I feel like this would've been better if it was given a better time. 17 minutes is a good time, but the way these two were going, it felt like this would've lasted 30 minutes or something"

Despite it being clear that Omega was retaining, I felt this built the drama of Fenix nearly getting the upset extremely well."

[10.0] "The moves were so brutal, I loved them. Kenny & Fenix have superb chemistry together and the few spots they did together were all superb. Especially Fenix's Moonsault & German Suplex combo, or the one where Fenix does his Rebound Spinning Heel Kick, countered with a V-Trigger, Fenix gets right back up and kicks him! A great match!"

Lacked good structure but could've been significantly better if they turned if they turned up how insane the spots were. Just not a very compelling match in general aside from the couple cool things they did. Not a very moving match at all but nothing was outright bad or a negative asset to the match quality. Just nothing special."

ComplianceMike wrote on 05.05.2025:

The wear down of Fenix at the end, all the to the limp after three kickout really helped show how intense this one was. The commentary team really add a stain on this, over talking took away from the drama, which in the pandemic era you can't drown out to crowd noise."

The mid-air catch into the Tiger Driver was a brilliant counter. This series of matches is more on the down-low compared to some of Kenny's more acclaimed ones, but it still managed to produce lots of memorable moments. ****1/4"

There were some crazy spots, big moves and overall the two worked really well together which got the crowd going. Kenny was able to retain but Fenix put up a really good fight and almost won the title at points."

Kyle from TheMatchGuide wrote on 17.02.2024:

The action was no - stop for the most and some of the reverseals looked beautiful, obviously they should have kept on fighting until the 23/25 minutes mark due the match looked like cut and yes, Fenix actually kicked out the OWA. ****1/2"

I know this isn't the best match of either of these two, but this match will always hold a special place in my heart as the match that opened my eyes to a bunch of other wrestling companies. 5/5 and a 9/10."
Michael Morbius wrote on 04.07.2023:

Lots of great counters and fantastic sequences, my favorite were: v-trigger/kip-up and superkick and dive countered into a tiger driver. 9/10 - 4.75*/5*"

TSwifty wrote on 04.11.2022:
[8.0] "This was a great match and one of Omega's strongest AEW performances. I'm not shocked at how overrated it's gotten because it's a pure spotfest with innovative and dangerous moves. Omega's plays the heel bully perfectly here. Loved the beginning with Omega catching Fenix with a spike hurricanrana out of nowhere. Omega did some solid work on Fenix's back which of course Fenix didn't sell. They kept a very fast pace with lots of creative spots and sequences. One of AEW's biggest flaws is how their matches could have improper technique and weak looking moves. This wasn't a problem here as both men had fantastic impact on their strikes and moves. Great ending with Omega countering a dive into a Tiger Driver > OWA. ****1/4"

In fact it was a really great match with spectacular moves but also with some nasty hits (can we admit Fenix has one of the most brutal chops in AEW history? ). I know the outcome of this match was really predictable, but the match itself was great"

Omega needed this, the fans needed this and I needed this. Very spotty match that somehow worked extremely well with these two freak athletes. I Highly recommend this, it is a must see. ****3/4"
Prince Osborne wrote on 07.01.2022:
[9.0] "We know how Kenny worked in all his matches since his heel run - solid striking and counter striking, comebacks and limb work, the the "snapdragon suplex & V Trigger" spam and the OWA - bang! This is the same here but Fenix simply elevated the quality of this match with his unique and daredevil spirited aerial action that amazes most of us. I loved when these two were pitted against each other in the past and the love existed here too as nearly 17 minutes or so flew by so fast. An excellent spot rally to start AEW's 2021. 4.5 out of 5 stars!"

[10.0] "Absolute sleeper, and hidden gem of a match. It legitimately might be one of my favourite matches ever, I've watched it over and over again, and it's not often I do that with a match. Truly. Also, it's difficult to tell who's more impressive in this match, with both Kenny and Fenix putting on an absolute masterclass performance. Fantastic."
WrestleWire wrote on 28.08.2021:
[9.0] "Unbelievable. Rey Fenix is one of the most remarkable athletes in the history of professional wrestling. And this may have been his finest performance to date. There were certainly some issues to take, including there mysteriously being no referee counts on the outside, the Tornillo reversal that clearly didn? t connect, and the fact that Fenix visibly got his shoulder up on the OWA. But this was a phenomenal match nonetheless. They hit each other with everything imaginable and told one heck of a story of determination versus unrivaled skill. One of those matches that you truly wish could have gotten a packed house. Struggling with the rating, but it is undoubtedly the best male Dynamite match I have seen thus far. 4. 5 stars, 9 out of 10."
DemonKing84 wrote on 09.08.2021:
[1.0] "The match was great but c'mon that ending was ridiculous. Fenix blatantly kicked out of the OWA but nobody on the commentary said anything. Why the hell would you raise your arm like that when you know you're losing. What the hell man? That turned me off completely. If that wasn't a kick out, then I don't know what it was."
CoolKyle wrote on 30.06.2021:
[7.0] "Omega and Fenix did exactly what everyone expected them to, tearing the house down in a pay-per-view-quality main event that had the commentary team exclaiming they had never seen some of the moves or sequences before. Fenix looked every bit Omega's equal and came within seconds of winning the AEW title."
killowenskill wrote on 28.06.2021:
[6.0] "It wasn't bad. I consider their match at Northeast Wrestling to be complete garbage, and this one was definitely better. The beginning was strange, Fenix absolutely didn't sell two bumps on his head, even in the long run he didn't remember that his head hit the ring hard twice. But then the exciting part began and their interactions looked really great, that German suplex from Rey was the cherry on the cake. After this spot, I began to like the match less, it somehow slowed down, and their actions were dictated not by logic, but by the rest of the spots. When I believed that they had chosen minimalism (well, for today's North America it could well be considered minimalism), Kenny again remained true to himself and gave the match a dozen unnecessary strikes and dangerous bumps on the head. As it seems to me, the match never went to the climax, it just ended in its middle after a successful reverse. Whatever it was, but this is the best single defense in the reign of Omega (***1/4)."
Suzukigun wrote on 23.06.2021:
[8.0] "It's a great spotfest with some really good moments, zero doubt about the outcome, some stupid judgement by Fenix and a slightly controversial end. If this is a 5* match nowadays, there should be 300+ on the 5+ list at this point."
sonicBOOM wrote on 26.05.2021:

Four Pillars of Hell wrote on 17.05.2021:
[6.0] "I got exactly what I expected from this. Fenix is an incredible athlete and amazing high-flyer, but he is one of the worse sells in the company. He wrestles at one speed, and Kenny tried to match it the whole match. Both men used their flashiest offense to get pops from the nearly empty crowd, and Omega obviously won. Fenix took some gross looking bumps to the outside as well, which is bound to shorten his career alongside the injuries. Nowhere near the five-star range in quality."
Electric Wind God Fist wrote on 23.04.2021:

iLikePhen wrote on 01.04.2021:
[8.0] "I wouldn't call this a 5 Star match, especially since I don't really think there were smooth transitions between their most impressive moves, although I wouldn't even call it a proper spotfest, since the storytelling was really strong there. Fènix pulling out all the stops in order to defeat Omega, a man that quite always defeated him, while Kenny playing the vicious yet dynamic heel. Of course, Fènix wants to prove The Cleaner wrong, and in their biggest battle both men have an actual reason why they want to defeat one another. Overall, surely not a fiver, but a damn enjoyable match for sure (****)."

Fantastic main event, and easily one of the best Dynamite matches of all time. A great start for AEW in 2021. [****1/4]"

[9.0] "A great match. Lovely action and a great showcase for Fenix. There werent any botches in this match and it flowed really well. I think they could have even gone longer and an iron man match between these two wouldnt go a miss. They have really good chemistry and countered off each other perfectly. Id of liked an extra 15 minutes, more false finishes and maybe a submission or two but I know that neither wrestler specialises in submissions. I just think they could have done with a few more minutes to really let the finish sink in well as it was good but it felt almost as if it came too soon. This would probably have been a five and a half star match if they just let it out for a bit longer. Im going to give it ****4/5. It is better than most four and three quarter matches, but just falls shy of that five star rank. Again, great stuff. ****4/5"

[10.0] "I loved this match , it was short and explosive . Reminded me of Eddie/Rey at Halloween Havoc at 1997 . I'd say both are equal in quality , although they did what these guys did 23 years ago. The story telling was good along with decent enough psychology . I liked the babyface role played by Fenix and his high flying lucha libre offense is very creative and in human . Don did not play any heel shennanigan's which is a plus point. The match was very fast paced , hard hitting and intense . The outcome was never in doubt so the near falls did not really do much and another negative of the match was the backwork done by Kenny turned out to be futile as Fenix refused to sell it . The psychology was basic with Rey putting in extra effort due to what was on the line like it should be . I liked the no selling parts by Fenix which added to the fire and energy of this match . Examples include Fenix standing right up after the tornado DDT and the super kick , V trigger and another super kick sequence was legit the best one in the match . The spots were well executed and reversals were so crisp and enjoyable to watch . The crowd also added to the excitement of the match and was hotter than ever. The sequences I personally loved and appreciate were the snap dragon outside , hurricarana outside \, reversing one winged angel into a poison rana , double foot stomp on apron , moonsault attempt into a beautiful german , the part where Fenix chops Kenny and then Fenix tries to hit a springboard only to get chopped mid air , the frog splash with Fenix paying tribute to Eddie Guerrero , V trigger when Fenix tried to get in the ring and many other crazy stuff that I loved . This is definitely a early MOTY contender and certainly proves that Kenny is transitioning into the New Japan Kenny Omega. This was incredible wrestling content. ****3/4"

[9.0] "An early contender for Match of the Year, and I can't say I'm surprised. Kenny Omega is once again proving that he's one of the best in the world, going back to the singles match bangers as world champion that defined him, and Fenix is quite simply one of the best high flyers in the world today, bar none. The only thing that really held this match back are one, the constraints of TV time, and two, the fact that the ending was never really in doubt. No one truly thought that Fenix was going to win this match, and honestly, there wasn't a moment that truly made me bite on it. But the athleticism, the energy, and the hammering offense more than made up for that, and seeing Fenix as the plucky babyface against the Winnipeg weasels was pretty great."

That does not, however, mean that this match was by any means, bad. In-fact it was a really solid TV-banger with some creative spots as you'd expect from these two, along with a surprisingly great show of storytelling by Fenix. Still though, 5 stars is way too high, (***3/4)"

Very awkward looking top rope tornado springboard. I don't even know what the hell was that supposed to be - an offensive move or a defensive? Only thing I know, he got striked by Kenny right away and he got knocked out. Overall, it was a good match and I recommend watching."

Omega looked a little off early on, but that opened for Fenix to look like a million bucks, and he took the spotlight like a pro with some absolutely spectacular stuff. Omega looked better once he got warmed-up, but this was always Fenix's match to shine, both booking wise and as a performer. The final crushes looked devastating, well fitted for the ending. Only wish the match had a more big-match-feel, but they certainly gave it a big match effort."

I was expecting a match with impressive spots and aggression, and that's what we got. They're two fascinating wrestlers who always work very well together, and this was definitely their best bout. So much happened that I won't be able to say what I liked best but I want to underline their sense of timing for all the incredible spots they did, there were no mistakes and no inaccuracies, everything was done to perfection. Again it was clearly not a perfect match but it was a stellar TV contest between two amazing wrestlers. I preferred Bálor vs. O'Reilly a little bit so it wasn't my match of the year so far but I loved it. Great job guys."
