For someone like me who started watching wrestling in the late 2000s, that backlash has always clashed with my personal experience. Michaels was a staple of my early fandom, an electric performer whose work in his post-injury run was often the highlight of WWE TV. Whether it was the WWE narrative or my own eyes, I came to believe that Shawn was, simply, one of the best. And watching his Raw classic with John Cena from April 2007 again after all these years reminded me why. This match isn't just a clinic in pacing and structure, it's a showcase of why Cena, often unfairly maligned in his era, deserves his flowers too. Cena matches Michaels step for step, selling brilliantly and controlling long stretches of the match with confidence and understated finesse. Shawn, expressive and theatrical but never overbearing here, puts Cena over as a physical and technical equal, even as he claws his way to victory with a Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere. At nearly an hour, the match never drags and instead feels like a modern TV epic; a Ric Flair-style championship match with the polish of 2000s WWE. Rewatching it now, I'm glad to confirm it still holds up. Maybe Michaels is a mixed bag in hindsight, and maybe Cena didn't always get his due in real time, but together they created something special that transcends narrative spin. ****1/2 |

Even though the world would still hate on Cena, in the night of WrestleMania 23, Cena proved he could hand with a head from the game's Mt. Rushmore, and that he could (no doubt) wrestle, despite what the fans would say. |

It was on point after all the punishment to his leg, and even more after that massive piledriver on the steel steps, as dude seemed to be reacting on pure instinct. You got some fun spots like the classic ref bump (that didn't slow down the match, thankfully) and some blading here and there. There were nice nearfalls towards the end too, but I'd say they could've spent about one more minute on that last STF, I felt Shawn tapped way too fast. One last thing, just maybe the result was too predictable and "standard" for a WM main event, but I don't think this is a big deal (coming from someone evaluating the match almost two decades later) |

Shawn won a triple threat against Orton and Edge for the right to challenge his Tag Team Championship partner John Cena at the Mania 23. He turned on Cena during the build and said he was going to do so when he least expected. Cena had an insane entrance. The match starts with HBK out-smarting and out-wrestling Cena, getting the champ pretty angry. Cena tries to kick Shawn but he hyperextended his left knee and worked there for the majority of the match. It was a match filled with struggle and drama, specially after the ref bump. Shawn got color after hitting his head on the post which only made the crowd cheer for him more, even with him being the heel. I loved the 10-count spot as they sold it perfectly. Cena won after Shawn tapped out to the STFU, he had tried to apply his submission before in a very similar segment to the Angle vs HBK Mania 21 one, but this time Michaels was ready to escape. This match had a lot of references and was only the beginning of their feud as HBK would betray Cena at the RAW after Mania making them lose the tag belts. |

Cena did a very special entrance before the match, and I loved basically everything they did, the experienced Michaels targeted John Cena's left knee, he did a solid limb work there, showed all his ring experience, and everything was paused but extremely captivating, I love matches like that, Cena did the AA and couldn't go for the pin, Shawn did the Sweet Chin Music and fell immediately after as well, they were creating anticipation the whole time, and the ending moments were thrilling as hell, loved the reversals and the sellings, this had everything that a big match needs, super positive main event - {****1/4} |

The spot of the contest to me was the nasty looking Piledriver Cena takes onto the steel steps towards the end and it was cool to see both guys busted open by the end to add to the visual of a great title match. Solid 4 stars and it's pretty crazy to hear JR bring up the stat that John Cena has been WWE Champion for 20 of the last 24 months at this point in time. |
