130.11.2025sombrizo7.0This was a very good match, built on a simple but effective story: Bobby Roode playing the arrogant, calculating champion, and Roderick Strong fighting with heart, intensity, and something to prove. The in-ring work was clean and physical, with a good rhythm throughout and enough variety in the exchanges to keep the match engaging from start to finish. Strong's offense looked sharp, and he managed to push Roode into deeper territory than usual, making the possibility of an upset feel genuinely believable at times. Roode, on the other hand, leaned fully into his heel tendencies -- slowing the pace when needed, creating openings through opportunism, and selling the frustration of a champion who suddenly realizes the challenger might be better than expected. The finish, with Roode escaping once again through cunning rather than pure dominance, fit the story perfectly. It preserved Strong's credibility while reinforcing Roode's character as a champion who survives rather than overwhelms. A very solid match overall, even if not exceptional -- but certainly good enough to deserve its place in this chapter of Roode's title reign.

825.09.2024Styles6198.0This was a great match. Prior to this match, we got a few video packages detailing Roderick Strong's backstory, including a story about his mother. This helped get Strong over in NXT as a babyface, with the idea that he would be over enough to challenge Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship. It clearly worked, and we got a great wrestling match with Strong's mom and fiance Marina Shafir sitting in the crowd. Roode got good heat whenever he would get under their skin, whether he mocked them directly or talked trash to Strong right in front of them. There was a great false finish in which Strong hit the End of Heartache on Roode, but Roode's foot was under the ropes as the referee hit the 3 count. Roddy thought he won title until the referee told him otherwise, and Roode took advantage to attack him and hit the Glorious DDT on the floor and then again in the ring for the win. They told a great story here, and if it wasn't for Drew McIntyre's WWE return, I think we would have gotten a rematch with Strong winning the NXT Championship at Takeover Brooklyn III. ****

1119.06.2024JoeyBingBong9.0I adore this match, comfortably Roode's NXT best in my view. It's also a career-best performance for that matter, selling at an astonishing level and exuding villainy throughout. Strong's brilliance is far more typical, bringing that usual intensity from the bell and for one night, thriving as the underdog babyface. In NXT, he wasn't a long term fit for that role but it totally worked against Roode, playing his best Ric Flair cover before, during and after the bout. Particularly at Full Sail, this has such a throwback feel, with the NWA World's Champion stopping through the territory's TV studio against a local hero. It's wrestled that way too, showcasing all of Roode's in-ring strengths while seamlessly trimming the fat. That's the power of Roddy Strong, a machine built for graps. ****1/4

1313.05.2024HugoRoids9.0Yet another Roode defense I consider underrated. Bobby and Roddy both meshed together well and had good chemistry. The action was a much faster pace than Bobbys other defenses and I attribute a lot of that to Bobby. He was much more aggressive in this match and was less focused on playing it safe. Roderick was able to go even faster because of the super emotionally charged and amazing storyline going in with the Rough Upbringing Workhorse vs. Heel Narcissist dynamic which paid off. They gave it their all to make this super intense and physical including some nasty bumps like the Glorious DDT on the outside and the stair leg crush. The ending also really played into the story perfectly with Roddy seemingly getting the win but the ref restarts the match because Bobbys leg was under the rope, leading to a heartbreaking defeat for Strong in front of his family. The only negatives here are that there were some slight slow patches and that it felt like more of a takeover main event and with a story this good, it should have been one.

1814.09.20222violent4tv9.0Right from the start you could see Roode's superior attitude and the harsh words he spoke to Roddy, and that's where the latter's motivation came from, which may have been lacking in their previous NXT title match. Strong looks to execute his backbreakers, and Roode looks to avoid them, but even so he still takes them. Roode is still the one in control of the match though, and it shows when he goes to the apron and systematically attacks Strong's back. First into a ring post, then into the steps, then with a Spinebuster outside the ring. Back in the ring, both men begin to feel the marks left on their backs by the maneuvers they have executed. A spot build follows where Strong executes an Angle Slam, but not on the first attempt. Even though Roddy failed to keep Roode down for three seconds, the former NXT Champion is visibly hurt, the offensive maneuvers no longer serve to build a bigger spot, but only to keep Roddy away as he moves into control and looks to execute a Superplex. Two very good near falls, coming after two carefully constructed spots by Roode and Strong. Roode unexpectedly manages to execute his finishing maneuver, but the count stops when Strong puts his foot on the bottom rope, a nice throwback to their previous match. After the failed pin, Roode starts the trash talk again, which awakens the more aggressive side of Roderick Strong. From here the match goes one way, and Strong sends him back to Smackdown after two End of Heartache and a kiss goodbye. A simple booking match, but exceptional in execution.

4109.12.2017arrancar7.0Probably Roode's best match thus far in his WWE run. I can't tell if it was just that he works better with Roddy than with other NXT wrestlers, but for whatever reason Roode actually looked quite good in control during this match. He was aggressive and highlighted his power well, and his arrogance added to his character without constantly becoming a crutch for him to fall back on (though he did do a few too many Glorious taunts as usual). The story was that Roode wasn't taking Roddy seriously, but Roddy fought valiantly and pushed Roode to his limit. Roode worked over Roddy's leg while Roddy worked over Roode's back with his trademark offence. Roddy sold his leg very well, constantly limping and grimacing in pain as he moved around and executed his leg-based offence. Roode sold his back quite well also. Both of these injuries came in to play in the latter half of the match as they took their toll on the wrestlers by slowing them down when going for pins and when generally trying to execute their offence. Roddy's family did well to add to the drama of Roddy's plight, which is a nice change from ringside families who just don't take things seriously or overact. Roddy hit a great comeback combo and there was a great false finish with a worked botched-3 count from the ref. Roddy having an emotional celebration with his family before finding out the match was actually to be continued was quite devastating to watch. Strong drama and nice in-ring work. ***1/4

6020.07.2017Jobbs9.0I thought this was a fantastic match and both men gave great performances as well. Roode worked over the left leg of Strong quite well and the selling of the work by Roddy was even better as it did manage to have an effect on his offense. The story along with the psychology was great in making the match and found the finish to be excellent as well. Definitely would've preferred this to be the Takeover Brooklyn main event over Roode vs McIntyre. ****1/4

6420.07.2017NastyYaffa8.0The build up to this was sooo good. Roddy gave a really good sympathetic babyface performance & Roode was really good going against that. The leg work was good & Roddy sold it well. The foot-under-the-rope false finish was done super well & the stretch after that was just great. Really good match. Really should've been the Takeover Brooklyn main event. ***3/4

6820.07.2017OneOfTheBeatles8.0It is another very good story-building limb-working match from Roode's NXT Championship run. It had its negative points like some sloppiness with the 'close to the ropes' pins and inconsistency of Roderick's selling (which was still amazing but not perfect). They were able to get tired crowd completely invested in what they were doing pretty quickly and kept their interest till the finish. The finish itself takes a point from the match in a vacuum but it is really great at building the feud. I liked it.
6919.07.2017TooSweetPhil6.0ME ist für mich wieder das typische WWE Booking. "Heel-zieht-Heat-wenn-er-Face-in-seiner-Hometown-oder-vor-seiner-Familie-besiegt".
