Andre The Giant vs. Hulk Hogan

[5.0] "Not a great match, but gave the crowd the spectacle many attended for. I was pleased to see both guys out of the tournament as a result. Wouldn't says it's much worse than WrestleMania 3 but it's certainly not any better"

[0.0] "This was an awful match anyway, but that finish... that finish may be one of the worst finishes in any match that I've ever seen. It made no sense. It was a shameless attempt to make Hogan and Andre look 'strong' and it made Hogan look like a heel. It didn't even look good and made zero sense. For the life of me I can't understand why people wax lyrical about Hogan and Andre. They are both AWFUL."

[2.0] "Hogan vs Andre just isn't the same without the spectacle as this was by a mile the weakest match of the series! This was basically just killing time building to a lame DQ finish with Jesse Ventura hilariously mocking Hogan for the big celebration and posing he does afterwards."

[2.0] "Vince McMahon is truly one of the worst bookers and promoters in history. A finish so braindead and moronic you got your commentators confused and exclaiming how dumb it all is. God bless you Jesse Ventura. Rot in hell Hulk Hogan. *1/4"

[1.0] "What a disaster. It's also not even really a double a dq but none of it matters. It's a shell of the match they had a year earlier as Andre declined rapidly. It's such a trainwreck that Hogan's music starts mid verse. Truly awful stuff here."

"The immediate attack completely killed the epic feel this match should have had. Hogan's overselling made the whole thing come off as almost ridiculous."

[1.0] "Horrible, 1 quarter of a star. For half a second I thought it was only Andre was gonna get DQd lmao. Hogan's music plays after he slams andre yet again, no spectacle this year, and an awful five minutes slog, who cares- then Hogan parades around for five minutes like he won the main event? Ok..."

[4.0] "The central match of this early tournament proved to be a disaster in the ring, between the overall poor performance and that ridiculous double disqualification to protect that loser, Hogan. In-ring quality: 0/4. Stakes: 1/2. Justification: 1/1. Placement on the card: 1/1. Suspense: 1/1. Bonus/penalty: -0.75 for the absurd final decision. Total: 4.25/10. Match watched on Netflix (FR)."

[3.0] "Andre and Hogan were among the biggest rivalries during the 80s. For all that, I have to say I've never really enjoyed watching any of their matches together. Hogan had a very limited moveset, and Andre at this stage of his career was incredibly limited at what he could do in the ring. At least, as previously mentioned, if you're struggling to decide who wins and you decide a draw makes most sense, you may as well do a double DQ or double count-out. It's not my favourite finish for a match, but sometimes it serves a purpose to protect both individuals, and managed to achieve the same result with 10 mins less time needed than the Rick/Jake match earlier in the night. I will say technically Andre should've won this one via DQ, as there's a fair amount of time before Andre even grabs the chair from the ref, but there you go. I gave their match at the previous year's Mania a 4/10, and this one falls only slightly short of the same quality. So the rating should reflect that."

[0.0] "If I gave 5/10 to their match in WrestleMania 3, it's because of it's importance and how iconic it is for WrestleMania's and WWE's history, but this makes their match at WrestleMania 3 looks like a Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega, this was slow, botches, and in this one, I can't give it a high rating, because this wasn't iconic like the WM3 match, and finished in a double DQ and a Body slam that doesn't cause a reaction like the iconic one on WrestleMania 3, 0/10 [DUD]"

[2.0] "For how iconic this pairing is, they really don't have much chemistry at all. The build to Hogan knocking Andre down was poorly done and looked bad when it happened. Worse than their match the year prior, and that was also pretty bad. Horrible finish too"

[4.0] "I would say the match was alright. It was obviously not the same as their clash a year ago and the finish was not very satisfying but I expected much worse than that. At least the match was not stretched to a time limit draw like the Roberts vs Rude match. This way, it was a quick and easy affair."

[3.0] "A worse rerun of their Wrestlemania 3 match. The same thing but slower, less interesting, and without the legendary moment of the slam. 3/10."

[4.0] "Interesting way to disqualify both men from the tournament, without someone getting pinned, even though if the rules were followed strictly, Hogan should've been the one disqualified, because he hit Andre with the chair first, and then Andre picked up the chair and hit his head with it, but with all the confusion, the referee called a double DQ. The match was very short, but the crowd was on fire like always, and they've repeated the same formula of the previous matches, a lot of charismatic taunts, after Hogan trapped Andre into the ropes the crowd erupted, and the hulking up afterwards was great. The messed up ending unfortunately makes this nowhere near the level of their previous matches, in terms of quality and significance, but this is a good one, after the match Hogan gave him the bodyslam, and his music played for a long time, probably longer than the match lmao, this was the way of making Hogan look good at Mania, it was his WrestleMania IV moment and the fans wanted exactly that - {**}"

[2.0] "Their match in the main event of Wrestlemania 3 was a slowly worked but special, memorable contest carried by the crowd and finish. This match is half the runtime, yet the same level of bad in-ring quality, heavily damaged with a cheap DQ finish, dragging the rating down all the way to 2/10. A waste of time, and nothing you need to watch."

[0.0] "Calling this a match is truly generous. The plan was to get the belt onto Savage all along, which meant that there were two possibilities for Hogan. Either he beats Andre again, beats DiBiase, and goes on to lose to Savage, or Andre beats Hogan and goes on to lose to Savage. We can't have Hogan getting beaten clean by Savage, and we certainly can't have Savage beating Andre and stealing Hogan's thunder. This match reeks of "That's not gonna work for me, brother.""

[2.0] "Thank God this wasn't the main event because this match was once again absolutely terrible and just wasn't entertaining in the slightest. There original match together was at least important but the finish absolutely sucked, Hogan hits Andre with a chair, doesn't get a DQ, Andre does the exact same thing, and then the ref calls for a double DQ, it makes no sense at all."

[2.0] "For a long while, this was pencilled in as the main event until they found out Hogan wouldn't be around, so we can thank our lucky stars we didn't end up with that. Hogan needs to go away until Summerslam so he can't progress here and there's no way Andre is doing two matches in a night, so the schmozz was a means to an end, even though it should have been a Hogan DQ because they didn't think things through very well."

[7.0] "They didnt waste any time, as Andre jumped Hogan as he came into the ring. These two went after it, with the crowd red hot behind them. Hogan dropped Andre with punches, but Andre caught Hogan on an elbow drop and transitioned from a choke to a rear-naked choke, working on the mat like hes Kyle OReilly. We got a long choke spot off of a headbutt, playing off of Andres attack on Hogan on Saturday Nights Main Event, but Hogan fought his way free. The crowd was rabid for all of this. Hogan sent Andre into the corner with an Axe Bomber, but as Virgil distracted the ref, DiBiase hit Hogan with a chair. Hogan no-sold and took the chair before both men drilled each other with the chair. Hogan hit Andre first, but Andres shot made a real nasty pinball sound when it hit Hogans head. Hogan dropped Andre with the chair and chased DiBiase and Virgil up the ramp. DiBiase threw Virgil to Hogan to get away, allowing Hogan to hit a suplex on the walkway without taking the bump too. Hogan slammed Andre as the announcers noted that the match was ruled a double disqualification. Hogan did his routine as they never announced the result to the house. This match fucking ruled! There wasnt any sitting around, Andre looked so much better than he did last year, and this crowd was as hot as theyd been all night. I swear if this had a real finish, Id go notebook on it. I had a giant smile on my face watching this one. ***3/4"

[1.0] "Pretty much a waste of time on every level beyond advancing the main storyline. These two aren't even interested in trying to deliver an average-to-mediocre match at all, as they did at WM3. On top of that, a double DQ is always one of the absolute worst results that a wrestling match can have. If this was the extent of Hulk and Andre just going out and putting on a spectacle to appease the fans, I'd consider giving them an extra point or two, but they came back and did it again during their interference in the main event, for an actual reason. This one was just a means to an end, and it's simply not a fun diversion on an overlong show."

[5.0] "The big rematch after Andre "beat" Hogan for the World title. This was not good but it is still always nice to watch these two together. Andre couldn't work very well anymore. Of course we had to have a screw finish which sucks:(. But as i said fun to watch these 2 together."

[2.0] "This was a pretty slow and boring match and nowhere near as good as their other matches. They tried to recreate their Wrestlemania 3 match with a dumb result. Why is it a double disqualification when Hogan clearly hit Andre with the chair first?"

[7.0] "I know it's easy to be negative on Hogan and his hokey bullshit. I'm not a particular fan of the guy inside or outside the ring. But, it's impressive to see not only the audience go nuts for the guy, but to see the police having fun and Donald Trump standing at attention when the guy makes his entrance is pretty crazy. As a match, it's nothing. I'm sure this is a bit of storyline progression if anything. But, when considering all the aspects of pro wrestling, I think this is an example of doing a great job based on charisma alone."

[0.0] "No historic moment to save this one but at least it ended in five minutes and in the most dumb way possible. People were paying to see this garbage bro, I wonder how they would react to an Ospreay match, imagining this was the only way to keep me entertained. I am jealous in a way because people were entertained by anything at that time."

[6.0] "I actually quite enjoyed this short little rematch. It eliminated both guys from the tournament, ensuring we would get a new champion. I will say that Hogan made this feud legendary all by himself, because Andre could barely move at this twilight of his career."

[1.0] "Time to put a bow on the Andre the Giant vs Hulk Hogan saga. When I was a young one, I ate this up because I was turning on Hogan and it was satisfying to see Andre overwhelm him so often. I wasn't an Andre fan, I just didn't like Hogan. The Giant pours on the offense early, Hogan makes a comeback but Andre finds himself in control again. Poor Andre looks terrible. Hogan once again comes back and here is DiBiase to introduce the chair that causes the double disqualification. The post match never seems to end and is pretty much NAUSEATING. 0.75"

[1.0] "they were trying to cash in on the rivalry but only preceded to waste peoples time. I remember watching a dvd with all there encounters and while the 1st one was disappointed because of expectations, I can appreciate what it meant. this one is a soulless cash grab and incredibly hard with how boring it is"

[1.0] "Everything the first match was becomes absolutely nothing here, slow and boring, one of the selling points of this show was, this, somehow. It just didn't work."

[2.0] "A slow nothing match that was just wting for the finish, i like the decison to gerentee that a first time champion will be crownd but this match just sucked. Hogan hit andre first with the chair so the finish makese no sense as andre ought to have won but whatevr. Also hogan hotdoging for the leagth of his theam after being elimintidet from the tournemt is a disgrace"

[2.0] "The finish of this match is one of the worst I have ever seen. How is it a double DQ when Hogan hits him first and Andre hits him like a minute later. There is some decent brawling in this slow paced match before this but nothing about this was good and the finish was horrible."

[0.0] "A double Disqualification? One man hits another man with a chair, and you decide to make that a double disqualification? Im not saying their first match was great, because, well it wasnt. But this is just appalling. A nothing match that ends in a no contest that doesnt even make sense. Laughable."

[4.0] "I have to be honest, even if it'll cause people to chase me with pitchforks. This match is better than their Wrestlemania 3 match. I said it. I mean it. At the very least, this match was short, sweet, and to the point. It had a frantic brawling energy that it needed. It really felt like both men were dying to get their hands on each other. And the short length covers for both of their limitations. It's not a great match by any stretch, but it at least knew its limitations, where the Wrestlemania 3 match is just tiring to watch. While the finish obviously isn't ideal, I give it a pass because they needed to do something like this to get Hogan and Andre out of the tournament. You needed Hogan out, but you obviously don't want to flat out beat him. A double countout might have been a bit more appropriate and less silly, but the way it was done kept up with the frantic and aggressive energy the match had too."

[1.0] "An awful match. It's really sad, again, to see Andre in this deteriorated fashion. Hogan doesn't put the effort in here that he did at Main Event. There's a lot less riding on this one. Andre struggles with almost every aspect of the match. You could probably forgive the poor standard if they had a good finish but they don't. Hogan uses the chair, which should be a DQ with Andre advancing. Instead Andre uses the chair in retaliation and it's a double DQ. The rules state the first infringement would be the DQ. Andre's attack would be considered post match and he would be the winner. I'd expect nothing less from Joey Marella."

[4.0] "27/3/88 Wrestlemania IV WWF. A poor match. Andre sold as best as he could but it the match seemed to have no coherency. Hogan was trying to fit too much in, the comeback, the interference, the chase, the rematch, the slam, the DQ. Defo loses and extra point for those awful panto chair shots. A kind 3.5*"

[6.0] "Fun match, despite Andre being extremely limited here. Doesn't hold a candle to the WMIII match - but very little does. I'd subtract a point for a brain dead finish w/a double DQ and no resolution if I hadn't watched the event (it's a tournament). Skip to the Randy Savage vs Dibiase match at the end. Hogan and Andre keep going at it there. So it's not as bad as you think."

[3.0] "Well that wasn't a WrestleMania III match, I can tell you that. I mean the in ring stuff was uncomparable to their Mania match, but the main dish is the finish. Why would you disqualify both the guys if Hulk hit Andre with a chair first? Dumb finish, insulting even."

[2.0] "This STUNK. The finish is lame. This was worse than their rematch from The Main Event #1. What a letdown."

[4.0] "I don't think it's AS bad as it's being made out here, but yeah this is a poor showing from two legends. The double DQ result is bs, and it just feels like an attempt at recapturing what 3 had, unsuccessfully."

[4.0] "Aside from the poor execution on the finish (nice chair shot from Andre though), I really didn't see anything here to warrant such a low rating. I thought it was fun for what it was. It felt cartoonish, but in a way that I found endearing. There was good energy and a strong atmosphere throughout the match, even when things weren't very fast paced. I thought this was enjoyable despite the flawed finish."

[0.0] "I already didn't like their Mania 3 encounter, so of course a rematch wasn't going to be my favorite. Finishing with a double DQ and Hogan celebrating like he just won a Title wasting time on a show crammed with way to many matches takes an already subpar match into the worst match zone for me"

[0.0] "The double DQ was a load of bull. The fact that this tournament is riddled with screwy finishes is bull. And the recreation of the Hulk slam on Andre was just the bull icing on this crap cake."

[1.0] "Less quality than the year before, less emotion than the year before, less crowd reactions than the year before."

[5.0] "A short Hogan match with a very hot crowd is a guilty pleasure and this is the first match on the card I enjoyed despite the fact Andre can barely walk. The finish made no sense at all. Andre was robbed."

[4.0] "This was never going to be on the level of their other highly-acclaimed encounters, but it never tried to be. Andre is getting really immobile at this period, but he has always been a smart worker who can get the best out of his limitations. It wasn't much different here. They kept this short and basic to accommodate him, and the crowd was hot all throughout. I hated the double DQ finish, as Hogan was literally the first one to fire the chair shot, and Andre only did it after. Yet another idiotic ending in a bunch of them tonight. Hogan cleaned house post-match so he could do his obligatory poses to the fans. I've seen worse. [*3/4]"

[2.0] "There was nothing if we wanna see a good wrestling match by workrate. And one shouldn? t expect that from 80's wwf and from this two. I can give a star for entertainment. (*)"

[2.0] "Hogan/Andre matches aren? t technical classics or anything but at least the other ones had the big fight feel about them. This is just the first round of a tournament with a bad finish"

[3.0] "This might have been the worst of the Hogan/Andre matches from this era. Pretty crap double DQ finish to keep both guys out."

[1.0] "Awful match, really fucking terrible. I am a fan of their other matches, particularly WrestleMania III and The Main Event, but not this one. It was a nothing match with a really dumb finish. Why didn't Andre win by DQ when it was Hogan who hit him in the chair to begin with? ! It was also really sad to watch Andre here, who could barely even walk at this point, let alone wrestle. The only reason I give this a point is because of the crowd, because everything else about this has DUD written all over it. [1/4*]"

[4.0] "Andre's even more broken down than he was at Wrestlemania 3, so they keep this short and sweet. The crowd eats up everything theyserves up and even Trump has a smile on his face during this. Dibiase tries to get involved and this is thrown out once both guys are swinging chair shots at each other. The double DQ is mind-boggling as Hulk clearly swung first. Whatever. Hulk takes out Virgil with a suplex onto the concrete and body slams Andre as the Trump Plaza erupts. Not exactly a great match, but a decent angle to further the story of the entire tournament."

[4.0] "The start of this is actually pretty good with Andre going straight for Hogan and some good strike exchanges, but the finish is atrocious and a huge cop out on a show like this."
