Eddie Kingston does something that not a lot of wrestlers can do: he can make you feel more than anyone. CM Punk does something that not a lot of wrestlers can do: he can make you feel more than anyone. These two go out and put on not an all-time match, but an all-time fight. This is something that we don't see often in the States, a pure fight. These two guys, with every strike they throw, get you into the match more and more. They get you to feel something when watching these two guys who hate each other. Punk is playing a great heel with a crowd that goes 50/50 for both, to fully behind Eddie Kingston by the end. Punk plays it perfectly and doesn't try to get them on his side because he isn't there to get them on his side during this feud. He hates Eddie Kingston; he sees him as someone below him since the beginning. He is now at the top already, he is the John Cena. He does the 5 moves of doom, he tries to little bro Eddie after the match, but Eddie Kingston isn't someone you do that to, Eddie makes Punk earn everything. Punk's return was welcomed with open arms, with people happy to see him wrestle. Eddie saw him as a man he needed to get rid of, and that right there aged like wine. But Eddie can't do one thing, control his emotions while Punk can. While Punk earns this victory physically. He doesn't morally. Because now, he is the one pushing people down the card, he is John Cena, he is what Karmaa said, the Franchise. Perfect match. ***** (5) |

Most of my enjoyment of the match is just Eddie being absolutely masochistic in a fuck you to Punk, and it certainly wasn't a disappointment, but a looooot of the wrestling stuff they did do didn't look very clean and I think if they were in better shape or younger they could have had more pacing. Commentary remarked that it was like Frye and Takayama, but what made that match so special was the insane stamina both guys had, this match certainly didn't have that, so i dont think it was as good as it could have been, despite the story being there and thinking it was pretty well put together. The build to this focused on Punks lack of respect for Kingstons ferociousness, so the match itself reflects those styles. Punk wants to wrestle, Kingston wants to fight and puts Punk through hell. Its such brilliant character driven storytelling. The match itself is a brutal 11 minutes, with some rough looking spots and wonderful character beats, especially from Kingston. The moment where Punk got colour and Eddie wiped the blood on his forehead is brilliant. And the post match angle was literally perfect. An all timer. |
