[10.0] "There is such an insane feeling I get when watching Terry Funk wrestle deathmatches in Japan. He just becomes a whole other beast over there. This is the last time the Chainsaw Charlie moniker was ever seen and what a fucking send-off (planned or not) for this character to disappear. Superbly violent with a lot of run ins towards the end, just amplifying the chaos."
[8.0] "[3.75*] I couldn't believe what I just saw. I'm a big Terry guy, but that was crazily good -- cerebral and gritty in the best way possible, especially at this point in Terry's career. It's symbolic and transcendent; the psychology, the emotions, the hatred -- it's everything that makes wrestling beautiful. And it all felt real. A timeless match -- an actual display of violent elegance."
[8.0] "As bloody and chaotic as you would expect. Fun spots include a chair duel (popular in 1998), Funk tossing chairs at Goto who literally bats them away with another chair, Funk burying Goto in all the barbed wire boards then jumping on top, and Goto breaking a bottle before chasing off a fan holding a 'Gotoh Sucks' sign. Finish sees Goto recruit a second to hold the broken bottle in place so he can straight up attempt murder by Pancaking Funk onto it, so Kaientai makes the save and all hell breaks loose. I wanted more time. Still find it hard to believe WWF sent their workers to participate in this show, and even harder to believe the promoter put this so high on the card."
[6.0] "A match I would have been terrified by watching live but 26 years on it just doesn't impact me the same way. I am liking the fella in the retro Leeds shirt who eventually gets launched into the chairs by Terry. There is plenty of blood but sometimes you just want to watch a motherfucker get punched in the head. I enjoyed it all breaking down with people running in at the end."
[8.0] "Funk was incredibly giving and worked harder than you could ever ask him to, but Goto's performance just wasn't up to Funk's effort, which was so disappointing to me. At the same time, this match is an experience - a constant sense of danger that could get out of whatever illusion of control there was at any moment, a wild brawl in which many different weapons were used, both wrestlers bled like pigs - basically something that you can only see in pro-wrestling and nowhere else."
[9.0] "Amazing vibes! Terry Funk plays a great as slightly of his depth but, also crafty. Tarzan Goto is wild wrestles like a video game boss and violent. He feels pain too. The referee gets tossed barbed wire board. Throughout the matches pieces of Chainsaw Charlie are literally striped away in time him being Terry Funk by the end Terry is in wrestling trunks swearing at Tarzan Goto"
[10.0] "Honestly, one of the best matches ever. Goto is the big great evil of pro wrestling, a sweaty fat dude in a bright yellow singlet that punches and kicks and claws and stabs anyone standing in his way. Thanks to the powers of Wally Yamaguchi, the man in Goto's line of sight is wearing pantyhose on his face and carries around a chainsaw. The chainsaw vs. chair duel to start the match really sets the tone, as this is one of the wildest spectacles in the history of pro wrestling. Goto and Charlie brawl all around Korakuen, there's tons of different plunder utilized, and there's even some great storytelling moments like Goto doing the spinning toe hold as a big show of disrespect, only to get pushed headfirst into a barbed wire board. Beyond the shock and awe of the match, this is old ass Terry Funk fighting for his life against the borderline biblical enemy that is Tarzan Goto. Goto's work with the broken bottle is some of the grossest weapon usage ever, and Kaientai rushing in to save Funk's life was incredible stuff. I know the no-contest finish might turn some people away, but I don't know man, it just fit the match perfectly to me and felt like the perfect way to get across just how bad the situation was getting. Plus, Yamaguchi takes a fucked up powerbomb from Goto during the post-match brawl. This is God's pro wrestling right here."
[7.0] "This is a sweet as hell match on paper. Funk gets destroyed all throughout Korakuen and the bleachers, gear ripped and face bloodied and makes his comeback by launching chairs across ringside at Goto. Really love the way Funk takes Goto's offence, especially in the ring where he's been so ruined and can't defend any of the incoming barbed wire offence and even falls just from a strike into a propped up barbed wire board because he can barely stand. Getting his offence back by launching chairs because he makes enough distance works so well too. At one point Goto is thrown on the floor and all the barbed wire boards are thrown on him for Funk to do the worst (best) knee drop onto them. Sadly it ends in a no content when a ton of dudes interfere but some dude in a suit takes the meanest powerbomb so that was sick."
[6.0] "This was an experience. Goto enters first and rushes Funk during his entrance with a chair. We get a chair vs chainsaw duel briefly but Goto manages to knock the chainsaw out of Charlie's hand (cool! ) and it wouldn't be seen again. After a brief chair fight they brawl into the crowd and I almost puked from watching the cameraman try to keep up with them. Goto slams Funk's head into the wall and starts reigning in with punches - Funk is already bleeding. Luckily it's not too long before they get back to the ring. Goto wastes no time making use of the barbed wire boards, throwing them at Funk to down him and then throwing some more. As Goto unleashes more headbutts and punches, Funk is wearing the crimson mask in no time. Goto rips off a piece of the barbed wire board and used it to cut Funk's head, but it seemed about as flimsy as a piece of paper so I doubt the effectiveness. The action spills outside the ring again and we get a super cool spot where Funk is tossing chairs at Goto, one after another, only for Goto to bat them all away with his own chair like he's playing baseball. Awesome stuff. Finally Funk gets some offence, jabbing away at Goto then sending him into the corner post. As they get back into the ring there is some back and forth ending with Funk being clotheslined onto a barbed wire board. Goto attempts the spinning toe hold, that bastard, but Funk kicks him head first into a board that was leaning against the turnbuckle - nice! Goto does a blade job here. He then falls outside the ring and Funk dumps every board in the ring onto him before jumping off the apron onto all of them, again this is great. Both men are so bloody at this point. Funk then starts randomly attacking the referee - I'm not at all familiar with the Charlie gimmick so maybe that's what he does. He gets his karma by way of a beer bottle to the head. Goto then smashes the bottle against the ring post. He turns around to a fan with lady a "Goto sucks" sign and walks towards her, she bolts! Very GIF worthy. Back into the ring again. Goto uses the broken bottle to cut Funk on the head and arm and then decides to throw a board at the referee! Funk's manager, Víctor Quiñones, takes a shot at Goto and gets laid out. Then Goto tries to slam Funk's head against the broken bottle with the help of a masked wrestler I am unfamiliar with (sorry) which leads Kaientai to run out and make the save. Now there are a lot of people in the ring that I am unfamiliar with and they are all fighting. Goto powerbombs some guy in a suit that is with the WWF guys (sorry again) and the referee calls a no contest. Everyone continues to fight after the bell. Funk leaves with his Kaientai friends and flips off Goto. Goto then cuts a promo that I wish I could understand. As I said, this was an experience. (3.25*)"
