"This is the worst of both Piper and Hogan, avoid at all costs, unless you enjoy bad "brawling" between two 100 yr old guys. Crazy 'cause they had a quite good match months earlier. No wonder WWF had a field day calling out WCW for being land of grandpas waiting for paycheck. Lazy boring, long match. Finish made everyone look stupid except, you guessed it, Hogan. I like Hulkster, but goddamn is he impossible to defend here. In my opinion, this match ended Piper's credibility as major main event game changer and made people crave for end of Hogan's reign ever more. Think of any cheap move wrestler can do and this one is compilation of it, and then some and nothing else."

The most technically complex thing they did was a bear hug, despite the fact that neither of them took a bump so I'm not sure why they needed to resort to a rest hold unless they were both totally out of shape. The Savage turn was the most predictable thing of all time; they didn't even try to make it suspenseful given Savage came to the ring in a black and white jacket. Wow. I wonder who he's going to side with? ! Crap. Crap. Crap. 1/4*"

Even the commentators weren't sure what happened, let alone the live audience that didn't understand anything. Up to that point they were doing a good job and fans were really invested, chanting loudly for Piper. The swerve could have been done a little better though."

A really flat finish that ends with Savage deciding he wants to be Hogan's lackey again but a heel this time, and a screwjob that is not played out because Hogan decided he wanted to win clean even though everyone else is desperately trying to pretend he didn't."

[3.0] "Piper trained for this match by living like a homeless guy on Alcatraz for a week or something and Heean makes a dumb comment about how he can smell Piper even when they are 50 yards away. Two old guys make vague attempts to punch each other then Sting and Savage who have been hanging out in the rafters for weeks walk to ringside. Sting leaves but Savage hangs around then helps Hogan retain the title. The Hogan/Piper matches from 97 were just terrible! Piper was way past his prime and he wasn't great in the ring to begin with and Hogan was in super lazy boy mode. Throw in the overbooking with Savage joining the NWO and being Hogan's side kick again and you got a recipe for a lousy main event!"

I enjoyed this more than their Starrcade match because the style better suited their feud and their current ring shapes. The finish is executed fine, but commentary messed up the call and made it more confusing for audiences imo. This is still however, far from a masterpiece."

Derek Joists wrote on 30.01.2022:

Add to that the worst overbooked bullshit ending, clearly done because nothing else worked for Hogan, brother, and you have another terrible main event."

Bottom of the barrel Hogan match it looked like two homeless crack addicts trying to fight only spot that I felt looked real was the sleeper hold and then whoa wild finish with the brass knucks Brother! Bullshit galore!"

Piper never took any bumps, looked like he even no-sold a leg smash against the ring by Hogan, and Piper's main offense was eye pokes and punches. Much worse than their Starrcade match, oh and the finish was overbooked (which is probably a given at this point) and confusing."
Mizzle Assault Ant wrote on 30.07.2020:
