[8.0] "Five years in the making. Five years after both winning their first world title at WrestleMania, which is kinda prophetic and pretty poetic. It's a full circle moment between two of the company's biggest stars, and it could've easily been the main event if not for Shawn's retirement. It's rather short for a WWE title match at WrestleMania (13 min), but it works. It's an exciting heavyweight battle with some solid work on top from Batista; smashmouth boot to the face, good control, he even pulls out one wicked DDT. I like the battle on the top rope, Cena's Five Knuckle Shuffle from the top rope, there's some great counters, big time kickouts, and Cena making Batista tap, which might be the only thing I dislike about this match. On a side note, Cena making HHH, HBK and Batista tap out at WrestleMania is insane! Anyway, what an underrated banger. ***3/4"

The super 5 knuckle was a cool touch, so was the spinebuster of the top. Other than that, nothing notable to mention. Cena's entrance was cool. Batista's often is underrated."

Being the last match of the Batista run it's not the best note but following the entire show prior this has me and the audience entirely invested in every move. Quintessential match of this era of wrestling and I just so happened to be a child in 2010 so it was great."

TripleCrown wrote on 22.12.2025:
[4.0] "They began this match like they had already been wrestling for 10+ minutes. This is just me being nitpicky, but having the champion come out first is always annoying. It was just a very slow match that kind of went into second gear towards the end, but it was just too late. This was a dream match, granted they had wrestled before... but John Cena & Batista, the two faces of WWE for the past 5 years going at it for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania just didn't live up to the hype. On paper it sounds great, but watching it just leaves a lot to be desired. Very disappointing performance from both Cena & Batista here."

[8.0] "8.5. Pretty awesome match, tbh. Tightly paced at under 14 mins, but you had all the the structure of an epic. Batista is great in control, hard hitting and countering any attempt that Cena gets, the spike DDT looked brutal. We get a rare top rope five knuckle shuffle, there's a trade of finishers that was really tense cause they didn't stall to the pin. I didn't agree with the finish, especially in hindsight, not because I think Batista should of won but because it tells a better story imo if Batista doesn't tap for subsequent matches. Still think its pretty awesome though. Nothing wasted, really except the finish."

I didn't love having someone like Batista tap out, but it still made sense given the rest of the match. The AA into DDT counter was one of the highlights, as well as Cena's Batista Bomb counter into the STF. One of the most underrated rivalries IMO."

[7.0] "my one gripe with this match and honestly to me is a huge gripe is they decided the best option they had was to have batista tap out? It makes no sense that is literally the worst possible option they could go with for the finish of this match? Having batista pass out in the hold would have been the way i went imo. But man this may be the most underrated match of both these guys career this match. SLAPPSSSSS. 3.75 stars"

First half of this match is standard rest holds and a bunch of whatever. Picks when up they start trading their big moves on each other. Cena wins lol Its decent 3.5/5"

[6.0] "It was a good match but one that wasn't appropriate for two stars of this caliber to be delivering this at Wrestlemania and also not complimentary of their build. This match should've been on fire from the outset instead we got a lock up and what followed up until halfway through was way too slow and did not communicate the tension or animosity that was created during their build. Batista should've been a scornful killer considering his reasoning for having this match happen at WM, instead, we get him being methodical and slow even throwing in some scientific stuff in the first half. The second half was a lot more appropriate for this feud and John Cena seemed to have the most urgency to his offense. It turned into a back-and-forth between the two that was reminiscent of their much better encounter at SummerSlam. The crowd was absolutely up for this match and they were loud but unfortunately what was delivered was more on par with something that could've taken place at a regular television show. I will say that Batista inadvertently spiking Cena with a ddt after he countered him within the first three minutes of the match was fantastic. There is still some cool stuff here but it should've been better. ***1/4"

[5.0] "This was another match on this card that was perfectly serviceable, but not outstanding. There was nothing new or original here. Just them both doing their basic stuff. And the middle portion of the match had quite a long period of rest holds for a match that already wasn't really that long. At least WWE learned from their mistake and didn't make this match the main event over Shawn vs. Taker. This match doesn't measure up as a Wrestlemania world title match, so at least the best match got the spot it deserved. This match was enjoyable, but not great, and not up to the spot it had."

KingsCrossing wrote on 06.04.2024:
[8.0] "I've always considered Batista vs. Cena to be an underappreciated rivalry - they have really good chemistry together. This was a fairly high impact encounter with a lot of big moves and interesting reversals. The DDT that Batista lands around the midway point looks like it could cripple somebody. The finisher back-and-forth is actually really well done. It feels a lot more impactful than it sometimes can, and they do a good job of making it feel like a struggle as they each try to land the finishing blow. I think the finish is a little funky (a bit too much of a no sell from Cena to get that last reversal), but otherwise this is a really entertaining WWE-style main event match."

[7.0] "Their phenomenal SummerSlam encounter encouraged me to watch this and this one isn't their best match. Dare I say that their SummerSlam match had bigger "big match" feel. I still enjoyed it. A slow work at the beggining, but when the action picked up, it was great to watch. I absolutely loved the crowd reactions after the Batista Bomb and 2 Cena haters with 2 Cena fans in the front row also added something memorable to the match. Good stuff"
RPMX123 wrote on 17.04.2023:
[6.0] "Not as good as their Summerslam match by a long shot, the first 7/8 mins are just heatless rest holds. Starts picking up some steam when big dave starts busting out the big moves like the spinebuster and the spear, and starts getting pretty good when Cena debuts(? ) the diving five knuckle shuffle. Crowd pop big for both men's near falls. There's some really awkward counters here like when Cena reverses Tista's powerslam into an AA, takes forever to secure dave on his shoulders. I like the callback to Summerslam where Cena goes for a diving leg drop again but this time Tista counters it into just a spinebuster, not nearly as cool as the Batista Bomb. Crowd go ballistic for the final STF and Tista taps out. These guys pulled it back in the end but they just didn't gel as well as they did two years before. ***1/4"

Every time I was watching this match in particular, it all felt so fast that once it got the finish of Cena countering the Batista Bomb into a Sunset Flip STF for the dub, it feels great to watch. ****"

Outbackjames wrote on 10.08.2022:
[10.0] "One of my favorite power matches ever. The build to this one was so good that by the time we got to match time, the crowd actually gave John Cena a monster face reaction for his entrance. The false-finish callback to Summerslam 2008 was a lot of fun too."
TigerDiver wrote on 30.03.2022:
[7.0] "These two could've wrestled with one arm tied behind their back and it'd still be good, so it's no surprise this ended up delivering. Batista's work on Cena's previously injured neck was a wonderful psychological touch and callback we need more of. The trading and reversals of the signature/finisher moves down the stretch were outstanding, and the whole crowd ate up every bit of it. [***1/2]"

[6.0] "Kind of disappointing given the match they had at SS a couple of years back but still decent. I felt like given the story this probably should've had a stip like no holes barred since Cena was looking to get revenge on Batista. Batista working on the neck all match because he broke Cena's neck before was a nice callback. I guess Cena making Batista tap is a nice due over for no stip.***"
cactus wrote on 19.05.2021:
[8.0] "The last six months of Batista's full-time run brought us some of his best stuff. Batista counters an early Attitude Adjustment attempt with a spike DDT and it's gloriously brutal. This leads to Batista working over Cena's neck, which was previously injured during his match with Batista at Summerslam 2008. The exciting finishing stretch sees plenty of close calls as both guys get near falls on their finishers. Batista tries to land a second Batista bomb, but is countered and taps out to the STF. These two had watertight chemistry and play off each other well. What we got here was a proper heavyweight clash that could of went either way."

[8.0] "This was actually a very good match, to my great surprise. I didn't have very high expectations and I was very surprised by the quality of the match, which was rather short but so much fun. Batista was a great vicious heel here, doing a solid job on Cena's neck and Cena was obviously a great babyface as usual. A really simple but effective match with a good dynamic, a good rhythm and a crowd that was obviously on fire for Cena. The last few minutes were really excellent with some finishers and some nearfalls, and I must admit that even knowing the result, Batista's kick-out on the Attitude Adjustment got me. The construction of the match made Cena's victory better so kudos to them for that, everything in this match ruled. There was nothing exceptional or transcendental, but it was just a good wrestling match."

Just felt like rest holds. None of it was engaging or interesting. I would've liked to see some big bombs from Batista to actually fit what they are doing but nope. Cena? s comeback were good but not good enough to save this awful match. *1/4"

[8.0] "good match. I thought Cena's entrance was awesome. Batista gained control early on and his offense was mainly punches and kicks. Cena got some offense. He tried for an AA but Batista got a nice counter by spiking him on his head with a DDT. Batista worked to target Cena's neck because the last time they faced off he broke his neck. There was a good spot when Cena went for the five knuckle shuffle and Batista countered to a spinebuster. Cena hit a top rope five knuckle shuffle which was really cool. Both men hit their finishers but got nearfalls. Both times got good pops. They repeated the spot from Summerslam 08 when Batista caught Cena in midair for a Batista bomb. I thought it was cool. Batista tried for a final Batista bomb but Cena made a nice counter and got him in the STF and made him tap."
