1319.06.2025YOURTrex10.0As someone who only got into Japanese wrestling in late 2024, my impression of Yoshinobu Kanemaru was always 'that washed-up veteran'--while I knew KENTA's legendary status in his prime. That changed completely with this match, which just became my favorite watch of the month. KENTA delivered a masterclass in revolutionary junior heavyweight wrestling. His style fused traditional Japanese fighting spirit with blistering junior division speed--a genuinely unhinged performance that lives up to his myth. But Kanemaru? What a revelation. Though not on KENTA's level, he matched his frenetic pace move-for-move, pulling off legit OMG moments--those vicious brainbusters and diving DDTs were nothing like the cautious vet I'd imagined. This classic just convinced me: I need to revisit KENTA vs. Naomichi Marufuji soon. Maybe after digesting more classics, I'll fully grasp how pivotal this era was. For now? Pure adrenaline
1419.05.2025HandrexBullet9.0This match rocks, Kenta versus Kanemaru for the JR gold. This Kanemaru is another wrestler compared to his Suzuki-gun, heel persona. Thsi match is chaos, is a hard-hitting match with a Tokyo Dome on fire, insane match with a lot of crazy Kickouts, crazy kicks and slaps, this KENTA is amazing, one of the best in that time. Crazy to think that this match is for the JR championship because this match was better than the GHC heavyweight bout. The second best match in that night. The best match in Kanemaru singles career. ****/50
1519.05.2025igskillfart8.0(4*) I honestly wasn't feeling the beginning and the middle of this match, it felt boring and too slow. But towards the end of the middle is where everything started to get better, insane kickouts, awesome exchanges, and a very physical match. KENTA is one stiff fucker I will give him that.

2206.01.2025NoOne210.0It was a super match. I say super again. First, Kenta's match was working very well on Kanemaru's hands and Kanemaru was also doing a great job. And with a mistake from Kenta, Kanemaru was able to catch the momentum of his match and started destroying Kenta's neck and head in every way. The final minutes of the match were full of great moves and a lot of great sequences were created, and Kenta and Yoshinobu hit every move they had never done before, but they all ended with a kickout.

2413.12.2024PontiffMJ7.0This match certainly has some bright spots however the 10-12 minutes of filler in the middle of the match, and the excessive kickouts towards the end of the match really hurt the flow of this match and brought it down quite a bit in my eyes. I'm very rarely bothered by kickout heavy matches but this is one of the few that I felt took it a bit too far with them. That being said I thought KENTA was very strong here, bringing a cocky attitude and some incredibly stiff strikes and pinpoint Busaiku Knees. Overall a pretty fun match, but one that fails to live up to its' reputation due to some big flaws with match structure & pacing. 3.5*
2508.12.2024cactus7.0This starts off incredibly hot, but loses focus until it's time to get their shit in during the nutty finishing stretch. Kanemaru was fairly uninteresting whilst working on top. The overabundance of close calls and the no selling spots turned me off and reminded me that this style of wrestling isn't exactly my cup of tea. That being said, the reaction these two got was incredible and they certainly left my jaw touching the floor with some of the stuff they would come out with.

2911.10.2024Zak229.0Proper title match, for the duration of this match these two make you feel as if the GHC Jr Heavyweight belt is the most important belt in wrestling. Its a damn intense, physical and fast paced match with some great spots (fisherman's suplex off the top rope, leg drop over the guard rail etc). My only complaint is that there were in my opinion, too many false finishes and one too many moments of popping up from a devastating move. But look, this is damn great and both lads show you what NOAH is about.

3718.07.2024Oswuold9.0Compared to nowadays Kanemaru this was all another wrestler. This was a pure war, and he definetely was ready to fight this kind of match against someone as stiff as '00 KENTA. The bout was full of violent strikes and bumps and KENTA kicking out the third Brainbuster was definetely incredible. The ending seemed pretty weak, other than that great fight. ****1/2

4418.04.2024DENDY10.0Often Jr. Heavyweight wrestlers can put on bouts which focus on acrobatics and choreographed spots, that can be beautiful and elegant, but this is a whole different kettle of fish. Both men clearly want to prove something here, both men who wouldn't have made it far in Babas AJPW due to their size, and clearly want to demonstrate that Jr wrestling can be the most exciting, intense and fast paced brutal stretch of technical work, stiff strikes and power moves youll find. Both men sell like hell here, demonstrating really brilliantly how working body parts should be done; there are also some brilliant spots that play into KENTA struggling with his neck and Kanemarus arm failing him. While this is exactly what youd expect from KENTA, Kanemaru might actually be the better competitor here, with some incredibly unique offence. Its easy to forget just how incredible Kanemaru was considering the different style of competitor he is today. There isnt a dull moment in this bout and the closing stretch is truly nerve wrecking. On a card with 3 of the greatest matches of all time, this one can often be forgotten, but its incredible and truly worth going out of your way to watch.

This match really made kanemaru an actual great wrestlers after watching his new japan run which is mediocre. It's also sad to see kenta being wasted on NJPW and this match proves how great both are

6704.10.2022GonzoAppreciator10.0My experience with Kanemaru has mostly been with his New Japan run so I was blown away by how intense he was here. KENTA was incredible here and wrestled a great babyface performance against Kanemaru.
6816.09.2022Mizzle Assault Ant10.0There's very little like KENTA at his peak, as this match clearly showed yet again. Kanemaru did great as well, it takes two to tango, but prime KENTA has got to be one of the greatest strikers in wrestling history.

7210.06.2022PuroresuLover9.0KENTA and Yoshinobu Kanemaru on their fucking prime is absolute balls to the walls! There's nothing to say about this match that hasn't been said yet! These two simply went to town in here, delivering a fantastic performance and giving us one of the most intense and fast-paced matches of all time. And the crowd here is absolutely on fucking fire all the fucking time, they were really loving it, and so was I. Probably the best Uncle Nobu match ever. Still worth a rewatch. ****1/2

7408.04.2022UWF Rules Enthusiast10.0This is probably the most intense I have ever seen Kanemaru be. KENTA gave a great showing as well. The work was super smooth and intriguing from start to finish. This was one of the greatest junior heavyweight singles matches that did not take place in NJPW.

7708.03.2022Geo939.0An awesome match between Yoshinobu Kanemaru and KENTA for the GHC Junior Heavyweight Title. The match wasn't rushed for the majority of its runtime as it built to an incredible exciting climax between the two. Both guys are amazing athletes, and there was plenty of great selling as well!
7814.02.2022Ameridragon10.0Absolute all time classic, still mindblowing nearly 17 years later. The latter half of the match especially is insane, even though they keep trying to throwing finishing moves at each other neither one can keep the other down while a melting hot Tokyo Dome crowd is losing their minds. Just go watch it, absolutely great.
7905.02.2022Logue389.0The first part of this match made little sense to me. KENTA shows that he is brash and psyched up, and instantly goes way too hard and way too fast at Kanemaru. But then, suddenly he's working the arm methodically like a vet. At some point though, the beginning of the match becomes irrelevant, and it becomes a sequence of finisher after finisher. While the first part of the match is irrelevant to the last sequence, it does serve to create a contrast that makes the last segment more exciting. In contrast to the previous match on the card, the big, high-impact offense here actually felt high-impact, and there were times where they let it breathe so the crowd could get more into it. A more relevant first half of the match would elevate this into one of my all-time favorite matches, and KENTA has better matches; however, the finishing sequence makes you forget about the first half, it still feels like KENTA, and the crowd response makes this match feel huge.

8110.01.2022benny5bellys9.0KENTA wins the GHC jr title for the first time by essentially trying to kick, knee and suplex the soul out of Kanemaru who is equally brilliant in this. The closing stretch is outrageously good ****1/2
8202.11.2021Shadow Explosion10.0
8330.10.2021WrestleWire9.0A seminal moment in professional wrestling history. KENTA trying to win the GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career. Yoshinibu Kanemaru, already a three-time holder of the belt in the midst of the most dominant reign the title had seen thus far. And with Kanemaru masterfully decimating the neck of KENTA during the first 15 minutes of this match, one would almost call this another great display of strategy that warrants an 8 out of 10. And then one of the greatest sequences in wrestling history occurred to send this match into overdrive and this crowd into an all-time frenzy. If nothing else, watch this match and see how KENTA does move after move that your favorite American wrestler likely adopted from him. Or just enjoy one of the most important matches and moments in modern wrestling history. 4.5 stars, 9 out of 10. A seismic shift of a match. At the Tokyo Dome. In front of 62, 000 people.

8917.07.2021Stern J9.0This match is 1 of 2 that made me a fan of Puro (the other being Kobashi vs Sasaki from the same event) and what a belter of a match. It's obvious that KENTA is being set up as the future face of NOAH but Kanemaru is the wall he must face to reach the next step and he kicks (AND BY FUCK DOES KENTA KICK) his way to the title but as i said Kanemaru is the current champion and didn't get there by being "ok" as he puts in a very very strong effort as a defending champion who has to bust out multiple finishers and avalanche moves to have a chance to retain but in the end it comes down to this: KENTA WILL BEAT YOU TO DEATH Even if KENTA looses his opponents barley make it out alive at this point so this was an eye opening match for me, that final Busaiku Knee was disgusting, the few GTS's thrown were brutal and any strike from KENTA felt like he was just shooting on Kanemaru. A belter and worth the watch for anyone looking for a nice crowning moment to look back on for KENTA's career (also nice to look back on for Kanemaru as his NJPW run is just... nothing). 4. 5 Stars.

9230.05.2021pierreMinne9.0What a fantastic match. This is in this type of match where the no sells are absolutely not bothering me. This one is absolutely incredible and one of the bests Jr matches I've ever seen. The strikes are so impactful, it's just wow. Kanemaru was incredible back in 2005 and Kenta even more, we couldn't have a bad match but I didn't expected such an outstanding one. ****3/4

10023.07.2020EUJBFTY10.0Kenta and Kanemaru were some of the best junior heavyweights in the world during the 2000s and this match is a prime example of that. Both wrestlers brought it their all and pulled no punches.
