[7.0] "This is a defense of Flair's NWA World Heavyweight title. This is my first exposure to Sawyer, brother to Buzz, and he delivered a strong performance. The first fall shows the babyface with an advantage, from the early chain work to a later, more fisticuff-prone stretch. Sawyer goes for a small package, but Flair reverses it into a pin of his own to win the first fall. The second fall has a similarly technical start, but it's where Flair eventually takes control, and where this match really congeals. Sawyer gets to be the underneath babyface, and it's here where a detail that commentary made sure to note early on - Sawyer also uses the figure-four, so he claims he has developed a counter for it - pays off, when Sawyer can't kick Flair off of him but turns it into a small package, this time successful. A short but effective final fall between two desperate men proves a fitting conclusion. Flair can't risk another figure-four attempt, while that very move is the best shot Sawyer has... until he gets it in, and Flair reaches the ropes. I loved the setup for the move though, as Flair goes for one Harley Race knee drop too many, and Sawyer grabs his calf to set up the hold. Ultimately, the champ retains when the challenger hits a second-rope Thesz-style body press with too much momentum, and Flair rides it out to get the pinfall. ***3/4"
