The referee bump and Nick Aldis' involvement effectively set up Aldis versus. Gunther and Punk versus. Cody for SummerSlam, though Sami Zayn's direction now feels far less clear."
[8.0] "The question was, could Team Cody and Punk coexist? Even before the match started, they began fighting. There were several tense moments, some memorable (Cody dragging Punk back into the ring, Punk wanting to tag in but Cody wasn't there). We even had a ref bump (not surprising given the referee) and an intervention from Nick Aldis. So, for SummerSlam, we'll have Aldis/Gunther and Punk/Cody, but what about Zayn? What's next for him?"
"Cody and Punk's match was solid enough--no real complaints there--but the way they booked Gunther's match was terrible. Aldis hitting him with the belt might technically explain away the clean pinfall, but it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth"
[8.0] "All star tag team nonsense, in a good way. A good main event for a B level show like these SNMEs. They hit all the expected dissension-teasing spots between Punk and Cody, Nick Aldis screwed Gunther, and we got a number of finishers. This isn't rewriting anything or going to blow anyone away, but it was a fun watch."
[7.0] "That was very good! Super fun tag match to watch between four incredible wrestlers, and for me what stands out here is the fact they didn't wrestle a traditional tag style, which was the expected at least for me, but instead went for a very dynamic match, with not a lot of respect for the tag team formula, but several high spots and sequences, which was different and cool. We had hot tags but they weren't the focus, and everything clicked well here, we had thrilling and anarchic moments, which was the intended. The ending was super hot, but at the same time made the match a little bit lame, if you know what I mean, with Nick Aldis appearing and screwing Gunther... I've liked the angle and it was a fun payoff, but at the same time you have this pure wrestling match ruined by a GM angle, which made things kinda divisive here - {***1/2}"
[7.0] "CM Punk and Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther and Sami Zayn was a strong, fast-paced main event that successfully made the SummerSlam stipulation feel important. The match benefited from having four wrestlers with clearly defined roles. Gunther provided physical dominance, Sami brought urgency and underdog energy, Cody delivered the explosive comeback sequences, and Punk helped control the match through experience and submission work. The frequent tags and constant movement prevented the fourteen-minute runtime from feeling wasted. The closing stretch was especially entertaining. Sami's Helluva Kick, Cody's Cross Rhodes, Gunther's lariat and Punk's GTS created a convincing sequence in which every wrestler had an opportunity to influence the result. The crowd's strong reaction also helped the match feel larger than a normal television tag team contest. However, the finish was heavily overbooked. Gunther using the WWE Championship against Cody already introduced one controversial element, but Nick Aldis pulling out the replacement referee and striking Gunther with the title made the outcome depend almost entirely on outside interference. It protected Gunther and preserved Punk vs. Cody as a singles match at SummerSlam, but it also prevented the winners from earning a decisive victory. Sami Zayn was also treated as the least important member of the match during the final moments. The storyline focused much more heavily on Gunther, Aldis, Punk and Cody, leaving Sami without a meaningful role in the actual conclusion. Overall, this was an energetic and well-worked main event with strong star power, good chemistry and important stakes. The wrestling delivered, but the excessively complicated finish stopped it from becoming a truly excellent match. Rating: 7.5/10"
[8.0] "Great main event, where I like how teams worked together, because everyone have a good motivation. Both teams tried to win in a different ways and at the final few minutes everything became a little bit chaotic. Nick Aldis costed GUNTHER and we already know about two 1 on 1 matches."
[9.0] "A brilliant, fast paced, high stakes tag team matchup. This felt like a Will Ospreay match in all of the right ways, quick moving action, a bunch of finishers, dramatic kickouts and moments and of course the Nick Aldis interference setting up a SummerSlam affair i am hyped for. 9"
[8.0] "Unsurprisingly this match was pretty damn good. Not hard when you have 3 all timers in the ring and i guess Cody was there as well. It was fast paced with lots of great action and little bits of nuance and some high stakes which added too it. I also liked how the interference in it does lead to what should be a good match although i still think it was unnecessary. The two teams both had great chemistry with each other and had some great sequences throughout the match. I thought the double submission and how Gunther and Sami got out of them were very clever and i liked that. The finishers for the double down is very over done but i will never not love it in a tag match where the teams are individual wrestlers put together. The finish was solid enough a bit over dramatized and done to set up another match for Gunther but that was always going to happen like that as "It's what we do". But yeah this was a pretty great match. (****)"
[8.0] "This was a great smart tag match. Especially for it not being with either team being a legit team I think the flow of the match was great. Also loved the added stipulation to the match for the first time since Saturday night main event came back they added some importance to one of the matches instead of then all just feeling like obvious outcomes. Very excited for the Gunther and Aldis Summerslam match and I hope that this is a full time switch into a wrestler for aldis as he should have been three years ago. (****)"
[8.0] "Very solid tag match that got the job done in what it needed but I wish the heel team won because to me Punk & Cody deserve a longer build for Summerslam. I do enjoy Punk & Sami being stiff with each other it adds to the intensity of their mini rivalry which I hope they further expand on"
[8.0] "This was excellent. Gunther is a terrific heel and you felt like he was going to win this at any given moment, but Nick Aldis get involved and says, "Not on my watch". Wild tag team match that was the clear match of the night for me."
[9.0] "I dug it! I see a lot of people saying that they predicted Aldis' interference and Cody and Punk's victory, but I didn't see either coming, although I stay away from podcasts and news. Great wrestling and a great set up for Cody and Punk and now Aldis and Gunther."
[7.0] "Solid match with a predictable ending. Everyone worked hard and got their spots in. It's crazy what happens when you allow guys to do more then punch, kick, and clothesline each other for 10 minutes. Punk has definitely worked hard to look the part of a champion and his in ring performance has benefited from it. I think people are definitely getting a little Cody fatigue... so I expect Punk to retain. Aldis vs Gunther will at least be interesting as it's not the same old things again from WWE."
[8.0] "What happens when you put 4 of the best wrestlers in a tag match? You get a really entertaining and fast pacing match. I thought this match was bad on paper cause it made no sense for Gunther and Sami to team up, and Thought it was weird for Punk and Rhodes to team up as well, but both sides worked well together. The wrestling was really good as expected from these four. I did like the moment of Nick costing Gunther the match. I still think this tag match doesn't need to exist, but it was a pleasant surprise of a match."

[9.0] "Really good tag match that felt like a classic PWG/ROH style tag match. The classic all hit finishers and all are laying on the floor spot made that clear. I thought this was an excellent use of in-ring spots and storytelling for SummerSlam build. This worked excellently to produce a great build for both matches going into the big show next couple weeks. I gotta applaud the production of the match that knew the best way to build, yet work the stories and wrestlers together."
[10.0] "Like wow, this worked so damn well and it was so damn enjoyable from start to finish man, unreal performance I'd say, the bumps, spots, back and forth and the drama and everything with the fans and all watching at home being stressed or raging on how the match is going on, thus was a amazing tag team match with four of the top of the top in the WWE, I am so extremely happy to see the, get match of the night and have the opportunity to have the best performance overall on this Saturdays night main event, incredible man, wow."

[7.0] "***1/2. Good main event, felt like a big fight feel of the Saturday nights main events of old. Something was on the line and it felt like everyone had stakes in it and the performers acted accordingly. Weave Aldis into the story and we got a great match and moment."

It's a real shame to have missed the opportunity with Aldis, since the referee positioned himself unnaturally on the opposite side and the camera angle showed Aldis well before his intervention. In-ring quality: 2.75/5. Stakes: 1.5/2. Justification: 1/1. Card placement: 1/1. Suspense: 0.5/1. Bonus/penalty: none. Total: 6.75/10. Match watched the WWE YouTube channel."
[8.0] "A proper main event with four of the top wrestlers in the company going out there and having a good wrestling match. What a novel concept. Had Gunther and Sami won, they would be added to the WWE title match along with Cody and Punk at SummerSlam. Everybody involved had motivation to win and conveyed that story effectively. This moved along at a brisk pace with everyone working well together. I enjoyed the amount of teamwork here from what was two thrown together teams, but again they had every reason to cooperate with each other. One of my favorite moments was during a double submission spot where Gunther helped Sami get out of his so Sami could in return help Gunther. The ref bumps were annoying and there could have been a better way to set up the finish. Nick Aldis costing Gunther made sense with everything Gunther has done to him, which now all but guarantees they'll face each other at SummerSlam. Cody and Punk win to preserve their singles match. 8/10"
[6.0] "Well, now we have the event, but with a completely blown finish and a stupid intervention. The referee standing on the side where Nick Aldis is about to come out from under the ring makes me think WWE takes me for an idiot. Or a child. Your choice."
[8.0] "In addition to delivering compelling action--with solid impacts and fluid sequences--the match truly handles another task by the book. The main goal here is to build suspense while still authentically laying the groundwork for the planned matchups at Summerslam. This is achieved perfectly with a plausible dose of overbooking centered around Nick Aldis and four main eventers in good spirits. You don't want to blow all your powder just yet, but this is still worthy and entertaining in a way that I'm happy to round up to eight points."
[5.0] "There were some fantastic moments in this one, but considering the star power and level of guys in this I thought it really underdelivered. The dual submission spots with Gunther freeing Sami were very good, and the big rotation of finishers was nicely done. There were some great executions in this one too - Gunthers powerbomb looked nuts. Unfortunatley it didn't get anywhere close to enough time to really let this evolve into the actual interesting story here as which tag team would implode, and instead entered with Nick Aldis screwing Gunther and Sami - the heels - out of their opportunity to earn a title shot. I've no idea how Gunther goes from retiring 3 huge names and beating Rollins at Wrestlemania to... seemingly fighting Aldis at Summerslam? It's just something I've no interest in seeing. Also a very weird choice to have the heels get screwed unfairly, although the dynamics in this one were off from the start, as the 4 way at summerslam that would have been granted by Gunther and Sami winning was something I was actively hoping for, so I found myself routing for the heels here anyway. Also this is really nitpicky, but do this at the other side of the ring? The ref running all the way past the pinfall to count it on the side next to the ropes where Aldis was looked ridiculous. A well executed match that loses a lot for me because of a really deflating finish."
[9.0] "This is everything it needed to be, and it's a blast! From that pre-match interview backstage between Punk and Cody, the one-upmanship between them and the overall dynamic between all four participants. The stipulation adds so much more interest and drama, and they went all out on this one. They brawl it out before the bell even rings and from there, they never looked back. I love the intensity, Sami being a man possessed, busting Punk's nose, Gunther kicking ass as usual. Of course you get some of those accidental bumps into one another between Punk and Cody, which is fine, and although predictable, Nick Aldis costing Gunther (and Sami) the match, is great! ****1/4"
[10.0] "This was as perfect of a match i have seen this year. I don't know how to describe this other than the atmosphere for this match was INFECTIOUS. Made me want to be there live for this. Cody was fucking fantastic in this match. His hot tag was insane. Probably the best he has looked all year and i think he needed this. Punk & Sami exchanges were full of hate and spite. Felt so real. I guess, Gunther is the only guy in this match i'd say didn't look best, not in terms of in ring but his overall presentation. He just bumped and sold for the babyfaces most of the match. Almost comical how much he was getting his ass kicked. I personally love the genre of good guy kicking bad guys ass but considering how dominant Gunther was, felt bad for him. Overall, easily MOTN and probably going to end up being one of my favorite matches of the year. Kick ass all star tag with electric atmosphere. More of this please!"
[8.0] "I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing of the match was simply excellent. There wasn't a single dull moment, and they delivered the kind of quality wrestling that is often missing from WWE shows. After the match, Punk deliberately grazed Cody's eye with the title belt, rattling him in the process. It will be interesting to see where this leads. It looks like a heel turn for one of the wrestlers is closer than ever."
[7.0] "At this point, I've accepted the shenanigans. The match is ridiculous, but it was pretty fun. The sequences were decent, there was a lot of chaos, and it was all executed better than previous moments in this weird overarching feud. Gunther hitting a Rainmaker got a pop out of me."
[8.0] "Solid matchup with a predictable nonsense finish. Hot right from the start and then all four showed why they are all former world champions in WWE. Luckily not a ton of can they co-exist spots in the matchup. Of course, they did the ref bump to set up Aldis getting involve costing Gunther the shot at Summerslam."
[9.0] "All-Star Tag Team Match that delivered big-time. What an awesome, fast-paced, hard-hitting, and red-hot match we got as the main event. The match started with fists flying everywhere. I loved the Tag Team of CM Punk and Cody Rhodes; they even matched with New York Knicks Colors. Gunther and Sami Zayn don't like each other, but man, they were working well together in this match. There were many good moments, but when Nick Aldis was the General Manager of SmackDown came out underneath the ring to cost Gunther the chance of winning by pulling out the referee, and hitting Gunther with the Undisputed WWE Championship as Cody Rhodes and CM Punk came away with the win, but man this was great a MSG Level Main Event that delivered and goes to show All-Star Tag Team Matches are a hit bring them back Triple H you use to use them all the time from 2022-2024."
[9.0] "This match was a ton of fun and should have been the main event in my opinion. It's rare to see succh a fast-paced match in WWE but it really worked here because of the relationships between these four were made clear because of it. I'm also perfectly fine with the screwy finish because I really want to see Aldis vs Gunther"
[7.0] "7/10 but I don't like the treatment of myself, here they could have played it out with a 3-man match, it's great that Nick Aldis showed up, very good, but if it's okay, CM Punk vs Cody and Gunther vs Nick, I'm begging CM Punk, save us from another Cody reign and start a program with Orton"
[8.0] "4/5. Great main event here. I felt like everyone in this match did great, and I loved Cody throwing Punk back into the ring so Gunther and Zayn couldn't win via count-out. I would've liked to have seen Zayn and Gunther win here, but Punk vs. Cody seems like the more important match (and Gunther has to fight a General Manager after retiring 3 legends within the past year! ) so I'm not surprised by this result. I was not a big fan of the finish though, as Nick Aldis shouldn't have interfered at all here."
[8.0] "The main event was excellent. Blimey, what a pace. All four were at the top of their game. It was almost a tornado match. Cody bringing Punk back into the ring was brilliant. The Punk/Zayn exchanges were brilliant; at times you really get the impression that Zayn genuinely hates Punk. Another cool moment was when Gunther reversed the four-way hold and poked Punk in the eye to save Zayn. The finish makes sense, with Aldis preventing Gunther from being in the Cody/Punk match at SummerSlam. What'll be interesting is when Sami finds out that he and Gunther have lost their chance to be in the Cody/Punk match because of Aldis."
"Kinda tired of how often WWE ends matches with interference after interference. It feels like not even at WrestleMania they can let someone lose clean. It's absurd because a wrestler can grow from a loss and doesn't have to look weak just because they weren't a superhero for once. That said, the match was awesome and way better than what we've been getting recently."
[7.0] "This was a very good match with a finish that was somewhat predictable and yet I still found it so typical WWE. This was by far the match where the crowd was most invested in and I thought they helped what seemingly was a house show match get into a different gear."
[10.0] "What an absolutely fantastic tag team match. Everything about it was firing on all cylinders. The reversal battle between all four participants had me on the edge of my seat. Considering their recent history, it looked absolutely wild and spectacular. The Cody and Sami sequence leading into the Blue Thunder Bomb especially stuck with me. Gunther saving Sami while he was trapped in Punk's Anaconda Vice, only for Sami to then help Gunther escape Cody's Figure Four Leglock, was a genuinely brilliant piece of wrestling, and it wasn't even Gunther's last great idea in the match. Take the moment where he survived while outnumbered and came incredibly close to winning the match even without Zayn's help. Then came another completely logical turn of events that I absolutely loved. The only thing I didn't particularly like was how easily Cody and Punk were able to hit their finishers at various points, but that's a minor complaint. A truly classic, old-school tag team match within an old-school event. The perfect way to close the show (****3/4)."
