Two things knocked off a couple of points for me. Firstly, I found Toyota's selling to often be weak, where she'd take a strong move just to be up in a second charging at Kong like nothing happened. That really can take me out of the moment as her moves should be devastating. The second, more minor, issue is that the match felt a couple of minutes too long. There were parts where they ran similar spots back again that added a little unnecessary bulk. Fun watch though and I think this is a great gateway match into older Joshi for a lot of current wrestling fans. |

Aja Kong played the monster with Manami Toyota fighting from underneath. Fighting is the appropriate term because this was a fight, with Kong giving a beating to her opponent, buy Toyota would not quit. There was a spot where Toyota landed on her head on the ramp, which looked brutal. Later on, Toyota did a splash from top rope to the floor and on a table with Kong on it. I don't say throught it because the table only bent, it did not break, so I Am The Table strikes again. Toyota was really impressive here, with her doing a springboard dive with only one foot and later on hitting Kong with a Tiger Suplex, which was great because Kong is a much bigger woman than Toyota is. There was another brutal spot where Toyota went for a sunset flip powerbomb, but then Kong just sat on Toyota. That would take the breath out of anyone. Toyota kept on fighting, but after a sitout brainbuster, Aja Kong ended up winning the match. I don't think this is 5 stars, but this was an excellent match worth seeing. ****3/4 |

The dynamic here is clear and executed to perfection: Aja is the giant and mean big beast while Manami is the shorter warrior full of heart and speed trying to survive the monster and steal a chance of winning. The world of pro wrestling is full of classics from this style such as this match and Bryan vs Morishima for example. I really love them, but for some reason I always give them a 4.5*. The same goes to Eddie vs Lesnar. I don't know why, they just scream a flawless, perfectly executed "Four and a half" for me. Probably it's because I've seen the formula a lot of times, but this is definitely one of the best. The bumps both women took looked very damn awful, mat looked hard and they worked very hard. A lot of stiff Bombs and specially the move Aja did on Manami on the ramp, that looked painful, brother. The ending came after Manami fought like a warrior, but couldn't do it anymore. |

The dynamic is so clear and well-acted straight away - Kong is the boastful, smirking monster champ, and she displays a magnificent economy of action; Toyota is determined, agile, screamy, and slightly insane. The fact that the execution of this match is sustained throughout, with only one or two slips in dozens of complex spots, is very appealing. The actual layout of the match, and the story told, are clear and effective - Kong is initially arrogant, smirking, making no effort, torturing Toyota; Toyota, though, eventually breaks out a few times and goes for increasingly insane spots. Kong gets worried. She has to amp things up (in fact, the first serious Toyota comeback is from Kong going to the top for a splash or similar). She will win, off a massive three-move combo where every step is needed, but it's very close. Maybe next time, we feel, for Toyota. You have to accept Toyotaisms - some people love them, and actually her worst no-selling is not on display here - but otherwise, pretty much perfect. 5/5 |

Aside from Manami only selling the work Aja did on her back while she had submissions applied to her, she did a terrific job of conveying the pain and it helped create some incredible drama, It's my biggest gripe with the match but it's forgiving when her offense is immensely captivating and thrilling. Awesome drama, fantastic dynamic, some intoxicating spots, and action - this is truly a classic match with a mystical feeling to it. ****3/4 |

Initially I was a bit underwhelmed by Kongs v subdued entrance to that very upbeat song, but the beat she took before that final walk over to the ring was heavy. As soon as Toyota rips off her robe and the bell rings she is full on, high-energy badass. Like, the most glamorous bat out of hell. Loved it. Sometimes her cries hit this really primal note that I loved. There was something really fascinating with the combination of the agility and flexibility Toyota displayed in contrast to the seeming limpness that would occur. Wild. Kong was a powerhouse and was this calm storm of strength. They were two opposing forces of nature. A tornado and an epic slow-moving storm. Big fan. |

However, this is a special, special match. It's not quite Misawa v Kawada at the Budokan 94 or Liger v Sasuke at the Super J cup but its in the same league, which is the highest of complements. I love how Toyota has to use her whole body and all her speed to combat the monster heel of Aja Kong (who is perfect in the role). Manami's offense was a beauty to behold and Aja Kong was as brutal as can be. This is possibly (probably) the greatest women's match of all time and there are maybe 5 better matches in the history of Japanese wrestling, and maybe 10 in wrestling history better. This is top, top tier, it all comes together very damn well. |
