[8.0] "Widely considered the greatest Royal Rumble of all time. And while I think I personally give that nod to 2001, this is absolutely in the top 3 for me as well. It is obviously the Ric Flair show, but Bobby Heenan adds so much to the match's big feel as well. It is a star studded performance. Especially for the early 90's WWF. You have a TON of former world champions part of this, and back then, the belt wasn't passed around so often to warrant a high number. There are 5 former world champions as well as another 3 future world champions. And if you count IC champions, this match has more singles title holders than non-title holders. There really isn't a ton of dead weight in this match. A lot of entries that had potential here. They played the match concept off well, too. There is almost someone always hanging on to escape elimination, so it keeps your interest held close. The one major flaw for me is how the ring just empties out halfway through as if to say "Alright, lets reset and do it again." This match earned Flair a lot of respect from WWF fans who maybe weren't as familiar with his work, and you couldn't have given him a better launching point for a Wrestlemania defense. Absolutely worth its reputation as one of the greatest Rumbles ever."

The best parts of this Rumble were genuinely the brief moment Ric Flair and The British Bulldog were in the ring alone and that one punch Shawn Michaels sold to The Texas Tornado. Also the finish is total bullshit, Ric Flair winning his first WWF-championship shouldn't be about a fucking Hogan angle. Great post match promo from Flair tho."

I think my favorite elimination was when Repo Man eliminated both Greg Valentine and Nikolai Volkoff at different times in the match. Ric Flair I bless your soul. *****"

[7.0] "Great story throughout this of course, but the match itself is tons of fun as well. Flair selling for just about everybody and Heenan's absolute panic on commentary every time Flair seems in harm's way, he really sells this even more. It's still got the same issues a lot of WWF stuff from the early 90s and before has but I'd say it does hold up in a lot of ways. The whole stuff with Savage eliminating himself but not it not counting is a little silly and laughable but that honestly just makes me like it more. Hulk being a big sore loser and making it all about himself does kinda sour the finish for me but man seeing Ric win is so satisfying and the promo afterwards only makes it better, required post-match viewing imo."

The overarching storyline of Flair's pure endurance is fab, and it spins off into so many interesting storylines (Hogan/Sid, Randy/Jake, etc). Also just so much fun to watch. It's this and 2001 for me."

The story of Flair lasting nearly the whole match, being a target for almost everybody else in the match and finding a way to win was tremendous. The last few minutes were very dramatic as well. It was booked very well. I'm not going to go five stars for it, but I thought it was an excellent Rumble match that never gets old."

[4.0] "I have no idea why this rumble is rated so highly. It's the first one with actual stakes as the WWF Championship was on the line, so that's cool, but the match itself was pretty dull. The start was good and Flair/Piper interaction was great, but the rest not so much. There was a lack of memorable spots and interactions to spice up the match. Savage stupidly eliminating himself is hilarious though."

Bobby Heenan's commentary makes the match for me, but it still would've been fun regardless. The few minutes with Piper, Flair, and Jake the Snake fighting each other was probably my favorite part. Great match."

[8.0] "This Rumble starts pretty similarly to other Rumbles outside of Bulldog's early dominance given the build where he won a battle royale, with some good talent stringing it along, but once it comes down to Flair & Boss Man with an insane little sequence before Flair is left alone and Piper enters, this gets SO good. Flair/Piper and Flair/Piper/Roberts segments were so awesome and Duggan just added to it before the field filled out again. From there you end up with a LOT of big names and great talents coming in and out and doing good work (special mention to Slaughter's elimination which was an insane bump that got glossed over). Great final six overall, down to 4 and then 3 for the finishing stretch where Sid turns on Hogan and leaves the runway open for Flair to get the belt. Flair has an awesome performance, same with a few others like Piper, but I don't know if this is THE Rumble like its reputation implies. ****"

[10.0] "Now this match feels big. The first Rumble match that has any consequence and it's in a big way with the title on the line. I normally look at the line-up of the Rumble and see how many winners could win. This has 7 in my mind (Hogan, Piper, Flair, Taker, Sid, Roberts & Savage) and the rest of the roster is some of the best wrestlers ever (HBK, DiBiase, Tornado, Bossman, Martel, Bulldog just to name a few). You have some stories going in (Savage/Roberts, the debut of HBK, Piper 2 belts, Sid turning heel? to name the main ones) that add more fuel to the fire, but the main tale being told is Flair proving to be the Real World Champion by going the distance. He seems like everyone is gunning for him one way or another, as he is an outsider when you think about it. Puts him over as the man and a rare example of a heel backing up his claims. The action and spots in the match are the weakest part of the whole thing with not much to talk about but it really doesn't matter here. This is one of my favorite Rumbles and it's close to perfect for me."

Ric Flair entered the match at #3 and went on to win the whole thing lasting more than an hour. This legendary performance alongside Bobby Heenan's top notch commentary elevated this match on a whole new level. There have been several great rumbles after this, but none have been able to match the greatness of this match. [****3/4]"

[6.0] "Not my favorite Royal Rumble match, far from it actually. Most of it is boring and forgettable, most of the eliminations are duds, there's some big names but also some particularly bad workers in there. Ric Flair's performance is great, loved Piper in this too, but as far as i'm concerned, the real MVP of the match might be The Brain. Heenan is pure comedy gold on commentary here and made an otherwise underwhelming match so much more enjoyable. Ric Flair winning and delivering that iconic post-match promo surely elevate the match. Even with that, it's decent at best. *** 1/4"

It's a good way to pay homage to the legends of the Golden Era and has some great showcase moments from guys who would shine in the New Generation. In this match you capture why Flair is considered the best storyteller of this period. A brilliant performance, everything about his gimmick is condensed from the first minute to the last of his appearance. Savage's clumsy participation is a laugh in itself, i still don't get it. And it's a shame that Hogan likes to try to make everything about himself, which makes the Final Four a little less fun than the match was without him. Anyway [****]"

This is a really good Rumble based on a number of things for me. I loved the short interviews with people in the Rumble throughout the entire show. This match has STAR POWER. Flair was the right winner here to stack on some prestige, and the post match "with a tea-ah in my eye! " promo is an all-timer. Unfortunately, I am not blind and have watched wrestling evolve over the past 33 years. This one is worked REALLY slow, and they save a lot of the big names for the end, so it can kinda drags in parts. It doesn't stack up to newer Rumbles for me in excitement, even though this was still very solid, and from a much different era."

However, the many great things in this Rumble: Slaughter making Sid look superhuman by taking a fantastic bump over the top rope, Heenan's commentary, the star power of people such as Macho Man and the judicious entries of people such as Piper, etc - make up for them. Of course, this is Flair's Rumble and he gives one of his last truly great performances by going over an hour and keeping the whole thing together. His "with a tear IN MY EYE! " post-match promo is god-tier as well."

Great performances all round, star quality up and down the board, an abundance of storylines furthered, and to cap it off the World title is at stake. Obviously there must be a shoutout to Flair for going a full hour with one of the all-time great Rumble performances, but there's a litany of other guys in this who shined too. Excellent match elevated even further by the booking and entire presentation."

[9.0] "[4.25*] We had 15 minutes of great backstage promos from the biggest stars hyping up the first ever Royal Rumble WWF World Championship Match. It started off with the British Bulldog and Ted DiBiase, Flair was #3. Flair and Bulldog dominated until Shawn Michaels came in, he had just betrayed Marty Jannetty and began his phenomenal singles career. Then the ring started to get more filled with superstars. Big Boss Man came in at #13 and cleaned the ring a little bit, right after that Flair eliminated Bulldog in a shocker. Both of them were already 22 min into the match until Flair took the #1 out. Hercules eliminated Barbarian, Boss Man eliminated Hercules and Flair eliminated Boss Man after a little one on one, so Flair was alone in the ring until RODDY PIPER came in at #15 for an absolutely insane crowd reaction. Roberts came in and he immediately turned on Flair lmao. We got Flair, Piper, Jake and Duggan at the same time. Huge USA chants and an incredible atmosphere. We started the 20s with Taker as the #20 and Savage as the #21 (giant pop of course). Savage eliminated Roberts but then he got out of the ring by himself from the top rope to attack Roberts (why? lmao), so Taker went after him on the ringside and threw him inside the ring again but I was not sure if he was still officialy on the match, even commentary was questioning. This ended up being the most famous non-eliminaton ever and it happened completely by accident. Like in every single Rumble, the match got a little bit bloated and monotonous for a short amount of time after that Savage stuff, until THE HULKSTER came in at #26 and the crowd went fucking crazy again lmfaooo what a star. He eliminated The Undertaker and Berzerker one after another and ripped his shirt off! What an aura. At #28, here is comes Sgt. Slaughter, a former WWF Champion who could easily be the winner. Names like Ric Flair (since the beginning), Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan are still there with two names left to come. At #29, Sid Justice entered (R.I.P) and the last entrant was Warlord! We reached the final 4 after Sid eliminated Rick Martel and unfortunately Roddy Piper. Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage and Sid Justice. This level of star power is unmatchable, anyone here could be the winner. This rocks. Savage is eliminated (now for real) and we have our big 3. Hulk was attacking Flair and Sid eliminated him from behind, WOW. Hogan is pissed off so he tries to pull Sid to the outside, Flair appears and throws him for the win. The first time ever a #3 won the Rumble in one of the best editions ever. Hulk and Sid had an argument after the match. The Royal Rumble is not a normal wrestling match, it is not about workrate. The most important thing is the feeling. Surprise, drama and unpredictability, exactly what it happened there. This had an even more special feeling because it was for the vacated WWF Championship and all the backstage promos before the match added a lot to its star power. Impeccable presentation."

[10.0] "The 1992 royal rumble match is the first one of it's kind to truly be considered fantastic or more for many reasons. It was for the vacant WWF World Title which gave all the wrestlers involved more of a reason to be competing in the match, the star power of wrestlers competing was just brilliant and it told such an incredible story around Ric Flair with his incredible performance, him winning the match and title and his famous "With a tear in my eye" promo after the match. Such a Spectacular royal rumble match and one of, if not, the best ever of it's kind to this day."

[9.0] "There's only two Royal Rumble matches to date that I consider perfect or near perfect and this is one of them. It told a great story of Ric Flair starting early at number 3 and going on to win the whole thing while getting close to being eliminated many times. This wasn't common back then. The only thing I would takeaway from this match is the ending with Hulk Hogan helping Ric Flair eliminate Sid and still being viewed as the good guy. Otherwise everything else was perfect, the stories told were great; Flair vs Piper, Savage vs Roberts, Hogan vs Flair, Hogan vs Taker, even Bobby Heenan on commentary was perfect. Let's not forget about the amazing promo that came after the match from Flair."
Billy Boy wrote on 27.06.2024:
[9.0] "For years, I have considered this match both my favorite Rumble and the best Rumble to date. After rewatch, it still holds up. My opinion may change later down the line in my marathon, but thats how it stands currently. This match has it all (minus surprises): a true Iron Man performance, great pacing, storytelling, action, commentary, and especially Star power. By my count, 19 of these competitors are in the Hall of Fame with several others more than deserving of an induction (Jerry Sags, Smash, Haku). At one point in the match, there are seven consecutive entrants that are Hall of Famers. Its really crazy to see it. Another thing I want to discuss before delving into the match itself is the commentary. Heenan specifically is incredible here. His performance is arguably the greatest color commentary performance of all time. The way he sells Flairs struggle throughout is great. One last thing, this is the first Rumble to have actual stakes at hand with the winner receiving the vacant WWF Championship. It added a whole other layer to this match. Anyways, onto the match itself. The first 10 minutes or so of this match is really a showcase for Bulldog. He single-handedly eliminates three guys while also press slamming others like its nothing. After Tito enters, he sorta just becomes another guy. Between numbers six and 12, the rings just filling up for the sake of a ring cleansing. This part isnt bad at all and it really showcases several of the mid-carders of the time (Von Erich, Barbarian, and Repo Man in particular). I also want to point out how Bulldog and Michaels give a little sneak preview to their 1995 encounter. The ring clearing just for Piper to come out and try to ruin Flairs night is some great booking. The mans been taking a beating for 25 minutes straight up to this point. Theres a nice little mini triple threat match in here too with Flair, Piper, and Roberts. Id say after this, the match does begin to slow down a little. I wouldnt say it goes back to being great until Savage comes out. Immediately, he goes after Roberts, but since Roberts and Undertaker are still an alliance at this point, its basically a handicap match. This is exactly how ongoing stories should be incorporated into the Rumble. There are some great examples in later years, but this still stands as one of the greatest instances of it. It once again slows down but picks back up with Hogan coming in. The whole reason for this match being for the title is because of shenanigans regarding title changes at the previous years Survivor Series as well as This Tuesday in Texas, so them two immediately going after each other is fitting. I do like the random ass alliance between Undertaker, Berzerker, and IRS ganging up on Hogan. Anyways, it doesnt last too awfully long because Hogan tosses out Undertaker and Berzerker not long after. In regards to Star power, here comes Skinner. Sid comes out at #29 and is an immediate force to be reckoned with. His performance here probably the greatest one-off Rumble performance of all time. Warlord is #30. Back to Sid, he lasts just under six minutes which doesnt sound impressive, but the guy was the second to last entry and still made it to the final two. He also eliminated six people (the most of the whole match). Despite how good this match is, even I have to say the finish is kinda shit. Whiny baby back bitch Hogan throws a hissy fit for being tossed out fair and square. All to lead to a shit WrestleMania match between the two. Now lets talk about Flairs performance. He lasts 59 minutes, breaking the longevity record set the previous year by Rick Martel. He also dumps out five guys from the match including four Hall of Famers. In addition to that, he wins thing. Very clear MVP recipient. Some other guys last a bit (Bulldog lasts 22 minutes, Pipers in there for 34, and IRS stays in for 27). Sid and Hogan are the only guys that come close in terms of eliminations getting four and six respectively. Id say overall, Flairs performance here is arguably top 10 all time. Now lets discuss the post-match. The angle between Sid and Hogan is shit. Flairs promo, however, is one of the all time great promos ever. Its still being shown in video packages to this day. Im gonna stop talking now. No Rumble has been or ever will be perfect, but damn is this close. Theres definitely some things I would change (Undertaker shouldve made it to the end), but this is still an incredible match that should definitely be seen at least once by every wrestling fan. Its that good. Im gonna go with a strong 9. Final rating: ****1/2"

[9.0] "This is a brilliantly structured Royal Rumble match that is brimming with personality. Ric Flair attempting to defy the odds is obviously the main story here, and his entire run in the match is phenomenal. I love the way that they weave in a number of interactions with notable rivals from Flair's past, while also giving fans the chance to see him face off with a number of new opponents. The highlight of the entire match for me might be the moment where Flair clears the entire and collapses from exhaustion, only for a fired up Roddy Piper to make his entrance and start taking the fight to Flair - it's only around the halfway mark of the match, and it does a terrific job setting up what a monumental task Flair has ahead of him. While for the most part the match contains an excellent attention to detail (there are a lot of awesome little things throughout the match, like Roberts letting Piper choke Flair just a little longer before he gets involved, or the previous Iron Man record holder Martel having his chance to take Flair out before he breaks the record) there are a few moments that don't quite work out. Notably, Savage eliminating himself and it not counting feels awkward, and I think the finish itself is pretty questionable, too. The top babyface being a sore loser simply doesn't play very well, and while I have no problem with Flair getting a cheap win, I do think it's a strange note to end the match on. I do also feel that the two minute intervals between participants cause some segments of the match to drag slightly. While I can completely understand why many fans would consider this to be their favourite Royal Rumble match, personally there are at least a couple of entries that I prefer - although I'm sure I'd at least have it somewhere in my Top 5."

Hogan, Savage, Piper, Flair, Taker, Sid, Slaughter, Roberts, Michaels, Bulldog, etc. This lineup made it so that there were like, 10 people who could believably win the match. And I think they chose the best one. Flair puts on one of the best and most gripping performances in rumble history and its accentuated by one of the greatest calls in wrestling history in the form of Bobby Heenan. And who could forget about the post match promo, the iconic With a tear in my eye. This Rumble had it all, star power, action, storytelling, variety, character and charm. One of the very best."

Flair getting into it with his past rivals was a fantastic touch to serve as part of the multiple mini-storylines in the contest. The British Bulldog, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage get an extra shoutout for their individual showing. This obviously has top-notch action, but it got all the necessary stories across while setting up a couple of WrestleMania 8 showdowns as well. Bobby Heenan having an orgasm behind the announcer's desk might go down as the best commentary work of all time. The Nature Boy became the winner and the new champ after Hogan unjustly eliminated Sid by pulling him out of the ring. Flair's "WITH A TEAR IN MY EYES! " post-match promo still gave me chills. It's all about Flair, he truly deserved this spot and push, his participation wasn't just entering on 3rd and just stay on a corner while the time gone by, no, he was active, bumping, attaking, defending and eliminating, been a challenge to almost every singe entrant was great, a top athlete against the star power of the early 80s. The first part was dominated by the Bulldog, even elimating DiBiase like he was nothing, that along side the participation of Michaels really was a message that the times were changing, credit too for Tito Santana. Then Flair it's the only man standing and they comes Piper (great perfomance), Duggan, Roberts, IRS, Taker and Savage, who did it nice for a competitive match for the belt, no one was going to be eliminate that easily. Hogan's entry set the final moments of the Rumble, toosing big men like Taker while some old wounds showed up, classics like Hogan and Piper, I didn't the way to the end, suddenly there were 4 men left, a weird change of the pase. But the end is great again, Flair manages to eliminate Savage proving his endurence and then as a heel took adventage of the Hogan/Sid altercation to win the long match. ***3/4"

And after that it's the Flair show and he just makes every person who comes in contact with him look like a superstar. The spot where Haku teams with him then turns around and starts attacking him, awesome. I like the way the ring gets busier then gradually empties until there's no one. Pipers entrance is incredible. Then Jake the Snake being sly and letting them fight lovely stuff. It picks up with Hogan and Undertaker coming I then Sid and Slaughter. It felt like anyone of about 8 guys could win, beautiful stuff. This felt like the start of something big but it ended up being the end of an era. The commentary is incredible throughout. Bobby Heenan selling the story that flair had to win and Gorilla Monsoon laughing that he's screwed. I watched this as a 6 year old and was furious Flair won and a year later I stopped watching wrestling and 16 years later I watched it again and rekindled my love for the sport. A special match."

Apart from that this Rumble had the incredible star power and every entrance, especially in the middle of the match, felt like a big deal. Roberts and Savage were at it again and I loved how Jake got out of the ring before Randy entered it. Piper was hot as hell and Michaels showed a lot of promise in his first singles push. Good stuff, easily the best Royal Rumble up to this point."

Of course, this match is also known for setting up the Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice feud, as Sid eliminates Hogan, and Hogan the sore loser he is helps Flair eliminate Sid; letting Flair win the match. Yet again, is Hogan really the good guy? This causes Sid to have a psychotic break later on."

[10.0] "The best Royal Rumble match and that all due to the winner Ric Flair. This was a star studded royal rumble that was full of the great characters that made 80s WWF so special and seeing Ric Flair interacting with all of them was so damn fun to watch. Ric Flair proved why he is the best long match wrester as put on the best ironman performance ever in a Royal Rumble match surviving 62 minutes to win his first WWF title. Bobby Heenan on commentary was brilliant and promo by Flair after the match is his career best. *****"

This Rumble is mainly remembered for the lavish performance by Ric Flair, matched only by the performances of Chris Benoit in 2004 and Gunther in 2023 (and I would also add that of Daniel Bryan in the Greatest Royal Rumble of 2018)."

The best Rumble matches all have a solid through line, a story that goes through the entire match, and this one is no exception. Flair's performance is great, but it wouldn't be half as good without Heenan being incredible on commentary."

I always loved the concept of a Royal Rumble, but usually didn't deliver to expectation, even so every year as a kid this was the biggest event I looked forward to, and I always waited for a tag team Rumble, not to be. This was a pretty good Royal Rumble, the first 30 mins were brilliant, 10*, there was one point during the Rumble, you had Flair, Michaels, Bulldog, Santana, Darsow, Kerry von Erich & Barbarian, the quality of the section they put in elevated this Rumble, these should have been the final participants, they all sold and worked like generals. For me it didn't reach this level again, although the next quarter was pretty good with Piper, Roberts etc. From Randy Savage making his over the top rope error, it was becoming boring by then & they let him back in cause the gimmick they wanted was the former champions. The mega superstars left at the end couldn't hold a torch to the earlier participants and the finish was lame. Ric Flair was brilliant throughout selling like a hero all match, Heenan on mic was excellent and unbiased as expected unlike his cohort. The after match promo was also very entertaining, Mr. Perfect and Heenan struggled to keep their composure while Flair went on a rant. No Vicious or Hogan giving a lame finish and this could of been higher, but a solid 8*"
