Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon

[8.0] "Some McMahon family drama will always be a guilty pleasure of mine. It's so silly yet so fun! This being a Street Fight and Mick Foley being the referee is cool, and as expected, this is chaos. Shane hands his father an ass-whoopin', Stephanie and Trish have a brawl of their own, sedated Linda is all kinds of silly, and Vince making her watch him beat down their son is some next-level madness... The pop for Linda standing up and hitting Vince with a low blow is crazy! As a match, it's not pretty, but there's some good spots, and most of all the drama and character work is excellent, and Vince is simply hilarious. Shit like this can only come from the mind of a maniac like Vince, and it's pure entertainment at its silliest, and I enjoy it. ***3/4"

[4.0] "Why the hell is it rated so high ? More of a segment than an actual match. 1) Shane hit vince 2) Table spot 3) 10 minutes of drama 4) Trashcan spot. That's it. I think that's part of the WM 17 syndrome, where everything needs to be hugely overrated."

[7.0] "Excellent work by everybody involved in this match. It had so much heat and the crowd responded to it perfectly. The booking was beautiful with Shane annihilating his father before the awesome bump off the top rope onto the Spanish announce table that led to Vince controlling the match. Following that came Trish turning on Vince, a catfight between Trish & Stephanie, Vince's attack on Foley, Vince putting Linda in the ring for the conclusion with Linda getting her revenge, Foley getting his revenge for Vince firing him as commish and Shane finishing it off in memorable fashion. Even though you could see it coming a mile away the kick to the groin that Linda did to Vince was awesome. I never thought Linda McMahon could generate such a pop, but they did it. From a pure wrestling standpoint it wasn't great. As a story, though, it was the culmination of a big angle that ended with the babyfaces on top. Sure, it was overbooked in some ways, but it was great to see the evil heel get his ass kicked in the end."

[6.0] "Weird match. The work is average at best, the story isn't interesting, there's long gaps in the action, yet it's still enjoyable."

[8.0] "I wouldn't call this a great wrestling match, but it was a hell of a sports entertaining one. So good with the story layers playing out here as they did and everyone getting their licks in on Vince. This is where the show really took off. Trish slapping Vince was the moment where I understood the difference between wrestling and entertainment. And this was entertainment. That pop when Linda stood up. Magnificent."

[7.0] "If you want a spotfest and a knockdown, drag-out brawl between father and son, then this is the match for you. The biggest pop of the night is when Linda stood up after being drugged and sedated towards the end of the match and giving the low blow to Vince. And SHANE WON!"

[7.0] "This is pretty solid and it's not due to great wrestling. There really isn't much of that, but it's chaos and tells the story they wanted to tell. Cool spots with Shane jumping through the announce table and across the ring."

[5.0] "[2.75*] As good as you might expect! . This match really surprised me; or at least me that I didn't expect this to be "good for what it wanted to be" this match actually succeeded if we looked at it in its entirety direction, and that's just to be fair. This was entertaining to be honest. The audience loved it and they were into it as well as I did, so who really cares ? , I also think it's a funny match so it's a really was joyful for me, even that I wasn't into their story before watching this (lmao) , but this really stole my attention , so no.. it really didn't needed to be more than it was. Stephanie's Dady's girl shirt is hilarious, lmao, my god what a joyful match, lol."

[8.0] "Obviously this is not absolutely amazing wrestling. Really this shouldn't of worked since it is two non-wrestlers having a match on WrestleMania, they are father and son, and their mother/wife is drugged for most of the match. But what made this work is the selling of Vince, and the fans buying into it. If the fans didn't care, this would've sucked. They pulled it off. Vince is just awesome to see get his ass kicked anyways so there is that."

[7.0] "Not exactly a great match but a fantastic spectacle to watch play out that was extremely entertaining and the crowd was into it from start to finish. The Coast To Coast finish looked fantastic and everyone involved put on great performances and Linda got probably one of the biggest pops of the night when she finally got up and kicked Vince in the nuts. Shane took some huge bumps but that was to be expected. Solid 3.5 stars."

[9.0] "This show really did have a bit of everything as this match was just pure WWF Attitude Era soap opera absurdity and yet its so entertaining in the way it plays out. Shane gets wiped out in a classic all or nothing spot where Stephanie moves Vince off the top of the announce table as Shane just goes crashing through it. Trish wheels a 'comatose' Linda to the ring as instructed, but then turns face and slapped Vince and then she has a big catfight with Stephanie out of the arena. Vince goes comically evil where he wipes out Foley with a chair and starts moving around a limp Linda and sits her in the corner and he trash talks her while he hits Shane with garbage cans. I can't believe the pop Linda got when she rises off the chair and kicked Vince in the balls. Honestly that was some Oscar worthy acting from her all match and then Foley beats the crap out of Vince and Shane does the classic coast to coast move on Vince. This obviously isn't a good wrestling match, but as a pure spectacle it's amazing to watch."

[10.0] "I've always had a huge soft spot for this one, and having been lucky enough to live through the build-up will definitely have helped. Months and months of absurd soap opera storytelling unspooling into the perfect climax. A pop that huge for someone standing up from a chair speaks for itself with regard to the investment achieved. In terms of the McMahon storylines, which would become much more annoying very quickly, this was the masterpiece."

[9.0] "One of my favorite WrestleMania matches of all time. It's an overbooked masterpiece with a deep story. Everyone did great and we the very first Coast to Coast from Shane (yes we've seen RVD do it in ECW but that's different). Linda had some good acting skills and we could've seen the WCW guys attack Vince but motherfucking Shawn Stasiak had to tell the media."

[7.0] "Say what you will sometimes an excellent in ring match falls under "sports entertaining" matches. This was one such example. I was thoroughly sports entertained. Linda Mcmahon with the performance of the year, lol. Somehow this was less of a street fight than the the hardcore match."

[5.0] "The beginning is truly awful, I think. Everything is shaky, especially the use of objects. The elbow drop, however, is striking. I don't know the story, but the overbooking seemed so pointless and ridiculous. In fact, if we judge the match on the wrestling, I think there's really nothing to learn from it."

[8.0] "Street fight was a perfect platform for Vince to somehow deliver a good wrestling match and he accomplished it 3 times at the Showcase of The Immortals. McMahon's family feud at probably their pick, really fun bout to watch."

[9.0] "There are layers to the absurdity of this soap opera and I'm here for it. The McMahon's are reprehensible in both reality and fiction, and they sure know how to capitalise on it in the most entertaining of ways. The in-ring portion of the match is of course the weakest, although Shane's missile dropkick for the finish was surprisingly good."

[7.0] "This is male soap opera to a max. Linda raising to an ovation is a moment to remember. Both Vince and shane throw everything in their way to make this match as entertaining as possible"

[7.0] "very entertaining sport entertainment match. Not much of a match just a few crazy spots and a few good story beats that wrap things up real nicely. 3.25 stars"

"This Street fight is a very barbaric one. I have seen this ppv before and the match gets better every time I see it. 8.56"

[8.0] "[4.0*] The best match of the night until this moment. Actually, this was more of an angle than it was a match, but it fucking ruled nonetheless. Vince and Shane were on a crazy rivalry where Shane bought WCW before him, so this was a WWF vs WCW type of match, with the whole Linda/Trish stuff, which even had Stephanie and Foley involved. Complete madness. The match starts and Shane already does a crazy bump with the elbow drop from the third rope to the announcers table that set the crowd on fire. Then, Linda McMahon begins her run as the absolute star of the match. She was in vegetative state or something and she was not able to move or do facial expressions. Vince was humiliating her throughout the whole match, until Trish turns on him for an insane pop. She begins a brawl with Stephanie, who was trying to interfere the match. She slapped Foley and the three of them ran away lmao. Vince put Linda in a chair on the ring and I swear to God that my only desire for this match was for Linda to pull off a miracle, get on her feet and attack Vince. They kept filming her face for the whole match and she was just there like a statue, I busted myself laughing. When the miracle finally occurred and she got on her feet, the pop was tremendous. She gave Vince a low blow and Foley started to punch Vince too. People were just nuts, by far the loudest match of the night until the TLC. Shane then put the trash can on Vinces face and did a crazy Coast-to-Coast for the win. This match literally defines Sports Entertainment and was a perfect pick for a Mania mid-card. Everyone had the time of their liver. It ruled A LOT."

[10.0] "I'm not a proud woman. This storyline, this match, this whole production is absolutely disgusting trash and is even more reprehensible knowing what we know now. The issue is, I also know myself. This is MY disgusting, reprehensible trash. Vile wrestling, black pill graps."

[3.0] "Beginning of the match is just awful. Shane does a nice baseball slide, so i'll give him that. They basically throw potatoes at each other and then Shane hits his dad with a cardboard sign and chokes him with an extension cord. Shane does a jumping clothesline off the barricade. Doesn't look good but i respect that he tried it I guess? Then genuine respect for the nice elbow drop through the table by Shane, that was pretty sick. Then Trish come down with Linda, Trish slaps Vince, then Trish and Stephanie go at it. Mick Foley pulls Steph off and then Stephanie slaps her as Mick and Trish pursue her down the ramp, and Trish chases her backstage. Vince starts to go after Linda but Foley stops him, then Vince hits Foley with a chair a few times. Vince then rolls Linda into the ring, puts a chair in the ring, sits Linda down in it, gets Shane from ringside who has been down this entire fuckin time, lol, gets a trash can out, hits Shane over the head with it in the ring. He basically beats the shit out of Shane twice, but the third time Linda gets up and kicks him in the balls, then Shane does the coast to coast onto the trash can, again nicely done by Shane, all credit to him, Shane pins his dad for 3. I mean the actual wrestling part of it is shit, but big credit to Shane for his two big spots to pull them off. But jesus this was boring and so stupid to have for Wrestlemania, and the entire storyline was wildly distasteful and hard to watch."

[7.0] "[***3/4] A mainly story-driven match of Vince's actions catching up with him. Stephanie pulled Vince off from Shane top-rope elbow drop into the announce table. Then melodramatic stuff happened with Trish beating up Stephanie, Vince beating up Foley with a chair, then Vince setting up the possible finish. The great NO DQ stuff really took place after Linda low-blowed Vince. Foley then beat up Vince, then Shane did the legendary coast-to-coast dropkick to Vince through a garbage can. Damn good stuff."

[7.0] "This was crazy man, Shane and Vince went out here and beat the shit out of each other, this was so entertaining it was a blast to watch i loved it"

[8.0] "[4*] If it isn't overbooked, it isn't vince. This match is hilarious, Linda McMahon for sure is the MVP of this match, the fact that she contained the straight face doing this is impressive as hell, every time the camera was on her she didn't blink"

[8.0] "[4.0*] Shane McMahon and Vince McMahon were very entertaining to watch, a family feud based on how the father treated the mother, leading to the son rebelling against it. When the match starts, you can already tell it's going to be epic because Vince immediately lands several solid punches on his son, and Stephanie delivers a huge slap to her brother. After that, Shane starts to dominate and destroy his own father with punches, strikes, and the Kendo Stick while the crowd goes wild. However, everything began to change when Shane went for his famous Elbow Drop on the table, but Stephanie made him miss, and at that moment, the tide started to turn. Trish brought Linda out to watch everything, and then she betrayed Vince and started fighting with Stephanie. There was a scuffle between Vince and Foley, who was the referee, and all this while Linda, who was paralyzed (which, by the way, was the best part of the match), delivered an incredible performance acting as if she was in a vegetative state, and her "resurrection" was even better. In the end, everything was beautifully done when Foley helped Shane, and we got to witness the first-ever Coast to Coast."

[9.0] "A really great match between both father and son with great action and spots, but it's the insanely fantastic storytelling and drama between the whole McMahon family that help carry this match to being both special and entertaining."

[8.0] "I really liked this match. Having it be a street fight suited both guys, as I think if it was just a regular match it would've sucked. They knew exactly what they were doing making it a street fight and it paid off. Foley as a referee is... just kinda there. It's cool to see him, but aside from that, Shane & Vince really do a lot of the memorable stuff. That coast to coast to Vince at the end was a thing of beauty, just the sound it made when Shane hit the trash can was perfect. Linda getting up and kicking Vince right in the family jewels was great too. Overall very memorable, anybody expecting this to be a 5* classic needs to keep their expectations in check. For what both guys are capable of, they really delivered and put on a fantastic match."

[6.0] "Not my favorite street fight by any means, and the McMahon storylines don't do a ton for me (outside of Austin and Rock stuff) but this was pretty fun. Vince getting his ass kicked is always at least satisfying. I think Shane has done way better hardcore matches than this, but it was still good."

[7.0] "This match was 100% an entertainment based match but it was still really fun. You shouldn't base ratings on in-ring or entertainment in my opinion, it should be based on whether you enjoyed it, and you can combine entertainment and wrestling based on your enjoyment. With that in mind I really enjoy this match, it was not a technical masterpiece, however it was an amazing storytelling match."

[9.0] "If you rate this match purely on a technical basis, you're doing it wrong. Sorry not sorry. There is nothing wrong with having a match that is purely an angle, ESPECIALLY a street fight. This match is honestly awesome, and all you have to do is look at the crowd in Houston to see how great it was. The greatest Wrestlemania of all time, and one of its biggest pops is Linda standing up. I really shouldn't have to say any more than that. So much great about this match imo."

[8.0] "I want to review because I enjoy writing my justifications for my future self, but everyone already said it. This match is all hype and story, and the wrestling was clunky at times and non-existent at others, but darn if I was not entertained. Watching Vince is uncomfortable, but when he got his comeuppance, it was cathartic. I am lukewarm about Foley getting retribution physically while he was officiating, but it was justified."

[1.0] "I mean, its sports entrainment, an angle, a soap drama as many call it. The in ring stuff is obviously not very good there wasn't much to expect. The storyline attached to this match is kinda cool but I wasn't too terribly invested in it and the stuff with Stephanie is kind of uncomfortable to watch knowing what we know now. Theres a monster pop for Linda getting up and Foley beating up McMahon man is good regardless of the storyline or match. The final move that Shane does is cool. But overall, I don't see this as much of a match, and I wasn't a fan of it."

[8.0] "One of the best examples of in-ring storytelling carrying a match to the rating it deserves. While the in-ring work itself was good, with Shane doing Shane things, the story being told is really what makes this match. An absolutely overbooked clusterf**k that made me enjoy every single minute."

[7.0] "The match might not be the greatest but definitely delivers in the sports entertainment department. Linda standing up gets an enormous pop from the crowd and Vince winning was great."

[7.0] "This is honestly so bad its great. The in ring part is abysmal but the story and actions outside are what make this match. Shane going through the announce table, the classic horror trip is Stephanie tries to escape Trish, Linda McMahon outside/inside the ring, very entertaining. The ending had you really captivated"

[7.0] "Chaos and dumb drama, the McMahon family entertaining at their best, and with spots like the one on the Spanish Announcement Table I'm okay with the rating of 7 a satisfactory match to see [***1/4]"

[6.0] "It's all dumb drama but I gotta admit that it's really well put together. The absurd of some things is just well balanced to make you care about the action and at the same time not think about it only as silly bollocks. A lot of build from the previous weeks comes in play and because of that it works, plus Linda getting up from the chair is just fantastic and the pop it got was ridiculous."

[7.0] "This is stupid dumb trash and I love it. This is what defines the term sports entertainment to me. An over the top ridiculous storyline about a family imploding, drugging people, attempting murder, company warfare, its all so much and its so stupid and awesome. The action is not even wrestling, its just a fun extreme brawl, and Mick Foley being there actually elevated the match even more. Thank god Shane won by the way, hes easily the best of the McMahons."

[8.0] "The Finale of the McMahon family drama. A great ending that had no reason being this fun and good. Steph and Trish drama foley getting involved shane taking big bumps and the Huge pop Linda got at the end just for standing up. Fantastic spectacle 4/5"

[5.0] "I think the story heading into this match is really disgusting and one of the worst stories of the attitude era. I like how over Shane is cause I needed to be reminded of that after how horrible he got in recent times. The match itself is whatever I guess, nothing all too notable besides the awesome coast to coast that finishes it."

[5.0] "An okay match. Well... Not really a match more a cinematic soap opera. The best part of it was the story throughout the whole match and the worst part of the match was the wrestling... Shane really carried the match with his spots and the ending was pretty cool"

[10.0] "Pure and utter soap opera wrestling at it's finest this match is endlessly entertaining and fun, the moment Linda stand up lives in my brain the catharsis when she sticks it to Vince is incredible. I haven't watched this match in a good while so with the Vince stuff it probably hasnt aged well on a further rewatch but simply from memories of the feelings this match produces i have to give it 5 stars."

[8.0] "I would give it a 9 if it wasn't for the history of Vince McMahon in real life. Hell, maybe eight is a bit too high. It's just hard to watch this match the same way I did in the past, simply because of how despicable of a person he is. Asides from that, It's honestly incredible how good this match considering both of these McMahons aren't really known for good wrestling, and mostly known for the soap opera. At least Shane McMahon can do high spots. But what really sells this match for me is the buildup to that massive pop. If it wasn't for that, and Linda McMahon kicking Vince in the fucking nuts, I wouldn't rate this match so high."

[5.0] "This was okay. Your WWE melodrama of the Attitude Era. It's a bit too much looking back today. Back then, the McMahons were integral parts of storylines. But there's been so much overexposure of the McMahons over the years, it feels like you're glad you don't have to watch their mess again. This is simply a storyline than a match, but that's expected."

[8.0] "This is just pure fun, from the wild Shane spots, to the pop with Linda getting up from her chair, everything was built perfectly, the match was structured just amazingly."

[8.0] "Everything about this match was ridiculous but it was entertaining as hell. This is a prime example of the Attitude Era not necessarily having the greatest in ring wrestling but still being great."

[5.0] "I'm sorry, but I wasn't really invested in the story of the match, and that's pretty much all this match was. I felt like it really dragged on, even though the coast to coast was a super cool spot, the rest of the match just felt like they were sloppily using weapons without anything in between that. Didn't really enjoyed the whole Linda angle either."
