Adrian Adonis, King Harley Race & Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat, Roddy Piper & The Junkyard Dog

[4.0] "So much of this match seems far more theatrical and silly than other matches I can recall from this time period. Steamboat, while full of energy, doesn't have much behind his strikes. Junkyard and Adonis get eliminated fairly early on and Race is just difficult to take seriously. His bumping and mannerisms are ridiculous, and going by his WWF run only you'd be convinced he's just not very good.Savages performance is fine, but Piper is the only reason to watch this."

[8.0] "Good stuff as you can expect from these great wrestlers , just truly an enjoyable one and its genius in it's own way and I loved it for that, brilliant ending. ***3/4+"

[9.0] "Unbelievably fun match, this is awesome in terms of thrill, crowd involvement, psychology, making the viewer connected... it's a very complete match, an awesome experience, billed as Piper's farewell from Madison Square Garden, and a 3v3 elimination match. The dynamic between the babyfaces and the heels are extremely established, and if you're into the WWF rivalries that were going on at that point, it's clear that Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage are the main focus of this match, when it comes to storytelling and creating tension, because they're the long term rivals, who are building a WrestleMania match, and the dynamic between them is awesome here. The bout started frenetic, and then things escalated into a crazy brawl on the outside, that lead to Adonis and JYD being counted out, as they were the legal men, they were punished for that anarchic moment of the match, and it was a very creative way of taking them out. Steamboat and Savage were going at each other during the entire match, with Steamboat always getting the advantage and momentum, but just like he always does, Savage managed to outsmart him, and reversed the roll-up that Ricky was doing on Harley Race, eliminating the Dragon from the match, another example of Steamboat doing everything right and being screwed by that lucky bastard! It's now Piper against both Harley and Randy, and it's a blast, the crowd was behind him, and the selling is incredible... Piper is able to pin Harley, after he got out of the way and Savage hit his own teammate, and in the end, he outsmarted Savage, played dead and tricked him into a diving elbow, which he dodged, and it's amazing that the camera got that since the beginning, it's honestly one of the most creative solutions I've ever saw, really good stuff, amazing match, one of the most fun of the 80s - {****1/4}"

[7.0] "One of the best examples of the WWF's success in the 80's here. Not an all-timer but so much star power in the ring combined with great psychology and a well booked progression gets the crowd behind everything. Essentially a series of Wrestlemania angles in one match with surprises thrown in to keep it fresh. Still though, watching it now, it wasn't as engrossing as I feel it would've been if I watched it live and certainly not as much as it would be if I were there live."

[9.0] "A fantastic, fun, chaotic, stereo-typical 80s rock-n-wrassling match! no flips, no dives, no 450 tope suicida off a balcony through 45 tables and 75 fluorescent light tubes. The crowd is on their feet because they are invested in the characters, not the ridiculous, blatantly obvious gymnastic routines that pollute the wrestling industry today."

[6.0] "So apparently, what is so special about this match is that it was supposed to be Roddy Piper's farewell from Madison Square Garden, and he was going out as a babyface there. I can understand the importance of that at the time, but considering Roddy Piper would be a WWE Champion again 2 decades later, the significance of this farewell is obviously lessened. Now, it was cool to see Piper getting some serious height on his running bulldog, and nailing a sunset flip, but the overall match from start to finish is not that good, in my opinion. The crowd is great, and you can tell they are deeply invested in these characters, but the action is pretty slow and at times pretty sloppy."

[7.0] "Probably the second best tag team match from the 80s. The crowd were excited, the announcers were hilarious, and though the wrestling was not too technical, it was still substantial during this era of the WWF. The concept of face and heel was definitely executed perfectly as the crowd cheered for all the face wrestlers and booed all the heels. Though the match did start out slow at first, it became more interesting later on and built the suspense that this would be Piper's last match (even though that was not the case). Also important to note that it is obvious that Savage along with Steamboat are clearly levels over the other wrestlers in this match regarding in ring talent."

[8.0] "An illustration of the Rock N' Wrestling era. The guys didn't do much, but it's terribly effective. This was supposed to be Piper's last dance at MSG and the bastard was electric for it. Pretty rare to see Piper going all out like this. The lad embodied the fight. Race selling like crazy, Adonis and J.D making a mess while Steamboat and Savage took pleasure to beat the living shit of each other... It was just that COOL to watch."

[10.0] "Basically a proto-Survivor Series, this was an entertaining match with some amazing in-ring work from Randy Savage and Roddy Piper."

[9.0] "Piper's last supposed match in Madison Square Garden, but we know now that isn't true. I'm not sure if the WWF was testing for the Survivor Series, but there were a lot of elimination matches on the house show circuit during this time. Still, this was a great match with the crowd going nuts for everything. Fantastic."

[6.0] "A pretty chaotic and disorganized match. Fun to see Harley bumping around all over the place! Very awkward moment when Savage stares at Piper pinning Harley for a while before finally trying to break it up only to be too late to stop the 3-count. Finish felt anticlimactic to me."

[9.0] "This is a very fun match fitting for pipers last hoorah in MSG. Steamboat and race both played solid minor face and heel foils respectively, but this match was about macho man and piper. Piper alone put in a pretty solid performance, which is very good coming from someone who isn? t really that great of a worker, and of course randy savage is always a phenomenal performer. Moments with JYD kinda sink the match a bit, he? s just too old to be put in this type of position, but the addition of slick on commentary makes up for it. Overall, this is an amazing match that one must watch to truly understand the rock n wrestling era. ****1/2"

[7.0] "This is a nice little build into Wrestlemania III while also serving as a farewell to MSG for Roddy Piper. It plays out well with Piper having to overcome a 2-to-1 disadvantage in order to win it. The action itself wasn't all that great with some sloppiness, but the match does its job. ***1/2"

[9.0] "A great elimination style match that is the ground format for the Survivor Series concept for years to come. The elimination placement was smart here, I gotta admit. Overall, a fun little preview to the WrestleMania matches as they pit all the opponents against each other. The crowd also love it too which is a positive. [****1/4]"

[8.0] "Great match here, this helped build for Wrestlemania perfectly by showcasing three of the pairings from the show, whilst not giving too much away. The wrestling here was very solid and the crowd were red hot for this, making for what was a pretty special little match."

[4.0] "Definitely a crown pleaser, but not much more than that and doesn't really hold up in 2020. The striking is pretty bad, the mannerisms are very over-the-top and corny, and for the most part it flows pretty poorly. It had it moments, and it wasn't outright bad, but definitely could've done without seeing this and all six men have had better matches. **-"

[9.0] "This is an absolutely great six man tag and I love seeing it highlighted here. Everyone in the match plays their part well, but I especially loved Adrian Adonis here."

[8.0] "Fantastic six man tag match. Piper in particular was awesome here as Race and Savage also had on their working boots. The Junkyard Dog was not good in this match but they were smart enough to get him out early. Tremendous fun as these elimination matches would main event house shows for the next few weeks. Also, I must say that Slick and Gorilla on commentary was entertaining. They should have let Slick done more on commentary. Great stuff ****."
