428.02.2025igskillfart9.0(4.5*) i love me some stiff wrestling, this is ROH's stiffest wrestling match (Low Ki vs KENTA is close second), honestly this didn't even feel like a wrestling match, this really felt like a fight, that backdrop suplex Joe took I thought he died right in the ring, a match that didn't really have a story to it really told one in the ring!

929.01.2025uselessdollthing6.0Samoa Joe is dropped into ROH and decides to drop a stiff nuke of a match with Low Ki. Not perfect, but most debut matches aren't this good especially for someone as Joe who was super early in his career like this. I think Low Ki was a good pairing for him. The stipulation kinda does nothing but this is more because Joe is hired by a faction that wants to 'destroy the code of honor' so I suppose it was put in place because of that.

1605.12.2024screwokada8.0Brutal debut for Joe, who immediately feels like a huge deal going toe to toe with Low Ki, despite these guys going all out it still felt like these two left a lot on the table for future re-matches. 4.25 stars

2430.08.2024Sottle7.0Very odd watching Joe emerge for a match without his accompanying Joe Aura that has followed him everywhere for nearly 20 years now. None the less this match delivers what I'm sure most people came to see, brutal strike exchanges, tight grappling. Just two tough bastards having a dick measuring contest. However, the layout of the match bothers me. With Joe coming in as a hired gun and with Low-Ki at a low after losing the title, vulnerability accentuated by a couple of kayfabe injuries, I'd like to see a plucky underdog performance from Ki here. The alpha killer of the first year of ROH having to figure out what to do when he's not the bully anymore. The finish is the greatest pain point for this. After 15 minutes of Joe looking dominant and Ki looking out of answers, surviving on spirit alone, the still pretty great finish of Ki throwing endless strikes at Joe until he literally collapses for the pin, would have been absolutely electric. As it is, after the entirely 50/50 exchange that we get, it's just pretty good.

2610.08.2024Philnox9.0Great match. The first time Samoa Joe fought in RoH, and it was a banger. The crowd was very excited for it as well, my only complaint would be that sometimes the commentary was a bit cringe.

3511.04.2024ZooWee8.0Match of the night by a pretty huge margin. It's Joe's first match in ROH, being brought in by the Prophecy as a hired gun to essentially just fuck up Low Ki, and it's also the first Fight Without Honor in ROH history. While subsequently Fight's Without Honor would typically just be hardcore weapons based matches, this one is different. This is just two pissed off guys beating each other up, because they ARE weapons. Low Ki is extra pissed here after losing the ROH title on the previous show, and he does not pull any punches with Joe here, nailing him with some of his signature stiff kicks, chops and forearms. Joe hits back equally as hard though, with some nasty elbows, kicks and lariats of his own. The finish here is the most fucking badass shit too. After about 14 minutes of beating the absolute tar out of eachother, both guys just start no selling the other's kicks, which leads to them taking off their wrist tape and knee pads so they can beat the shit out of eachother more effectively. They go back and forth for a bit longer, before Ki nails Joe with some of the nastiest Kawada kicks I've ever seen, and then just straight clubbing the back of his head with forearms until he just collapses, which allows Ki to pin him for the win. A really great, stupidly hard hitting and violent match, and a great way to start the legendary ROH career of Samoa Joe. ****1/4

3802.03.2024Rjepic18.0A great and hard hitting match here. This was my favourite match of the night. While I find it wild that Joe didn't win in his ROH debut, I will say Low-Ki made his win believable. We find out in a segment near the end of the show that Joe isn't a full blown member of the Prophecy; he was only hired to take on Low-Ki.

4502.12.2023KingsCrossing9.0This match is absolutely badass. It's such a terrific blend of different styles. It clearly draws heavy inspiration from shoot style wrestling, and feels like a more fully realised version of 'strong style' than the soulless, rote, cheap imitation version of that style which is commonplace today. It makes for a compelling, physical contest that feels like a real war of wills. This is an example of how you do a strike exchange that feels natural. The finish is awesome and would be unique even today, as Low Ki pummels Joe with strikes until he collapses and Ki is able to cover him for for the victory. Creative, intense, and hard hitting - this is an excellent match.

4803.11.2023FilipsWrestlingWorld9.0Holy shit this match fucks so hard one of the most hard hitting MMA like matches in wrestling this match is just these two beating the piss out of each other for 16 minutes and its great the whole way thru a really great finish and probably one of the most underrated ROH matches of all time ****3/4 for me

5302.08.2023BlackVikingGZ9.0This was just amazing. It wasn't a wrestling match, it was a wild fight that seemed real. Really good stuff and a great debut for Samoa Joe, who is the first wrestler than is treated as a powerful menace similar as Low Ki. Joe was without a doubt the star of the night. Incredible stiff strikes and kicks, painfull submissions such as thar amazing single leg boston crab, and great powermoves and inversion, for example the Island Driver or the death valley driver countering a Dragon Clutch from Low Ki. Also his selling is really really good, looking stuned and having to stop to catch air. On the other hand, Low Ki is really good, intense offense as always, but his selling was much worse than Joe's one. They beat the hell out of each other, for me Samoa Joe, as a bigger and lethal wrestler, should have got the upperhand, but it wasn't like that. I understand the finish, where Low Ki strikes Joe in all ways he can until his rivals is knocked out, but I think it could have been done better. Anyway, is a great match, another classic from the early ROH.
5421.07.2023Shadow Explosion9.0Joe here was a hired gun by Christopher Daniels to take out Low Ki, which is why this is a fight without Honor. This is a stiff as hell match as expected, throwing chops, kicks, slaps, headbutts, Joe throws some gross mounted elbows. Low Ki does some crazy octopus stretch armbar. Joe and Ki throw some loud slaps. Low Ki does a nasty backdrop driver to Joe. Joe does one of the most creative submission escapes and hits a Death Valley Driver, Joe then hits the Island Driver. These guys beat the the hell out of each other, and it's wonderful, but the only reason I can't give this a 10 is because the finish was kinda lame. I get what they were trying to do with the sorta Hokuto/Kandori finish but I don't think they pulled it off well. Still an awesome match and still cements Low Ki as the ROH MVP of 2002.

5727.05.2023CoolKyle8.0These guys just beat the shit out of each other and kept up the pace and the struggle until it culminated in a stiff and logical finish. This is the kind of war of attrition that a lot of US indy matches wish they could be. The match lacked in transitions, but the sheer assbeating will keep you watching till the end. When is the last time there was no highspot to win, you just clubbed youre way to victory.

6012.05.2023Cigarette Salesman8.0There are not many people you can watch go toe to toe with Samoa Joe in a striking battle and not look foolish, and yet Low Ki struck so true it works. The one-count kick outs, the mean-looking submissions topped by the single-leg crab with Joe's knee on Low Ki's head. This is beautiful stiff bad-tempered goodness perfectly suited to the larger story going on that led to it. When they start taking the tape off their hands and pulling their kneepads down... This deserved a bigger crowd. One of the more successful attempts by a pure wrestling match to look like a fight.

7707.09.2021TSwifty9.0A very AJPW/Japanese style match with stiff strikes, power moves and submissions until one man just couldn't stand up anymore. Another user perfectly summed up my thoughts below me. The 50/50 striking was never boring or felt meaningless. It furthered the intensity of the match. This was a starmaking performance from Joe as well. A fantastic bout from two of the best around this time. ****1/2

7927.04.2021NotATroll9.0Stupidly hard hitting match that actually uses 50/50 strike exchanges to further the match in and of themselves rather than using them to transition between segments.

8703.10.2020CallsRevenge9.0Aside from the striking war that has been mentioned previously, it was just a really well paced match with a little bit of everything that a Japanese style match would display. A little grappling in the beginning, stiff strikes, Joe being presented as the first guy who could stand toe-to-toe with Low Ki in the brutality department. Also a very cool way to end the match back in 2002 which was essentially via stoppage (despite the pin) before wins via stoppage became way too overutilized in the Indies in the following few years.

9202.05.2020NastyYaffa8.0It's Samoa Joe's ROH debut, and he sure came to the company with a BANG. This is a complete strikefest with them beating the absolute shit out of one another right from the get go, with an occasional power move or submission, and it's the good stuff. I've never really been on the "it's a classic" boat for it, but it's definitely one helluva match.
