Perhaps the best match of The Undertaker's career, with just the right psychological tempo, great and unexpected counterattacks and nearfalls and a finish that really packed a punch. The match is so captivating that you completely forget about 'The Streak' because you are so emotionally invested in all of it as a spectator. Sit down, watch, and enjoy what these old warhorses are doing, because this is truly one of the best Wrestlemania matches of all time. And compared to the classic match the following year, this one might even be the better match by a hair. Must-see! |

In fact, it's a brilliant match between 2 of the biggest names the business has ever seen. Is it the best match ever, absolutely not. The build up of HBK bringing light to Undertaker's darkness is great, shame they only had about a month to build on it. Both men's entrances add to the build as well, really great stuff. For the first time tonight, the crowd feel like a Mania crowd. Split down the middle for both guys which only adds to the match. It is slow at the start with both guys trying to gain advantage. Terrible figure 4 & crossface by HBK, doesn't look good or painful at all. I always thought the Hell's Gate was a cool move, should have been protected more. Even HBK's moonsault looked bad, what's going on. And then the dive happens. Jesus, it's a mystery how Taker didn't get injured! As nasty as it is, it's the turning point for the match. Finishers, counters and spots galore now. Fantastic Tombstone and kick out spot (and all time reaction from Taker) made me yell out. An awful DDT that doesn't even connect, Shawn is having an off night when it comes to execution. The finish was amazing. This match is an all time great match. There is a few things (Cole & Lawler being bloodily awful on commentary, HBK being unusably sloppy, the match being uneventfully before the Hell's Gate) that stop it from being one of the greatest matches ever but it was an amazing match. |

I'll take it a step further and make the claim that this is the greatest match of all time. This has everything I want in a match. The story they told was masterfull. It starts as a cat and mouse game with HBK using his speed to his advantage. Taker obviously has the strength advantage but he has to earn every piece of offense he lands. Michaels on the other hand is laying into Taker with everything he has but can't keep him down. Taker can't believe he hasn't ended it. Both sell like crazy for the other which really adds to the match. The moves, counters and overall structure of the match were all impeccable. Even in a vacuum with no context, this match would still be a ten. The drama was next level and reached a climax at a few points; mainly the near count out, the kick out of the first Tombstone and the kick out of the last Sweet Chin Music. Even the history between the two adds to the match including the first HIAC match, the casket match that led to Shawn's first retirement and both of their memorable confrontations in the 2007 and 2008 Royal Rumbles. And the last thing that really made this match such an iconic moment was the crowd. The crowd was hotter for this than any match I've ever seen other than Rock/Hogan. I watch this match every year and each time I get goosebumps because of how good it is. I don't think I'll ever get tired of this match. |
