1304.10.2025BasuraNocturna6.0Hangman's performance is the defined driving force in this one, because Swerve is mainly just there. His offense lacks impact for the most part, he gets into moves in the most ridiculous of ways, he acts like he is in a completely different environment than the one presented. I don't hate Strickland, I just don't care about his wrestling. Mechanically, he rolls to get into moves when it makes no sense, and character wise he presents himself as the coolest guy without showing any vulnerability. Not that engaging. Hangman, on the other hand, is all vulnerability on display all the time. He does go too far into heel territory, but the instinct of being gotten by the crowd is good and the heel performance itself is compelling. Just a shame that in front of him there is no sympathetic figure. Swerve's 450 into the injured arm almost took me single handedly out of the bout. A very weird mix on the whole. The kick out after the crowd shot is too much and nothing of what happens afterwards changes anything. Good performance from the Hanger and a performance from Swerve. Enjoyable, but deeply flawed.

2111.08.2025SiticEye8.0Swerve responding to Hangman targeting his injured hand by targeting and snapping Hangman's whole ass ARM was amazing lmao. Incredible start to their rivalry with their in-ring chemistry in plain sight. These two just flow so well together and you can feel the hatred oozing out of both of them even before ANY houses were invaded! Hangman's heel work was fantastic because it was logical. It wasn't just because Swerve was the crowd favorite, Hangman got more heat because of how he targeted the hand. He'd reverse out of one of Swerve's moves, quickly slam his hand into the ring post, and THEN go for a move of his own. It rocks and works. Critique-wise, they should not have had Swerve hit Hanger with the crown it just made things weird commit to the dynamics! ****1/4

5630.03.2025Windham4ever5.0I don't watch AEW's full shows, but I do get drawn in by some of their top talents and matches. So, I usually catch up on storylines once they wrap up by watching AEW Timeline or fan-made feud recaps before checking out the matches. I don't know much about Swerve Strickland, but he's definitely got charisma. To me, his whole vibe kind of reminds me of Blackbeard from One Piece--very cool. As for Hangman, I've always liked him. That said, their first match didn't quite meet my expectations. Personally, I can't stand pointless brawling outside the ring. After Hangman's first suicide dive, the ringside action felt slow, with no impactful strikes that really affected the match. Swerve's issue, in my opinion, is that some of his moves are overly flashy and rely too much on his opponent selling them. At times, it's hard to tell what part of the body the move is targeting--or even who's actually taking the hit. His execution of certain moves didn't look particularly smooth. Later in the match, there was a striking exchange where his elbow shots didn't have the same impact as Hangman's. However, as the match progressed, the sequencing of moves became a lot more exciting. The targeted offense on the arm was a great setup for countering moves later in the match. As the first match in their feud, it definitely makes me interested in what's next. But if we're judging this match on its own, it was just a solid, standard match. I really hope the upcoming matches take things to another level and give me something to truly enjoy.

6701.03.2025Bayesian8.0This match is a good start to AEW's greatest rivalry, with both men showing flashes of what will eventually become bitter hatred for each other. Swerve's heel work is excellent and made better by how hot the crowd was for him. There were some technical issues like chains of moves that didn't look very smooth, but Hangman sold his right arm and Swerve sold his left hand really well.

7017.02.2025FelipeTalksGraps8.0[4.0*] A very awesome match. Swerve proved he could hang with AEWs Main Eventers and he was even better than Hangman last night in my opinion. This was very well structured, but I can not give it more because of psychology issues. Hanger worked the whole match as a heel with the crowd and then Swerve double-turned at the end?

8203.01.2025uselessdollthing6.0Revisiting this match after the steel cage match. Damn, like this is very much the first meeting between these two but these two have such incredble chemistry together that this still manages to be a really enjoyable one. Nana interference is a bit weird and so is the pacing but this was pretty fun to see, especially with the very unique crowd atmosphere.

8616.12.2024celticinvader9.0Both competitors have moments of arrogance here, but all of Swerves cheating was met with cheers from the home crowd, vs Page getting nothing but boos. The way the story of the match is built by the crowd and then furthered in their future confrontations is so clever. The match itself is also just really strong, nearly went the full five stars at the arm work segment. Star making performance from Swerve, great selling and character work from Page, the perfect start to one of the best modern feuds in wrestling.

9423.10.2024brooksavage200410.0A phenomenal match to kick off what would end up being the best rivalry in AEW and one of, if not, the best rivalries in all of wrestling. Absolutely spectacular in ring action and psychology between them and the crowd was hot throughout it all.
