Even something as silly as wrestling needs internal logic to be adhered to so that you can suspend your disbelief. But rick knox is a useless ref anyway. This puts me in mind of a classic Nitro where they would just throw a bunch of cruiserweights out there and they'd go ballistic, showing off amazing stuff. That kind of match is more common now than it was then, but done well it is still incredible, and I think you only had to check the crowd reaction to confirm that this one was done very well indeed. There were a few moments where I rolled my eyes a bit, a lot of "we're so even! " spots and Pentagon mucking around with his dumb glove, but generally I think they walked the line just right so I can't take much away from the match. It was just plain exciting and fun to watch, with Vikingo and Dante being the standouts to me. Here's hoping we see a singles match between those two in 2024. |

On the other hand, they had a lot of indulgently off-putting "LOOK HOW COOL WE ARE" standoff/mirror spots, almost no effort to hide the cooperation required for their more complex spots, and they ultimately went really overkill with their many big spots one after the other. This is all the AEW special, so it was to be expected, and their athleticism was at least still impressive enough to make some of their work entertaining, but it annoys me a lot when imagining how great these athletically marvellous matches could be if paired with more appropriate pacing and of course some actual storytelling/characterising. I was close to rating this lower just because of how eye-rolling it was with those various standoff/mirror spots, plus the sloppiness/contrived-ness that came with their more complex spots, but the overall creativity/action on display ultimately made up for that. ***1/4 |
