716.10.2024Laceydj8.0I really enjoyed this match - some great character work by Garcia with his internal struggle between Sports Entertainer and Pure Wrestler, which I think this match played well to. Shibata tried a couple of times to bring the wrestler out of Garcia, but he was dancing til the end!

1622.01.2024Prince Osborne7.0The dynamic of this match bored me in the first half with the generic tone of a respectful champion facing another disrespectful challenger. Still, Garcia's goofiness and Shibata's no-nonsense reply added value to a convincing climax where either of the two could have clinched the victory. Looking back, I still think that Garcia slowly getting the gimmick to where it is has been an interesting watch because the overdose of it irks for a brief period. 3.5 out of 5 stars!

1801.01.2024otoboke5.0Look, I'm not a fan of the ROH Pure title and subsequent matches. The vast majority of them are sluggish, boring and desperate for you to buy into their "realism". I don't watch pro wrestling to watch wrestling matches. Save that for real sport.

4610.08.2023GoldLiger7.0A clash between The Wrestler and The Sports Entertainer but I found this lacked some substance and flow. The dynamic worked well but they just kept going back to that surface level of "Garcia is disrespectful and showy, Shibata is straight-laced". There's some decent little moments and Shibata's offense is always a good time, but this barely felt like a Pure match at times, just a match these two could've had on TV. ***1/4

5203.08.2023CoolKyle5.0This felt like the time to give Garcia the title but keeping it on Shibata is certainly a logical choice as well. I cant imagine Shibata holds the title that much longer, as it isnt like he is anything more than a glorified special attraction. The Pure division isnt much but Ill take Shibata retaining over having to see even more Garcia. The match was fine by the end but it really had no flow in the beginning. The control work was off from both men and it was really all over the place.

5701.08.2023Mizzle Assault Ant9.0The image of Daniel Garcia defiantly dancing in the face of Shibata will stay with me for a long time. Super fun. Obviously the wrestling itself was quite good as well, as you would expect from these two, but Garcia's dedication to the crazy dance rules.

9924.07.2023arrancar7.0Probably the best Garcia match I've ever seen. I've seen all of his top-rated ones, and they're all extremely overrated, but this was genuinely pretty good because he had the perfect partner to allow him to play his usual role far better than he has before. You see, Garcia is a big joke when he tries to play all tough like he's a legit shooter, despite having no intimidation factor, an underwhelming look, and mostly just 'decent' grappling work at best. I actually liked him here, though, since he was paired with a legit shooter (yeah a 4-10 MMA record isn't impressive, but it still reflects more competence than 99.9% of pro-wrestlers, and it also shows he's put in the training regardless of wins) and thus he naturally fell into the role of the slimy, dorky heel, which I've always thought suited him far, far better. It's always a blessing just to see Shibata have wrestling matches in any regard these days, but this was a genuinely good performance from him, proving how he can still go despite his injuries and time off. Watching Shibata, a far more polished and fierce fighter, completely out-grapple Garcia was always really satisfying, and every single one of his techniques was perfectly and realistically executed, which is sadly a rarity these days, even for guys who are considered 'technical'. It goes without saying that his striking and general brawling work were also performed with great technique and physicality. And props to Garcia, who bumped and sold very well for all of Shibata's attacks. I enjoyed Garcia's approach of instead utilising cheap tricks and a more 'grimy' beatdown approach to gain the upper hand, with Shibata selling very well to put it all over. Even Garcia being excessively cocky with his taunting, especially that damn dance, was admittedly pretty entertaining just because of how committed he was to doing the dance as a sign of disrespect to Shibata. It was definitely stupid when he did it while caught in Shibata's rear naked choke, and I did wish he'd tried to tell a story of genuinely enraging Shibata with the dance to the point of Shibata getting overly aggressive and Garcia thus catching him off-guard, but as it was, the dance still entertained me, and I could respect how it fit his warped "sports entertainer" character. The match did get a bit goofy and showcase-y with their rapid trades, no-selling, mirror spots, and their multiple "dual collapse" spots, but their smoothness of their chemistry and their strong respective striking and grappling allowed those exchanges to still be more enjoyable than not. This may not have fully connected with me but it still connected enough for me to consider it to be ultimately pretty good. ***1/4
