1119.06.2023hassan019.0FANTABULOUS stuff right here from this pairing that absolutely rules every single time they square off against each other. The technical maestro, the man of a 1000 holds in ZSJ versus the stone pitbull, the bad-ass hard hitter in Tomohiro Ishii. It had that dynamic of a battle between power (Ishii) and technique (ZSJ). From a psychological standpoint, one would presume that ZSJ would be coming in with loads of confidence as reflected by his brash demeanor throughout the tournament and even this match, and Ishii on the other hand somewhat desperate and looking to end the point deficit once and for all. It was a hard-fought battle with plenty of captivating and heart-stopping sequences. The back-and-forth exchanges were stiff, with ZSJ employing the upper cuts and Ishii using the forearm and elbow shots to rattle Zack . Zack did a tremednous job at working on the already damaged arm of Ishii. He exploited the injury however Ishii fought through the pain in the entire match and in the end would tear off the elbow pad showcasing his grit and determination as well as his heart of a warrior and would deliver the final shots ultimately putting Zack away for good with the brain-buster awarding him his first blemish on his point board. ****1/2

1802.11.2022devwil9.0Super competitive-feeling and dramatic. I think it's held back solely from the minor issue of it feeling like it's SLIGHTLY bogged down in Ishii's pace. I love Ishii and I don't think they needed to have a radically different match for five stars, but it did feel like ZSJ needed to slow down to Ishii's current speed. (And to be clear: Ishii is pretty compelling at just about any speed. I just don't think he's the guy for ZSJ to have a perfect match with.) 4.75*, for me.

2830.03.2022Okaro1439.0Great match. Excellent action but an apathetic crowd that ruined the mood. Ishii and ZSJ had a good chemistry and their wrestling styles clash quite well. I loved ZSJ's work on Ishii's arm. There was a part where Ishii intentionally rammed his shoulders against the apron to get the feeling on his targeted arm back which I thought was a nice touch. Great match unfortunately dull crowd reactions. ****1/2

3924.12.2021jboyaquar7.0Ishii was the one who very much helped ZSJ get over to NJPW fans in '17, first in LA and then in the G1, and here he sold most of the way for Z to help solidify him as a believable IWGP contender. They shared a few highlight worthy rapid move exchanges, near-falls, roll-ups, etc. I mean, how good is the pitbull at kicking out at 2 9/10'.' Real-good, but neither long-enough nor impactful enough (Ishii's cl prior to finisher, ) to enter my upper stratospheres. Admittedly, I was very surprised by the ending thus making my read of TSwifty's review a bit incredulous, 'the result was never really in doubt.' Same w/ 'Makai Club, ' Really' I mean, I know I'm typically not watching these matches until days-weeks-months til after they happen, but ZSJ does own more victories over Ishii than visa-versa. 3 2/5 - 1/2

4213.12.2021Mizzle Assault Ant8.0Excellent match overall, though I did not think it was quite as good as Sabre's other top G1 matches this year. Ishii really only has one mode and he does it well, the most interesting part was Sabre busting his arm up so he couldn't use it for big chops and other things, but it didn't quite seem to matter in the end. Still, a lot of impressive action here.

4623.10.2021Tamim9.0Very good match. Most of the times zack sabre jr dominates with his awesome technical stuffs. Also tried some strong style. Very good storytelling. Psychology was also perfect. But at the end zack dominated much, so he should be the winner neither than ishi. (****1/4)

5118.10.2021TSwifty7.0This was a very good match but i struggle to see the high praise. Ishii and Zack have had many matches together and by this point it doesn't feel like we're seeing anything new or unique. Of course what we're still seeing is very enjoyable and well executed. Zack is easily the MVP of the tournament by this point. He gave another strong performance working over Ishii's arm with some nasty submissions and joint manipulation. It's a basic story of Zack working a limb and Ishii fighting through the pain. All of their back and forth exchanges were really exciting and the selling was on point. The result was never in doubt which hurt the suspense a bit but doesn't hold back my rating much at all. ***3/4

6212.10.2021arrancar7.0Like Ibushi, Ishii is another of Sabre's done-to-death pairings, with them having had so many matches in the past few years that they would basically both be required to wrestle entirely different styles in order to produce anything truly unique. It was still fun seeing the standard striker-vs-grappler formula, especially with wrestlers as skilled in their respective styles as these two, but I couldn't help but feel that I'd seen this exact match so many times before. Sabre's arm-work and Ishii's corresponding arm-selling were both very good as expected. They did very well with their rapid big-move trades, but the clap crowd made a lot of it come across as far less impressive than it should have. It was a very enjoyable story seeing Ishii -- the hard man that he is -- overcome the extensive work on his him and fight back to end Sabre's run, giving him his first loss of this G1. Despite the run-of-the-mill structure, both men are great workers and managed to still make this a really good match. ***1/2

6710.10.2021GoldLiger9.0These two have the most interesting mix of styles every time, their chemistry is so natural because they come at matches completely differently. Ishii can beat the piss out of Zack, but Zack can neutralize that dominant arm. They really just went at it and had their normal match together with a few twists here and there, mostly in the result, but man do these two have such a great regular match together. Every time ZSJ or Ishii reverses something from the other it looks so good. Big fan of how the finish plays out, where determination and will beat out the cockiness Zack displayed at the start. Ishii also gets to show his unbelievably good selling at its best against Zack; the ways he portrays pain in his arm while trying to wake it up are so perfect. These two just can't miss, and together they have a guaranteed hit. ****1/4

6909.10.2021Makai Club 6.0I thought this suffered slightly from the known result. Perhaps the drama of the match would have sucked me in more if I weren? t to know tht Ishii would escape and eventually win the match. That can somewhat hurt the match. The match was basic in its structure and story. ZSJ attacked Ishii? s arm, using the ropes and his other nefarious tactics while Ishii worked towards making a comeback, fighting through the pin. Some of the closing stretch was predictably exciting but this averaged out at a solid level. ***
7008.10.2021Hercules9259.0Great match-up. Meshed well with the story that has been told so far this tournament. Ishii's fighting spirit is put to the test, and the results do not disappoint.

7306.10.2021BH629.0ZSJ could have ripped of Ishii's right arm that the later could have continued without any pain. Sick bout. Pure power againt technical mastermind, always a good mariage. Their chemistry is well-known, once again they put on a banger. Great final minutes, breathless ones.
7406.10.2021Dragon Fighter9.0This was unsurprisingly excellent. Their chemistry was great without a doubt. The story here was ZSJ worked over Ishii's arm and Ishii found his way to fight back. The performance of both men was truly fantastic. The near falls and move exchanging were smooth and dramatic as well. Thumb up.

7705.10.2021LariatNation9.0The match I had circled when A Block was announced. Tomohiro Ishii vs. Zack Sabre Jr. is one of my favorite rivalries of all time, which I say with no hyperbole. Every match has delivered at a four-star or better level, and every outing has proven just how good both of these guys are. Both men go outside of their comfort zones when they meet. Both show why they are among the best on the planet. And at G1 Climax 31, they continued that streak. This had storytelling from every angle imaginable, including the incredible work that ZSJ did on the forearm, wrist, elbow, and shoulder of Ishii. And the unmatched selling by The Stone Pitbull. It had callbacks to their previous matches, including the very hold that once made the unthinkable occur. And as the drama built, the sequences became more awe-inspiring, and the suspense boiled over, Ishii removed his damn elbow pad and I jumped out of my freaking seat. This match was EVERYTHING! That trade of back elbow strike attempts to gain control was among the best sequences of this tournament. Ishii giving ZSJ a taste of his own medicine was tremendous. And the closing sequence was truly Grade 1. Once again, an incredible match between unbelievable rivals. 4.5 stars, 9 out of 10. Another classic.
7805.10.2021cal90998.0Two masters of the craft put on a great match. Both men worked beautifully and given a more prominent spot on the card would no doubt have put on an even better performance. ZSJ worked the arm well and Ishii sold great. Would love to see another between these two. ****

8105.10.2021PuroresuLover9.0Cinder Block Tom beating the unstoppable wrestling machine Zack Sabre Jr warmed my cold heart. Dear Lord what an amazing match between two absolute chads! ZSJ being a cocky kid while Ishii just kicked the shit out of him and beat some sense into his brain was definitely magnific and great to watch. These two have an amazing chemistry and it's shown here. ****1/2

8605.10.2021pierreMinne9.0Another excellent match from Zack Sabre Jr in the G1 Climax 31. This guy is now in the 4 bests matches of the tournament so far to me. ZSJ was very arrogant with Ishii so Ishii calmed him with very impactful Chops when ZSJ could do nothing with his Uppercuts. ZSJ decided to take back the advantage by working Ishii's arm, and Ishii's selling during the whole match was excellent. It was so easy to understand that ZSJ would lose here, they did that very well, they built very well ZSJ's first loss in the G1 Climax 31. With all his armwork, ZSJ didn't arrive to do some lethal submissions towards the end, and Ishii found a good moment to finish him. Very brutal match and excellent storytelling here. ****1/4
