117.09.2024cjm5505067.0This match had a lot more variety than Maeda vs. Fujiwara the show prior. Inoki and Fujiwara both have plenty of skill to do a fine NJPW Puro match as well as a UWF shoot match and that's what this was. The stuff with Maeda in Fujiwara's corner throughout the match and especially after the bell rings is doing a great job to build to something even better in the UWF vs. NJPW rivalry.

1104.02.2023Gravelord6.0One of my primary gripes with NJPW heavyweight matches from this era is that most of the match consists of dull grappling that, with few exceptions, will never influence the finish. This match is no exception, as I found most of the first sixteen minutes or so to be an absolute bore to watch. While the crowd was quite hot, it did not raise the excitement level of the match. Moreover, because a chap as egomaniacal as Antonio Inoki would never allow himself to be submitted, I did not once buy that the match would end when Inoki was in danger on the mat. Predictably, the only part of this match that mattered was the last few minutes, which were admittedly exciting, and featured some good striking. But, as I alluded to before, if you were to cut the first 16 minutes of this match, nothing would really change. That is to say, the finish could believably play out in mostly the same way. Overall, as dull a bout as I have come to expect from the NJPW heavyweight matches of 1980s. **3/4

1815.01.2021Makai Club 8.0My favourite part of the match was Inoki and Fujiwara talking shit and smirking at each other while they were tied in each other? s kneebar. Perfect example of what these two bring. High-class skill with so much personality and charm. The striking was good as well. It broke up a lot of the grappling and added to the bitter feel of the match. However the match is far from perfect as there were some moments where they were sitting in holds for no real reason other than to do it and it came off as obvious in comparison. The Inoki Bulldog Choke finish was great as was Maeda causing a massive brawl by cheapshotting Inoki after the match. ****

2101.10.2018Jetlag9.0Hey, look... it's two ultra charismatic dudes in a hot battle! This was exactly the kind of uncooperative high-resistance technical contest I like so much. Nothing fancy, just two guys who can grapple hitting the mat hard and battling it out. Give Inoki credit where it's true, there are not a lot of aces who could believably hang with Fujiwara in a match like this, let alone come across as the dominant force. When not on the mat, Inoki would constantly increase the pace by attacking Fujiwara with great looking punches and kicks. It's almost needless to say but Fujiwara's selling and was flawless and he had a ton of great facial expressions and thus came across as the most tenacious dude on the planet taking on the legend. Amazing how he can go from a smirking dick to that. Last few minutes were great with Inoki downing Fujiwara with an epic punch and Maeda taking offense to an Inoki kick leading to a near riot. But we still get a decisive finish, so it's all great. Hell of a thrilling contest and one of the finest 80s japan singles matches I've seen. ?

2521.12.2013yanus7.0Very traditional match, both guys target different limbs during the match, but at the end the match is decided by a sequence with kicks, punches, headbutts and a sleeper hold. I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of both guys, but this was good.
