Surprisingly, not a lot of people talked about it. I mean, they did--but it still felt somewhat underrated. Years later, I revisited it, but by then, my taste had changed quite a bit. For some reason, I didn't love it as much as I remembered. But today, I came across this match again on YouTube and thought, "Why not give it another watch? " Maybe my taste has evolved again, I don't know--but my god, did I love it this time. This watch made me feel like a kid again. I don't know where Orton ranks in the all-time conversation, but in terms of sheer coolness, he's got to be up there. It's the little things--the way he pulls up the table, not because he has to, but because he chooses to. The way he casually twirls the kendo stick before striking Christian. His facial expressions when he starts hearing those "voices"--just brilliant. And let's not forget Christian's performance. Such an underrated talent. He absolutely held his own here. This is one of those matches that just feels complete--satisfying in every sense. I recently rewatched The Shield's debut match, and while that was fire, it still felt a bit incomplete. Despite both matches being about the same length, this one feels longer--in a good way. It feels like they did everything and didn't leave anything. It's a **** 3/4 for me, so I'm gonna have to give it a 10 here as it's way closer to a 10 than a 9. |

They put on some of the greatest matches in pro wrestling history. They had such a special bond and so much chemistry that it'd make Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels jealous... I don't have any particular strong connection with a babyface Orton. He is serviceable. But as a heel he shines best. So this feud was a great surprise because Christian was the desperate heel and Randy was a babyface. Very strange dynamics but these two made it work to perfection every time they were given time. This match had everything from amazing in ring technical proficiency, violence, melodrama and theatre. Some of the spots were gnarly like the last RKO on the steel steps. Randy's selling is top notch. Christian brought his best heel character work. Also the reversals from both guys were very good as well. I liked that they recalled various moments from their past matches... One of the greatest matches and easily in my top 10 of all time. |

My only complaint is that I think there could have been maybe just a tad bit more runs of dominance from Christian, but a relatively minor complaint. There was real fun spots here, the finish in particular. Also, I don't think I've ever seen Randy Orton actually break an announce table until this match. The best match of SummerSlam 2011, and a worthy close to their rivalry. |

Also, I really did not like the RKO on the table spot, it felt pretty obvious and would have been much better had Christian performed it on Orton. |

The counters were quick and very, very crisp. The bursts of speed during their sequences mixing with the slower paced weapon segments complimented each other quite well, and the match was very hard-hitting the entire way through. Some of the weapon segments, like with the kendo stick were quite cliche, but none of the individual weapon segments went on overly long, so you can forgive that. Christian also didn't look like he was on Orton's level during the match, which is kind of disappointing. All of his offense came because he hit something fast and surprising, and he never took control for all that long, so this match didn't exactly cement him as a future top guy for the long term. While I wouldn't say this, or any match in the series between these two is as good as the hype seems to present them as, this is the best of the bunch, and was definitely a great match worth coming back to. A slightly overrated rivalry, but still certainly gets the job done. |
