"It set up for a good match at WM. But still, unbelievably stupid - and a snapshot of what was wrong with the Attitude Era. These two have already demonstrated they're amazing at what they do, and because there can't be 5 minutes of an uninterrupted wrestling match on a wrestling program, the Outlaws have to come out and do what is now the famous dumpster bit. On television, it's played as a stunt gone tremendously wrong, the heels "going into business for themselves" (JR actually says this on commentary). In the arena, it plays to huge pops and elation from the audience. The audience is cheering as the heels push a dumpster with the babyfaces in it off the entrance ramp. They have to be reminded that they're not supposed to be cheering these guys as the ambulance comes out. Then, the remainder of the first hour is kayfabe stopped by the promotion. In the 30-45 minutes of airtime that this segment covers, less than a quarter of it is a wrestling match taking place. And it ends in DQ. And so does the next match. The beginning of a complete transformation of what is "the business" - for 100 years, it was the triumph of the face over the heel, and the journey that leads to such. For years after this moment in time, it was catchphrases, Jerry Springer-caliber drama, and objectification of women. And hey, it worked. And if I grew up with this, maybe I'd be popping too? So maybe I'm a fucking idiot?"
[7.0] "The match is pretty good with both Foley and Funk doing their thing. It is all the drama that ensues when The New Age Outlaws appear that makes this one particularly memorable."
[6.0] "This is a perfectly fine old-school hardcore match between two legendary wrestlers, but the action itself is fairly standard given the talents involved. What truly elevates this encounter is the brilliantly executed ending, with the drama unfolding when Mick Foley and Terry Funk are thrown off the stage inside a dumpster by the New Age Outlaws, leaving everyone questioning if the injuries were real. A moment that created an intense and raw atmosphere, making it seem as if the entire show had suddenly stopped. The involvement of everyone from the talent to the production crew, including Vince McMahon, added to the drama as the two wrestlers were stretchered out and taken away in an ambulance. An iconic moment and a memorable piece of Raw history. Without the dramatic conclusion, the match itself would be below average, especially considering the calibre of the performers involved."
[8.0] "Any Mick Foley vs Terry Funk match is going to be iconic. They really started the wave of hardcore matches on WWE with this one and the dumpster scene is hilarious but amazing television."
[7.0] "This was a crazy storyline angle to say the least with one of the most shocking endings to a match I have ever seen. Loved the pre match interview with the two showing the bizarre friendship they have going into the match where they just wanted a no holds barred match for the legacy they both created for themselves. The match plays out in a similar way to how the start of the Rumble match went where theres a lot of weapons and they stand there wanting the other guy to hit them and there's even a moment where they hesitate to do it. The brawl spills out to the ramp and it ends with a crazy spot where Foley dives off the tron into the dumpster with Funk inside and then the New Age Outlaws lock the top of it and push them off the stage. JR-"THERE'S PEOPLE IN THERE! "."
[10.0] "Absolutely a classic. The pre match interview with Mick Foley and Terry Funk "out of character" was very sweet and added a lot to this match and its importance to both guys. A friend vs friend story with no cliches or cheap drama. Just fun creative violence between two nuts who couldn't be more fun as their characters/alter egos. The ending is iconic with the NAO coming in with the dumpster spot, unbelievable heat on top of one of the most fun matches ever."
[5.0] "It was a decent no holds barred match, they used various weapons (trashcan, chair, ladder) to hurt each other and Foley hit a nice elbow drop from the titantron. I don't like the spot where Foley asks to be hit with a trashcan, Chainsaw Charlie refuses only to attack him from behind seconds later, it doesn't really make sense to me. I guess the story is they are friends but also love to hurt each other."
[6.0] "Match itself before the dumpster is pretty fun no holds barred match where they are just hitting each with weapons before they bring it to the stage. Jack hits the elbow drop into the dumpster and the rest is histoy.***1/4"
[6.0] "A very good extreme match, where the old school of hardcore with the new beat the crap out of each other at the beginning of the show. And it got a little scary when the outcasts of the "New age outlaws" threw both of them down while they were lying in the trash can."
[6.0] "I don't know if you rate this for the match itself or for the historic dumpster moment. The match itself was all right but it never got to the point you'd expect it to with Foley and Funk fighting it out in the ring, but it's still a classic and an incredible beginning to the show."
[6.0] "This has the famous moment of the dumpster being thrown off the stage with Cactus and Funk inside. Before that it's a pretty decent brawl with some good bumps and a funny moment with them rolling down the ramp trying to pin each other. The post match angle was obviously very special but the match itself was fairly good too."
