starts to drag at times. All that being said, it's still very very good. Just not on the same level as their WM X classic. The ending sequence and post-match angle in particular with Neidhart, Bulldog, and the Hart family was excellent. The match just really could have benefitted having 5-10 minutes shaved off the runtime in my opinion."

[9.0] "[4.5*] This match is just brilliant. In my opinion, a step above their Mania match. This is the match where they showed what the feud is all about, this is the match where they spent 32 minutes trying to beat each other at every second, this is the match of the feud. Some people may say this is repetitive and I got to say: yeah, it is and it RULES. This is a match for the WWF World Championship between two brothers. If you have a brother you will know that you always do contests to see who wins. Brotherhood is a very competitive relationship lmfao. They were in a Escape The Cage Match where the goal is exactly what the name tells. Of fucking course they were going to try to escape at every second and not only beat the brother once and for all but also become the World Champion in front of the whole family. Is there anything more competitive than this? No! So I honestly loved the route they went. Every single time one of them tried to escape the other gave his life to stop it and it always ended with some nasty bumps. I wanna know how their backs felt after this one because holy shit man both of them fell from a high ground on their backs A TON of times. This is another thing that captivated me a lot, every single time the result was different, the bump was different, the way to stop the opponent was different. It showed an incredible psychology because they were brothers, they competed against and alongside each other throughout their whole life, of course they would know the way to stop them. This is why this is so special. It makes sense for them to resist 30+ minutes against the person who they know the best on their lives. The atmosphere for this match was SO much better than the Mania one, they were so fucking loud at every attempt to escape, this was clearly more successful with the live audience. It had the special ingredient of the family interview too, it was awesome and should have Main Evented the show. This has some small details that I loved due to their unmatchable chemistry. There is a time where Owen jumps at the perfect second to stop Bret from leaving from the door, so smooth. Another random moment that I loved was when Bret hit a simple DDT and tried to escape immediately. Seems repetitive and boring but why would you not try to escape after putting your opponents head to the ground? The first match is a match that I admired, this is a match that I loved. The best Steel Cage I have ever seen and I do not think it will be topped because the execution was amazing. Just missed blood."

[9.0] "Steel Cage matches might be one of my least favorite stipulations, but this is the exception. The stipulation still hurts the match as far as i'm concerned, mainly because they try to escape from the very start, which is kinda lame for such a heated rivalry and when the match is sold as a way for them to be locked in and settle things up without any interference. Other than that, the family members ringside certainly add some drama, it's a grueling over 30 minutes match with a hot crowd, good action, great sense of urgency, lots of tension. The post-match made the whole thing feel a bit inconclusive, but it remains a highly engaging and satisfying match. **** 1/4"

[10.0] "It's a bit below their WWF WrestleMania 10 (1994) masterpiece, but this was still a really phenomenal match between both men with absolutely spectacular action and psychology between each other and it's another classic in the single best sibling rivalry in all of wrestling."

[10.0] "Incredibly awesome steel cage match. This is one of the best Steel Cage matches. Bret Hart and Owen Hart worked there butts off. I think Bret Hart winning was a good idea."

[9.0] "Great match, though it is one I have gone back and forth on over the years for the same reason many have mentioned disliking it in the comments. Namely, it is a thirty plus minute match and it is indeed quite repetitive with the constant escape attempts. At the same time, is probably the most logical cage match to be wrestled with escape as an option to win. I will also give Bret and Owen immense credit for managing to do something different with each attempt at escape, with the two progressively becoming more desperate and tired as the match wears on. There are some great spots also, with the highlights being the superplex from the top of the cage and the finish. Speaking of which, the finish was great. Owen opting to place his leg through the bars to try and pummel Bret some more was a great story beat. It highlighted how Owen's anger at Bret got the best of him while he brother was able to remain focused entirely on winning and retaining his world championship. The post-match brawl was a little awkward at points due to the Harts not really coordinating their efforts at entering the cage to save Bret from Owen and Neidhart's beatdown. I know some have said this match doesn't feel as heated or as hate-filled as it should because of all the escape attempts and lack of blood, but I think they did a good job of communicating that without having to resort to the usual bloodbath. Owen screaming that he was going to break Bret's legs while he had him in the sharpshooter was great for this, and it played into the finish with Bret being able to maintain the cooler head in order to prevail against the more aggresive Owen. Could it have used maybe a few less escape attemts and about a five minute shorter runtime? Yes, but the match was still entertaining throughout and it was genuinely impressive that they managed to keep the live crowd on the edge of its seat for half-an-hour. The crowd really added to this; without them going crazy for every escape attempt, the match would have fallen totally flat as there would have been no drama or tension. This is a really great example of how a crowd can really make or break a match just by reacting to it as the performers intended. Overall, a flawed but great match. The best in the history of SummerSlam up to this point. ****1/2"

[5.0] "Nowhere near the level of their WM X match. Much of this match is terribly dull, filled with a whole lot of not much happening. I didn't even find the escape battles all that exciting, and given thar they're the most significant moments of the match, that doesn't reflect well on it. As it's Bret and Owen, there's still a level of care and attention here, but it's in service of a boring match. I could see people liking this if they find the climbing battles particularly enthralling, which was undoubtably the case with the live crowd, but I just did not enjoy this much at all."

[10.0] "Yes it's repetitive because it's logical, technical and brutal. It's 32 minute runtime is incredibly well paced and booked, every false finish and twist is executed masterfully by the brothers. The superplex , Sharpshooter reversal, the ending, the aftermath, all goosebumps inducing. Can you imagine watching this live? Truly one of the greatest WWF matches ever"

[9.0] "Great high drama match. Fun match seeing them trying to escape the cage in the beginning but got too repetitive with it. Why say you're gonna beat each other up to teach a lesson then end up being eager to quickly leave the cage? Very technical but could've done more better if they beat each other up more since its a follow up from their 'Mania match. Great angle at the end to add more drama and story into the Hart family arc."

[6.0] "As some have already said, it's too repetitive, and far too long given the content on offer in the ring. On top of that, the stipulation doesn't really help. I really don't understand how this match was booked. On the other hand, I thought the ending was good."

[5.0] "Bret vs. Owen inside the cage at SummerSlam '94 had solid storytelling, but it dragged way too much. The technical work was great, as expected, but the constant escape attempts made it feel repetitive rather than dramatic. It lacked the intensity you'd want from a heated brother vs. brother feud inside a cage. The finish was decent, but overall, it didn't live up to their WrestleMania X classic. A very disappointing match that lasts way too long. I really don't understand the high rating for this one."

[9.0] "Usually, steel cage matches are nothing special. Most of the time, they're pretty shit. This was not that. This was easily the greatest steel cage match I've seen to date. They started off hot with Owen immediately going after Bret as he's entering the cage and continues until Bret shuts it down. I like how this first stretch of the match establishes just how evenly matched the brothers are. The final 10-15 minutes of the match is truly great though. It's a lot more focused on the wrestling side of things rather than stopping escape attempts. The finish of the match itself was very well done with Owen getting stuck in the cage, allowing Bret to drop down for the win. That pop from the crowd was amazing. Speaking of which, the crowd was electric throughout this whole match. They were thoroughly behind Bret the whole time. Each time Bret would make an attempt to escape, everyone visible would jump to their feet and be hooting and hollering. Truly one of the greatest crowds for a match I've seen. Both men here put on great performances. They sold the effects of the cage well and did what they could with the limited stipulation they had to work with. They also did a wonderful job of setting up spots where it looked like Owen had a legit shot to win the title. I'm sure if I was able to either watch this live or without knowing the result, I would've been way more into it. That brings me to my only real complaint. This was way too long. They did not need to go 32 minutes. There was a solid 10-15 minute portion of this match that was very repetitive with both guys attempting to escape and foiling the others' attempts. It just wasn't it for me. I wasn't exactly bored, but I was ready for it to get to the next part of the match. Regardless, this was fantastic. Do I agree with the 5 star rating? Not really, but it was close. In the end, I think the stipulation made them very limited as to what they could do. I feel like if this had been the first iron man match, it could've been way better, or maybe they could've had the match end in a draw and then have the iron man match later on. Either way, it probably would've been better. In conclusion, this is definitely a must watch. The runtime may deter some, but you should still watch it. 9/10 [****1/2]"

[3.0] "This match was so boring, i get it, the way to win is to escape, but crawling towards the door for 30 minutes is NOT fun. I liked the build up and the storyline and i think their WrestleMania X match was a 5-star classic, but their feud was so personal that i think the cage should've been used to keep them IN not for them to escape. I was bored out of my mind watching this even tho i like them both ( i mean how can you hate owen and bret hart in ring? ) i was just waiting for them to kick it to next gear but they never did. the harts climbing in trying to save bret was kinda nice i guess but i was too bored to care. Maybe i set myself to faliure expecting this match to be high paced - two guys trying to kill eacchother type of cagematch but this was the opposite."

[10.0] "When I was younger, I thought this cage match was unnecessarily long and featured a lot of crawling around trying to escape the cage. So, therefore, I hated it. Now, I see the appeal. The Hart family saga breaks loose here during the brother's feud with Jim Neidhart, Bruce Hart, and Davey Boy Smith all getting involved, either on purpose or accidentally. While I find a lot of Bret's work extremely overrated, particularly in his own mind, I have grown to love this match for the family drama within it. It's a shame Owen's life was cut short, because his best stuff came with his brother, and I would've loved to have seen him shine on his own."

Es wird zwar viel versucht aus dem Käfig zu entkommen aber zu keiner Zeit in dieser Zeitlupe, wie man es heute kennt, sondern mit mehr Elan, wodurch das gleich viel besser wirkt."

[7.0] "Start with the positive. Both guys look absolutely excellent here. Everything they do looks awesome, and they take some crazy bumps as well. Most praiseworthy about their performance is the sense of struggle with the near-escapes from the cage, and it makes for probably the most realistic feeling Steel Cage Match ever. But even with all those positives, it's prevented from being a classic by the match's very structure. This match goes way too long, and especially the middle section gets very dull and repetitive. The input from both guys is phenomenal, but they just keep doing the same stuff over and over again for stretches that are just too long, no matter how good they make it look."

[7.0] "The repetitiveness is what brings the rating down for me. I liked the first couple of times that one of them tries to escape and is dragged down at the last second, what I didn't like was that same spot happening for what felt like the entire match. The in ring stuff was good, but when its just the same attempted escape again and again and again, it just stops the match going to that special place for me"

[10.0] "The best steel cage match I've seen. A technical masterclass and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Bret and Owen going back and forth simply trying to escape is so exciting. This is such a great match and exactly how steel cage matches should be done. The excitement of the wrestler escaping, using the cage as a weapon, while also wrestling perfectly. The run-ins were actually pretty good as well. [*****]"

[8.0] "I enjoyed how the majority of the match focused on the guys trying to actually escape and climb out of the cage and the battling they did to counter the escapes. A lot of big back-body drops and slams from elevated positions and the clear drama and story with a good finish. Post match was exciting as well."

[9.0] "This was the culmination of one of the greatest rivalries ever, Owen Hart outsmarted his brother and won the brother vs brother match at WrestleMania, but Bret still managed to walk out the WWF Champion at the end of the night, meaning that even when Owen got the biggest victory of his life, against his own and more famous brother, he was still on the shadow and saw his brother conquer the maximum glory. This lead to this match right here at SummerSlam, a steel cage match, for the title, as it was right to Owen for winning the King of the Ring, and declaring himself the King of Harts. The build couldn't be bigger, the story was all-timer, the match had huge stakes and anticipation, and they even had several Hart Family members watching the match outside, with some rooting for Bret and others for Owen, this was the ultimate match. And the match was absolutely excellent, but it's safe to say that I was expecting more, not necessarily because of them, but the match was progressed in a way that it became extremely repetitive, and I'm not even really mad about it, I liked it, it creates tension and anticipation, but I can understand if some people say they don't like this match because of it, it's true, the match is insanely repetitive, they keep changing between climbing the cage and sneaking trough the door over and over, the same spot all the time, and despite me personally being cool about it most of the time, I can't put this match in front of their technical masterpiece at WrestleMania. At the end of the day, the crowd loved it, they were engaged the whole match, crazy atmosphere. Awesome sellings by both, they played with exhaustion brilliantly, and showed to the world all the hate they had grown inside for their brother, specially Owen, he took it to the heart. The crowd really helped this match, they were so invested that was impossible for the match to be bad, but they had all the ingredients in my opinion, to wrestled a perfect match here and it wasn't, mainly because WWF was trying to be more television-suited and didn't wanted blood and too much violence at their stuff, so the Harts did what they could, they extracted everything out of this one - {****1/4}"

[10.0] "My god what a match i did not think it was going to be this good but this exceeded all expectations only thing is it shoudve main evented in my opinion - i know their brothers but the chemistry owen and bret has is so good for me this is the best steel cage match i've ever seen no doubt a ***** classic 10/10"

[10.0] "On one hand, this is possibly the greatest "escape the cage" match I've ever seen, despite not being in love with that stipulation - I've always preferred the kind of Steel Cage match where the goal was to keep other factors, such as outside interference, OUT, and the only way to win is by pinfall or submission. This stipulation slightly peeved me when Owen tapped to the Sharpshooter but it didn't count. On the other, the drama surrounding that stipulation makes it hard to give it less than an A+ rating. I 100% prefer the WrestleMania X match, but this might be a matter of personal preference. They did do a few too many repeated escape attempts for my taste, but this was as close to perfect as you can get for a stip that I don't particularly love. ****3/4"

But that means nothing, inside the cage they did an amazing job, the inly things that bothered me were the repeated attempts to escape the cage, too frenetic for my taste. But the rest is perfection, the excellence (of execution? ). This match proves why Hart dynasty was/is the top tier of wrestling."

[7.0] "I'm afraid I do agree with the common criticism that this match is a bit too repetitive because of the constant escape attempts, and I do wish there had been a bit more in-ring work combined with them. Still, it was definitely an exciting match, with a strong storyline that contributed to the psychology of the match and chemistry between the two brothers, and there were several great spots as well, especially Bret suplexing Owen off the top of the cage..."

[10.0] "This was a perfect cage match. The psychology in this was absolutely fantastic. I know that some people think this is really repetitive because of how many times they tried to escape the cage, but I personally loved it. *****"

[9.0] "The match between Bret Hart and Owen Hart at WrestleMania X is one of my favorites in wrestling history. Just an absolute clinic in technical wrestling and storytelling, all the while pulling out spots that would fit in today's era. The match that is often referred to as their greatest encounter, however, is the one that happened months later inside of a Steel Cage at SummerSlam 1994. This was not exactly the type of Steel Cage match that we see today, as the violence and brutality, or at times absence of, was more about one-upmanship and the bitter rivalry between brothers. And that really is the story here. Neither wanted to hurt their brother, they just wanted to prove they were better than the other. The Steel Cage was not meant to be an instrument of destruction, but instead a guarantee that it would come down to the best man winning. They also bought into the essential element of trying to escape the cage, even doing so in a way that was reminiscent of two brothers in their home fighting to get the last bite of food. That led to the equivalent of several near falls. This was the epitome of psychology in a wrestling match, and while it is not my favorite, I respect its place in history. And the brilliance of the approach. 4.75 stars, 9.5 out of 10."

[4.0] "Honestly, this match was kind of a slog to sit through at times. I really did not like the back and forth between Owen and Hart, it was entirely predictable as each of them kept going to escape the cage. I wish the match focused more on its mat work as each of these guys are of course, great at that. The story was ok, I like Owen's character work, really ahead of its time and Bret is a pretty decent babyface as well. But also I found myself not caring too much overall about the involvement of the Hart family."

[10.0] "I have gone back and forth on my opinion of this match over the years. When I was in my early teens I loved it, then as a young adult I thought it was incredibly boring. Going back and watching it now as a not-so-young adult, I think it's fantastic. Bret and Owen wrestle exactly how they should given the stipulation and the storyline. They are single minded about winning the match, and do everything they possibly can to claim victory. Logically speaking, it's probably how just about every cage match with escape rules should be wrestled, it's just that so few actually are that it feels quite strange to see the competitors value winning above all else. When I disliked the match, I viewed it as the two doing the same thing over and over again ad nauseam, but rewatching it now they actually do a really brilliant job changing a lot of little things about their escape attempts (whether it's the exact positioning, the way either man sells the attempt, or the move that is used to counter it). Little things like Bret clawing at the mat as Owen pulls him from the door are added as tensions rise and the match becomes increasingly taxing on the competitors. They fight in a manner that is befitting of two brothers with a grudge - hair pulling, desperately scraping and clawing at each other, and climbing over the top of each other in an attempt to escape the cage. The only time it feels like a traditional wrestling match is the Sharpshooter exchange (which Owen adds a lot of venom to by exclaiming that he's going to break Bret's legs), which Bret smartly reverses in to one of his own, showing his own level of expertise when it comes to the maneuver. What really sets this match apart for me, however, is the selling. The two make everything feel so grueling and exhausting, just like it should after thirty minutes of desperation, and they manage to milk every moment to its maximum impact in order to generate as much suspense as possible. Look at the moment where Owen stands up to stop Bret from climbing after banging his head against the cage, only to collapse before he gets the chance, and the resulting crowd reaction. Look at Bret's reaction following the superplex, where he tries at least three times to get up following the move. Everything matters here, and all the little moments feel so much bigger because of the amount of thoughtfulness and purpose that they all have. For the story that the two were seeking to tell here, the match is flawlessly executed. The drama extends to the post-match as well, and I would consider the moment where the entire family tries to climb into the cage to save Bret as Owen and Neidhart viciously attack him while he is trapped and defenceless to be an all-time classic angle, and Owen's promo following the match is excellent, too. Everything feels authentic. I will give the caveat that you really need to be in the right frame of mind for this match, as it is very long and not paced or structured in a way that is common for steel cage matches or even really pro wrestling in general (especially today), but if you're in the right headspace for it then this is an excellent match to study to pick up on some of the finer details of wrestling. Finally, it is worth noting that watching all of the pre-match where they interview the Hart family at ringside adds a lot here, as does being familiar with the wrestling of the time. There is a great deal of tension and drama here, and the match will be improved greatly if you go into it having experienced as much of the context that surrounds the match as possible instead of going in completely cold."

[7.0] "For me, this match between Bret and Owen did not compare to the Wrestlemania X match. It was still good but I think both wrestlers spent too much time on the cage, much too early in the match. This was still a very good match for both. However, it lacked the pace of the classic X match-up and the drama of the cage spots lost it's appeal half way through."

[10.0] "Great match with great intensity. Each attempt to escape from the cage is magnificently stopped. The finish is beautiful and successful. I don't know if this match could have been written better. (5*)"

[7.0] "The stipulation of the match killed the great chemistry between the two brothers. Though the primal rage and animosity was felt throughout the match, the pattern the bout followed is pretty predictable and easy to guess within those 30 minutes. Bret and Owen are great wrestlers, but in this particular bout they were able to offer the viewer pointless tug-of-war with each other and only a trio of memorable moments. The history of the Hart feud is diamante."

[7.0] "29/8/1994 SummerSlam WWF. If this match was condensed it would in no doubt get a 10/10, but the structure of the WWF cage match didn't allow for a long match. Even if they got rid of the cage door stipulation it would of helped. In saying that the psychology is off the charts and ring generalship is absolutely flawless. Every ring exit attempt is done and undone to perfection, no fake 5 mins setting up a spot, all natural and incorporated into a real fight scenario, so much so I was lost in this match at times. The reverse sharpshooter was absolute genius and done like two magicians. The finish was also brilliant and the aftermath was good, a little botched but still worked. Only flaw is the length and the amount of exit attempts, maybe first 3 quarters should of been just a match to punish each other then begin the exit attempts. Possibly the best psychology and in ring work of all WWF cage matches, but not the best story behind the four sheets of metal. 7* maybe a future 8* on another watch."

[5.0] "It's so incredibly long. It has some brilliant moments like both Harts racing to the cage's door, the Superplex from the top of the structure or the Sharpshooter counter. Them constantly slamming each other from the height of the third rope makes it feel like an absolutely exhausting battle which was the goal, but at the same time it takes sooo long to climb the cage and prepare each other for the slam/suplex. I really wanted to like this but it was unnecessarily long and a lot of times it felt like they had the crowd in the palms of their hands but they still didn't go for the finish. Disappointing match for me, but still alright in terms of the story told and the participants' work rate."

[4.0] "My God! What a boring match! Comparing the absurd classic and one of the best matches in WWE history that these two brothers delivered at WrestleMania X, this here is painful and sleepy, nothing in this match works for me, the dynamics of escaping the cell are terrible and the rhythm is what kills everything at once, it's 30 minutes that could very well be invested in a singles match or without that damn escape victory stipulation. There are 30 minutes to see the two brothers in the best feud of the time making a tag of who escapes the cell first, the only minimally memorable moment here is the superplex applied by Bret from above the cell, besides, it makes me sleepy just watching think (**)"

[10.0] "I love this match - I know a lot of people find it repetitive and I suppose it is, but I've just watched it again for the first time in years and even knowing the outcome I was on the edge of my seat every time Bret or Owen headed for the door or up the side of the cage. The crowd certainly seem to be invested in it! The psychology behind the match makes sense to me - despite their feud they don't want to badly hurt each other, they just want to prove who is the best and to do that they need to escape from the cage. They don't really do a lot of actual wrestling in this match, but when they do it's technically perfect as you would expect from these two. The highlights include Bret superplexing Owen from over the top of the cage (doesn't that ring look hard to land on! ) and Bret transitioning from Owen's sharpshooter into his own sharpshooter. Having the rest of the Hart family, including British Bulldog and Jim Neidhart, watching from the front rows and climbing the cage at the end, adds to the story. Great match, but probably needs to be watched in the context of 1994, rather than with knowledge of all the other steel cages matches that followed."

[10.0] "Loved this match. Not the technical masterclass of their Wrestlemania match, which I do slightly prefer, but a lot of fun in a different way. The chaos at the end is absolutely hilarious, Owen and Neidhart in the cage attacking Bret, as the rest of the Hart family try and scale the walls of the cage but keep getting knocked off by Owen and Neidhart is just great slapstick comedy."

[9.0] "One of the common criticisms of this match was that almost all of it consisted of two wrestlers trying to escape the cage instead of brawling it out as the feud dictated. But this is not a valid critique if you know the context: Bret Hart did not want to be in a blood feud with his own brother - he only wanted to remain champion. And Owen Hart cared more about proving himself to be the top star than making Bret suffer, which meant winning the title above all else. Thus, it makes perfect sense that both men were desperately trying to win in the quickest way possible. That's not to say that this was flawless, although it was really great. It did get a bit boring at times, and there was an odd moment where Bret went for an elbow drop from the top rope instead of escaping the cage, which is inconsistent with how he laid out the rest of the match. ****1/2"

[2.0] "I love Bret Hart. I love Owen Hart. I love their WrestleMania X match. I love their 9 month build to this showdown. I should also like their rematch at SummerSlam right? No. They have one note story, both wanting to escape the cage and they stretch it for over 30 minutes. 30 cage escape attempts. They were doing that in minute one and they were doing that minute 30. This is beyond ridiculous. They never kicked up a gear. You want to tell a better story? Have Bret only trying to walk out the door when he has incapacited Owen, showing that he is the superior brother and have Owen Hart being conflicted in his desire to win the WWF Championship and thus he has to escape the cage, and his desire to beat the piss out of his brother to show that he is the better brother and he shows just how much he despises him, but that bitterness and hatred backfires and he loses when he could have won if he kept himself in check. But no, they instead did... whatever they did. Sure the live crowd loved it, but I didn't. I think the lack of a referee inside the cage and thus no pinfall or submission also hurt the match badly."

[9.0] "So much story and history behind this match. The WM match, the family arguments, the interviews, everything was going for this match and suggested that it was going to be something special and special it was. Even though the escape stip is rather dumb, they play to the stip perfectly in this match, the spot where they were climbing over each other was great and had me marking out. That's all I really need to say about this match. Watch this match. ****1/2"

[8.0] "I will echo the sentiment others have on this match in that the stipulation honestly hurt it to an extent, and I personally think Bret and Owen? s straight up wrestling match at W10 was better, that being said this was still a very good cage match. It took sometime to get into high gear, but once it did it became five times more enjoyable. Overall, a very enjoyable match."

[8.0] "I liked their Mania 10 match more. This cage match had a repeat formula. Bret tries climbing the cage, Owen pulls him down, hits a move. Owen tries climbing the cage, Bret pulls him down, Bret hits a move. Bret tries climbing....you get it right? Over 30 minutes of this and then things get interesting when Anvil wipes out Bulldog and Diana at the same time then Owen and Neidhart beat the snot out of Hitman while the rest of the brothers try to climb the cage. Liked it more for the post match family feud honestly."

[9.0] "Easily the greatest Summerslam match ever, and was also the best Steel Cage match up until 2021, which says a lot about this match. The obvious story of the two brothers coming to blows is great, but I love how the cage was just used to keep the two locked in, rather than a weapon. It was rarely used as a force in this match, and I think that is why it is unique. It is not like other Cage matches where it is just full on massacre and brutality, it is simplistic. It may not be everybody? s cup of tea, but if you appreciate great stories being told in matches, this is it. It is a true masterpiece. ****3/4"

[10.0] "Easily and undoubtedly the greatest Steel Cage bout ever in all of professional wrestling, and one of the best SummerSlam matches of all time. This was literally perfect storytelling from start to finish, with merely two brothers going out there and trying everything in their power to WIN. It's such a crying shame this wasn't the main event of the night, especially taking into account the fantastic build-up and the spectacular long-term story leading up to it. I thought WM X was slightly better as far as their two big matches go, but really though, you can't go wrong with either of them. And if that's enough, you also have an epic post-match segment to make sure the rivalry can continue all the way to next year! (Spoiler: it sadly didn't) [*****]"

[9.0] "The match is really good and the story they tell of trying to keep the opposing man on the ground is great. But this suffers from some repetitiveness from being a true 5 star classic. The ending where Owen leg gets caught up in the cage, it allows Bret to escape was quite creative.****1/2"

I understand that a lot of people don't like the constant cage escape attempts but I am okay with it because this isn't a hate-filled, bloody, grudge feud. It is emotional and resentful but it is still based on competition. It is about proving who is a better wrestler and finding a way to outdo your opponent and be the first to escape the cage is a form of a technical battle in its own way. Some specific moments in this match felt like a petty brotherly squabble and that is exactly the point. So I commend the decision to do something unique with this match. It was extremely long but it didn't feel it because they kept the pace brisk, there wasn't blatant downtime, and the cage escape attempts were all built to or culminated in really creative ways. I love the violent cage match brawls as much as anyone but if you're going to do this type of match, it literally can't be done any better."

[9.0] "For me this is the best steel cage match I've seen and I'm shocked its taken me this long to watch it. Felt it was slightly below there Wrestlemania X classic but this was absolutely fantastic. It's a cage match with really great psychology that i never even thought about how it would add to the match, Hart constantly trying to escape but with most simplest of moves got the biggest reactions whether its them holding onto each others hair when there over the top of the cage to bring them in. It did however get a bit too much after a while because despite the logic this is wrestling and you still need to be pulling of moves in the match to damage your opponent to make the escape easier The suplex near the end was really breath-taking. Owen was such a great heel throughout and the chemistry between these 2 really showed. The ending was brilliant and really a hate filled brawl compared to the technical classic with a lot more strikes. The story coming in was brilliant with Bret being the WWF champion after his brother defeated him the same night. Having the Hart family there really added to the match too"

[6.0] "As good of workers as both brothers were, this match suffers from a poor stipulation. The build to two brothers not only showing who was the better man but the best in the company had the added help of Owen's heelish antics making this a blood feud to be settled inside a Steel Cage. Therein lies the dilemma. A steel cage match under WWF's stipulations at the time turned a blood feud that needed to have a winner into two men constantly running away from each other. Bret & Owen's skill could only take them so far when more than half the match is them trying their damndest to not break kayfabe as they slowly work their way out of the cage while trying to give the other time to sell. As the match goes on, it gets more obvious that the kayfabe is busted. This match needed the old WCCW style of steel cage match and I think it could have been great, but it winds up being a great story with great wrestlers that still manages to fall flat."

[10.0] "This is probably the best WWF styled cage match I've seen. I understand how some won't like it as classic WWF cage matches have always been more like climbing contests than the hate filled brawls they usually were in other companies, so if you're used to a diet of that cage style then the WWF style can be jarring by comparison. That being said, I think this one is a thrilling contest, and pretty realistic too, as it's all built around the drama of both Hart's trying to escape the cage as quickly as they can. It's probably what a match like this would look if it were real, with both men scrapping and trying to get away from the other so they can win. It's still super entertaining to this day and the hot crowd makes it all the better. One of my favourite WWF cage efforts, up there with Hulk Hogan's battles with Mr. Wonderful and Big Boss Man"

Bret and Owen made great use of the steel cage stipulation, creating a great match out of their environment. I see some complaints saying that they tried escaping the cage too much, but no matter how many times they did, it didn't feel repetitive to me. It felt like they were trying to win the match. There were some really great close calls and other spots here which all built up to a climactic ending where Owen's leg gets caught in the cage and Bret escapes. Awesome match. ****1/2"

[9.0] "This was an awesome follow up to their Wrestlemania match, though personally I think it's slightly below that one, but that's a difficult act to follow. Great wrestling and strong intensity to it, a near perfect way to blow off their rivalry."

[3.0] "These two are tremendous performers and their WrestleMania match is an absolute classic, but this is just... not very good. Like it's mostly slow attempts to escape the cage over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Like it doesn't even make sense in the context of kayfabe, like why after all their attempts have failed are they still hitting their opponent with one basic move then trying to escape instead of actually working in incapacitate the other. There were some good moments in this match, but honestly those were few and far between. The sibling rivalry aspect also didn't shine through in this match nearly as much as in their WrestleMania match. In their WrestleMania match there was a real sense that Owen had something to prove and Bret had an air of arrogance and didn't take him as seriously as he should've, but this match just felt like two dude fighting. You could've removed the sibling aspect and had the exact same match. I don't know, I was really expecting to enjoy this match and that just made it even more disappointing that it was honestly pretty boring and bad. *3/4-"

[7.0] "The first 10-15 minutes of this almost took me out of it with all the escape attempts and really lack of any actual wrestling. But hey I stuck around for it and it turned out quite good as it felt the crowd got more invested too, the escape attempts were a lot more tense and there was actually a sense of desperation ***œ"

[9.0] "This is by far the best WWF style, escape the cage to win, cage match I've ever seen. The main reasons for this is that it never insults my intelligence, and it always makes sense from a psychological standpoint. Usually in these kinds of matches I have to suspend my disbelief a little too much as to why they just don't walk out the damned door. Instead this match plays on that as we get near escapes both through the door and over the top for over a half an hour. The fact that it's two brothers fighting in a cage with his family watching from ringside adds to the match, and they put on a classic. The highlight of the match is a monstrous superplex from off almost the top of the cage. However, I thought they should've gone to the finish after that spot, but they go back to another near escape sequence, which makes the match feel like it overstays its welcome a little bit, but other than that, this is about as perfect as a cage match as you can get with these stipulations. ****3/4"

[5.0] "There? s not much I can say that hasn? t already been said by detractors. The escape sequences that take up a large portion of this match get pretty old after a while. I did like the actual wrestling done by the 2. Also found the ending sequence outside the cage to be very well done. Can? t really say I find this match more than decent at best and nowhere near their WM 10 bout."

[5.0] "This match was pretty exciting *when it happened* but hasn't aged particularly well due to the fact that once you know who won the match, pretty much ALL of the drama of the escape attempts is nullified. And that's literally what at least 1/3 of this match is--very slow, dramatic escape attempts. The wrestling in-between that was solid, but it just feels like it drags out forever because of all the slow cage climbing. They also don't use the cage enough as a weapon, considering this was supposed to be a grudge match. Their match from Wrestlemania X has definitely stood the test of time, whereas this one hasn't IMO."

[10.0] "I am not a fan of giving score to a wrestling match but for this one, I give 5 stars. The battle between the 2 brothers who don? t want to beat each other as much as leaving the cage to win the championship and put an end to a long an emotional family feud. The steel cage stipulation make sense, the emotion, the psychology, all was there. I don? t understand people who said there was too many escape attempts because for me, it was the main part of the match. They are brother, Bret didn? t want to brutalized his younger brother and Owen just wanted to beat his older brother and win the championship to prove a point. A brutal bloody mess wasn? t necessary at this point. Perfect cage match !"

[10.0] "What is there to say about this match? Not only is it the perfect culmination of a very well told 9 month story, the match itself is brilliant. Great psychology, with both guys doing pretty much everything to *win* and telling a story simply based on that. The way they pull their tughts and hair in order to prevent the other from winning, everything is smart and makes it a very believable wrestling match. The ending is also good, and both of them came out looking great. One for the ages. *****"

[9.0] "Dieses Match lebt von mehreren Dingen. Zum einen natürlich von der Hintergrundstory, die wiederum auch zu vielen emotionalen Momenten im Match führt. Zum Anderen von der Spannung, die von den ersten Versuchen den Käfig zu verlassen bis zum Ende da ist und vor Allem durch sehr viele Schlüsselmomente, wo es sich wieder zu drehen scheint, aufrecht erhalten und gesteigert. Darüberhinaus natürlich von der handwerklichen Klasse von beiden. Technisch und in Sachen Selling ist das natürlich großartig. Dennoch muss ich sagen, dass bei diesem zurecht so bekannten und sehr guten Match für mich ein bisschen was zur vollen Punktzahl fehlt. Ich verstehe das Pacing theoretisch am Ende des Matches und der langsame Beginn macht vom Aufbau her auch Sinn aber ich finde sie haben das etwas zu lange gezogen, was es eine Spur zäh machte. Man merkte die Länge des Matches halt schon ein bisschen. Dennoch natürlich klasse und 9 Punkte absolut wert."

[7.0] "Didn't enjoy this match as much as I thought I would. Enjoyed their match at WrestleMania X much more. Not a lot of tension built throughout the match, just lots of escape attempts."

[10.0] "Bockstarke Käfigschlacht, welche zeigt, warum die beiden Hart-Brüder zu meinen Lieblingswrestlern gehören. Sehr nett anzusehen, wie sie ihre jeweiligen gegenseitigen Fluchtversuche verhindern und sich dabei teils sehr hart von den Seilen zurück in den Ring werfen. Auch der Aftermath sehr nett gemacht. Volle Punktzahl von mir!"

[6.0] "This was about as good as an early-90s WWF-style cage match could be, although it went about 10:00 too long; the elimination of pinfalls or submissions meant that climbing and pulling down took the place of near-falls and near-submissions, and that got old after a while. There are only so many ways you can almost climb out and then get pulled back in. Once you've seen them all, repetition sets in, and that's a killer for enjoyment."

[8.0] "This match was a race to the outside, as both brothers took every opportunity they could to leave the cage. Near the end of the bout, Bret hits an awe-inspiring superplex to Owen which puts them both out of commission. Owen eventually gets up, pulls an escaping Bret to the center of the ring and locks in the sharpshooter, threatening to break his legs. The move quickly gets reversed by the Hitman and the brawl continues. The match ends with both brothers on the outside, with Bret finally managing to hit the floor. An incapacitated Owen is left hanging from the cage by his leg. Great stuff. Unfortunately, this match suffers from the same symptoms of nearly every traditional cage match. The "complete a move, rush to the cage" sequences got repetitive after the fifteen minute mark, and the selling wasn't the best. I give both men props for this one though. It's difficult to create a well-executed cage match. If it were shortened by five minutes or so, had a bit more variety, and was sold better, this would've been one of the all-time greats. ****1/4"

[9.0] "This is definitely a great match, though it's not 5 star in my book as it's a little too long and, yes, they go for the escape a little too much. Still, you've got two all time greats and they still have amazing chemistry, so you can't really go too wrong."

[9.0] "The history going into this match, and the story behind it, are a big factor in why the match stands as a classic. The rivalry between the two brothers had been developing since the previous year? s Survivor Series, and reached a fever pitch when Owen had got the shock win over Bret at WrestleMania 5 months earlier, going from there on a career ascent that put him here in the World Title picture. And here it feels like a big culmination, with the Hart family gathered at ringside to milk out maximum drama and gravitas. Not that the match itself was any slouch. It was a bit jarring at first how the focus was less on inflicting punishment on each other than just on escaping, with the punishment coming as a consequence of that. But once I got into this more old-school rhythm it became gripping viewing, with some heart-stopping false finishes. Owen was like the Terminator in this match, where on more than one occasion I thought Bret was ready to win when Owen would leap across the ring to grab him by the hair and drag him back in. This really should have been a star-cementing turn for Owen that should have seen him as World Champ by Survivor Series, but for whatever reason things never worked out that way."

[9.0] "Der Käfig klappert und ist gefühlt nur halb so hoch wie heutzutage. Ich mag die Tür in Steel Cage-Matches nicht, aber hier machen das die Brüder durchaus gut. Zwar mit dem typischem unlogischen Pacing in Bezug auf die Fluchtmöglichkeiten, aber sogar das wird hier gut verkauft. Allgemein bauen sie rund um die Fluchtversuche eine gute Psychologie auf. Leider fehlt mir durch das heutige Wissen, dass Owen nie World Champ war, die Spannung aber, aber der Aufbau ist so gut, dass ich den Fakt doch nochmal kurz hier im Profil nachschauen musste. Intensives Duell mit einem wirklich guten Spannungspacing, dass sich immer sehr real anfühlt und nichts von den heutigen Slow-Mo-Duellen hat. So hat sogar der Superplex einen besonderen Impact. Schlussphase ist auch gut aufgebaut und das Finish ist wirklich Klasse gemacht. Insgesamt etwas zu wenig Wrestling, aber dafür das Gimmick nahezu perfekt ausgenutzt. (****3/4)"

[4.0] "One of the great conceits of being a wrestling fan is the suspension of disbelief. Even though you know what you are watching is predetermined (to a large degree), you accept this with the trade-off that you expect the participants, to the best of their ability, to create a world for you to live in that you can believe as real, despite that conceit. It's not dissimilar from watching a film--you know there are actors being given specific direction under very specific and "fake" circumstances, but if done correctly, the viewer will believe it is real and go along for the ride. That's the whole point! This match, for all of its positive qualities, does not make me suspend my disbelief. I do not believe, at any point, that either wrestler is actually attempting to win this match. Everything is a setup for the next spot or set of moves. There is not a single point that I think one wrestler is committed to winning the match. It looks and feels fake. And that's a damn shame, because there are two of the greatest wrestlers ever; wrestlers that I have watched face each other in one of my favorite matches of all-time. I know what they are capable of! And this is just very poor. Part of it is the gimmick of the match. But knowing the talent these two possess, I expected a lot more. My heart gives this a * or so, but my brain knows there is actually some good action, so I am bumping it up to a **, despite my philosophical qualms. But I hate this match, and I never want to watch it again."

[9.0] "Dies ist das beste Match des Abends und das wohl beste Cagematch der Geschichte. Bret und Owen zeigen, was sie zusammen auf die Beine stellen können. Die Intensität ist großartig und ein Titelgewinn Owens scheint zumindest möglich. Das Match startet mit dem Rahmen der Familien-Fehde. Dann beginnt die schnelle Startphase im Käfig. Besonders gut gelungen scheint mir der mehrfache Fluchtversuch Owens durch die Tür. Dies ist einfach zwingend logisch gebookt. Immer wieder kommt es zu schnellen und teils überraschenden und erstaunlich weit geführten Fluchtversuchen, welche die Spannung dauerhaft hoch halten. Zwischendurch gibts schönes technisches Wrestling eingestreut. Richtig intensiv wird es zur Mitte des Matches, wenn beide erst ihre Käfigrand-Akrobatik ohne Netz und doppelten Boden exerzieren und dann Spannung an der Tür aufkommen lassen. Einzige Schwäche dieses tollen Klassiker liegt in der Cagematch-Stipulation begründet. Jedes einzelne Match dieser Gattung krankt meiner Meinung nach an selbst fürs Wrestling überdurchschnittlicher Unlogik. Hauptproblem ist die Tatsache, dass man den Käfig durch die Tür verlassen KANN, dies aber viel zu oft nicht tut. Auch ein so hochklassiges und logisches Cagematch wie dieses sieht immer wieder Sequenzen, in denen ein Teilnehmer den Käfig durch die Tür hätte einfach verlassen können. Auch wenn dieser Fakt für mich knapp die Höchstwertung versagt, lässt sich festhalten, dass hier ein absoluter Klassiker vorliegt, den man gesehen haben muss. Tolle Partie, super Spannung, super Chemie, technisch hochwertig und eine heiße Crowd."

[6.0] "You know, sometimes the hype does not live up to the experience. This is the best match the two have ever had? I don't agree. Its certainly a well crafted piece of art and I won't dispute anyone who'd consider this their best effort but for me its just not as clever as their Mania encounter. If there is something endearing about this though its how damned close the Hart Bros made this look, and I will say the ending here tops the ending to their other undeniable classic encounter. They used the cage well, probably better then anyone (not including HiaC encounters) but that being said it just didn't feel as special to me as it felt to most others. Maybe it was a bit too novel for my taste? *** 3/4"

[10.0] "I was afraid that my opinion on this would drop quite a bit after a re-watch, but I am happy to say that this is still an absolute classic in my eyes! Sure, they tried to escape from the Cage a lot of times, and that has annoyed lots of people, but I thought it was pretty fantastic, as it put over the championship as something that both men truly want. When they were not trying to escape from the Cage, they displayed their beautiful chemistry & their fantastic looking offense. All-time great Steel Cage match. ****3/4"

[9.0] "I can't go higher on this. their WM XX match was way better. amazing storytelling, amazing heat, amazing heel/face work, but lacks on wrestling or mat wrestling. it should have more wrestling. **** 1/4"

Es war an Spannung kaum zu überbieten und diese Spannung hat sich vom Anfang bis zum Ende durchgezogen! 30 Minuten Spannung, jeder hätte jederzeit den Käfig verlassen können! Sehr Sehr gut ich persönlich fande aber das Match von Wrestlemania 10 besser. **** 1/2"

[10.0] "This is unbelievable, more than 30 minutes of great action and a lot of innovation for the Steel Cage match. Who criticizes it is used to faster matches of the present day, but this was something really new (just confront it with Hogan vs Bundy or one other previous Cage match). Also the many escape attempts are exciting and makes the match even more unpredictable. Like the Ladder match of Wrestlemania X, this is the perfect match because it influenced Wrestling. *****"

[9.0] "Auch nach 22 Jahren ist es immer noch eines der besten, wenn nicht sogar das beste Steel Cage Match aller Zeiten. Bret und Owen zeigen hier wunderbar mit welchen psychologischen und einfachen Mitteln man hier arbeiten muss, um ein realistisches, sicheres und spannendes Steel Cage Match zu worken. Bret Hart versuchte sehr oft aus dem Käfig auszubrechen, was nicht nur unglaublich viel Sinn machte, sondern auch wunderbar zur Story gepasst hat. Owen hingegen versuchte in erster Linie Bret Schaden zuzufügen und das Match zu gewinnen schien für ihn teilweise nur zweitrangig zu sein. Die Endphase war richtig dramatisch und das Finish großartig gemacht. Mein einziger Kritikpunkt an diesem Match ist, dass in den ersten 15 Minuten viel zu wenig passiert, weshalb ich dieses Match schlussendlich etwas hinter ihrem WM10 Opener sehe. Trotzdem bleibt am Schluss ein einzigartiges Match im Wrestling-Universum, das die Höchstbewertung damals ohne Zweifel verdient hat. **** 1/4 (2)"

[10.0] "Vielleicht das beste Cage Match in der Wrestlinggeschichte. Auch ein großer Kontrast zum Wrestlemania Match der beiden. Dieses Mal starten die Brüder mit einem Brawl. Was dieses Cage Match jedoch von den meisten anderen unterscheidet, ist der Fokus auf das unglaubliche Drama und die Spannung in Bezug auf die Flucht-aus-dem-Käfig-Regel, statt auf eine blutige Klopperei. Kaum ein Cage Match hatte jemals solch dramatische Near-Escape-Momente wie dieses. Mehrmals muss der eine Hart den anderen wortwörtlich an den Haaren zurück in den Ring ziehen um eine Flucht zu verhindern. Auch die Momente oben an der Käfigwand sind toll, mit Brets unglaublichem Superplex als Highlight. Natürlich braucht ein Bret vs Owen Match auch ein Sharpshooter-Duell. Am Ende dann hängen beide plötzlich außen an der Käfigwand, und Bret kann Owen mit einer letzten Anstrengung so gegen den Käfig rammen, dass Owens Beine durch das Gitter rutschen und er kopfüber am Käfig hängt, während Bret mit einem letzten Satz den Hallenboden erreicht und seinen Titel verteidigt. Die folgende Siegesfeier wird jedoch von Jim Neidhart verhindert, der aus dem Publikum heraus erst den Bulldog in der ersten Reihe ausschaltet, und dann auf Bret losgeht. Gemeinsam mit Owen, schiebt er Bret zurück in den Ring, wo die beiden weiter auf ihn losgehen. Die restlichen Hart-Brüder und Daveyboy fangen daraufhin an den Käfig an verschiedenen Stellen zu erklimmen, und plötzlich müssen Owen und Jim den Ring wie eine Burg verteidigen und die Angreifer abwehren bevor sie den Käfig erklimmen können. Das geht ein paar Momente lang gut, aber schließlich schafft es Daveyboy nach oben und die beiden schwarzen Schafe der Familie ergreifen die Flucht. *****"

[5.0] "This was one of the most disappointing matches i've ever seen. I mean like most wrestling fans I am a massive fan of both Bret & Owen and to see this match was just such a let down. How has this got over 5? Never mind over 9."

[10.0] "Wenn ich 22 Jahre später an die besten Matches denke ich je gesehen habe komme ich nicht an diesem Klassiker vorbei. Und wenn ich an die besten Cage-Matches denke ist dieses das erste was mir einfällt. Das sagt schon alles. Die Bruderfehde fand beim Summerslam ihren Höhepunkt, die Vorgeschichte war sehr gut. Bret war zwar zweifacher Champion, Owen war aber durch den Sieg beim King of the Ring und den Erfolg über seinen Bruder bei Wrestlemania nun wirklich in eine neue Sphäre vorgestoßen und daher als starker Gegner absolut glaubwürdig. Das Match bot spektakuläre Action, Verbissenheit und harte Aktionen bei denen einem schon vom Zuschauen die Knochen schmerzen. Die Attacken nach Matchende waren zudem ein guter Ansatz für das Comeback des British Bulldog. Daher ist dieses Match für mich ganz klar das beste Match 1994."

[10.0] "This is fantastic. Bret and Owen put on another classic and this time in a steelcage. Btoh guys told the story well of getting out of the cage as soon as possible to get this over with and leave with the title. Owen was a fantastic heel here. *****"

[10.0] "Natürlich ein Klassiker in der Geschichte der Käfigmatches - besonders die Aktionen vom obersten Seil und die gnadenlosen Konter machten die Angelegenheit extrem spannend. Zudem ist Owen bis zu diesem Punkt so sehr gepusht, dass ein Titelwechsel nicht unrealistisch erscheint. Die Einarbeitung der Familienmitglieder, Daveys Rückkehr und der After-Match Brawl sind die Sahnehaube eines Matches, dass zwingendermassen den Main-Event hätte darstellen müssen. Im Finish dem Ramon/HBK Match von WMX nicht unähnlich, aber trotz allem ein gnadenloses Must-See, da es bis heute eines der besten WWE Cagematches aller Zeiten bleibt."

[10.0] "Ein unglaublich starkes Match der beiden Hart-Brüder. Ein technisch hochklassiges Match mit tollen Kontern und starken Aktionen. Dazu ist es unglaublich spannend, immer wieder sind beide kurz davor den Käfig verlassen zu können. Das Finish hat auch perfekt gepasst, genauso der Brawl der ganzen Harts danach. Ganz große Klasse was man hier geschaffen und hätte eigentlich der Main Event bei diesem Summerslam sein müssen."

[5.0] "So far, this is the worse 'top rated' match I have seen. 30 minutes of two guys taking turns in moving lightning fast to the top of the cage (or to the cage door) and then slowing to a complete halt while they wait for the other to come and very slowly (yet somehow successfully) pull them back in. This got really repetitive and boring, and was very difficult to enjoy. The way one wrestler would go from lying on the ground dazed and in pain to up on their feet and right up the top of the cage or right by the cage door trying to pull the other back in within only a split second was ridiculous. It was very jarring and far too convenient. There were plenty of times when either wrestler could feasibly just take one small step down from the outside of the cage wall and win the match, but never took it. The actual wrestling was very minimal, of course, yet the crowd somehow still popped very loudly at all these monotonous cage-escape spots. Maybe this was one of those matches where you have to understand the historical significance or the deep story behind it to really appreciate it, but for me with no knowledge of any backstory I was very unimpressed, especially given how people rave about it. The finish was cool, at least. **3/4."

[7.0] "I gave this match *** 1/2 stars out of 5 and felt like it suffered from being a little too long. Good cage match, but I would not call it perfect and give it 5 stars."

[10.0] "Easily one of the best cage matches of all time. The storyline fitted a cage match to a tee and the Hart brothers had the technical ability to pull it off. The match want about beating each other up as much as it was who was better, who could get out of the cage first. The beats own at the end helped really employ the storyline which led to the need for the match in the first place."

[10.0] "This is what I would call the GREATEST CAGE Match of ALL-TIME. That's no exaggeration either as these two put on another clinic and to be quite honest I think they had two of the best matches of 1994. Their match at WM X was AWESOME but I felt that this was much better due to the build leading up to the match and the match itself had me on the edge of my seat for the entire duration of the match. I was convinced half-way through that Owen would capture the title but that was just not to be as Bret would persevere and retain the championship by hanging his brother out to dry... pun intended as Bret jumps down from the cage as Owen's leg got caught and he was left hanging. During the match though, these two went all out in wanting to knock the other one out in order to successfully escape the cage. I did like how the story was told here and there was some amazing sequences and well you won't find a better Steel Cage Match than this.... trust me on that one. *****"

[10.0] "Eines der besten Cage bzw. SummerSlam Matches aller Zeiten. Es war von Anfang an klar, dass man kein Technikfeuerwerk erwarten konnte. Sicher kann man darüber diskutieren dass man nicht durch Pinfall oder Submission gewinnen konnte und dadurch alle wann mal einer versuchte aus dem Käfig zu entkommen. Es gab auch für damalige Zeiten den ein oder anderen harten Move, z. B. den Superplex von Bret gegen Owen. Der Sieg Brets geht für mich vollkommen in Ordnung, da ein World Championship Run Owens damals zu früh gewesen wäre. (5*)"

[10.0] "The best match in careers of both wrestlers, the fight which has surpassed them on WrestleMania X. The extremely long, hardened fight of two brothers to the last. The 2nd best match of 1994 after Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels ladder match on WrestleMania. My rating: ****3/4."

[10.0] "Technisch vom feinsten und dazu bis zur aller letzten Sekunde extrem spannend. Selten habe ich vor lauter Spannung so mitgefiebert. Das einzige was fehlte, waren ein paar mehr waghalsige Aktionen vom Stahlkäfig aus. Dennoch haben wir es hier mit einem extrem temporeichen und spannenden Kampf zu tun, den sich jeder Fan angucken sollte. Für mich ist dieses Match sogar einen Ticken besser als das Aufeinandertreffen bei WrestleMania 10. Auch die Storyline rund um die Fehde der Hart-Brüder nimmt am Ende hier ihren Höhepunkt. Für mich einer der besten Kämpfe aller Zeiten!"

[10.0] "Ohh hell yes. One of the greatest cage matches ever This match is just nonstop action as both brothers were this close to escaping the cage. The crowd was super into it as they really couldn't tell who was going to win because both men at various times in the match were inches away from escaping. The ending is too awesome as they fight outside the cage and the crowd is literally on the edge of their seats wondering who's going to drop down first and it winds up being Bret after Owen's leg gets caught in the cage and he hangs upside down. What a classic match *****"

[10.0] "Just when you think this amazing sibling feud in 1994 between Bret Hart and Owen Hart couldn't get any better after Wrestlemania X, their rivalry/feud hits its peak by ending up in such an amazing steel cage match for the WWF title on another big stage at Summerslam! Watching this steel cage match today instantly takes me back to when I was a little kid watching this match and enjoying the hell out of seeing my 2 favorite brothers in wrestling put on such an amazing performance and tell a wrestling story like no other! It also included an epic aftermath too involving Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, The British Bulldog, and the rest of the Hart brothers symbolizing that the feud still continues after this match which was awesome as hell! Whether you like this match more or less than their Wrestlemania match or enjoy both those matches just as much, of course that's up to you to decide, but I still love this match more cause of how much it meant to me when I was little and how much it still means to me to this day!"

[8.0] "Very realistic cage match in that both tried at all time to escape the cage. It is realistic, but that doesn't mean entertaining - at times I was tired of the numerous unsuccessful escapes. At certain times you can also see, that Bret seem really afraid of heights, he always falls very gingerly."

[10.0] "Absolut sensationelles Match! Von Anfang bis Ende ist das Match super spannend. Man hat eigentlich das Gefühl das Match ist ein einziges 30 minütiges Finish. Beide haben unzählige Möglichkeiten den Käfig zu verlassen und das von der ersten Sekunde an. Das Publikum rastet fast ohne Pause völlig aus. Sagenhaft! Die beiden haben mit diesem Match einen Standard für Käfig-Matches gesetzt dem meines Wissens keiner mehr erreicht hat. Das Match ist bei einer Skala von 0 bis 10 eine klare 11! Es ist zwar technisch nicht ganz so stark wie ihr Wrestlemania-Match, aber dafür ist es in Sachen Spannung und Intensität eigentlich nicht zu toppen."

[10.0] "Eines der besten und vor allem glaubwürdigsten Matches aller Zeiten. Die Einbeziehung des Käfigs, das Timing, der Hintergrund, die Hart-Familie um den Ring. Hier stimmte einfach von vorne bis hinten alles bis ins letzte Detail. Dazu kommen natürlich noch die zwei Ausnahmeathleten, die das Match an sich bestreiten und fertig ist eines der besten Matches alles Zeiten. Zehn von Zehn."

[10.0] "Das beste Steel Cage-Match, das es je gegeben hat! Beide liefern hier ein unglaublich spannendes Match, mit vielen harten Bumps und unzähligen Nearfalls ab. Hinzu kommt noch, dass die Hart-Familie am Ring Platz genommen hat. Hier stimmt einfach alles. *****"

[9.0] "Trotz der Länge ein sehr gutes Steel Cage Match, die beiden gehen sehr verbissen zur Sache und es gibt sehr viele gute d. h. glaubwürdige Fluchtversuche aus dem Käfig zu sehen."

[8.0] "Eines der besten Cage Matches. Spannend war es schon , aber die Stipulation ist sowas von blöde. Wer wird denn ernsthaft über den Käfig fliehen wollen, wenn er auch durch die Tür gehen kann? Völliger Blödsinn, aber das ist ein allgemeines Cagematch-Problem."

[10.0] "Eines der besten Cage Matches die ich gesehen hab. Wahnsinnig spannend und aufgrund der vielen Fluchtversuche und der rechtzeitigen Breaks durch den anderen wurde das Spannungslevel auch konstant hochgehalten. Bret und Owen haben das bestmöglichste aus der Stipulation herausgeholt, wir haben schöne Aktionen und viele Führungswechsel gesehen und das Finish und der Beatdown von Neidhart und Owen gegen Bret war klasse. Auf jeden Fall gibt es hier 10 Punkte!"

[10.0] "Auf jeden Fall ein 5 Sterne Match genau so wie das Erste Match von Wrestle Mania. Wobei dies natürlich durch die Stipulation und Match art ein Wenig besser ist."

[10.0] "Fünf Sterne, garkeine Frage. 90% der anderen Cagematches krankten an der Glaubwürdigkeit. Ein durchtrainierter Athlet braucht keine halbe Stunde um über die Wand zu klettern und ein vernunftbegabter Mensch nutzt jede Gelegenheit zum Sieg. Bei diesem Match hier gings glaubwürdiger denn je zur Sache, saustark schon der Beginn als Owen auf Bret einschlägt und dabei in Richtung seiner Eltern schreit. Im Verlaufe des Matches gab es viele starke Aktionen und immer wieder diese außergewöhlich schnellen Ausbruchsversuche. Die beiden flitzten so schnell zur Tür, dass man jedes Mal aufschreckte, bis in letzter Sekunde der jeweilige Kontrahent das Bein erwischt. Je länger es weiterging, je mehr die beiden aufeinander einprügelten, desto länger brauchten die beiden auch für die Escapes, bis letztendlich dieses tolle Finish kam. Beide auf der anderen Seite, irgendetwas musste passieren und die Situtation wurde zugunsten des Champs gut gelöst. Die Crowd tat ihr übriges und war gut heiß drauf. Was nach dem Match folgte war einer der Besten Heel-Aktionen überhaupt, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem sich Neidhart und Owen zurückzogen, um dann Backstage noch eine Tirade abzufeuern. Meisterhaft !"

[10.0] "Für mich war's das beste Cagematch aller Zeiten. Das Match hat genügend Zeit bekommen, die Fluchtversuche waren allesamt sehr glaubwürdig, die Crowd war richt "heiß" und das Finish war richtig, richtig gut. Merkwürdig ist allerdings, dass dieses Match nicht der Main Event vom SS war."

[10.0] "Dies ist ebenfalls eines der fünf besten Matches meines bisherigen Lebens."

[10.0] "Hier hat einfach alles gestimmt. Die Fans gingen mit und es wurde mit den geteilten Harts im Publikum und den zahlreichen near escapes eine großartige Spannung geschürt. Ein Lehrstück dafür, wie man im Ring und vor allem in einem Käfig eine spannende Geschichte erzählt. Für mich anders aber genau so gut wie das frühere Aufeinandertreffen bei Wrestlemania."

[10.0] "Sicherlich das beste Match seiner Art. Wüsste nicht, was man noch bieten könnte um dieses Match zu steigern."

[10.0] "Mein absolutes Lieblings-Match. Ich schaue es mir selbst heute immer wieder gerne an und es wird einfach nicht langweilig."

[10.0] "Kurz und knapp: Auch heute noch das beste Cagematch und ich bezweifel ob sich daran noch jemals etwas ändern wird. Was Bret und Owen da abgeliefert haben ist einfach fantastisch und unterstreicht die Klasse dieser beiden Legenden. Ganz eindeutig: *****"

[10.0] "Bis heute mein Lieblings Steel Cage Match. Hier bekommt man wirklich den Eindruck das die beiden Akteure die ganze Zeit versuchen aus dem Käfig zu fliehen, was ich bei allen anderen Steel Cage Matches so noch nicht gesehen habe. Dadurch wird die Spannung auf den Höhepunkt getrieben. Natürlich gibt es auch reichlich spektakuläre Aktionen, welche einen den Atem rauben."

[10.0] "Spannendes und sehr verbissenes Match mit einer großartigen Crowd, die wirklich ununterbrochen jubelt. Dazu kommt die ständige Dramatik bei den Fluchtversuchen aus dem Käfig. Die Stipulation klasse genutzt! Das Finish war auch echt ordentlich!"

[10.0] "Für mich einer der glaubwürdigsten Cagematches, die es gibt ! Glaubwürdig deshalb, weil man sehr oft versuchte aus dem Käfig zu entkommen, fast nach jedem Move nutzte einer von Beiden die Chance zur Flucht und gerade das ist ja Sinn dieser Matchart. Owen agiert sehr verbissen und man merkt ihm förmlich an, dass er seinen Bruder "hasst". Der jüngere Bruder überzeugt dann auch durch eine gewisse Geschwindigkeit, die er bei den Fluchtversuchen an den Tag legt. Die Crowd ist sehr laut und fiebert bei jeder kleinen Aktionen mit. Vielleicht hätte das Match 5 Minuten kürzer sein können, vielleicht hätte Bret es lassen sollen, bei einem Zusammenstoß mit dem Käfig, sein Bein nur für eine folgende Sequenz zu sellen, anstatt dies das restliche Match über zu tun... aber nichtsdestotrotz haben wir hier ein Match, dass der Stipulation mehr als gerecht wird und dazu noch eine gehörige Portion Dramatik !"

[10.0] "Intensives und hochspannendes Cage Match. Ob es das beste seiner Art ist, sei mal dahingestellt, es ist aber auf jeden Fall erstklassig. Sicherlich kann es auf den ein oder anderen inzwischen eintönig wirken, wenn am Ende nur noch Fluchtversuche und deren knappe Verhinderung geschehen, aber dramaturgisch ist das einfach nur erste Sahne."

[10.0] "Ein wahres Highlight unter den Cagematches, vor allem geprägt durch die unzähligen Spots bei denen ein Hart den anderen kurz vorm Entkommen gerade noch aufhalten kann. Technische Finesse gab es hier eher weniger, dafür aber den Höhepunkt der hasserfüllten Bruderfehde mit genialem Finish."

[10.0] "Ein wirklich großartiges Steel Cage Match von Bret und Owen, das mir persönlich sogar noch ein wenig besser gefällt als ihr fantastischer Wrestlemania-Opener. Bis heute ist mir völlig unverständlich, warum der Undertaker/Undertaker-Schwachsinn den Main Event dieses SummerSlams bildete und nicht das Bruderduell im Käfig."

[10.0] "Ein Traum dieses Match. Spannend von vorne bis hinten!"

[10.0] "Schlicht und einfach das beste Cage Match aller Zeiten. Das Highlight in einer der besten WWE Fehden überhaupt!"

[9.0] "Sehr starkes Cagematch. Ich bin überhaupt kein Freund dieses Gimmicks, da es nahezu immer absolut unrealistisch wirkt. Das hier war allerdings das einzige seiner Art was mich wirklich begeistern konnte und in Erinnerung geblieben ist. Die sehr starke Stimmung in der Halle tut ihr übriges. Muss man mal gesehen haben."

[10.0] "Ein absolut geniales Cage Match. Zwei klasse Wrestler und eine funktionierende, logische und gute Storyline. So muss Wrestling aussehen."

[8.0] "Ein gutes Cage-Match, mehr allerdings nicht. Ich kann nicht nachvollziehen, dass dieses Match "das beste seiner Art" sein soll. Die letzten knapp 15 Minuten beschäftigen sich ausschließlich damit, dass einer den Käfig verlassen will und der andere ihn daran hindert. Das ist mir etwas zu eintönig, deshalb "nur" eine 8."

[10.0] "Nach Wrestlemania war dies der 2. Grosse Kampf. Alle aus der Familie waren am Ring. British Bulldog feierte sein Comeback. Das Wrestlemania Match stand damals unter einem Schatten, wo bis Wrestlemania 12 auch niemand mehr dran kam. HBK vs Razor Ramon. Ausgeglichene Verhältnisse nach diesem Kampf, denn diesmal hatte Bret(trotz Angina)das bisschen mehr glück."

[9.0] "Jap, dieses Match war durchaus sehr schick. Gefallen hat mir der Aufbau, die Dramaturgie zum Finish hin, die Hintergrundgeschichte und natürlich auch der Suplex. ABER (und hier gilt das gleiche wie für das WM-Leitermatch) der Matchablauf (immer zur Tür springen, wenn der andere gerade nen Scopeslam kassiert hatte) war trotzdem nicht neu. HBK und Bret Hart hatten ein Jahr zuvor ein Match dieser Art und warteten sogar mit dem gleichen Finish auf. HB"

[10.0] "Geniales Match, mir fällt auch spontan kein besseres (WWE) Cagematch ein, außer vielleicht Angle vs. Benoit. Es war einfach, vor allem durch die emotionale Fehde, sehr intensiv und vor allem spannend. Da hat, finde ich, einfach alles gepasst. Das macht es zu einem, fast, perfekten Match. ****3/4"

[10.0] "Natürlich kann man das Steel Cage Match nicht ganz mit denen von heute vergleichen. Inzwischen gab es schon noch ein paar bessere, aber damals stellte es fast alles bisher Gesehene in den Schatten und das Match wird für mich immer ein Klassiker und vielleicht sogar mein persönliches Lieblings- Steel Cage Match bleiben! Auch das ganze Drumherum war einfach nur göttlich!"

[8.0] "Zur damaligen Zeit ein Klassiker, verglichen mit heutigen Cagematches aber nur noch aufgrund der Fehde resp. der Protagonisten ein Meilenstein. Die Spannung war hervorragend aufgebaut, die Abneigung der beiden stets spürbar. Aber mir fehlte im Nachhinein das besondere - kein Holy-Shit-Moment oder eine neue Aktion. Dafür aber ein Finish, das niemand mit Herzproblemen gucken sollte."

[10.0] "Das beste und spannendste Steel Cage Match überhaupt. Das Finish ist sensationell und man kann sich dieses Match nicht oft genug anschauen. Wunderbar."

[10.0] "An Spannung und Dramatik kaum zu überbieten! Beginnt flüssig, die Heel/Face-Rollen sind klar verteilt und das merkt man auch im Match! Klasse Aktionen sowohl am Boden als auch am bzw. auf dem Käfigrand! Gutes Finish, einfach klasse!"

[10.0] "Enorm spannendes Match mit der passenden Länge. Auch die zuschauenden Protagonisten außerhalb des Käfigs verleihen dem Match einen eigenen Flair. Für mich persönlich eines der besten Matches von Bret Hart überhaupt!"

[10.0] "Habe das Match auf DVD und sehe es mir immer wieder gerne an. Beide haben einen super Tag und verkaufen den hass der zwischen ihnen herscht sehr gut. Spannend bis zum Schluss und mehrere Aktionen vom oberen Käfigrand machen das Macht für jeden Fan von Bret oder Owen zu einem must see."
