There are deathmatches that don't insult their viewers' intelligence, but Ryuij Ito isn't in any of them. Needle through the cheek? No. Hoshino sitting on a table forever despite the match having only just started so Ito can climb to a balcony and hit a dive? No. Grow up, Ito."

[9.0] "This was great. Lots of clever weapons and spots to get around the venue's restrictions. Ito has a mean streak here that I really like. Its almost as if he feels wrestling Hoshino is beneath him and it leads to his downfall. Hoshino for his part is great, and proves he can be more than just a comedy guy (he's very good at that too though. ) Shame his reign wasn't super long and that he's back to mostly comedy spots."

[8.0] "This match was brutal with a capital B. While most BJW deathmatches are light tubes galore, Sumo Hall forbids the use of glass spots, and so most of the match utilized blunt weapons, tables, and the scaffold above the ring. This match shows the versatility and creativity of the deathmatch genre of wrestling through the work of Deathmatch Ace Ryuji Ito. The drama built up so well during this match, and the big spots were unbelievable, particularly the Frankensteiner off the scaffold by Ryuji. Hoshino's victory was shocking and somewhat emotional, especially when he celebrated with his song while bloodied and bruised. The only misstep here is that I think the syringe spot just didn't really fit in with the rest of the match and kinda felt like it was only there to add an extra bit of visceral violence. Still, an awesome deathmatch to cap off a fantastic Ryogokutan show. ****1/4"
